It's a Ticked Off Tuesday! First up, a listener calls for standardized coffee cup sizes across all cafes. Is it a medium or a small? Why does a “large” at one place feel like a “small” at another? Jared weighs in on the daily chaos of caffeine inconsistency. Then, we head to the slopes of Mont Tremblant, where the only thing colder than the weather was the food. One listener shares their disappointment over flavorless fries, bland pasta, and a serious lack of seasoning. And finally, a group of sisters go out for a nice dinner and are served a charcuterie board that looked like leftovers from another table. Jared reviews the attached photo and gives his take on what is and definitely isn't charcuterie-worthy.Tune in for relatable rants, some hard truths about fancy food, and Jared's unfiltered reactions to your most frustrating (and hilarious) complaints.Support the podcast by supporting our sponsors!Ava Support the show and start building better credit. Mathieu Bourgouin, a Canadian real estate investor and agent from Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, started investing in the U.S. in 2014. His journey began in Florida and then expanded to Pittsburgh, including ventures in wholesaling and mobile home parks. He has now transitioned primarily to short-term rental properties in Florida. • Initial Investments: Mathieu found U.S. properties more affordable than Canadian ones. His first investments were in lower-value properties in Pittsburgh that provided good cash flow but were challenging to refinance due to their low value. As the Pittsburgh market appreciated, he sold many properties and shifted his focus. • • Transition to Florida: Mathieu moved his investments to Florida, particularly Orlando, capitalizing on the strong year-round demand driven by Disney World and tourism. Short-term rentals appealed to him due to higher returns and fewer tenant-related issues compared to long-term rentals. • • Investment Strategies: o He emphasized creative financing methods like seller financing and targeting properties with opportunities for value-add or optimization. o Mathieu noted the importance of working with realtors to find deals that meet his criteria. o • Short-Term Rental Tips: o Focus on properties in tourist-friendly areas with strong zoning for short-term rentals. o Look for amenities like community pools and recreational facilities that add value. o Optimize property performance through better marketing, like using custom websites and leveraging tools like Facebook pixels. o • Operational Insights: The rise of apps and automation tools has made managing short-term rentals much easier, from finding cleaners to managing bookings. This has reduced costs for property management, which can now be as low as 15%. • • Selling Optimized Properties: Short-term rental properties can be sold as turnkey investments with higher value when optimized for income, appealing to buyers who want passive income without additional setup. • • Key Lesson: Invest in areas where you enjoy spending time. This ensures a more enjoyable experience if visits for management or oversight are required. The conversation highlights the evolution of short-term rentals and the importance of adapting strategies to market conditions.
I recently completed an ultra-endurance challenge called 29029, where I climbed the vertical equivalent of Mount Everest, 29029 feet, in 36 hours. Reaching the summit took everything I had and plenty that I didn't think I had. And I learned so much. There are things we can only learn by going way outside our comfort zone, by finding the edge of our abilities, and stretching ourselves beyond what our brains believes we are capable of. I surprised myself, I met myself, and I discovered myself. In this follow-up episode, I'm sharing the final lessons I learned in those uncomfortable, sometimes painful, hours I spent climbing and ultimately conquering to Mont Tremblant. I hope they will help you, encourage you, and inspire you as you face the Everests in your life. **Looking for tickets to HOPE DAY? I'm part of an all-day coaching event in Utah on October 12th and if you'd like to get a ticket you can use this link: www.eventbrite.com/e/930171486957/?discount=April

