bengreenfieldfitness.com/quinton Robert Slovak is my go-to "guru" for all things water. He first joined me in the podcast "Water & Water Filtration: Everything You Need To Know About Water Filters, Alkaline Water, Structured Water, Hydrogen-Rich Water, Deuterium Depleted Water & Much More!" ...and then also in the podcast "Everything You Need To Know About How To Use Hydrogen Water: Timing, Dosing, Delivery Mechanisms, Hydrogen Tablets, Hydrogen Water Machines, Hydrogen Inhalers & Much More!" ...and now Robert is back for a three-peat to talk all things minerals, Quinton, advanced hydration methods, and beyond! Robert is a degreed mechanical, aeronautical, astronautical engineer best known for co-founding Water Factory Systems in the early 1970s. He and his brother were among the early developers of reverse osmosis (RO) technology and its many applications. Their successful innovations encompassed home and office RO drinking water systems, bottled water production, laboratory purification, hemodialysis, seawater desalination, microchip production, bottled water production, water vending, spot-free vehicle washing, and scores more. As a result of the rapid growth of RO applications, Robert’s ongoing seminars, and a best-selling industry book on the subject of point of use (POU) RO, he became a well-known figure in the water industry. Robert officially retired from the US water industry in 1996 and went on to bring his knowledge and experience to Brazil, Asia, and other international markets. He put together a team and published Agua Latino America to establish a legitimate water equipment and education infrastructure in Brazil and South America. His “students” continue to play a major role in Brazil’s water industry. In 2004, while in a remote location of Brazil, Robert became seriously ill and was introduced to an obscure 1897 medical discovery known as Original Quinton Marine Plasma (named after the famous revolutionary biologist René Quinton). Robert attributes his "jungle" survival to Quinton's remarkable healing properties. This ocean-harvested nutraceutical contains the entire Periodic Table of organo-complexed minerals and trace elements as well as essential and rare micronutrients and has been continuously produced for more than a century. Having been an avid student of health and nutrition science for decades, Robert recognized the remarkable history and efficacy of Quinton Marine Plasma in supporting a wide range of the most difficult health conditions and has distributed it to leading-edge clinics and health practitioners around the world since 2008. For the past nine years, Robert’s focus has been on bringing a new nutraceutical breakthrough called “Molecular Hydrogen” (H2) to medical professionals and health-minded consumers. This “smallest molecule in the Universe” has been overlooked for its remarkable health benefits until now. With more than 800 worldwide health studies on the subject, physicians, researchers, and clinicians have been proclaiming H2 as the most unique and versatile antioxidant and signaling molecule. In 2010, Robert co-developed a practical way for everyone to benefit from this discovery by creating the first reactive hydrogen tablet that infuses water with a supersaturated concentration of H2 gas. This proven nutraceutical is now in its 9th year of distribution in both professional medical and consumer markets. In 2011, Robert became a founding investor in the Quicksilver Scientific Corp., which was developing a groundbreaking new technology to deliver nutrients and nutraceuticals to the cells: nano-encapsulated liposomes. In just a few years, Quicksilver Scientific established its scientific dominance in this growing field and is currently expanding its product scope and global distribution. Recently, several of the key formulas offered by Quicksilver Scientific have become a cornerstone in the ongoing battle against the coronavirus. While attending medical and wellness conferences throughout North America, Robert recognized the persistent minefield of water-related misinformation encountered by doctors, patients, and consumers alike—that’s after spending nearly 50 years in the water technology industry. This unsettling experience soon turned into the motivation to do something about it and Water And Wellness was established in 2017. A team with more than 150 years of combined experience was assembled to create a product line of advanced POU and point of entry (POE) water treatment systems for health- and wellness-minded consumers. In addition, a line of synergistic water additives was formulated for the consumer market including Quinton and QuintEssential minerals & trace elements, Active pH Restore alkalizing mineral powder, Active H2 ULTRA molecular H2 tablets, and Active Ribose C