The coaches of Team Next Level gather to discuss all the things to help the multi sport athlete improve in all aspects of their fitness. From training and Race planning to nutrition and gaining that mental edge. Oh yeah, we try and keep it fun and light hearted as well.
We recorded this episode a while ago, but in it we discuss our opinions on the current use of performance enhancing drugs in sport. We keep things light hearted as we dive into this complex and thought provoking topic.
Does it seem like you can never unlock that run potential during a triathlon? You're a stud during your workouts, but it always falls apart on race day? Listen to the coaches discuss what might be the thing holding you back, and give ideas on how to fix it. Spoiler alert, it isn't running more, or running harder.
We know it's been a while, but 2024 has been a crazy year for Team Next Level. We want you to know that we are back, and will be pushing out content more regularly in 2025. Join us for a look back on what's happened this past season through some ups and downs. We talk about all that we've learned and how we plan to apply it to our future plans.
The coaches tackle what most people would argue is the most challenging discipline to get better at. Especially if you are learning to swim as an adult. We discuss what tips and tricks helped us out when getting into the water and learning to swim. We then take a deep dive (see what I did there) into things you can do to improve your swim.
In part 2 of our series on planning out your season we discuss what the final weeks of training should look like and how to adjust for different races. We also dive into other periodization models such as block and reverse periodization. It's November, and here in the Northern Hemisphere that means cold weather and time to recover from the season. What better time than now to think about next season, your races, and how to best plan for them. We discuss how to plan out that big season picture (Macrocycle) and then begin to put the pieces in place. In part one, we discuss the general idea of periodization and the first few parts of your season, including recovery, base, and build.
The crew sits down for our one year anniversary episode. Who would have thought we'd have stuck with this for one year and 44 episodes. Today is a long one, so buckle up. We talk all things 70.3 North Carolina, from the drive down to the dinner afterwards. We also hit on the race in the middle also. We end the show getting a little introspective on how the last year has gone, how we've changed, how we've grown, and the things we are looking forward to moving forward. It's been an awesome year, and if you've been with us since the beginning, we genuinely appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to listen. We are a week out from our last race of the year. We've been building towards this as our "A" race all season and we are beyond pumped to share an overview of the race, our goals and expectations. Come along as Coach James divulges the inner workings of his modeling software that allow him to predict our performance down to the second. If anyone out there is doing this race, either this year or in the future, we also discuss how to navigate a split transition, point to point race and the details that will make race day less stressful. Coach James walks us through his epic experience at Jones Beach 70.3. An inaugural event with what was supposed to be close to 4,000 competitors and what ended up having pretty crazy weather conditions. After hearing his experience we dive into how to best prepare for the worst that mother nature might throw at you. We can't change the weather, but we can prepare for it. From what to wear, to how it might change pacing or fueling strategies, we try to cover it all. Listen along so that you can be ready for that next race if the weather doesn't decide to cooperate.
The coaches sit down for our first interview in a while. We welcome Matt Schuster into the studio tonight. Matt has a great story that really embodies the Triathlon spirit. As a guy working a corporate gig in marketing, he just wasn't happy. Around the same time he discovers a newfound love for endurance sports and over the last three years he's worked to turn his love of sport into a career. Listen in as we discuss the origins of his Agegrouper project along with his impressive individual race results. First up is a recap of the DQ Pine Barrens Triathlon we finished this past weekend. Team Next Level brought home a bunch of hardware. Then in part two, as sort of a follow up to our last episode we talk about what kind of different race character are you? Are you "The Dude" or "The Terminator" or maybe one of the other ones we talk about? Do you agree with our self assessment of who we are as racers? And please make it to the end listen to poor Koichi's experience with his torpedo water bottle :) Team Next Level - http://www.goteamnltri.com Insta- https://www.instagram.com/team_next_level_tri/ Quad Pod - https://www.instagram.com/next_level_quad_pod/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnajZtFBm-TmHpaA7_GrKEg PowerBar: https://sport.powerbar.com/
This week the crew sits down and discusses some of the different types of folks we encounter in this wild world of triathlon. Are you a hippie? a data dork? The team takes on some of the biggest news stories in triathlon from the past week or so. From the unfortunate deaths at Ironman Ireland, contaminated waters of Singapore and the Seine, to Lionel's questionable DQ at 70.3 world championships in Finland. Come along for the ride as we add our own takes to these news stories.
