As a girl in England, Jane Goodall dreamed of traveling to Africa to study animals in the wild. In 1960, that dream brought her to Tanzania, to observe the wild chimpanzees at Gombe Stream Park. As she describes in this episode, other scientists did not believe that a young woman could survive alone in the bush, but Jane Goodall did more than survive. Her work revolutionized the field of primatology. She was the first to document chimpanzees making and using tools, an activity that had been thought exclusively humans. Over the years she also witnessed cooperative hunting and altruism, but also brutality and even warfare among chimps. Her work, the longest continuous field study of any living creature, has given us deep insights into the evolution of our own species. Since the 1980's, she has devoted herself single-mindedly to educating the public worldwide about the connections between animal welfare, the environment, and human progress. Does Forest School support academic achievement? In this episode, I explore the relationship between forest school and academic learning, and why supporting the development of the whole child is a vital foundation for later academic success.I look at:- The difference between forest school learning and classroom academics- How time in nature supports holistic development- Why social and emotional growth is a prerequisite for strong academic outcomes- Why we should be challenging the education-first principles of the school system. Forest school isn't about replacing academic learning — it's about creating the conditions where children are ready to thrive in school and beyond. For educators, parents, and leaders, this perspective helps make sense of how forest school supports achievement in a deeper, more sustainable way.If you're interested in the educational philosophy behind forest school, and how it can transform both children's experiences and outcomes, this video is for you.The Forest School Podcast episode "compliance vs engagement" https://open.spotify.com/episode/7z5yOZD6mKrjsTNktk1TsDThe Bracken Outdoors Podcast is designed for Woodland Leaders from bushcraft instructors to Forest School practitioners, helping you build a life in the great outdoors. On this episode we hear from Delnaz. And at her core she describes herself as someone who is drawn to the idea of creating experiences that people remember. This isalso how she chose hospitality because she wanted to be part od an industry that is about creating things for people that stay with them emotionally, rather than selling a product. In the past five year within the same organisation she has been able to move her role several times. It was not easy finding a role during covid, but what was important to her was to get her footin the door, say yes and then once in get noticed and ask for theopportunities. Even if it is daunting, ask.
During the summer break, the 15-Minute History podcast team are republishing some of their favorite episodes. This episode originally aired on May 5, 2025.Season 9 begins Monday, October 7!___It was still dark. The group of men felt the breeze getting warmer as the eastern horizon began to show signs of light. One of the men, tall with no expression, watched as final preparations were made to a large object in front of the group. The others saw the anxiety in his face in a way that only those had had been around him could discern. The man walked forward, spoke with some of the technicians, and watched them haul it away. It was going to a tower, visible in the distance. Conversations around him continued, but only because it seemed like they had to. Somehow, the silence would have been louder. Not long after, notifications came from the tower; an all clear was given. At 5:29 a.m., a flash of light that was so brilliant it could be seen from 200 miles away blossomed in the desert. The mushroom cloud rose 40,000 feet into the air, and the shock wave was felt 100 miles from ground zero. The man who all that morning had worn no expression, would later recall remembering a Hindu scripture in that moment: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."Another man who witnessed the test described the overwhelming impression it left: "A new thing had just been born; a new control; a new understanding of man, which man had acquired over nature." Another observer said, "The lighting effects beggared description. The whole country was lighted by a searing light with the intensity many times that of the midday sun."Humanity had crossed a threshold.___Join us as we show you the Manhattan Project, the reason behind the development of nuclear weapons, and the ethical implications of such an invention.