high-bioavailability vitamin C. Recently, Robert’s 20-year interest in Deuterium Depleted Water (DDW) took a new direction forward. With the revival of Soviet-era research from the 1960s and recent announcements explaining the profound health benefits of DDW, Robert and his associate acted quickly in creating a new company, Litewater Scientific. Their strategy is to offer a more advanced and affordable brand of DDW for consumers and health practitioners. The Litewater brand of DDW is now available here in 1/2-liter (5 ppm) and 2-liter (10 ppm) bottles throughout North America. Robert continues to be a very active figure in the rapidly expanding role of water in the wellness and anti-aging community, making appearances and presentations worldwide. During this discussion, you'll discover: -Why hydrogen has been the biggest surprise of Robert's career...8:15 -How Chromium is used to stabilize blood sugar...13:45 -How Robert discovered the magic of Quinton minerals...18:10 -How Quinton is harvested...25:45 -Where in the ocean Quinton originates from...34:20 -Early proof of the efficacy of Quinton minerals...37:40 -How Quinton upset the pharmaceutical industry...43:00 -The effects of Quinton injected via muscle...46:50 -Benefits of consuming seawater in moderation...52:55 -The difference between isotonic and hypertonic Quinton...56:30 -Hacking the absorbability of Quinton with light, water vortices, etc....1:06:30 -And much more! Robert Krayn is the Co-Founder and CEO of Talkiatry, a company working to change the fact that mental health experiences are often intimidating and complicated for people who need help. Talkiatry makes finding and visiting a qualified professional simple. By combining technology with accessibility and comfort for patients and providers, they achieve the depth of a fully featured psychiatry and therapy network while having the immediacy of a clinic. Prior to the founding of Talkiatry, Robert was Vice President at MidOcean Partners, where he spent 5 years as a senior analyst. He oversaw a $300M portfolio of high yield bonds, equities, and derivatives in the consumer, retail healthcare and other sectors. His experience and understanding of these sectors helped him develop the proprietary business model for Talkiatry. Before joining MidOcean, he was an analyst at Guggenheim Partners in their Mergers & Acquisitions Group in New York as well as a credit analyst at the Bank of New York Mellon. Robert graduated Summa Cum Laude from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance. Robert's passion for mental healthcare stems from personal experience. In December of 2016, just days before Christmas, he was assaulted by a neighbor during a home invasion in the New York apartment he shared with his fiancé. Struggling with feeling comfortable in his own home, he began seeking mental healthcare. The journey to get appropriate help only compounded the problem as he was forced to see a cash-pay out-of-network provider with a lengthy waitlist. Arriving at the basement-level psychiatrist’s office, he was confronted with tape-covered doorbells with hastily scrawled names beneath them and no reception staff, a concept all-too-familiar to New Yorkers. Fast forward to 2019, after having spent over 5 years investing professionally in consumer and retail-health companies for a large asset management firm in New York, Robert decided he wanted his next career move to have an impact. He combined his passion and his previous experience to start a new venture, one that would expand the access and reduce the stigma of mental healthcare - Talkiatry.      About Our Partner This episode is brought to you Varia Search. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and of the British Academy for his twin studies and his ground-breaking work in behavioural genetics. He is the author or co-author of many books, including G is for Genes: The Impact of Genetics on Education and Achievement (with Kathryn Asbury), and most recently, Blueprint: How DNA Makes Us Who We Are.I’ve spent the past three weeks wrapping my head around Blueprint, and I must admit, I’ve become a little obsessed. So much has changed since I last read up on behavioural genetics. The DNA revolution is now upon us, and if you thought the technological revolution shook up the world, you ain’t seen nothing yet!Today, Robert and I discuss the following:· How Robert came to study behavioural genetics· The history of behavioural genetics· Why Robert waited 30 years to write Blueprint· The concept of heritability – a mysterious 6-syllable word that is perhaps the most confused word in psychology· The mind-bending finding that heritability actually increases with age - in spite of our best efforts - we're become more and more like our parents with each passing day.