Returning to Fika with Vicky this week are Authors Shelley (Michelle) Dorey and Jim Moriarty. We had so much fun discussing their A Haunting in Kingston Series in Episode 37, that we decided to visit again with their Witch Way paranormal fiction series. From Michelle ““I've lived in Kingston Ontario all my life, born here, went to Queen's University, and raised my children in this historic city. I like the size and feel of the city and can't think of living anywhere else. Jim Moriarty is my spouse and partner in life, but he was born and lived in New York City, specifically the Bronx. When he was in his twenties, he came to Canada to ski at Mont Tremblant and within a year, he uprooted his life to move here, raising his own kids in Smith Falls which is fairly close to Kingston. We met in 2010 and have been together since then. It was finding a soul mate for both of us, and well worth the wait. We both enjoy skiing, our trips to Cuba every winter, enjoying a beer at our firepit in the evening, and playing with our pug, Suki. We started writing the Hauntings of Kingston series after going on the local Haunted Walk in 2012. It was fun visiting spots in Kingston and hearing tales of ghosts that have been seen in houses, taverns and even near the courthouse where the gallows once stood. But when we got home, we were frustrated as well; we were given the bare bones of the tales, missing the details of the stories. Who were the people who encountered the ghosts? How did the haunting happen? How did the people experience living in a house that was haunted? And that is what sparked the first novel – The Haunting of Crawley House. It is loosely based on a haunted residence that the university owns. We were told a woman died tragically while living there, and that her spirit has been seen in the garden and also in the attic area of the home to this very day. But who was the woman? How did she die? All we were told was it had been a tragic death. What if it was murder? As you can see, asking questions like that flings open the door to the imagination. Well, after finishing that tour, Jim and I started musing on the tale. What if the woman who died was in fact murdered? Why was she killed? And why is she still on this mortal plane, not having moved over to the other side? And that's how my career as an author began. We were in our kitchen, playing this game of ‘what if', and answering the questions. As we did, a story came to life. Today, we call our kitchen ‘The Magic Room'. That's because for many books now, as we prepare and eat supper we brainstorm, bouncing ideas off each other, pausing to jot notes. From there, I will write the next day and he'll do a read-back where things get expanded or changed. There is always a back and forth. There are times that Jim will do a complete re-write of a chapter if he feels it could use more passion. Jim is the more dramatic and I'm the more aloof but disciplined type. It's a good balance and partnership in writing. We are both fans of Stephen King, Anne Rice and Dean Koontz and we read a lot. After writing many frightening tales of ghosts and hauntings, I wanted to write books with more of a fantasy and magical theme. Well, that brought me to a new pen name (Shelley Dorey—yes, I know, how original, huh? LOL . We took another week off! What's going on?? We went to Quebec that's what! This week on The Hood Morning Pod, Awale and Stretch return to their regular duet and share stories from their recent trip. Coincidentally, both happened to go on the same trip at the same time with different groups. From speeding tickets to racist encounters, the entire episode is literally story after story. Hopefully it makes up for our sudden week off (and late upload lol).
Coach Marilyn had a big upset when 70.3 Mont Tremblant was cancelled while she waited on the beach for the race to start. Air quality issues were to blame and it was probably the correct call to cancel the race but it still sucks. Listen along as we discuss her experience, how to overcome obstacles and then discuss how to deal with training in less than great air quality situations. We also spend some time discussing how to get the most from your open water swim sessions. The event, which was originally scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 25 was cancelled due to the devastating wildfires that are continuing to burn across the Province of Quebec, causing a high concentration of fine particles along with poor Air Quality Index (AQI) to move into the region and make conditions unsafe to host the event. That's why we're extremely pleased to be able to offer a new date to our registered athletes and to combine two great events, celebrating the best of sportsmanship. Last year saw a sprint finish between Ben Hoffman and Magnus Ditlev and the drama matched it 12 months on. Von Berg and Wilkowiecki had swapped the lead on the marathon but behind them Marquardt was demonstrating why he's a rookie to keep a very close eye on. The overall age-group winner at Kona last year after only starting the sport in 2021, this was his first ever IRONMAN race as a pro and he closed dramatically late on as Wilkowiecki looked set for the win. But von Berg was always within range and he pounced just as the Pole started to struggle inside the final mile. There