What do charlatans have to understand about human perception? Why are you so bad at recognizing a real penny among fakes? What did Eagleman have to do with the redesign of the Euro, and why did he campaign to the European Central Bank that all their bills should be blank with a single hologram in the middle? In this episode, explore the crossroads of perception and deception. Brief appearance from special guest Adam Savage.

A lender charging more than 180 percent on some loans has been ordered to pay a $200,000 penalty by the High Court in Christchurch. Eagle Man group was providing high cost loans in breach of multiple aspects of the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act. The Commerce Commission, which took the case, said the majority of loans Eagle man issued were to customers who were already financially strained, including recent immigrants and people on temporary work visas. Commerce Commission Deputy Chair Anne Callinan spoke to Lisa Owen.
Today, we are going back into the archives for one of my favorite episodes: We are talking to neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and best-selling author, David Eagleman. We're talking about synaesthesia — and if you don't know what that is, you're about to find out.Special NoteWe are beyond thrilled that From Our Neurons to Yours has won a 2024 Signal Award in the Science Podcast category. It's a big honor — thanks to everyone who voted!---Imagine Thursday. Does Thursday have a color? What about the sound of rain — does that sound taste like chocolate? Or does the sound of a saxophone feel triangular to you? For about 3% of the population, the sharp lines between our senses blend together. Textures may have tastes, sounds, shapes, numbers may have colors. This sensory crosstalk is called synesthesia, and it's not a disorder, just a different way of experiencing the world. To learn about the neuroscience behind this fascinating phenomenon and what it tells us about how our brains perceive the world, we were fortunate enough to speak with David Eagleman, a neuroscientist, author, and entrepreneur here at Stanford. Eagleman has long been fascinated by synesthesia and what it means about how our perceptions shape our reality. We also discuss Eagleman's work with Neosensory, a company that develops technology to help individuals with hearing loss by translating sound into vibrations on the skin. The episode highlights the adaptability and plasticity of the brain, offering a deeper understanding of how our perceptions shape our reality. In addition to his research, Eagleman is a prolific communicator of science — the author of several books including Livewired and Incognito and host of the PBS series "The Brain with David Eagleman" and the new podcast series "Inner Cosmos".Enjoy!LinksLivewired (book)Incognito (book)Wednesday Is Indigo Blue (book)Neosensory (website)Synesthete.org (website)Inner Cosmos with David Eagleman (podcast)Episode CreditsSend us a text! Thanks for listening! When he was a child, Eagleman fell off a roof and time seemed to run in slow motion. When he became a neuroscientist, he grew curious about the experience and collected hundreds of similar stories from others. But is it true that your brain can actually see in slow motion, like Neo in the Matrix? And how would you test that? Hear how he dropped volunteers from a tower to put the science to the test, and what the answer reveals about our perception, memory, and experience of the world.
ABDUCTED presents authentic stories of American Indians who live on or off reservations and who were abducted by the benevolent Star People and by the malevolent aliens. Betsey Lewis's new book details stories of alien abductions by a variety of extraterrestrials—Grays, the Elders who appear cloned, insect-like, and Lizard or Reptilian-looking. Some are benevolent and others have a dark agenda to control humanity. They exist hidden in bases beneath Earth's deepest oceans, and in deep underground bases. Discover how the U.S. military colludes with the eight-foot Reptilians for their advanced technology. Learn about Earth's Portals/Wormholes/Stargates where aliens enter dimensional realms to travel the universal highways. Portals are known to exist worldwide and on other planets. The infamous Skinwalker Ranch in Southeast Utah is theorized to have a portal that allows UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) to suddenly appear and disappear in seconds or dive through solid rock and appear in another area of Skinwalker Ranch's Mesa.In one disturbing story, Leland, an American Indian, watched spaceships land on his reservation ranch one night as late-model black cars were lowered to the ground. Human-looking clones got into the cars and when the car returned the next night, only the driver returned. None of them spoke to him, but Leland sensed they were being taken to bus terminals, airports, and cities throughout the United States—any place where they could live undetected. He said his ranch is a “drop-off center.” No one would know they were different-looking humans in the big cities--they would blend in.Lewis theorizes that thousands of cloned humans have been dumped in major cities throughout the world for the past twenty years or more, and were programmed to create chaos, hate, and violent protests that we are currently witnessing throughout the United States and Europe. It's all part of the plan to control Earth and humans. Everyone is curious about life in the Universe, UFOs and whether ET is out there. Over the course of his thirty-year career as an astrophysicist, Adam Frank has consistently been asked about the possibility of intelligent life in the universe. Are aliens real? Where are they? Why haven't we found them? What happens if we do?We've long been led to believe that astronomers spend every night searching the sky for extraterrestrials, but the truth is we have barely started looking. Not until now have we even known where to look or how. In The Little Book of Aliens, Frank, a leading researcher in the field, takes us on a journey to all that we know about the possibility of life outside planet Earth and shows us the cutting-edge science that has brought us to this unique moment in human history: the one where we go find out for ourselves. In this small book with big stakes, Frank gives us a rundown of everything we need to know, from the scientific origins of the search for intelligent life, the Fermi Paradox, the Kardashev Scale, the James Webb Telescope, as well as UFOs and their conspiracy theories. Drawing from his own work and that of other scientists studying the possibility of alien life, he brings together the latest scientific thinking, data, ideas, and discoveries to equip us with the critical facts as we stand at what may be the last moment in human history where we still believe we are all alone. This book is about everything we do—and do not—know about life, intelligent or otherwise beyond Earth. In language that is engaging, entertaining and fun, The Little Book of Aliens provides a comprehensive first look at how close we are to finding out if others actually exist—and if they do, what they might be like.Humankind is on the precipice of finding its neighbors. What comes next? No person is better suited to answer that question—and lead the search—than Adam Frank.BioAdam is the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen professor of astrophysics at the University of Rochester. For many years Adam was a leading expert on the final stages of evolution for stars like the sun. His current work focuses on life in the Universe, the search for “technosignatures” of other exo-civilizations, along with climate change and the “Astrobiology of the Anthropocene.” He has also carrying out work on the physics of life through studies via an information theory perspective.Adam has appeared on the Joe Rogan show, Pharrel Williams iamOTHER podcast, Coast to Coast Radio and others. He has also appeared on a variety of national and international science documentaries such as Alien Worlds, Mars and The Universe.Adam has received a number of awards for his scientific and outreach work. His book Light of the Stars won the 2019 National Honors Society Best Book in Science. In 2020 he was given the American Physical Society's Joseph A. Burton Forum Award. Expanding your worldview starts with understanding your brain. Stanford neuroscientist David Eagleman explains. David Eagleman, a neuroscientist at Stanford and host of the Inner Cosmos podcast, explores how our brains shape the reality we experience and why we often accept our perceptions as the only truth. From a young age, we develop our understanding of the world based on limited experiences and biases, which can lead us to form narrow views about what's true. Eagleman explains that our genetics and life experiences wire our brains in unique ways, meaning that each of us sees the world a little differently. He introduces the idea of "perceptual genomics," which looks at how slight genetic differences influence our perception of reality. He also discusses how our brains naturally create in-groups and out-groups, a tendency rooted in evolution that affects how much empathy we feel for others. To overcome these biases, Eagleman suggests that we start by recognizing our own prejudices, understanding the tactics of dehumanization, and connecting with others through shared interests. The brain easily forms ingroups and outgroups – and shows different responses when viewing one or the other. At the extreme, the brain stops seeing outgroup members as people, but more like objects. But are there ways to rehumanize? And in this context, what do heroes look like? In this episode, Eagleman talks with two men -- Maoz Inon and Aziz Abu Sarah -- one Israeli and one Palestinian. The two men, full of pain and sorrow, are fighting. But they are fighting side by side. They are fighting to repair the future. Learn what peacebuilders are, how they function, and what this has to do with the neuroscience of dehumanization, ingroups, outgroups, and the possibilities -- both political and neural -- for rehumanization.

