We've never had more access to information or more tools to make work faster and easier. But according to Nicholas Carr, author of The Shallows and Superbloom, speed and efficiency come with trade-offs we rarely stop to examine. In this episode, Michael and Megan talk with Carr about the paradox of modern productivity: the very systems that help us scale our work can fragment our attention and erode the depth that makes that work meaningful. If you've felt stretched thin or subtly less present than you want to be, this conversation will help you re-evaluate your technology—and the life you're building with it.Memorable Quotes“Many people have this sense that as everything speeds up, we seem to be able to do more. But actually our attention gets fragmented and we're not thinking as straight as we used to…The basic mistake at a personal level is the assumption that human attention, human thought, human communication always gets better as it gets more efficient.”“At a certain point, we simply overload our natural mental and psychological capacity to communicate, to process information, to make coherent thoughts. And at that point, a reversal takes place in faster communication: faster flow of information actually undermines understanding, undermines productivity, and in the worst case scenario, can start undermining relationships as well.”“As we use the tools, they also shape us. And I think that's particularly true of information technologies, communication technologies, media technologies.”“One of the big problems is that [social media platforms] take all friction out of socializing. You think, ‘Oh, we don't want friction.' But actually, it's… making an effort, having to do some work, maybe even having to pay a little money for a stamp to put on an envelope—all of these things deepen our connection to what we're doing. Getting rid of all the friction makes everything very fast, but it also makes everything superficial.”“We're encouraged to take the path of least resistance all the time. And if people can just step back and say, ‘When is efficiency good? When is getting something done as quickly as possible the best way to accomplish it? And when is the product going to be better if I actually put more effort into it, if I work at it?'”“The way we master a skill, any skill, is by actually practicing it. Getting in there, coming up against friction, coming up against barriers and overcoming them. That's the only way to raise your level of mastery or expertise… If you just go the path of least resistance at the very beginning, then you never get that deep learning and you never get the joy of becoming talented.”“One of the dangers of this screen-based life that we haven't talked about is that it steals from us certain levels of sensory engagement with the world… there's a lot of joy in connecting to the world with all our senses that, if we constantly have this little rectangle of glass in front of us, we're losing.”Key TakeawaysFaster Isn't Always Better. At a certain point, efficiency overloads our cognitive and emotional capacity. More communication can undermine understanding, productivity, and even relationships.Tools Shape Their Users. We create technology, but over time, it reshapes how we think, communicate, and experience the world. Texting, scrolling, and AI-assisted writing subtly influence depth and nuance.Friction Fuels Mastery. Deep learning requires struggle. When we automate the hard parts—like reading closely, writing clearly, thinking critically—we sacrifice growth for convenience.AI Is a Fork in the Road. Used wisely, AI can sharpen ideas and support thinking. Used carelessly, it can replace the very mental practices that build wisdom and skill.Replacement Beats Removal. Simply cutting back on technology often leaves a vacuum. Replacing screen time with embodied, social, or sensory-rich experiences creates lasting change.Local Community Is a Powerful Antidote. Book clubs, gardening groups, shared meals and other face-to-face interactions restore depth in ways screens cannot replicate.Resources“Live a Quiet Life and Work with Your Hands” (Substack Article)Superbloom by Nicholas CarrThe Shallows by Nicholas Carrnicholascarr.comWatch on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/9afbaUcmvYQThis episode was produced by Sarah Vorhees Wendel of VW Sound
