He describes finishing controlled despite feeling slightly limited from lower recent volume, and recovering strongly enough to run again just two days later. The conversation then shifts into balancing marathon training with full-time work and parenting, including averaging around 5.5–6 hours of sleep, and how athletes can manage expectations when life stress is high. Kyle discusses his current goals, aiming to PB from 2:31:40 while seeing sub-2:30 as a longer-term progression rather than forcing it too early. Matt and Kyle also explore how weather impacts marathon outcomes, Matt's return from a sacral stress fracture alongside asthma management, and the plan to gradually rebuild volume and threshold work. They touch on shoe preferences, including the Puma Fast-R 3, interest in testing Chinese super shoes, and broader thoughts on adaptation to footwear, supplements, fueling, and strength training, with Kyle likely targeting peak long runs of 35–37K. Let's be honest: most managers don't know how to solve problems. They spend their days firefighting issues they don't understand, slapping on plasters, and praying the next disaster waits until they are on holiday. Enter Ed Wells, Chief Strategy Officer of What Caused This, who's here to explain why your organisation's approach to problem-solving is probably as effective as the proverbial chocolate teapot. This episode explains the messy, often ignored world of root cause analysis—not just as a buzzword, but as a way to stop repeating the same mistakes. Ed breaks down why complexity isn't going away, why your quick-fix mentality is costing you more than it's saving, and why the "five whys" method is just the start.Ed explains to Jimmy and James, ever the sceptics, that this is just for specialists and pointy heads. Whether you're dealing with a train company blaming "lack of staff" for delays (while ignoring the fact they sacked half the workforce) or a football club sacking managers like it's a hobby, the lesson is clear: if you don't dig deep, you will never understand the causes of your problems.Key points:Complexity isn't a trend—it's the new normal, and your old problem-solving habits won't cut it.Root cause analysis isn't just for disasters; it's for preventing them (and maybe even improving things). The "golden four" criteria for solutions: Will it work? Can I do it? Can I afford it? Will it backfire spectacularly?Teams solve problems better than lone wolves—but good luck getting one when the budget's been slashed. If you don't track your fixes, you're doomed to repeat the same mistakes. So, if you're tired of putting out fires only for them to reignite the second you turn your back, this is your wake-up call. Or, as Ed might say, your chance to stop being the hare and start being the tortoise—before the race ends.Got a question - get in touch. Click here.
What separates an age-grouper who keeps improving from one who plateaus? It often isn't the next training method or the latest gadget. It's how they think about their training as a whole. In this episode, we sit down with Mikael Eriksson, founder of Scientific Triathlon and host of That Triathlon Show. With nearly nine years of full-time coaching experience and an engineering background, Mikael takes a systematic, pragmatic approach to triathlon training that has helped athletes go from beginners to professional level. We talk about how to profile athletes by their physiological strengths, why specificity is overrated for long-course racing, and the three metrics every coach should master: external load, internal load, and RPE. Mikael also shares his philosophy on hard work in an era obsessed with recovery optimization: "You can become a pretty good athlete with very bad recovery if you're putting in the work. You cannot fully optimize your recovery and become a good athlete if you're not putting in the work."If you're a competitive age-grouper looking for the right levers to pull, or a coach refining how you work with experienced athletes, this conversation offers a grounded, practical framework rather than a list of hacks.Connect with Mikael on:InstagramYoutubeLinkedinhttps://scientifictriathlon.com/Connect with Bruna & Fabi:@justbrunathings@endurance_fabihttps://jornadaendurance.com/https://www.humanendurancepodcast.com/

Greg Benning is a masters single sculler outside Boston — and at 64, he's still finding ways to get faster. I came into this conversation not knowing much about rowing, but that's exactly what made it powerful: once Greg translates the sport, what emerges is a universal framework for longevity performance. For the last 15 years, Greg's question has been simple: can marginal gains in efficiency offset age-related decline? In this episode, he shares the practical systems that keep him sharp — from how he thinks about “power leaks” in the kinetic chain, to how he refined fueling around hard sessions, to the daily logistics that make consistency possible in a real adult life. In This Episode, You'll Hear The mindset shift: treating aging as a problem-solving game, not a verdict A simple “1% method” for identifying the small changes that compound over years Why rowing is a power-endurance sport (and how it compares to running/cycling/swimming) The hidden performance trap Greg discovered: under-fueling hard days — and how changing it improved how he felt and performed How technical execution gets harder under high exertion — and why cues matter most when it “hurts” The environment side of longevity: designing mornings so training is frictionless (and traffic-free) Why equipment and connection points matter — where speed gets “lost” before it ever reaches the water Resources Mentioned / Related Joe Friel's Training Bible (referenced in discussion) Shimano Rowing Dynamics / footwear and “power leak” discussion (related article/background)

