James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Scientific American, Outside, The New York Times, The Atlantic, National Public Radio, The San Francisco Chronicle, and more. His latest book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, was released May 26, 2020 by Riverhead/Penguin Random House and was an instant New York Times and London Sunday Times bestseller. Breath explores how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly. This sounds impossible, but it’s true. Snoring, sleep apnoea, asthma, allergies and even autoimmune diseases are among the most prevalent diseases in the modern world, and all of them can be either exacerbated, or sometimes caused, by poor breathing. Nestor spent years in laboratories and ancient burial sites, working with researchers at Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, and other institutions to figure out what went wrong with our breathing--and how to fix it. Breath will be translated into more than 30 languages in 2021.He lives and breathes in San Francisco. Today I’m honoured to be speaking with Robert Plomin - Professor of Behavioural Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience at King's College London. Robert has previously held positions at the University of Colorado Boulder, and at Pennsylvania State University. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and of the British Academy for his twin studies and his ground-breaking work in behavioural genetics. He is the author or co-author of many books, including G is for Genes: The Impact of Genetics on Education and Achievement (with Kathryn Asbury), and most recently, Blueprint: How DNA Makes Us Who We Are.I’ve spent the past three weeks wrapping my head around Blueprint, and I must admit, I’ve become a little obsessed. So much has changed since I last read up on behavioural genetics. The DNA revolution is now upon us, and if you thought the technological revolution shook up the world, you ain’t seen nothing yet!Today, Robert and I discuss the following:· How Robert came to study behavioural genetics· The history of behavioural genetics· Why Robert waited 30 years to write Blueprint· The concept of heritability – a mysterious 6-syllable word that is perhaps the most confused word in psychology· The mind-bending finding that heritability actually increases with age - in spite of our best efforts - we're become more and more like our parents with each passing day.

Now aged in his 80s, he is asking us to turn the lens on ourselves in his new book, The Inner Self.Through rich storytelling, and psychological theory, Hugh explores our 'top 20' hiding places. From Addiction to Ambition, busyness to social media, arrogance to victimhood - such places inhibit the desire for self-examination. Spending too long in our favourite “hiding places” only increases the risk that we will live an inauthentic half-life, robbing us of our full potential, forever wondering why we feel permanently unsatisfied.A great conversation for anyone wanting to delve deeper, and ask themselves perhaps the most searching question of all: Who am I?

“We hurt where we care. We care, where we hurt” – Dr Steven HayesWhy is it that the things that can cause us the most pain, are often the things we care about the most deeply? For instance, I’ve never met a client with social anxiety who didn’t have a deep longing to be socially accepted by their peers. Moreover, I’ve never met a person with depression who didn’t desperately wish they could be engaged in the richness and fullness of life again.Often, we turn our back on our true values because of past pain we want to avoid, and when it comes to achieving our goals, we have two choices:1. We can either grit our teeth and do whatever it takes to get the job done (a results-focused/ future - oriented approach)OR2. We can live each moment in the present, engaging with our values, and doing what matters most (a values- focused/ present – orientated approach).Sure, both paths may lead you to your destination, but at what cost? Personally, I learnt this the hard way, and when the final bill came, it was far more than I could afford.Today I discuss values. I identify what values are, and why they matter. I also show you how to reconnect with your values, because often, it matters not “what” you achieved in life, but rather “how” you lived as you achieved. This I believe, is the true definition of success.Enjoy!