What if the very beliefs driving your success are also the ones quietly burning you out? In this episode of The Greatness Machine, host Darius Mirshahzadeh sits down with neuroscientist and founder of Dr. Rewire, Dr. Alok Trivedi, for a powerful conversation on how the brain, beliefs, and nervous system truly shape success and fulfillment. Dr. Alok shares his origin story, the breakdown that sparked his breakthrough, and how decoding the “anatomy of belief” allowed him to rewire his life and business. Together, they explore why traditional mindset work often falls short, why the brain is wired for protection rather than happiness, and why integration, not hustle, is the real path to sustainable performance. The conversation dives into Dr. Alok's Four Brains framework, the dopamine-driven highs and lows of achievement, and how entrepreneurs can align with their true design to reduce burnout, anxiety, and self-sabotage. In this episode, Darius and Dr. Alok will discuss: (00:00) Introduction to Dr. Alok Trivedi (02:12) Dr. Alok's Origin Story and Mission (05:20) The Shift from Personal Development to Neuroscience (07:25) Understanding the Connection Between Mind and Body (12:26) The Role of Beliefs in Shaping Reality (16:26) The Importance of Why and Why Not (19:42) Aligning Ego and Soul for Success (24:24) The Four Brains Model of Leadership (29:41) Bridging the Gap to Ideal Profiles (33:18) Integrating Life for Authenticity (38:52) The Cycle of Highs and Lows in Achievement (43:36) Final Thoughts and Greatness Question Dr. Alok Trivedi, widely known as Dr. Rewire, is a neuroscientist and human performance expert dedicated to transforming lives through brain-based optimization. 6. Cline explores the decline of the Minoans on Crete and the Mycenaeanson mainland Greece. Both civilizations are categorized as failures that were internally fragile despite impressive architectural achievements like the Lion Gate. Overextension through massive construction projects and internal uprisings during periods of drought likely contributed to their demise. By the 11th century BC, these societies had vanished, though some cultural elements persisted through a permeable membrane into the Iron Age. Cline also discusses how Homer's epics, written centuries later, cautiously reflect this transition from the Bronze Age "Wanax" kings to the Iron Age "Basileus" leaders. (6)

What if a horror film could teach us something about faith? In Sinners, music becomes a spiritual force that’s powerful enough to bring people together, challenge oppression, and even pierce the veil between life and death. In this episode of Reel Theology: Where Film Meets Faith, Rev. Brittany and Rev. Trudy explore the film Sinners and uncover the powerful spiritual questions hidden beneath its supernatural story. It’s a haunting movie that weaves together music, history, theology, and horror into an unforgettable masterpiece. Set in 1930s Mississippi, the film navigates faith, family expectations, and the cultural power of music in a deeply segregated society. What begins as a story about a juke joint and blues music soon unfolds into a layered reflection on temptation, survival, oppression, and spiritual power. It’s a vampire film, but it’s also about so much more: ancestral memory, cultural resilience, and the sacred power of music. In this conversation, the female pastors explore themes like: The relationship between music and spirituality Why religious institutions sometimes fear artistic expression African American spiritual traditions and Hoodoo The history of Black music as resistance and survival Theological ideas like temptation, evil, and process theology How oppression shapes community, identity, and belonging Ultimately, the film points toward a powerful truth echoed in Christian faith: Even in the presence of evil, racism, and death — nothing can separate us from the love of God. Watch the conversation and join us as we ask: What can a supernatural film teach us about faith? Want to connect with others about this discussion? Join our Patreon community online! Sinners has been nominated for a record-breaking 16 Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screen Play, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Achievement in Casting Sinners also received nominations for: BAFTA Awards, Critics’ Choice Movies Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Grammy Awards, and SAG Awards. A Note About Awards: While widely praised by critics for its storytelling, cinematography, and cultural depth, Sinners has also sparked conversation about which films receive major awards recognition and why.
The Oscars are the Super Bowl of movies. We're not talking about the prestige of winning, although that certainly lines up. We're talking about how the wider world swoops in once a year to make predictions, rubberneck at the spectacle of it all and maybe even watch the actual event itself.Obviously, Dori and Kpolly are not “the wider world.” They're unpretentious, welcoming, discerning film lovers who want everyone to join them in the fun of cinema (and in the theater itself, because watching movies in theaters is the best). So, with the Academy Awards coming up this Sunday and everyone in full-tilt prediction mode, our duo wanted to jump on board and offer a few picks of their own. This isn't an exhaustive list. While Dori and Kpolly are as excited as anyone about discovering who will win for “Achievement in Production Design,” they stick to the big categories in this episode. Yes, most of them revolve around the showdown between One Batter After Another and Sinners. But does F1 make an appearance? You bet it does!