What actually drives performance in professional cycling, and how much of it is science versus experience? In this episode, Dr David Bailey joins us to unpack over two decades of work across Olympic sport and WorldTour cycling. From talent identification and training philosophy to nutrition, heat, altitude, and the evolving role of data, David shares what really matters when building high performance athletes. We dive into the concept of marginal gains and why most people misunderstand it, how teams prioritize what actually moves the needle, and why talent and training still outweigh everything else. The conversation also explores real world applications of AI, individualized nutrition strategies, and the complex mix of physiology, psychology, and race strategy that ultimately decides who wins.___________________Today's speakers:Prof Paul Laursen https://www.paullaursen.com/Dr David Bailey https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-bailey-77111640/

In this energetic episode of Business Coaching Secrets, Karl Bryan and Rode Dog dig deep into the mindsets, frameworks, and daily practices that separate the world's best coaches and entrepreneurs from the rest. Through rapid-fire "word association," Karl reveals actionable insights for productivity, building a powerful personal brand, becoming an ideal mentor, and thinking like legends such as Musk, Bezos, and Zuckerburg. Whether you're wondering why most coaches fail or how to stop making unforced errors, this episode is stacked with real-world advice for coaches ready to upgrade their business and impact. Key Topics Covered The To-Do List Trap and Productivity Hacks Karl explains why most people never complete their to-do list and how focusing on just three critical tasks each day—especially before 10 AM—can 10x productivity and happiness. He urges coaches to build "done lists," embrace the 80/20 rule, and set high-leverage priorities. Amateur vs. Pro: The Mindset Shift Karl breaks down how professionals obsess over what could go wrong, practice to improve (not just to practice), and invest in personal development as the ultimate asset—channeling wisdom from Warren Buffett to Tom Brady. Rules of Business and Coaching From Warren Buffett's investing rules to Karl's "two rules of business" (get clients, keep clients), the hosts link real-world examples to a simple guiding framework. Coaches are reminded that keeping clients is even more vital than getting them. The Ideal Mentor Karl introduces three coach archetypes—Hider, Winger, and Installer. The most successful mentors don't just pile on tasks but help clients cut through noise and focus on what not to do, providing systems, accountability, and transformation over mere motivation. Learning from the Great Entrepreneurs Insights from Bezos, Musk, and others show that solving bigger problems, operating as if you're always 30 days from going out of business, and having a compelling North Star all lead to outsized success. Avoiding Unforced Errors Business is a game of minimizing mistakes, from "stupid taxes" to client audits using the 80/20 rule. Whether in the Super Bowl or business, those who avoid unforced errors typically win. Why Most Coaches Fail Instead of acting with conviction and serving business owners directly, many coaches waste productivity hanging out with other coaches, lack clarity, or never truly commit. The Power of a North Star and Personal Brand From Elon Musk's Mars mission to Gary Vee's obsession with attention, a powerful vision attracts results. Karl discusses practical personal branding in the social media era and why "who knows you" outweighs "who you know." Notable Quotes "Remember, a real mentor can tell you what NOT to do." "Amateurs talk, pros listen. Amateurs want to make it, pros want to keep it." "If you really want to feel productive… create a 'done list' versus a to-do list and get your top three done by 10am." "If you can't make fast buying decisions, you won't attract people who make fast buying decisions." "You don't need more motivation. What you need is less options." Actionable Takeaways Network where your clients are: Spend 80% of your outreach time in the spaces business owners frequent, not just talking shop with other coaches. Prioritize and narrow your focus: Each day, pick your top three high-leverage actions before adding anything else. Success compounds through focus and execution. Think in mental models: Apply the 80/20 rule, "what could go wrong?", and profit-driven frameworks to decision-making and client strategy. Build your personal brand deliberately: It's not just what you know or who you know, it's who knows you. Be visible, use social media strategically, and craft a clear message. Become an Installer, not a Winger: Develop systems your clients can implement and show them where to look, not what to see. Hold yourself and others accountable for action. Imitate the greats with your North Star: State your dream and mission boldly. Big claims lead to big impact, clarity, and opportunities. Minimize unforced errors: Audit your client list for profitability, avoid busywork, and learn from athletes: controlling mistakes wins championships (and businesses). For most of us getting into a wind tunnel is but a dream. Tunnels are hard to find and harder to afford. As an alternative Josh has recommended the Chung Method. It's proven yet it does take some expertise to get right. What if there were something in the middle. Something that is more accessible and less expensive than a wind tunnel yet doesn't require the hours of commitment and trial and error of field testing? Our guest believes he has just that. AiRO may sound like a company that is trying to latch onto the "AI" craze. But its founder, Ingmar Jungnickel, has been into cycling aerodynamics long before Chat GPT became a thing. He has a degree in engineering, he's developed on-bike aero hardware, and he worked for Specialized where he logged many hours in that company's wind tunnel. All of that, along with a chance opportunity to work with speed skaters, led him to develop a CFD program that attempts to make cycling aerodynamics more accessible. Ingmar's back story includes meeting are own Josh Poertner. But the real story here is how good Computational Fluid Dynamics has become. The potential of AiRO and its date even blew the mind of Josh as you will hear in this episode of Marginal Gains.

