Dorothy Stratten was on a fast track to stardom after she had been discovered by Playboy in 1979. Her career quickly transitioned from her being a waitress at a Dairy Queen in Vancouver Canada, to being named the Playboy Playmate for the month of August in 1979, to being named Playmate of the year in 1980. By the end of 1979 and in early 1980, Dorothy begun to experience success as a TV and movie actress. However, on Aug 14, 1980, 20-year-old Dorothy would meet with her soon to be ex-husband, Paul Snider to discuss their divorce settlement. Sadly, this would be the last meeting Dorothy ever had. This is a special crossover episode with the film podcast Linoleum Knife Presents More Linoleum Knife hosting by husbands and film critics Dave White and Alonso Duralde who Dennis has been friends with since the 1990s. They invited Dennis on to talk about one of his favorite movies ever, Xanadu starring Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly and Michael Beck. Dennis shares a slew of memories related to the film, like when he watched it in his hometown of Holbrook, AZ and the power went out during the screening, that time he got to be a paid to dance in front of the screen while the movie was playing and the chilling encounter he once had on stage with an actress from Xanadu: The Musical that haunts him to this day. Other topics include: the Outfest sing-along Xanadu screening where Dennis saved the day, Michael Beck's short shorts, the roller disco trend and Cher's role in it and that time Dennis got to meet ONJ and kind of choked. https://www.patreon.com/LinoleumKnife

They say there's no business like show business and that's why we decided to have some guests from another show! This week we welcome Nathan Beaudry and John Mottola from the spectacular Deep Purple Podcast, and we have something for the boys that is really special. I'm not too bashful to brag that I got rhythm, maybe not good enough for Alexander's Ragtime Band, but with these special guests, I'm convinced everything's coming up roses. This week we review the 1979 Ethel Merman Disco Album. They say it's wonderful for some people, but for me Merms, I get a kick out of you! In 1941 Brooklyn's Empire Rollerdrome opened its doors for the first time. Soon, it became the epicenter of the city's roller disco scene. Today, even though the space has been closed since 2007, it's clear that the spirit of the Empire Roller Disco lives on. Like in The City Reliquary, a community museum in Williamsburg, where a used rental skate hangs from the ceiling. In this episode we'll share an excerpt of a conversation that originally took place on The City Reliquary's podcast between host Tania Mohammad and rollerskating pioneer Eric Alston about this skate and the significance of The Empire Rollerdrome. Nathan and Eppy finish the Megan Dougherty cycle with S6E5 Love Is the Word. After a lengthy absence, Jim finally returns to Megan only to find that she's gotten engaged! Fair enough, but when her fiancé is accused of murder, of course Jim is going to help find out what's going on. This episode isn't really about the mystery, but it gives us an incredible look at the complicated relationship between Megan and Jim, and how they both process it coming to an end. We find this one a great, if bittersweet, way to say goodbye to Megan. Our shirt preorder runs through early April, 2023. CatBusRuss returns to Northwestern to challenge his cinematic endurance with the 40th Edition of AO B-Fest. “American Ninja” with a crowd sounded fun, but Willem Dafoe in the “Rock ‘n Roll Fable” “Streets of Fire” made it clear that this 24-hour marathon was a must attend. And surely “Xanadu's” infamy was over blown…right?

This is Maria Fernanda Vidaurrazaga, Director and Co-Creator of RADIO: Outcast, a fantasy western audio drama where disco meets desert shoot-outs. The show tells the story of three strangers during the end of the cowboy era on a fantastic journey across the American West. Jesse Rogers (voiced by Ivory Amor D'Francisca) is a young black cowboy seeking justice after his father's murder, Charles Osgood (voiced by Daniel Abraham Stevens) is a gay conman with a mysterious past, and Helix (voiced by Jade Duong) is a bisexual goddess from 1987 going through a nasty breakup. This is Episode 4 A-Side, The Roller Disco. In this episode, the trio just made it to the Idaho territory in the volatile landscape of the Valley of the Moon. Or what would be a volatile landscape were it not for the shelter they find, a roller rink out of time and a competition begins. Jesse names his horse. Helix finally gets to have fun. Out in the Valley of the Moon there is no sound but the wind...and music. Thank you for listening. The heat is on as the weekend arrives for The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour at long last, and what better way to burst into the best two days than with some high-sugar cereal, high-profile casting and high-energy televisual nonsense? Our hosts find themselves huddling around the gogglebox for the grand finalé of BBC's Swap Shop, following which there's just enough time to strap on eight wheels and fire up the funk to become an absolute health-and-safety liability for the grand finalé of the CHiPs's Roller Disco evening... What does it say about children's British live TV programming that there's not a single guest in Television Centre under the age of 40, apart from the one boy that usually hangs around outside? What does it say about