In this episode, we tackle one of the hardest truths in entrepreneurship—knowing when a business isn't ready to stand on its own. Too many people pour thousands of dollars, years of time, and even money from family into ventures that simply aren't producing enough income to survive. At some point, determination can turn into financial damage. We discuss how to recognize when it's time to shift gears, get a steady job to stabilize your finances, and move the dream into a side hustle instead of letting it destroy your bank account and relationships. Stepping back from a struggling business isn't giving up—it's making a strategic decision to protect your future while continuing to build your vision the smart way.Opening QuestionsAt what point does a business stop being a “startup phase” and start becoming financial self-destruction?How do you know the difference between “pushing through hard times” and “refusing to accept reality”?Is it possible that the smartest business decision you can make is getting a full-time job?Why do so many entrepreneurs treat the idea of getting a job like it's failure? Is pride the biggest reason people keep pouring money into a dying business?Reality Check QuestionsIf your business hasn't paid you in a year, is it really a business or just an expensive hobby? How many months of losses should someone realistically tolerate before reassessing? If your spouse or family is financially supporting your “business,” are you really running a business? When you start borrowing money from family to keep a business alive, has it already crossed the line?Is there a point where continuing a failing business becomes irresponsible to your family?Ego vs RealityWhy do entrepreneurs sometimes confuse stubbornness with determination? Is quitting the wrong business actually a smart entrepreneurial move? How much of entrepreneurship is about knowing when to pivot or pause?Do social media success stories make people feel like they must grind forever even when it's not working? The Side Hustle StrategyWhy is turning a struggling business into a side hustle often the smartest move? What are the advantages of building a business while working a stable job?How does having steady income actually help a business grow smarter? Why do many successful businesses start as side hustles rather than full-time ventures? Is it better to grow slowly with stability rather than forcing growth with debt?Financial ResponsibilityWhat financial signals tell you it's time to stop treating something like a full-time business?Should every entrepreneur set a financial “kill switch” before starting a business? How much savings should someone realistically have before trying to go full-time with a startup? Is taking money from family to support a failing business ever justified? What's the long-term damage to relationships when businesses collapse after family investments?Hard Truths SegmentIs it possible that some ideas are just not viable businesses? How do you know when the market has spoken? What's the difference between “this needs more time” and “this will never work”?Why is it sometimes smarter to pause a business than destroy your finances trying to save it?Encouragement SegmentDoes moving a business to a side hustle mean the dream is over? Can getting a stable job actually accelerate your future success? Why is patience often the missing ingredient in entrepreneurship? Is the real entrepreneurial skill knowing when to adapt instead of when to grind harder?Powerful Closing Question “Is the goal to prove you're an entrepreneur, or to actually build something sustainable?” Strong Closing Statement You Could Use “A real entrepreneur isn't someone who refuses to quit. A real entrepreneur is someone who refuses to destroy their future chasing something that isn't ready yet.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/master-the-nec-podcast--1083733/support.Struggling with the National Electrical Code? In this episode, Emily sits down with education leader, school founder, and author Chris Balme to completely reframe how we view the middle school years. Rather than treating early adolescence as a miserable phase to simply muddle through, it's a period of profound neurological transformation and peak human potential. Redesigning educational environments for neurodivergent students, by prioritizing smaller, consistent advisory cohorts and scaffolding executive function, creates a safer, more engaging culture for everyone. Other topics include the activation of the "social brain," why a baseline of belonging must be established before academic achievement can occur, and how traditional middle school structures often inadvertently fight against a student's natural developmental drives. TAKEAWAYS Middle school is a period of rapid cognitive and social development that requires specific developmental maps, not lowered expectations. A balanced and healthy social brain provides a secure sense of belonging, which is a biological