Today’s guest is pioneering conservation photographer, Robert Glenn Ketchum. Robert's imagery and books have helped to define contemporary color photography while at the same time addressing critical national environmental issues, having made him one of the most successful artists and activists in American history. In today’s episode, Robert talks about the development of his career, the many adventures his work has taken him on, and the social change these projects have kickstarted. We dive straight in hearing Robert talk about the Pebble Mine campaign he is involved in currently where he is fighting against the construction of the largest gold and cyanide leech mine in the history of the world in Southwest Alaska. From there, Robert rewinds to his days as a student at UCLA in the 60s, where he started his photography career taking snaps of the famous bands that played in his neighborhood. On the way back from the Monterey Pop Festival, Robert camped out at Limekiln Creek to break the trip up, and in a moment of contemplation next to a quiet stream he got the idea to pivot into conservation photography. Robert’s career blew up after that event, and he tells one epic tale after another about the different campaigns he fell into, the huge names he rubbed shoulders with, and the incredible ripple effects his photographs had. We also get to hear Robert's thoughts on some of the most vital sides of being an artist, how to secure money, and how to increase the clout of one’s projects. Wrapping up our conversation, Robert tells a few more awe-inspiring stories about how he started translating his prints into textiles after discovering the quality Chinese embroidery. Tune in for tales of adventure, discovery, and serendipity, all powered by a passion for creativity and our natural environment with Robert today.   Key Points From This Episode: The campaign Robert is working on to protest the Pebble Mine in South West Alaska. Robert’s book, Southwest Alaska, which talks about overfishing in Crystal Bay. Saving San Ignacio Lagoon with Joel Reynolds from the NRDC and recruiting him for the Southwest Alaska work. The multi-tiered nature of the campaigns Robert works on; drawing on multiple channels. The funds necessary to launch these big campaigns which groups smaller than the NRDC wouldn’t manage. The power of branding to spread public awareness about bad practices. Differences in quality between wild and farmed salmon and Robert’s adventures with Alaskan locals. Robert’s experiences shooting famous bands in LA in the 1960s. How Robert got the idea to transition into environmental photography on the way back from Monterey Pop. They have educated more than 77 000 kids on sustainability and how to cut carbon emissions with renewable energy.  Today you will learn: How Robert almost gave up this project, and what was the trigger with his neighbor and his daughter that convinced him to double the efforts to make it work How they adapted their strategy to win the trust of schools and their potential partners (councils, community energy groups,...) to be able to sell their solution to schools without being seen as a competitor  How Robert tried 3 different methods of lead generation...two methods who failed and the third one that was successful How they set the financing, business, and legal models of the company to develop the projects in each country they operate, and to make sure it is attractive for all stakeholders (investors, schools, and Solar for Schools)  How they grew their business with different types of partnerships (solar project developers, utilities, community energy groups, councils,...) Which strategy they used to develop a product that was really attractive for their audience, and how he positioned themselves in order to be attractive to the councils of schools, which initially see them as a competitor and didn’t really want to support them. Why Robert chose to make a for-profit company instead of a non-profit How to know when to give up or when to keep on iterating with your idea Why his experience in the solar sector made him decide to launch in two countries even though they were at an early stage, and how that strategy saved him from bankruptcy.

When I heard Tal Ben Shahar on Arm Chair Expert I was introduced to the concept of positive psychology or - scientific study of what makes life most worth living”  It’s a scientific approach to studying human thoughts, feelings, and behavior, with a focus on strengths instead of weaknesses, building the good in life instead of repairing the bad, and taking the lives of average people up to “great” instead of focusing solely on moving those who are struggling up to “normal”.  What makes life worth living and building our quote unquote good life is going to look different for each of us...and I wanted to explore how we can get there so we can keep moving towards creating our definition of living well.  Many think that happiness, like success, comes from getting what they want. But new evidence from positive psychology suggests that happiness is something else, or at least something more.    Today’s guest reminded me that while external things can make us happy our happiness already exists within...we just have to get to know it...accept it...and fulfill it.  Robert Mack, M.A.P.P., is the author of four critically-acclaimed, celebrity-endorsed books to date, an elite life coach, and a coveted keynote speaker.   Robert is a highly sought-after television personality, guest expert, and Positive Psychology Practitioner. He can often be seen on various television shows across the world - including The Today Show, The CBS Early Show, and others. He also contributes to articles for numerous magazines, including Oprah, Self, Health, Cosmopolitan, and others.   He helps individuals and organizations achieve an energizing balance of authentic personal happiness and effortless professional success, based on time-tested, face-valid, empirical data and timeless, transcendental wisdom.   