The coaches are joined by our recurring co-host Yvonne. Today we discuss all of the things you need to think about when it comes to setting up your race plan. We talk about setting up your plan to start and then go over all the things that might go wrong and how to adjust that plan. The word of the day is: Reconnaissance
The coaches take a few minutes to check in and discuss their season so far and how to maintain your motivation along with tips on how to assess how things are going so far and how to know if your plan needs modifying. Then we dive into some hard hitting questions from our loyal fans. Are racing categories needed? How can we make triathlon even more challenging? Are coaches on their way out to make room for AI?
In what may be an ongoing series, the coaches discuss how to not suck. This time with regards specifically to cycling. We go over what makes one a good or competent cyclist and how to get to that point if you're not there already. Is FTP the best metric to "measure" yourself against others? How to improve your bike handling techniques, or how to know when and how to shift? All this and more. Give it a listen and let us know what you think. The summer has arrived with a bang here in NJ. Coach Greg and Coach Marilyn raced a brutal hot and humid race this past weekend. We suffered, but learned a lot from it. We discuss our race and then dive into the science behind training in the heat. What happens to your body and performance, how you can mitigate the effects to some extent, and what you can do to adapt as much as possible so the heat doesn't stop you from performing at your best. Coach Marilyn had a big upset when 70.3 Mont Tremblant was cancelled while she waited on the beach for the race to start. Air quality issues were to blame and it was probably the correct call to cancel the race but it still sucks. Listen along as we discuss her experience, how to overcome obstacles and then discuss how to deal with training in less than great air quality situations. We also spend some time discussing how to get the most from your open water swim sessions. With our own sprint triathlon coming up shortly, the coaches sit down to discuss the key aspects to getting your training right whether it's your first triathlon, or just a fun race you want to do well in. We discuss what the training should look like, how it might differ from other distance races and also how to prep for the race itself. Coach James shares his lessons learned from his most recent sprint tri at the NJ state triathlon. Tonight we are joined by our teammate Yvonne Losino, who helps us dive into a wide ranging discussion that touches on a lot of different ideas, but circles around the idea of keeping the integrity of your training and workouts. From how to modify things when you aren't feeling it, or what to do when sick and injured. Listen along to learn how to roll with the punches and keep things moving in the right direction. Today the coaches take a different approach to discussing training. We work on a little mental exercise to help you figure out ways to stop getting bogged down in data. From trying to unplug and focus on your inner feelings to how to get into a flow state. Is your data holding you back from reaching your true potential? We go through all these things and more. Listen along and leave a comment on your favorite ways to unplug. And a special segment at the end for those of you who want to laugh. Today the coaches sit down and discuss a topic that might not get as much press as it should, but might just be the key to unlocking your next great race result. We dig into the mental side of things and talk about some of the ideas we use to help us get through a tough block of training, or power through those really hard workouts with things like mantras and visualization. We talk about some of our most difficult moments in races and different tactics we used to get through them and come out stronger on the other side. What's working and what still needs to be fine tuned. We discuss expectations for our upcoming season debut and how it all fits into our season long plan. This is the episode that almost wasn't. Coach Greg totally messed this one up, and forgot to hit the record button when we started. Luckily we had a backup recording along with video going that allowed us to make this episode happen. Now that the crisis has been averted we've been stockpiling listener questions for a couple of weeks, and feel like we've got enough to do an entire show of them. Our listeners ask, so we answered. The questions run the gamut from quick and simple to deeper and more thought provoking. Listen along, learn something new and laugh along with us as we discuss all of the questions. As always, if you've got any questions you'd like to see us answer leave a comment below, and we'll be sure to answer it the next time we do a Q&A. You're doing what you think is all the right training, but you aren't improving any more. The team discusses some of the reasons you might not be seeing the same year to year improvement you saw early on in your journey. Sit down with the Team Next Level coaches as we discuss preparing to nail the bike leg of your next triathlon. We discuss planning out your season, things to work on, types of metrics to track and a bunch of other random stuff. This was a fun one, made even more enjoyable by a special guest host.