David is taking his birthday week off and wanted to re-share this episode due to it's ongoing relevance. Modern AI is blowing everyone's mind. But is it intelligent like humans, or is it just playing impressive statistical games? Could AI reach or exceed our level of intelligence, and how would we know when it gets there? Traditional tests for intelligence (Turing test, Lovelace test, etc) have long been surpassed, so Eagleman proposes a new kind of test.

Imagine Thursday. In addition to his research, Eagleman is a prolific communicator of science — the author of several books including Livewired and Incognito and host of the PBS series "The Brain with David Eagleman" and the new podcast series "Inner Cosmos".Enjoy!LinksLivewired (book)Incognito (book)Wednesday Is Indigo Blue (book)Neosensory (website)Synesthete.org (website)Inner Cosmos with David Eagleman (podcast)Episode CreditsThis episode was produced by Michael Osborne, with production assistance by Morgan Honaker, and hosted by Nicholas Weiler. Why do they use a gun at the Olympics? And why can you get off the blocks after the bang but still be disqualified for jumping the gun? Few things are as bizarre as our time perception. From sprinters to basketball players, from Kubla Khan to Oppenheimer, from television broadcasting to hallucinations, Eagleman unmasks illusions of time that surround us. Why does the brain work so hard to pull off editing tricks? And what does this tell us about our perception of reality?
The opening lines of David M. Eagleman's Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives inspires this week's episode, just in time for Halloween. Eagleman's premise is that you aren't fully dead until your name is spoken for the last time. And although the thought of your name never being spoken again, never again being remembered by the living, is horrific, is it perhaps even more terrifying to imagine that your soul will not be able to rest until you cease to be spoken of? What about famous dead people whose names will be evoked for centuries to come? Do they ever get tired of people ceaselessly talking about them? What about people who are mistakenly remembered for things they didn't do (good or evil)? Join us for this morbid discussion. And have a happy Halloween! ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world. Send us an email to get the conversation started. We all know people who hate the word "moist". But why are they fine with synonyms such as "damp" or "wet"? What's going on in their brains, and what does this have to do with synesthesia, autism, shapes, slacks, and sound probabilities? Join this week's episode as Eagleman leads us into the new and wild world of word aversion.
Why do briefly glimpsed people appear to be more attractive? Why did portrait photographers put Vaseline on their lenses, and what does that have to do with Instagram filters? Why are thirsty people more likely to perceive something as transparent? And what does any of that have to do with mating, optimal decision making, puberty, frogs, and movie stars? In this episode, Eagleman gets us to view the familiar as strange as we examine beauty, instincts, and what drives us.
Why is there so much polarization, and what does this have to do with neuroscience? Why do people on all sides of the political spectrum feel that if they could shout loudly enough in all caps on Twitter, everyone would come to see they're right? And what does any of this have to do with literature, genetics, nobleman Lord Gordon, bumperstickers, visualization, or the Iroquois Native Americans? Join as Eagleman draws from distant fields to show why we always feel so certain we know the truth.