American policing that two people on high-powered motorcycles can't catch three people on roller skates but one person in a car can, and she wasn't even trying? And what does it say about impressionability that Doctor Velvet and Blackout are now actively considering buying Heelys? Join the party, press Play and find out... Hope everyone's having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend, Junkies. The boys ate too much so now they have to take off their pants and slip into so comfortable shorts. Short films, that is! Up first, legendary underground short filmmaker Kenneth Anger brings us his occult, psychedelic opus Lucifer Rising from 1972/1980. Featuring music by infamous Manson Family murderer Bobby Beausoleil and starring Marianne Faithfull, Chris Jagger and Jimmy Page this Satanic-themed trip has become quite notorious for its visual style and troubled history. Then, in 1979 ABC aired an hour long prime-time special entitled Playboy's Roller Disco & Pajama Party. Hosted by Family Feud's Richard Dawson, the special featured live performances by The Chuck Mangione Quartet and The Village People as well as cameos by Jim Brown, James Caan, Ruth Buzzi and of course, a whole lot of Playboy Playmates. Finally, we take a look at a 2008 short film by filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Blade Runner 2049) about a group of rich people eating a ridiculous meal and falling through several floors of a high rise building in Next Floor. All this plus Thanksgiving meal ideas, Sean's financial issues, Goof Lumps, new footage of The Stuff found, multiple cuts of Phantom of the Mall, the guy from American Werewolf sings "Makin' It" and so much more.LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. This week on It Was A Thing on TV we talked about the jiggle factor way back in Episode 15 with "Flying High" this week we bring you two examples of this along with a memorable product featured in commercials around that time. First, like many things in the 70s and 80s, minor happenings were turned into celebrity-laden events for television. It happened to collegiate cheerleading in 1980, infusing it with such personalities as Magic Johnson, Catherine Bach, and...Willie Shoemaker? Next, as an homage to the recent Omnibus podcast episode about Ronco, we look at commercials for what is likely Ronco's most popular product, Mr. Microphone. Also Greg's dad also proposes new rules to football. Finally, join two of the top playboys from the 1970s, Hugh Hefner and Richard Dawson, for a night of roller skating, disco music, and tastefully done Playboy photo shoots in this 1979 special which epitomizes the late 70s nicely. On this weeks episode of the Space Cowboys RIPEcast, we are continuing to celebrate Bay Area DJ heroes by bringing you CHRIS G from the Black Rock Roller Disco Crew. Here are a few words from Chris about this mix: “i got a little tease on 1/1/1998 when i was brought (via a map point and an ink stamp from a nearby empty disco club) to my first Detroit techno party…But i throughly investigated, in disbelief, at what i was witnessing in the summer of 1998…An underground rave at a new party venue in a giant East Detroit warehouse (System)…John Acquaviva was the only DJ for 10 hours…48 18” Sub bins, and every new house & techno record played, blended in using a uninterrupted long and continuous train wreck free mix…Richie Hawtin became the staple for my next 10 years (after he was allowed to come back to the US and play in Detroit again), but John Acquaviva was always there, opening the first 4 hours of Rich’s epic (Plus 8 & M-NUS) Detroit parties. I've heard and reviewed many approaches to DJing over the last 21 years, so many new genres!…Minimal Techno was what Detroit provided socially for me, and Chicago was there, to occasionally influence me as well…I always loved the disco and house elements to John’s sets- and that became the main driving force behind my record selection and DJ style, still true today. I've been continuing an “only underground” tradition in the SF Bay Area area for 12 years now, along with a compatible alter ego- playing disco & funk remixes- remaining loyal to my Burning Man camp: The Black Rock Roller Disco. You can find me playing live, if you put a little effort into finding out where!” - DJ Chris G Check out more from Chris G here: soundcloud.com/dj-chris-g-2 Track Listing: Tracklist: Perculator (Funkerman 2018 mix) - Cajmere vs Funkerman Atomizer (Original Mix) - Format:B No School Rules (Original Mix) - Jed X Frying Fish (Original Mix) - DJ Dan, Ido Vision (Original Mix) - Alex Kennon Hydraulic (Original Mix) - DJ Mes Take It (Extended Mix) - Dom Dolla Crazy Horse (Original Mix) - Piero Pirupa Sex A’Pill (Milkwish & Jean Bacarreza Remix) - Miqro Do U Got Funk? Hayden goes through his phone notes to bring up things like Hibachi being human sea world, and a game called "Ghost in the Tazeyard" (20:00-32:00). We break for a tomato boy Shoutout for Natalie Blockhus and then dive into complaints including one sided doors, ketchup bottles, Gillis being a flake, and more. (32:00-47:00). # Turno de la segunda canción, “This Is It”, contadme alguna cosilla. # La tercera canción que escucharemos es “The Mototr of My Life”. Roller Disco Combo Things Under Control (Lucky Dan Records, 2017) Facebook_ YouTube_ Bandcamp_