We covered a lot during our 75-minute chat including… How Robert turned a childhood of unhappiness, anxiety, stress, and self-loathing into his life’s work  What the science of positive psychology is  How to find happiness on the inside by through thinking less while being, and doing more The progress paradox and the chicken or the egg dilemma of happiness & success Why it’s okay to feel immense gratitude and also depressed at the same time How to remain unattached to the things that we want How happiness in itself is the greatest form of success, but can also lead you to have the things traditionally associated with success.  The common trains of happy and unhappy people  That happiness is simple but it takes practice What a psychological flow state is and how to identify your own  And advice for those struggling to find their own happiness   THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE Find your flow state!    Get in Touch with Robert Mack:  Instagram  Website Instagram    Stay in Touch with Me: Instagram Website   The Happiness Lab  Learn More

So, you need to learn how to craft your profile, interact with clients on UpWork in a way that’s optimized for the algorithm as well as the actual human and the business that’s going to hire you.” “You can’t have good results on Upwork if you don’t have a good profile optimized for the algorithm and the human” “People post an opportunity on Upwork. Then all the freelancers jump on it and usually 10 to 30 or so people who apply for each job. If you just kinda jump in there with everybody else, you're just in the pile, you have no control. The key to avoiding in being at the bottom is learning to be the first person to apply for the job. On Upwork they give you all sorts of tools to refine and narrow down the entire list of job opportunities they provide.” “The key to a good proposal you have to do two things. The first thing is you have to be time-efficient. You have to send an epic proposal in 3-5 minutes. You have to send a minimum of 10 – 20 if you have no reviews. If you have a crappy profile you have to send some more.” “The proposal has to be custom tailored. We have to remember the human will have to hire you. What do they want to see? They want to see someone who has read the description of their job and they replied in a custom way that acknowledges everything they need. “ “Ideally the proposal is inviting people to have a free 30-minute phone call. Free 30 minute phone call where you just talk with the client to talk if you guys are a good fit. Phone calls give you a higher chance to get hired.” Resources People Gary V Socials Robert O'Kruk - Robert’s website Robert O'Kruk - Robert’s YouTube channel Robert O'Kruk - Robert’s IG Apps Calendly

Growing Your Financial Advisory Practice | Insights for Financial Advisors, Planners and Investment Managers

Financial advising is a profession that draws in an eclectic mix of individuals who come from different backgrounds and whose career paths haven’t always been straightforward and predictable. Today’s guest formerly served in the military as a forensic accountant; now he not only runs his own financial practice, he’s also the world’s first (and probably only) forensic accountant blockchain professional. He joins the show to share what he’s learned from his military experience that has helped him serve his clients and grow his practice on referrals alone. Robert Watterson is the owner of Watterson Financial Solutions, a firm that handles financial planning, accounting, compliance, insurance, asset protection and tax services. Listen to hear what Robert has to say about how working in forensic accounting informs his current work, how he remains focused with so many different areas of practice, and how his interest in blockchain technology helped him develop an audit-ready bookkeeping system. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: How Robert moved from military forensic accountant to advisor (5:00) How his military experience informs the way he acquires clients (9:10) Staying focused while providing different offerings (18:40) How the different parts of Robert’s business build on one another (21:40) The blockchain’s impact on the financial industry (23:40) Robert’s audit-ready bookkeeping system (30:30) Robert’s biggest challenge in growing his practice (35:10) Why service is the most important part of running a practice (38:00) Links and Resources: Watterson Financial Send Robert an email Quotes by Robert: “In the military, one of the things that they taught us was never look for what’s good for you; look for what’s good for the overall project you’re working on. And if you’re working with a client, that means the overall good for the client.” “Make yourself referable… If you are referable, they will come back to you for work or they will have somebody come to you for work.” “If you don’t worry about making money off every client, the client will worry about making sure you make money.” With Robert’s different interests and areas of expertise – forensic accounting, blockchain technology, compliance and financial planning – it can be difficult to see how everything fits together. And yet, he’s able to pull knowledge and skills from different areas to create a unique practice in a way that we can all learn from. Step Three Do rewrites based on feedback if necessary Do Rewrites When I received the first draft of the script “The Stupid Economy” from Robert Lynn, I had a plan to read it at a designated time. BUT, I wanted to get a quick glance because my Gemini mind -meaning curious, curious, curious- could not wait until my scheduled reading time. So, I started to glance through it. I ended up grabbing a cup of coffee, postponing whatever it was I thought was more important than reading the script right then, and I read that script right then. It was clear to me that I had a gem in my hands and I voraciously consumed every word. As an actor yourself, you know what this feels like; that every single word was specifically written from your DNA. It was my rhythm and it was my voice! How Robert nailed that in the first draft is a magical genius I will never understand but he