Totally Booked: LIVE! In this special episode of the podcast (in-person at the Whitby Hotel with a live audience!), Zibby chats with National Book Award-winning author Susan Choi about FLASHLIGHT, a gorgeous, ferociously smart, and impossibly heartbreaking novel that traces a father's disappearance across time, nations, and memory. Susan discusses the emotional and structural complexity of the book—how it was written out of order and quilted together with research and imagination. She delves into themes of family, grief, and cultural identity, and shares why she champions complex, even unlikeable characters. Finally, she reflects on her writing journey, from childhood stories and struggling through grad school to eventually working at The New Yorker and writing her first novel.Purchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/4dV88wcShare, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens! A 10-year-old girl, Louisa, and her father take a walk on breakwater in Japan, where her family is living. Louisa is later found on a beach – her father has disappeared. She and her mother are left on their own – but the tragedy doesn't bring them closer together, at least for a long time. Susan Choi's new novel Flashlight follows this family across generations and a vast historical expanse. In today's episode, Choi speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about why her protagonist fends off love, her interest in the historical tensions between Korea and Japan, and the benefit of writing in chronological order. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayNotes: include dig reviews; past books covered on NPR; any author profiles.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Acclaimed fiction writer Susan Choi joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss her new novel, Flashlight. Choi talks about the opening incident, in which a girl goes for a walk on the beach in Japan with her father only for him to disappear, presumably drowned. Choi explains the novel's relationship to a short story she published in The New Yorker in 2020 and how the father's past emerged as she worked on the book. She reflects on his childhood as an ethnic Korean raised in Japan in the 1940s, the difficult choices Koreans in Japan faced as Japanese occupation ended and Korea split into North and South after World War II, and the state of affairs today, as South Korea transitions to new leadership. She reads from Flashlight.  To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with Santo Marabella. I was honored to have the opportunity to have my old friend from Berks County, Santo, on my show.  We have been friends for over fifteen years now.  We first got to know each other when we both served on the board of the Berks County Visitors Bureau and through volunteering with the Reading Filmfest.  However, I never really knew Santo's story of how he arrived in the United States until recently.  It is an incredible story, and again, I feel honored to be able to give Santo a place at my table, and help tell a little bit of his story on my show. Santo D. Marabella, MBA, DSW, The Practical Prof® is an author, playwright, filmmaker, speaker and educator with writing, directing and producing credits for books, television pilots, a musical, short films and plays. He is the co-founder ReadingFilmFEST and the ReadingFilm Office, for which he served as ReadingFilm Commissioner (2006-2018). Recent projects include writer/director of the play Rocky Road Ain't Always Sweet, (2024). producer, AVA (2023); producer, FLASHLIGHT (2023); director/co-producer, workshop for Love Is Afoot!, an original musical (2023); writer/producer/director, THE CAREGIVER (2022). Marabella, Professor Emeritus of Management, Moravian University, is a member of The Lambs®, The Dramatists Guild of America and Theatre Communications Group. His newest film, Il Mio Posto a Tavola (My Place at the Table) is a first-person documentary which examines our universal need to belong, as seen through the heart of the filmmaker. Born in a Catholic orphanage in Aosta, Italy, and flown to the United States just one week shy of his first birthday, Santo D. Marabella was one of over 3700 Italian born children adopted by Italian American parents between 1951 and 1969. Known as the “Baby Scoop” era, tens of thousands of Italian unwed mothers were forced to give their children up for adoption, leaving behind generations of children devastated by their perceived abandonment. Though he was the treasured only child of his adoptive parents, Santo was bullied by his peers and struggled from an early age to fit in and connect with others. Growing up, the realization that he was gay further deepened this isolation, straining his relationship with the Church to which he was so dedicated and the parents he so loved. Despite self-doubt and fear, he refused to be stopped. He tried harder and achieved more, carving out a life as a caregiver, educator, writer and artist. But he was still on the outside. In this journey to belonging, Santo returns to Italy to find his place at the table (posto a tavola) To find out more about the film, check out its website at https://ilmiopostofilm.com/.

As she puts it, “It's like a peer who's full of energy, always kind, and there to help them think through their ideas.”If you're wondering how AI fits into your child's education, this episode is for you. Kanishka's perspective is both grounded and hopeful. *The music in this video is copyrighted and all rights reserved to the respective copyright holders* In the premiere episode of The Audio Files, hosts Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot fire up Saturday night with a high-voltage celebration of all things music. From their roots as lifelong metalheads to their guilty pleasures in disco and Motown, the duo delivers deep musical passion with equal parts reverence and riotous fun. They kick off with a tribute to AC/DC and Casey & the Sunshine Band, then trade stories of their earliest musical influences, Brad's Monkees obsession and metal awakening via Sepultura and Megadeth, and Jay's unforgettable childhood brush with David Lee Roth (and the comment that ended a potential stepdad relationship in one sentence). The show includes a heartfelt Mother's Day In Memoriam segment, spotlighting Glenn Miller and Blondie, plus a sobering tribute to Blondie's late drummer Clem Burke. The pair also introduce a recurring segment, Video Killed the Radio Star, launching with Billy Squier's legendary career-killing video for “Rock Me Tonight.” From punk and metal to disco and funk, The Audio Files is a love letter to music across genres, with live commentary, backstories, and raw appreciation for what makes music timeless. As they sign off with Parliament's “Flashlight,” it's clear: this isn't just another music podcast. It's a full-body jam session and a joyride through the soundtrack of your life.