Riddle me this: when the Roller Disco Doo-Dah comes to Kenosha, who should you pick as your partner? Hyde, the guy you like that hates Disco and has already turned you down for partnering? Or Fez. The guy who's a wicked good dancer who really wants to compete with you and win? This is a tough one. Take your time, Jackie. In this episode, Cheyenne and Rain discuss Season 3, Episode 5: Roller Disco -- in which Fez has all the right moves, until he contemplates taking advantage of a drunk girl, Kelso has all the wrong moves, until he has a really human moment with Donna ... before promptly trying to assault her and calling her a tease, and Earl decides to sue Red for wrongful termination. Eric is allowed to streak in front of the President while wearing a Nixon mask -- even if he bumped his head or something and can't remember it happening. [We genuinely don't know if this is a character thing or a writer thing]. Donna, however, is not allowed to moon the camera at a pep rally. That is what we learn today, kids! You see, Eric owns her butt, apparently. Obviously. Makes total sense. In this episode, Cheyenne and Rain discuss Season 2, Episode 26: Moon Over Point Place -- in which Eric is a prude, Donna is hilarious, Fez is mad at The White Man, Kelso loses some cash, Jackie signs her and Hyde up for Roller Disco, Hyde is super mean about it, Jackie buys weed from her maid to prove that she's not A Square, and Hyde goes to jail for it. This week, we look at a two-part episode of late '70s, early '80s feel-good show CHiPs and posit the idea that it might be the quintessential show of the era. In just two hours, John (Larry Wilcox) and Ponch (Erik Estrada have to help out a troubled rock star and his manager, stop a duo bent on sparking car accidents, foil a roller-skating gang of thieves, keep a roller-skating kid on the right side of the rink, and most importantly recruit stars for a charity roller disco! Can they do any of it? How many cars will crash? How many stars will show? How many stars will crash? Plus, the return of not one but two BOTNS favorites!

Before drum machines, before MIDI, and before samplers there were beautiful records created by talented musicians. During the period of ’78-’79, the foundation for the soon to emerge Hi-NRG, Boogie & House genres were being laid. Lollipop’s Roller Disco Armageddon is a musical snapshot of this period - taken just barely before “cool” became cliché. This mix perfectly captures the glossy, last gasps of a genre soon decimated by commercialization.Of course, no official roller disco soundtrack would be complete without soaring, symphonic strings, scratchy guitar, plucky bass and sexy, growling horns. The unique experience of the amplified disco sound in the roller rink is also accurately re-created with the assistance of a custom-programmed acoustic reverb mirror. This podcast mix faithfully highlights songs that packed the skating rink floor and raised the energy level through the roof. With an incredible playlist mostly exiled from pop-disco radio programs, many of these “one hit wonders” and the rare 12 inch versions had to be lovingly transferred from my personal vinyl collection to authentically recreate a magical Saturday night at the legendary Hub Axle Roller Rink.I know you’ll enjoy this mix. For some of you, it’ll bring back heart-warming memories and for those who missed it, here is your contextually-correct opportunity to experience it for the first time. Looks on the small side. Good luck! Http://Arkclothing.com Happy February disco lovers! I am really excited about this one because I adore disco and love to rollerskate! Hence the whole roller disco fascination ;) I've got a fab Roller Disco mix from Henry Greenwood (UK) Here is a blurb he sent along about himself: "I've been DJing for about 15 years now, during which time my love of House and Hip-Hop led me back to Disco and Funk, all of which form the backbone of my DJ sets. I've been re-editing tunes to play out for about 10 years, which enables me to play eclectic sets full of exclusive versions of tracks, mixed up with songs from many other genres. Basically, if it rocks the party, it's going in! The Roller Disco mixes were a labour of love, starting off as a personal project which I had to get out of my system! But the response has been so amazing, they are now looking like the beginnings of a whole series. I've had many gigs off the back of them, and always on the lookout for more! Keep your eyes peeled for more edits on vinyl and download, some original material, and hopefully some DJ sets somewhere near you!" "Special Hangover", as played exclusively by Greg Wilson, The track is now out on a vinyl 12" of re-edits/blends, available everywhere! 'The local teenage haunt in Norridge Village, Illinois was the Hub Axle. Known by most as the BEST ROLLERSKATING RINK EVER! To this day, I've never seen a rink that could compare to it's size. It was twice as big as it's closest competitor (Chicago's Rainbow Roller Rink on Clark Street) and it is missed and mourned by everyone who was a regular. This mix reflects the most magical time in my life. This was when the seeds of the realization that I could mix records for a crowd were planted. Weekdays existed to only fill the void between my next visit to the rink for a speedy whip around it's glorious wood floor. We waited in long lines in 3 feet of snow to get into the Hub's disco roller skating on Friday nights and Saturday nights. What a thrill! The energy and heat that radiated from that place literally steamed up all the windows. The fantastic lighting - awesome sound system. Brilliant!!