continues to do it with every request! These rewrites should inform you as the writer, or the playwright you enlisted to write this solo show for you, how to mold the show into a performance piece for YOU that highlights YOUR talents, YOUR message, and YOUR voice! Based on Feedback If Necessary If you’ve been following this step by step in order, you know that doing the rewrites starts with the reading in front of a selected audience at a local venue. After we did the reading, we received quite a bit of delicious feedback. Some of that feedback we took: like threading the Corporate Insider character throughout the production like a Narrator who coldly tells the audience what is. And, some of that feedback we left: like removing LaMonica Johnson from the show because it appeared like I was playing a “black woman”. We left LaMonica Johnson because she was the voice of wisdom and reason in the show and could have been any race (it is not expressly indicated in the script whether she is black, white, hispanic, mixed, or other)! As an actor, I created a character. The character I created, was actually over 250 pounds. I weigh 150. But, the audience believed I was a bigger woman because of my mannerisms. What the audience believed about LaMonica’s race was their own. As Anais Nin stated so eloquently, “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” It is not your job as an artist to hide from the scarey, social trappings. It is your job as an artist to shine a light on them. That’s a quote from me. Rehearsal The rewrites from the feedback are continuously enhanced as part of the rehearsal process. But, that’s a whole article for another time. What you should take from this session is to stop reading, stop listening, stop watching and go DO the rewrites from the feedback from the reading! Break a leg! And, have a ball. Today’s guest is a science journalist and author who has written extensively about the pharmaceutical industry. Robert Whitaker is also the founder of Mad in America, a nonprofit organization that focuses on getting people to rethink psychiatric care in the United States. As you will learn in today’s episode, one in six Americans takes a psychiatric drug. More than 130,000 children under the age of five are taking addictive anti-anxiety drugs prescribed by doctors. Whitaker has spent most of his career focused on changing the current drug-based paradigm of psychiatric care in the U.S. He has written three books about the pharmaceutical industry and the psychiatric profession. He has looked at how drugs used for depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are causing a spike in America’s disability numbers. He also has investigated the history of medications prescribed for these disorders, how they are marketed, and why they’ve grown in popularity. Discover magazine named Whitaker’s first book, “Mad in America,” one of the best science books of 2002. His second book, “Anatomy of an Epidemic,” won the 2010 Investigative Reporters and Editors book award for best investigative journalism. His third book, “Psychiatry Under the Influence,” is a textbook used in university classrooms around the country. [00:45:10] How many drugs may have efficacy in clinical trials over the short term, but overwhelming evidence shows over the long term many medications actually increase a person’s risk of becoming chronically ill and functionally impaired. In this episode of The Knowledge Project, I have the brilliant Robert Greene. Robert is the author of 5 New York Times bestsellers, including The 48 Laws of Power and The 33 Strategies of War. He's also written on mastery and seduction. Robert’s books have been somewhat controversial over the years and have been called amoral, cunning, and even ruthless for what they reveal. Yet millions of readers, from mid-level managers to hip-hop royalty and corporate executives have revered his work as a sort of canonized scripture for the ambitious. In this conversation, we cover a lot of ground, including: Why Robert believes his first book, 48 Laws of Power has continued to sell steadily for over two decades. What Robert calls “alive time” and “dead time” and how we can optimize each day to be filled with “alive time” and live the life we’re proud of The one skill that determines how far you’ll get in life, no matter how talented you are in anything else Robert’s research method and how he finds such unique and interesting examples What Robert looks for when he reads, and what qualities separate good books from excellent books How Robert developed his famous note card system to extract the meat out of anything he reads Why Robert insists on writing all his notes longhand even though it’s less convenient and less accessible than taking notes digitally What Robert’s daily routine looks like, particularly when he’s writing and researching for a new book What Robert considers to be the single greatest power any human has, and what we can do to strengthen it How having unfettered access to information is actually making us dumber in very important ways and what we can do about it How to fine tune your “bullshit detector” so you’re able to tell the difference between pretenders and performers. (As a bonus, Robert shares a few ways you can improve your bullshitting skills when it becomes necessary) And a lot more. Plus, Robert gives us a sneak peek into his newest project, The Laws of Human Nature, which explores the hidden motivations that drive what we do and say. Welcome to another episode of CTO Studio! Today I’m sitting down to talk with my friend Robert Swisher, CEO of the new mobile app Frendli. Today, you’ll learn from Robert what the differences are between a CEO and a CTO, how to transition between the two, and how to successfully begin a new start-up.  Today you’ll also hear the ups and downs of transitioning from one business model to another, why he wanted to employ different methods for this company than he’d previously used, and much more! In this episode you’ll hear: Why city is the best in the world, according to entrepreneurs? Why did he decide to depart from his first CTO role? How Robert created the idea for Frendli. The differences between technical CTO and a non-technical CTO. Robert’s advice for successfully creating an advisory board. And so much more!  