My guests often share stories from their careers of stepping into a new role which they know is going to require them to grow but is also going to allow them to leverage knowledge, skills and experience that they have developed in multiple previous positions. It's a very satisfying scenario to find ourselves in because we know that there's a good chance we will be able to bring more of what we've already got — our existing capability — to bear in this new position. It increases our opportunity to add value, perform well and experience fulfilment from doing so. I was able to draw on my own roots and background experience recently when invited to a customer event. My past roles in fleet management, leasing, retail automotive finance and mobility consulting meant that I thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in the topics of the day alongside good people. What made it extra special was that it came with a completely unexpected and highly relevant link to the work that I do now to enable Fulfilling Performance.About AndyI'm a business leader, coach, and the creator of the Fulfilling Performance framework—a simple, practical way to help leaders cut through silos, get people pulling in the same direction, and build ownership and accountability, so organisations perform better and their people thrive.Over the past 25+ years, I've led and developed businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Financial Services in the UK, Singapore, and New Zealand, and Tesla Financial Services UK. Alongside this, I've coached individuals and delivered leadership programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe, and North America. In 2016, I founded Aquilae (The Fulfilling Performance Company) to support CEOs and senior leaders in the mobility sector and beyond. Lee, Jose, and Ryan riff on prioritisation, habit-building, and realistic productivity—kicked off by LinkedIn-style memes and a tongue-in-cheek Coldplay anecdote. The core message lands with: “You can do anything, you just can't do everything.” That quote anchors Lee's new routine (post-work sessions on the cross trainer), Jose's James Clear–inspired systems and identity-based habits, and Ryan's focus on the aggregation of marginal gains—rewarding everyday wins like walking to the station or mowing the lawn. Expect practical talk on time management, consistency vs. guilt, and making fitness and personal growth fit real life (DIY seasons, office jobs, TikTok mishaps and all).If this episode helped you prioritise what truly matters—time management, habit stacking, gym consistency, LinkedIn memes, and that cheeky Coldplay concert reference—tap like, subscribe, and leave us a quick review. We take a look at what has become a dilemma for some Marginal Gains seekers and that is optimizing aero, rolling resistance on a tubeless, hookless rim. Josh has an admittedly unpopular take on the subject. We also get into the aerodymanic idea known as the Magnus Effect. The principle says that a spinning object will develop unequal pressure on either side as it moves throught air. Josh expains how -- if at all -- the Magnus Effect, affects that rotating thing we love; the bicycle wheel. We also have questions on hot waxing in a vacum oven, the aero cost of external cables, and what is kind of a Silca product shocker: it's Ultimate Shock Pump.
What if your next breakthrough didn't need to be big? In this episode, I explore how tiny 1% shifts- known as marginal gains- can lead to extraordinary results. You'll hear insights from elite sport and leadership psychology, and I share how these small changes have reshaped my own life and work. Because long-term success? It often starts with something small. If you're a high-achieving woman craving a more sustainable way to grow, this one's for you.
How can lessons from sports and psychology transform the way we lead, especially when the pressure is on? Kevin is joined by Sebastien Page to explore how high-performance mindsets from sports apply to leadership. They discuss how goal-induced blindness, where an intense focus on achieving goals can obscure ethical or practical considerations, impacts leaders and organizations. Sebastien shares how strong relationships, not fame or fortune, are the most significant predictors of long-term happiness and fulfillment. The episode also highlights a few of the eighteen principles from the book, including: Don't Die on Everest – The dangers of goal-induced blindness. Think About Death – Why zooming out to the end of your life can sharpen your focus today. We are on the ground at Sea Otter chasing Marginal Gains. A top theme at this year's show is something we have been discussing in our episodes: the wider tire revolution. Older XC tires have found new life on gravel race bikes and tire makers are responding. We hear from two major players on the tire side of things. Plus Dylan Johnson weighs in on how widespread the wider tire movement has become at the pointy end of races. We also wadedinto some new terrirotry: bike rack and bag maker Tailfin talks about its go-fast approach to bike packing. And finally, we met up with a one-of-a-kind company that has brought Marginal Gains...to leg shaving.