As co-founder of Ready Set Recover, and former senior executive at ESPN and Audacy, she intimately understands the toll of overachievement—and the liberation that comes from letting go. Campbell holds an MBA from NYU, a BA from the University of Wisconsin, and after nearly 30 years in NYC now lives in the Berkshires with her husband, children and their dog, Tobin. Heather A. Campbell's New Book, Good Is Amazing, challenges the Culture of Overachievement and Champions the Power of Good. What if striving to be “the best” is what's actually holding us back? In a world obsessed with unicorns, GOATs, and relentless self-improvement, Heather A. Campbell delivers a refreshing—and bold—reframe: good is not just enough. Good is amazing. The relatable, hilarious, and heartfelt moments from her life—like when her mom begged her to become President of the United States, or when an ESPN executive casually told her to “just make the book a New York Times bestseller,” anchor a deeper message: the constant pressure to aim higher, do the most, and be the best is exhausting—and it's not working. With wit, warmth, and wisdom, Campbell invites readers to consider a radical idea: What if stopping the chase for perfection and instead embracing good—the joy, simplicity, and genuine satisfaction it brings—is the real secret to success? Each chapter blends real talk, personal insight, and simple, actionable steps to help readers slow down, breathe, and reconnect with what really matters. Parents, professionals, students, caregivers, entrepreneurs—anyone burdened by the relentless pursuit of perfection—will find powerful inspiration here. The Ecclesiastes writer says, “I have sought to construct meaning in life.” He takes the view of a practical secularist—that we don't know for sure if there's a God, and that this life is all there is. And then he asks, “If this life is all there is, does that make life meaningless?” He tells us in Ecclesiastes that he tried to construct meaning by being a cause-based person who fought injustice. He tried to construct meaning by seeking pleasure and beauty. And next, he tries a work-based life, making career and achievement the organizing principle of life. In exploring a work-based life, he finds three things: 1) a life of work is not worth it, 2) why it's not worth it, 3) what is worth it. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 27, 1998. Series: When All You've Ever Wanted Isn't Enough. Scripture: Ecclesiastes 2:17–26, 4:4–8. What if the key to thriving isn't managing your circumstances perfectly—but rooting yourself in the connections that matter most? In this heartfelt conversation, Michael and Megan talk with Elizabeth Oldfield, author of Fully Alive, about reclaiming depth, community, and soul-level steadiness in a culture addicted to speed and distraction. Elizabeth draws on ancient wisdom, modern insight, and her own experience living in intentional community to offer a hopeful path forward.Memorable Quotes“You need to put your roots down deep into love and work out how to find some steadiness.”“When we are honest about our full humanity, we give other people permission to do that, and that's a necessary starting point for actually growing up our souls rather than pretending that we all know what we're doing and we're holding it all together.”“Where we put our attention is essentially who we become.”“I have this sense that fully aliveness is in connection, deep connection, horizontally and vertically.”“Hurrying and destruction are not how we flourish, and we're constantly being encouraged to do those things. So we need to provide some counter pressure towards slowness and steadiness and presence.”Key TakeawaysConnection Is the Core of Flourishing. Relationships—messy, costly, inconvenient—are where we become more fully human.Attention Shapes Who You Become. Distraction isn't just a nuisance; it's a soul-shaping force. Guard your focus.Structure Time Around Your Values. A “rule of life” puts what matters most in place first, so the rest fits around it.Commitment Fuels Depth. What would it feel like to finally shed those expectations and reclaim your true self? This transformative episode dives deep into the silent crisis facing modern men: the disconnect between who we truly are and who we've been told to be. Through powerful insights and vulnerable storytelling, we explore how the pressure to "man up," provide, and remain stoic creates an exhausting performance that leads to burnout, anxiety, and fractured relationships. We challenge the dangerous assumption that achievement equals identity, revealing how society rewards men primarily for productivity rather than authentic presence. When your sense of self is built entirely on what you do rather than who you are, what happens when circumstances change? The answer often involves existential crisis and profound loss of direction. The journey toward authenticity isn't about rebellion—it's about reclaiming oneself. Through Mark's powerful story of transformation, we witness how one executive stopped pretending and started living in alignment with his values, dramatically improving his marriage, leadership, and sense of self. This isn't about abandoning responsibility; it's about redefining it on your own terms.Ready to break free from the prison of others' expectations? We offer five practical strategies to begin living authentically today: taking an identity inventory, practicing rather than performing, embracing discomfort as growth, finding truth-tellers, and auditing the "shoulds" that unconsciously run your life.Take the first step toward becoming unapologetically you. On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with Jerry Henderson—Master Certified Coach, author, speaker, and host of the Permission to Love podcast—to unpack how shame quietly fuels burnout, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome. Jerry shares the inner work that moved him from achievement-as-proof to achievement-as-expression, and explains why self-acceptance increases sustainable performance without the self-punishment loop. If you lead, build, or strive—and feel like it never feels like “enough”—this conversation gives you a practical path to healthy high achievement rooted in identity, self-compassion, and aligned ambition. About the guest : Jerry Henderson is a Master Certified Coach, author, speaker, and creator of the Personal Mastery Framework. He's raised $1B+ in philanthropy and blends psychology, coaching, and trauma-informed practices to help high achievers transform shame-driven success into fulfillment, resilience, and impact. He hosts the Permission to Love podcast. Key takeaways: Shame vs. guilt: Guilt = “I did something wrong.” Shame = “I am something wrong.” Shame often drives overwork, perfectionism, and burnout. Achievement isn't the enemy: High achievement can be healthy; it turns harmful when used to outrun not-enoughness. The inside job: Chasing external approval rarely creates peace. The work is self-acceptance first, then achievement as expression—not proof. Energy shift: Moving from self-criticism to self-compassion changes the fuel source—less grind, more clarity and consistency. Not complacency: Acceptance doesn't mean settling. It means you challenge yourself from care, not fear. Identity > outcomes: Know who you are without your wins. Let wins amplify who you are, not define it. Spot the signs: When “5 o'clock comes sooner,” relationships strain, or health dips, achievement may be shame-driven. Practical start: Notice the inner critic story; replace it with one small act of self-acceptance today. Leader note: Self-berating “bossing” demotivates. Self-compassion sustains performance and protects well-being.