Robert’s experience in the business world began when he was only 19 years old. He originally began and operated a technology consultancy company for small businesses in Colorado and ran that for several years before deciding to move back to his home state of California. Robert’s most recent venture before Frendli was being CTO at Business.com where he served as the CTO for 6 years. Eventually he decided to exit the company after selling it in June 2016. He says the sale of the company took about 3 to 4 months, from the original letter of intent to the final purchase, and was a pleasant experience by all counts. One of the other topics we talked about on this episode of CTO Studio is how Robert created the idea for Frendli, and what he did to ensure his new startup would be as successful as possible. Robert said that he created the idea for Frendli and spoke with several friends to get their reactions and feedback. He was excited when they all gave him positive reviews! It was a dream come true for him - he had always wanted to create a startup as a true founder rather than someone who just came in early to the business. And he had done it with Friendli. I asked him to expand on what Friendli is exactly and how it is different from other apps out there. Robert describes Friendli as a unique mobile app which matches users based on common interests and hobbies. The next step is for companies to market themselves on the app by posting deals for those matched friends, based on their mutual interests. The app is still in progress, the development for Friendli is expected to wrap up in early April 2018, and should launch in late April or early May of the same year. Out of all the advice Robert lends on this episode, one of the most prominent things we discussed was the importance of creating a sold advisory board to help through the process of launching. Robert says this has been key in the development of Friendli. So even though he does not currently have a direct mentor, he has made sure his advisory board is made up of people with different perspectives and ideas so he is getting a host of viewpoints. For example, he has people on his board with whom he has worked in the past. These are people he knows to be dependable and to have experience in this particular field. He also has advisors with an academic perspective on his board. He did this because this is his first experience being a CEO, and he knew he wanted and needed to surround himself with the best group of advisors possible from a variety of walks of life.  Continuing on that same thread, I then asked Robert for his advice on making that transition from his previous roles as CTO to his current role as CEO of Friendli, and what different methods or approaches he wanted to employ within Friendli once he became the CEO. You can hear those recommendations directly from Robert, as well as his most helpful books for startups, when you tune in to this episode of CTO Studio!

You can dance if you want to. And wear a tutu, too! Robert Carter is a dancer with Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, an all-male drag ballet company that pays tribute to – and pokes fun at – the classical Russian stars of dance. The male dancers portray ballerinas (with great names like Ida Nevaseyneva), using their incredible athleticism to dance on pointe and exaggerate traditional choreography for comic effect. Robert was one of four dancers in the company featured in the documentary Rebels on Pointe, a Bobbi Jo Hart film revealing the history of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. Robert Carter’s story runs parallel to that of the fictional Billy Elliot. He grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, in a working-class family. His mother made sure that he and his sisters were exposed to the arts, and Robert was involved in community theatre at a very early age. The man who would become his dance teacher noticed him singing a solo at the Spoleto Festival and approached Robert’s mother to offer the opportunity for ballet lessons. Robert attended his first class when he was seven, and he has been dancing ever since. Navigating the Customer Experience

Robert Ilijason is an IT Consultant specializing in databases and business intelligence, mainly working with automating processes and data flows. He has worked with customers such as Ericsson, TeliaSonera and mainly IKEA. He is also a writer. Since a few months ago, he is also a retailer and he’s opened an unmanned grocery store in the small village of Viken and now expanding in Sweden. How Robert came across our path was, in doing some research for our podcast interviews, we bucked upon this article and these videos that spoke about this gentleman in Sweden who created an automated store where there were no actual employees and all you needed was your smart phone app to basically navigate your entire experience.   Questions Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey Can you share with us a little about the problem that you were experiencing why you created this app? How would you rate customer experience in Sweden, do you find it’s different from other places in the world? How do you stay motivated every day? If another business owner came over to you and said they are looking to do something similar to what you’re doing in your business, creating an app, but are looking more to have an app to complement their existing store with employees, what is some advice you would give them in terms of developing something that would be customer oriented? What is the one online resource, website, tool or app that you absolutely cannot live without in your business? What are some of the books that have had the biggest impact on you? What is one thing in your life right now that you are really excited about – something that you are working on to develop yourself or people? Where can our listeners find your information online? What is one quote or saying that you live by or that inspires you in times of adversity?   