The majority of triathletes come to the sport lacking in their swim background. Whether you're an adult onset swimmer, or haven't swam much since your youth the coaches of Team Next Level can help you better plan out your swim training so that you show up to your next race fit and fast and ready to PR that swim leg. We talk about all the ways to set up your training, what swim aids are useful (and how to use them), and how to get the most out of your swim. This is part 1 of a 3 part series that will look at training for each of the three disciplines of triathlon. Listen in and we are sure you'll find something to help improve your swim. #SwimSesh. You can always do your best to control the controllables, but be prepared for the things that may happen in your race. This week we sit down and brainstorm all of the things that might go wrong in your race and how to best deal with them. As we go through each of the three disciplines we try and think of all the different things that might not go your way from getting kicked in the swim, to overheating and dealing with tummy trouble on the run. Hopefully we are able to share some things that can help you plan for a more fun and enjoyable race your next time out. Welcome back to part 2 of our look into all of the data. Today on the quad pod we discuss different training metrics found on popular data platforms such as CTL, TSB, ATL, HRV, Cardiac drift, efficiency factor along with others. We also discuss weight and tracking it, sleep statistics that are important to performance. At the end of this one we hope you have a better idea of what metrics are out there and possibly how to incorporate them into your training so that you know what the numbers represent and how to modify what you are doing to best serve you. The Next Level Coaches really put their thinking hats on for this one. Data surrounds us, and is unavoidable. As an athlete there are apps, wearables, accessories, and tools that allow us to measure just about anything you'd like to. In this episode we dive into it all and wade through the information so we can help you understand what data is really important to track and act upon, and which data might not be as helpful as it's made out to be. Part 1 of this multipart series starts off discussing heart rate and how we can use it to help us set training zones. We then get into power based training and how blood lactate might even be helpful to some of you. We do our best to cover material in an easy to understand way that will hopefully be beneficial to all of our listeners. Today we bring in one of the OG members of Team Next Level. Yvonne has been part of the Next Level Family for a long time and shares some of her lessons learned (remember your shoes) and how to's when it comes to fitting triathlon into your busy life. In addition to all the tips and tricks, Yvonne is just a fun person to help keep the laughs rolling. Sometimes we forget that triathlon is a sport for all of us, and Yvonne reminds us that as a mother of two, a recent grandmother, business manager of three PT clinics, vegan, and narcoleptic (I'm not making this stuff up folks), that if you commit to your goals, the sky is the limit. Today we are joined by former professional triathlete Aaron Birch. Aaron was a force in the local tri scene as he moved through the ranks. He tried his hand at the pro level and found out that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. On the pod, we discuss how he got to the point of being able to call himself a professional, and what it was like competing against the best in the world. Aaron spoke candidly and openly about his history in the sport, what it took to make it into the pro ranks, and what ultimately led to him making the decision to leave the sport. As always with our guests, we hit him with our rapid fire round of questions at the end. I hope you all enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it. Also, we are floating around possible new names for the podcast. We share two that are in the running. Leave a comment on which one you like more, or share your own suggestion. Today we have two Team Next Level Athletes, our co-host James Koh, along with teammate Koichi Iwata who had an amazing time at the Philly Marathon this past weekend. James completed his first marathon and Koichi his second. Both James and Koichi share some of their highs and lows of race day, along with lessons they learned along the way. It's a great episode that really can help all athletes learn things for their next race, be it a 5k or a marathon.
No two ways around it, multisport is an equipment intensive endeavor. There's gear for all three sports, and it's tough to wrap your head around what you need, what is nice to have, and what is probably a waste of time and money. We are happy to have our first guest on the pod. We sit down and chat with Dr. John Mendenhall. Dr. John is our fearless leader, and the director of the team that has brought us all together. During the pod we get into John's background in sport, from his short lived career as an offensive lineman, to his experiences as a D1 college swimmer (skip to 9:00 in for a phenomenal story), and then we dig into how he came to multisport and eventually got into coaching.