Business Coaching Secrets, Episode 293: Building Profitable Coaching Practices Just finished the latest episode of Business Coaching Secrets with Karl Bryan, and I'm fired up! Karl dropped a ton of actionable insights on business cost control, profitability frameworks, and how the power of focus (and saying “no”) is central to scaling any business or coaching practice. Here are my top three takeaways from the episode: Profit is the true domino: Karl emphasizes that profit is the driving force that knocks over all other dominoes in your business. Want a better team, more time off, happier clients? Focus on profitability first—it enables everything else. Frameworks beat firefighting: Don't get dragged into the weeds with clients. Leverage video training for the fundamentals, and use your coaching time exclusively for execution, implementation, and accountability. This strategic approach lets you double your client impact without doubling your hours. The power of saying NO: The most successful people (and coaches) are those who relentlessly say no to distractions and yes only to their core vision. Whether you're building your own practice or guiding clients, clarity on your “North Star” will dramatically improve your decision-making and results. There's so much gold in this episode for anyone in coaching or entrepreneurship. If you want to build a business you could sell tomorrow (but won't want to), this is a must-listen. #businesscoaching #profitability #entrepreneurship #growthmindset #BusinessCoachingSecrets Ready to elevate your coaching business? In this episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast, host Matt Chittim discusses the balance between skill development and enjoyment in running. He emphasizes the importance of marginal gains while also highlighting the need for runners to find joy and adventure in their training. By comparing running to other sports like basketball and golf, Matt illustrates that focusing solely on skill can lead to burnout and a loss of passion for the sport. He encourages listeners to embrace both structured training and spontaneous, enjoyable running experiences. Sponsors ASICS - Checkout the new and amazing Novablast 5 at www.asics.com. The Marginal Gains crew thought we'd throw a real curveball this episode and make every single question about cycling...and relevant, even. Wacky, huh? We talk about how the Silca Endurance chip might affect your lube schedule, the challenges of riding with a waxed chain in very cold weather, strategies you can use to reduce / remove speed wobbles on your bike, how a racer in the Leadville 100 MTB might make his artificial knee more aero, and much more. Mehdi Kordi has led the Dutch track riders to nine different Olympic medals including six Gold and 16 World Championships titles over 8 different athletes all on a fraction of the budget of their rivals. Interestingly Mehdi has never ridden a competitive bicycle race at any level or discipline. Prior to coaching the Dutch, Mehdi had a convoluted career where he only got into sporting world in his mid-twenties by doing a PhD which examined the training sciences to help optimise the performance of track riders in the Great Britain cycling team. Subsequently, he went on to become their sport scientist and coach of the Para-cycling team which lead him going on to the Dutch. On the podcast today John and Mehdi discuss how the concept of marginal gains is not applicable in the vast majority of sporting environments, how to focus on the big things that matter most, and more. In 2002, the British Cycling Team was a disaster. For 76 years, they had won a single Olympic gold medal. The culture was poor, the infrastructure was lacking, and the team was stuck in a cycle of underperformance. But then something changed. The team hired Dave Brailsford, who took a radical approach—he focused on making small, incremental improvements across every area. They didn't just improve the riders' physical performance; they looked at the bikes, the nutrition, the way they traveled, and even the sheets they slept on. The goal wasn't to make one big change but to improve everything, just a little, every day.The results? Well, the British Cycling Team went on to dominate the Olympics and become a powerhouse in the cycling world. And it wasn't a fluke. The same principles they applied in cycling can be applied to any business, including yours. What if we started improving everything from the way we interact with clients to the way we manage our business finances or design our fitness programs? That's exactly what Rick and Matt discuss in this episode. Dylan Johnson is back with a follow up to the testing he and Josh did in the spring. The race season started with the two of them in the wind tunnel looking for Marginal Gains that could be used in the Lifetime Grand Prix and the other off-road races Dylan had on his calendar. Dylan reports back with his "on-course" experience and a look at how other racers are adopting some of the advantages he and Josh first discovered. Dylan also has questions for Josh on how some of the new "finds" and Silca products can be used at the pointy end of off-road racing. This is two Marginal Gainers sharing notes on another season of discovery and execution.

We're so excited to kick this 35th episode of our "Ask Josh Anything" series with a discussion of the announcement of Silca's partnership with Visma Lease-A-Bike. Fatty does his level best to pitch having Hottie in the team car, hot-waxing on the move. We move from there to the challenges of high pressure with hookless rims, and how it has put Josh in the position of being the PSI bartender and cutting pressure-thirsty riders off. And that's just for starters. We also get into group ride marginal gains, changing pressure prescriptions for worn tires, whether 3D-printed Ti quicklinks should be a thing, the likely aero effects of Tadej's six-figure watch, and more. Enjoy this packed episode of Marginal Gains!