Highlights Robert Ilijason stated that he has always been a tech person for all his life; he started out with computers when he was 10 years old. He started to work with it professionally when he was 20 years old and now he is 40 years old and has been with it for 20 years. He has had a lot of different titles, he has been a Web Developer, a Database Administrator, a BI Consultant, which is his current title, but what he’s been doing all these years is solving problems using technology. People go to him with a problem and he uses the correct technology to solve the problem that they have. As an avid problem solver - Robert shared that one day he had his son and he was home alone with him for the first time, he was about 6 months old back then. It was late at night, he was supposed to feed him baby food, his girlfriend had left him a note of what he was supposed to do and he managed to drop the last jar of baby food and it was too late for the stores in Viken which is a small city with about 4000 inhabitants. The stores were closed and he kind of panicked as it was his first time and he didn’t know what to do so he took his son, put him in the car and they drove to the closest city which was Helsingborg and that was a very bad experience because his son (Max) was screaming because he was both hungry and afraid and wondering what was happening and Robert was sweating all over because of the panic he had. During that trip he decided that he doesn’t want to live in a place where he can’t buy stuff all the time but his girlfriend told him that they need to stay in Viken, so he decided that if he can’t move to the store, he has to move the store to him. In Sweden it is very expensive to have personnel and in most countries, so having a 24/7 store in Viken was out of the question, at least if you have your ordinary store. Robert started thinking, what if they just remove the personnel and it proved to be quite simple because the people working in the cash register can be replaced by the customer, it’s not totally without employees because someone needs to fill up the goods and remove the old goods and clean out the store but you don’t need to have someone there all the time. You download the app, you can register online and it takes 15 seconds. You can use the app to enter the store, walk around, you scan what you take and when you’re done, you press the button and after a few weeks you get the invoice. It is a way for him to count the transaction cost because he can add credit cards or different kinds of e-payments they have in Sweden but that cost him a few Swedish quarters which is about 20 or 30 cents per transaction and by bulking up all the purchases the customer does throughout the month, he can count the transaction cost quite a lot. The app was launched in mid January of 2016. Robert stated that most people in Viken are happy that it exists. The biggest problems he has had is not with technology but with his lack of knowledge within retailing, he doesn’t understand that he needs parking spaces and he didn’t have the carts to put goods in, there were a lot of minor things that he missed and the goods on the shelves were the wrong kind but now that it’s turning around by fixing all the problems has they come along and now it’s looking well and he’s trying to expand into more villages in Sweden. Robert stated that customer service is pretty well and he mostly have that experience in many countries in Europe and they are well in the customer experience, in the northern part more so, they are calm people and try to help everyone, it’s a very helpful mentality all over so it’s pretty good. That’s why companies such as IKEA has had such a success all over the world, they figured things out and tried to make things easier for their customers even if it’s their bottom line sometimes. Robert stated that while working with IKEA, he can talk about business intelligence which is not customer service but basically collecting everything that’s happening in the stores. From the stores, from the suppliers, from the trains, boats, trucks to basically optimize the flow of goods to lower the prices to make it more available and cheaper for people, to maintain a good quality while lowering the price for customers. The data is used to provide a better experience. Most companies are using that data, if you are ever asked by a company if you are happy with an experience, you sometimes press a button or you’re answering a survey online, that’s always collected and he recommends that people do it because even if people don’t look at you’re specific answer, they look at it in an aggregate and they will identify problem points and they will be able to fix them if you help them out. If you’re not happy and don’t tell anyone, the problem won’t be fixed and that he sees in his own store because some people are very active in getting back to him and letting him know that “hey, you should really have this product or you should not sell this product and this a problem for whatever reason”, they can help him out to optimize what he has on his shelves. He has the statistics from the sales but they can also tell him “I didn’t buy cheese today because the cheese I want wasn’t there”, he would optimize it in the app so it’s very simple, you can press the button and you can either type or speak to send him information of what problems they’ve had. Robert stated that the app has everything; he tries to push everything in there so it’s easy for them and for him.  If customers have a problem in the store like purchasing something and it spoils after a day and they want to return it, do they communicate that in the app? Robert stated there is a small box in the store where you put stuff that are bad for whatever reason or you just want to return it and it informs him of that in the app. What is the response time for getting back to the customer? Robert stated that there is a call centre so it depends on when, if you do it in the middle of the night, it will take a few hours but during working hours, it’s almost immediate response but they have very few customers so it’s easy to have a high service.   