Dennis is joined via Zoom by Director Lovell Holder & Writer-Performer Roger Q. Mason, the duo behind the provocative and beautifully-crafted new film Lavender Men, which is based on Mason's hit stage play of the same name. The story centers on Taffeta (they/them, played by Mason), the put-upon stage manager of a play about Abraham Lincoln. After one too many backstage indignities, Tafetta cracks and decides to take the whole show over and narrate it as their fantasia and things get wild from there. Roger talks about the film's central themes of why do we, as humans, like what we like and the gulf that often exists between what we desire and what we need. Lovell talks about using the films Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Joe Wright's Anna Karenina as touchstones while making the piece, the day during the shoot when he ran out of steam and ideas and meeting Roger when then were both in their late teens. They both talk about working with the editor Morgan Halsey whose father Richard Halsey happened to speak at a screening of American Gigolo that Dennis saw on the very same day that he did this interview. Other topics include: eating an entire apple pie on stage, Mason refusing to take a nap during naptime at the YMCA as a child, the friends that pitched in to make the movie happen and Roger's belief that, "It's never easy to tell the truth in a world that capitalizes on lies and illusion."

Thank you so much to Vulpine Taproom for letting us record at your game night. Thanks to Josh, Chris, Abraham, Shoe, Brandon, Sean, and another Chris for taking the time to talk with us! (And, once again, serious gratitude to Vulpine Taproom.) As usual, we have some notes on our conversations:Abraham mentioned the Mothership system as well as the original Dragonlance setting which starts with Dragons of Despair. We talked about why TSR had to release so many sourcebooks back in this Season 2 Flashlight about the history of D&D.We discuss the right system for running a cyberpunk-themed game with Shoe. Neither of us remembers the year for Cyberpunk Red - it's 2045. Sorry about this. We also discuss the Shadowrun system, which you'll be hearing about in next week's interview! Also, if anyone has any suggestions for running a cyberpunk-themed game, send them our way and we'll pass them along to Shoe. When we talk with Chris (the second Chris) we discuss Cortex and also mention Lancer. You might remember Lancer from last episode's s interview with Tyler. We ended up talking with way more people than we can fit in a single episode. Given that we're getting close to the end of Season 3, the second half of our evening at Vulpine Taproom will likely end up in Season 4. You'll hear more from some of these people in that episode. In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael visits Jim Barnett Park to discuss the exciting events and programs offered by Winchester City Parks with Parks Director, Chris Konyar.  Chris shared that spring has arrived, and with it, a flurry of activities at the park. The turf field, described as the crown jewel, is particularly striking against the backdrop of a transitioning season. One of the most anticipated events is the Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt on April 4th. This unique twist on a traditional Easter egg hunt involves children using flashlights to search for eggs on the turf field at night. Last year's event was a massive success, attracting over 700 children. Due to its popularity, pre-registration is encouraged to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The park also hosts Inflatable Fun Days featuring a variety of fun inflatables for kids and adults alike. These events are themed, with the upcoming one set for March 16th and 17th with a St. Patrick's theme. Additionally, the park offers an Ultimate Frisbee league on Wednesday nights, which has become very popular among adults. Preparations are underway for the July 3rd 'Red, White, and Boom' event, an evening of baseball, fireworks, and family fun. The event garners significant attendance, with over 7,000 people joining last year. Winchester Parks is looking for a variety of vendors, from food trucks to craft sellers, to participate in this well-loved event. The conversation also delved into the park's aquatic programs. With the conclusion of the high school swim season, spring marks the beginning of various swim lessons. Notably, beginners' swim lessons are free for city residents. The park is also hiring lifeguards and swim instructors, offering training and certification in-house. In a new initiative, the park has launched a brick campaign fundraiser. Patrons can buy bricks to be placed in the concourse leading to the new turf fields. The funds raised will support park improvements and maintenance, ensuring that facilities remain in top condition for years to come. Familyland, one of the park's playground areas, is set to undergo major renovations. To ensure the new playground meets the community's needs, the park is holding a suggestion session where patrons can provide input on the features they would like to see. This project aims to create an inclusive and exciting play area for children of all abilities. For those interested in staying informed about all park activities and updates, the best way is to sign up for the Winchester Parks newsletter by visiting their website: winchester.va.gov/parks.