imperative. Structuring middle schools to support neurodivergent learners enhances psychological safety and improves the educational baseline for the entire student body. Middle schoolers possess a highly attuned radar for authenticity and are skeptical of artificial relevance, like busywork. Most of us have an unspoken rule set for modern relationships: Avoid the landmines. But according to Jacob Mchangama, that kind of fear-based self-censorship leads to disconnection. If you can't be forthright about what matters with the people you share life with, you may stay civil, but you won't stay close. In this episode, Michael and Megan sit down with Jacob Mchangama—founder and executive director of the Future of Free Speech at Vanderbilt University—to explore what it looks like to disagree without dehumanizing. They talk about why today's conversations feel existential, how identity gets tangled with beliefs, and how to build habits that keep you grounded when your nervous system wants to go to war.Memorable Quotes“It is much better to confront those differences head-on rather than try to hide them under this veneer of mutual tolerance and respect—which really is not based on mutual tolerance and respect if you can't have those difficult conversations that divide people.”“When you self-censor about issues that are deeply meaningful to you, issues that affect society as a whole, when you think that you cannot speak out on an issue where you think someone that you're close to is wrong… it breeds loneliness. And then if you can only be very forthright about certain issues with a group of people who are completely like-minded, then that might also be self-radicalizing, in a way.”“Approach discussions on social media, for instance, with a mindset of saying, ‘I'm not going into this debate or discussion to win. I'm going into this discussion because I'm passionate about this issue, but I might be wrong.'”“If you have a conversation with someone and you know that you have very different positions on a given topic, you have an opportunity to learn something. Even if that person is not able to convince you about that position, they might have points that make you understand your own position better, or maybe you tweak your own position. Even if you tweak it 5%, that's quite valuable, right?”“If you allow yourself to be in the mindset, again, as I said before of ‘I'm not entering this discussion in order to win. I'm entering this discussion because it's a topic that I'm passionate about. I have certain beliefs, but I am willing to change my mind. I am very cognizant about the fact that I am not omniscient. I am a human being with very limited knowledge.' Just about every person that you meet will have some kind of experience, some kind of knowledge that you don't have, if you are willing to tap into that.”“[When] our identity is wrapped up in that to the point that we can never say we're wrong or we can never say that we made a mistake, that's a really dangerous place, because then you get into this ideological sunk cost fallacy situation where like you can't ever backtrack or change or evolve or grow. And hopefully, in relationships, we are able to evolve and grow. That's one of the gifts of relationships.”Key TakeawaysNot All Self-Censorship Is Bad. Filtering thoughtless comments is basic social wisdom. Silence driven by fear around meaningful issues is what erodes connection.Curiosity Disarms Conflict. Enter hard conversations with a posture of humility: I care about this—and I could be wrong. When you aspire to learn, you probably will.Aim for Understanding, Not Conversion. Even if no one changes their mind, you can refine your thinking and better understand the human story behind the opposing view.Deescalation Is a Skill. If emotions get the better of you, apologizing can reset the tone and invite good faith back into the room.Boundaries Aren't Censorship. If someone consistently denigrates you or refuses meaningful parameters, disengaging is healthy—not a failure.Leaders Set the Temperature. Trust grows when people can challenge ideas (even leadership decisions) without fear of punishment or shame.ResourcesFree Speech by Jacob MchanamaJacob Mchangama's SubstackWatch on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/lKzhW8tjL3YThis episode was produced by Sarah Vorhees Wendel of VW Sound

Ask Me How I Know: Multifamily Investor Stories of Struggle to Success