Robert shared that he tries to look at the possibilities and try to be around positive people, he gets support from his family and other entrepreneurs in the area and by talking altogether they can keep each other’s spirit high so when someone is down they can always help them out to make sure they see the possibilities because it is hard to start something new and you don’t know if you’ll succeed and the costs are sometimes much higher than the money coming in. If you just prevail, you’ll most likely succeed. Robert shared that the most important advice is to start on paper and to talk to someone who actually understands user interfaces because one of the biggest challenges that he has seen when he downloads other apps is that they are very cumbersome to use, it’s confusing, they don’t always follow normal practice that most apps use and especially for bigger companies, they execute poorly. Start on paper and talk to someone that understands how the flow in the app works and do all this before you even talk to a technician. Most technicians, they think in a special way and for them things are obvious but not always obvious for the customer and an example is Apple’s Ipad, the first Ipad wasn’t better than the competition, it was worse in many regards but they managed to tell people instead of saying they have 5 gigabits, they could store 5,000 or 1,000 songs and that’s a huge difference because not everyone understands what is a gigabits it. For a technician a gigabit is obvious but for a normal person, it’s not. He sees it a lot where, you’re in the business and you understand the business and you expect everyone to understand what you’re doing but most people don’t, so you really need to start from the beginning and have someone who understands this and be a part of the app development from the very start. Robert stated that if you have a lot of notes on a professional level, Evernote is also something he uses very much. He uses all different types of cloud services like for storage such as Dropbox and OneDrive and Google Drive. Robert shared that there are many books that have had some impact on him but for this particular project, there is none. He has been influenced by a lot of American entrepreneurs and like everyone else, Steve Jobs is a person to look up to, he did a lot of good things and also Richard Branson. He also mentioned that he really appreciates Tony Fadell, he likes people who are simplifying things and if he had one topic in his life, it would be simplification, he wants to automate and simplify things so there is time for other stuff. Robert stated his excitement and focus is the expansion. It is the main part right now but what he’s mostly focusing on right now is Version 2.0, so right now to shop in his store you need to have your mobile app, you need to go into the store with the app, you need to scan the goods, you need to press to pay and the next version, you just have to have the phone in your pocket. You will go to the store, the doors will automatically open, you go in, you take whatever you want and then you just leave, after a few minutes you get a preliminary invoice which you can accept or reject and after 24 hours you get the proper invoice. So basically, you don’t need to touch the phone, it will be much simpler for the people who don’t like to use technology, it might be more simplified for the elderly, it might be that they are just not into tech and they are afraid of his store today because it’s very tech focused, you have to understand technology. Even if the app is simple, there is a barrier but he can remove the barrier. He stated that it is looking promising right now. Robert stated that listeners can find him on: www.narassar.seRobert Ilijason LinkedInRobert Ilijason Twitter Robert stated that one thing he is using from IKEA is a statement that their founder said and that is “Most things remain to be done.” It reminds him that even though he thinks something is as good as it can be, he can make it better and even though sometimes it feels like he’s stuck, there are so many things that can break it free for him. That is one quote that he is trying to think about a lot. What if traditional investment strategy’s were really setup to make the big investors money, yet give you and I as the little guy just enough to stay in the game, but rarely win? Think it’s possible? Instead of playing into speculation, volatility, and uncertainty, there is a better way to create cash flow and passive income sources so that you can set things up to enjoy retirement and get the piece of freedom you deserve. Today’s guest is Robert San Luis. He is an advisor, coach, and best-selling author of “Wealth Without Wall Street: Seven Keys To An Early Retirement.” Robert has spent most of his life trying to learn a better way to invest that provides true time freedom to average people. He’s been an active investment advisor (and gave that side of his business up due to the unethical and unfair way the industry works), a real estate broker and investor, and now he teaches people what’s really going on in the investment world, and how you can create passive streams of income - while creating cash flow at the same time. It’s unique and different, and even Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has taken advantage of this little known strategy. The sad but true reality is that the stock market and the typical investment strategies are stacked against the average person. Robert San Luis has studied the investment industry at length and has discovered proven methods of getting your money OUT of the speculative, risky realm of Wall Street, and into investments that cash flow monthly and provide you the recession proof security you want and deserve.   Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn in this show: [0:31] What to expect in this great episode with Dan’s guest Robert San Luis.