If you struggle to rest, you are not lazy. And you are not bad at slowing down. When your nervous system resists rest, it is often responding to something older than your calendar. Many driven, responsible adults live in low-grade urgency. Not because they love hustle, but because their body learned early that motion meant safety. Achievement meant connection. Stabilizing the room meant belonging. So when things get quiet, the body does not interpret that as peace. It interprets it as unfamiliar. This episode explores: • why high performers feel restless in stillness • how predictive processing reinforces familiar reward loops • why responsibility fuses with identity • how “being the steady one” becomes a nervous system strategy • the grief that surfaces when intensity becomes normalWe are not teaching neuroscience. We are illuminating lived experience.Your brain repeats what reduces uncertainty. If competence calmed tension, your system stored it. If achievement strengthened attachment, your system reinforced it.Over time, adrenaline can feel like clarity. Urgency can feel like maturity. Rest can feel exposed. This is not traditional burnout. It is identity drift layered with nervous system conditioning.Identity-Level Recalibration is not another productivity tactic. It is root-level recalibration that makes every other tool effective. We begin with the who, not the how. Identity precedes behavior.Reclamation does not mean becoming less driven. It means separating commitment from consumption. You can remain sharp without staying strung tight. You can lead without living in low-grade adrenaline. You can care deeply without being consumed.Identity safety feels like breath. Not adrenaline.Like silence that does not accuse you.Like performance flowing from steadiness instead of panic. This is orientation before resolution.Recognition before force.Companionship instead of correction.Today's Micro Recalibration:When rest feels uncomfortable, place a hand on your chest and quietly say, “My body learned that motion meant safety. It is okay that this feels unfamiliar.” Then take one slower breath than usual. Not to fix anything.Just to introduce your system to a new option.Explore Identity-Level Recalibration → Schedule a conversation with Julie to see if The Recalibration is a fit for you → Learn about The Recalibration Cohort→ Join the next Friday Recalibration Live experience → Take your listening deeper! This The Standard Within episode is a short-form reflection on personal accountability, discipline, and self-leadership for people navigating pressure, responsibility, and growth. In this episode, we focus on: taking credit for your drive and accomplishmentsYou ever notice how after you accomplish something meaningful, it almost disappears the moment it's finished? You reach the standard you set. You finish the project. You survive the hard part. You become the person you said you were going to become. And then your mind immediately moves the goalpost. It raises the bar. It asks what's next before it ever acknowledges what just happened. At first, that can feel like drive. It can feel like discipline and commitment. But when you live in a permanent state of pursuit, always moving forward without ever registering the progress you've made, something subtle begins to change. Progress starts to feel empty because you never allow yourself to recognize that you've grown. This episode explores what happens when you never close the psychological loop on your accomplishments. When your mind stays in pursuit mode, your nervous system rarely resets. Even when things are going well, it can feel like you're behind, like there's always something unfinished pulling at your attention.Over time, that constant motion can create emotional distance from your own progress. Achievements become mile markers instead of meaningful moments. External recognition fades quickly. Discipline begins to feel more like pressure than ownership. But recognizing what you've done doesn't weaken your standards. It strengthens them.Because acknowledging progress allows your mind to register that something meaningful happened. It reconnects you with the person who did the work and reminds you that the version of yourself you're striving to become may already be closer than you think.CONNECT WITH THE PODCAST:IG: https://www.instagram.com/paulpantani/IG: https://www.instagram.com/thestandardwithinpodcast/QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:thestandardwithinpodcast@gmail.com

She didn't stay because she was weak. She stayed because leaving felt like throwing away everything her family sacrificed to give her. Alenka Kyslik is the daughter of Soviet immigrants who fled in the middle of the night for a better life. That story became her nervous system's operating code. Opportunity meant safety. Achievement meant survival. And saying no to either felt like a betrayal of everything they crossed an ocean to build. So she stayed. Through the body disconnection. Through the out-of-body driving moments. Through the week she couldn't get off the floor. Through the boss who told her, "I could give you a green card, but I know you'll leave." She stayed, because her nervous system didn't know there was another option. This isn't a burnout story. It's a story about the belief underneath the burnout. And what becomes possible when you finally see it for what it is. Here's what Lenka's story quietly teaches you about your own:

Building the Business You Really Want: Strategic Alignment and Intentional Success with Gwen BortnerIn a recent episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur Podcast, host Josh Elledge sat down with Gwen Bortner, the founder of Everyday Effectiveness, to explore the vital intersection of business strategy and personal fulfillment. With a career spanning over four decades and 47 different industries, Gwen brings a master-level perspective to organizational design and leadership accountability. Their conversation serves as a roadmap for entrepreneurs—particularly women leaders—who find themselves achieving traditional milestones of "success" yet feeling disconnected from the joy and purpose that originally sparked their journey. Gwen shares how to dismantle the "shoulds" of the business world to remodel a venture that is both highly effective and deeply aligned with the owner's authentic vision.Reclaiming the Vision: Remodeling Your Business for Long-Term SustainabilityThe transition from a high-growth startup to a sustainable, fulfilling enterprise requires a radical shift in how a leader defines success. Gwen explains that many founders fall into the trap of chasing external benchmarks—revenue targets, headcount, or market status—that don't actually resonate with their personal values. This misalignment often leads to a persistent dread of the workweek and a sense of chronic exhaustion, even when the balance sheet looks healthy. To correct this, business owners must engage in a process of "intentional remodeling," auditing every aspect of their operations to ensure the business is serving the life they want to live, rather than the other way around.A common hurdle for high-achievers is the tendency to move the goalposts the moment a victory is achieved, which effectively eliminates the opportunity for reflection and celebration. Gwen emphasizes that celebrating wins is not just about a temporary "victory lap"; it is a strategic tool for identifying what is actually working within the business. By conducting a "success audit," entrepreneurs can isolate the specific behaviors and strategies that led to a positive outcome, allowing them to replicate those results with less friction in the future. Without this pause to acknowledge progress, leaders risk burning out on a treadmill of endless tasks that offer no emotional return on investment.Strategic advisory plays a crucial role in this process, acting as a mirror for the "hard questions" that entrepreneurs often avoid. Gwen describes her role as a strategic accountability partner who helps CEOs cut through the noise of daily operations to confront uncomfortable truths about their direction. This level of intentionality ensures that any pivot or change in the business model is a conscious choice based on long-term goals rather than a reactive response to temporary distractions. By building a culture of strategic questioning and embracing mindfulness—even through creative hobbies that engage the brain in new ways—leaders can maintain the clarity needed to build a legacy that is as sustainable as it is profitable.About Gwen BortnerGwen Bortner is the Owner, Consultant, and Speaker behind Everyday Effectiveness. With more than 40 years of experience helping organizations scale and align, Gwen specializes in acting as an "advisory board of one" for women CEOs and founders. She is known for her holistic approach to business, combining high-level strategic thinking with a deep focus on personal accountability and fulfillment.About Everyday EffectivenessEveryday Effectiveness is a strategic consultancy that helps business owners move from feeling overwhelmed to achieving intentional, effective growth. The company provides strategic advisory services, accountability coaching, and resources designed to help entrepreneurs remodel their businesses for better alignment, sustainability, and joy.Links Mentioned in This EpisodeEveryday Effectiveness Official WebsiteGwen Bortner on LinkedInKey Episode HighlightsDefining Authentic Success: Why entrepreneurs must stop chasing industry "shoulds" and create their own metrics for a fulfilling life and business. The Warning Signs of Misalignment: How to recognize when your business model is no longer serving your personal well-being or long-term vision. The Strategic Value of Hobbies: Why engaging in repetitive, mindful activities like quilting can actually sharpen a leader's problem-solving faculties.Success Auditing: The importance of pausing to celebrate wins and analyzing what worked to build reproducible momentum. The Power of the "Hard Question": How having an external advisory perspective can help you avoid "shiny object syndrome" and stay committed to your true goals.ConclusionThis conversation with Gwen Bortner underscores that the ultimate goal of entrepreneurship should be freedom and fulfillment, not just financial gain. By prioritizing strategic alignment and having the courage to ask difficult questions, you can remodel your path to create a business that truly serves you.More from The Thoughtful Entrepreneur