was drama of an unwanted kind for the two big pre-race favourites – three-time Texas winner Matt Hanson's chances disappeared after an age-grouper apparently crashed in front of him while Joe Skipper was reported to have taken on a wrong turn on the bike to scupper his hopes. And it wasn't a big surprise to see last year's #1-ranked swimmer Andrew Horsfall-Turner (GBR) set the pace in the water. But he didn't have things all his own way – he headed a group of four at the halfway point, with Wilkowiecki on his feet, closely followed by von Berg and Marquardt. And that was how it stayed heading into T1 as Horsfall-Turner clocked 48:50, with Marquardt rounding out the leaders as he underlined his swim prowess. That quartet had over two minutes and more on the rest. Of the big favourites, Hanson was 10th out of the water at +3:38. And Skipper followed his pre-race promise of “a decent swim and sitting on the best feet I can” as he too was in that same pack. Heading onto the bike, von Berg lost a bit of time in T1 which left a leading trio out in front as the likes of Skipper and Hanson set about trying to hunt them down. All eyes were on Skipper early on the bike and the promised ‘new Dad watts‘ looked to be forthcoming as he started to cut through the field. His deficit on the leaders was down to 2:10 at 40 miles but the dynamic of the race started to change after that. For the leading four of von Berg, Wilkowiecki, Marquardt and Horsfall-Turner were working well together and they gradually started to put time between themselves and the rest. Unfortunately an age-group athlete apparently crashed in front of Hanson on the looped bike course and left him with nowhere to go and out of contention. So heading into T2 it was von Berg and Wilkowiecki who had moved clear, with each of them clocking best-of-the-day 4:05 bike splits. It was just the fourth IRONMAN of von Berg's career and his performance was a nod to coach Mikal Iden, with whom he's worked since the latter part of 2022. Speaking in the build up, von Berg had said his goal here was “the podium or better” and that was very much on the cards. Wilkowiecki was the only one who could match him and starting the run there were just 23 seconds between them. Marquardt was at +2:48, Horsfall-Turner +5:42 and Guilloux +7:02 while Skipper dropped right down the standings in the last few miles of the bike section, with the live broadcast reporting he'd taken a wrong turn – all of which meant he began the marathon over 20 minutes back on the leaders. It was fascinating up front as von Berg and Wilkowiecki swapped the lead early on. Both looked strong but Marquardt was charging in the second half and taking chunks of time back on both of them. No fewer than five IRONMAN World Championship slots in Nice were up for grabs and the trio were miles clear of their rivals and guaranteed a place barring a huge mishap. It was Wilkowiecki who appeared to be holding strongest but he suddenly started to send out distress signals going into the final mile and von Berg had timed his challenge perfectly. Just 12 seconds separated them on the line and Marquardt was only 21 seconds adrift on a phenomenal pro debut. It was nearly 10 minutes back to Guilloux in fourth, with Cody Beals taking the final Nice slot in fifth. PRO Men 1. Rudy von Berg (USA) – 7:44:51 2. Robert Wilkowiecki (POL) – 7:45:04 3. APRIL 24, 2023 CHRIS FOSTER, TIM HEMING Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! Download the app. The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced this morning that American pro triathlete Collin Chartier tested positive for EPO from an out-of-competition test performed on February 10, 2023. Upon receipt of the positive test, Chartier admitted to the use of the banned substance to the agency, and as a result received a reduced ban of three years, down from four according to the ITA. Erythropoietin, known as EPO, is prohibited under World Anti-Doping Agency regulations because it stimulates erythropoiesis (red blood cell production) and can modify the body's capacity to transport oxygen, increasing stamina, and performance. In a social media post released on Monday morning, Chartier went on to further admit his use of a “PED in November after feeling like I have lost my way in the sport,” due to “intense pressure and expectations to win the biggest races in 2024.” His post went on to say that he had no plans to return to the sport after the three-year ban was lifted. Despite having a relatively inauspicious short course career, Chartier was an up-and-coming triathlete in the long-course scene. Coached by Mikal Iden, the brother of reigning Ironman world champion Gustav, he was a shock winner of last year's inaugural PTO U.S. Open in Dallas in September where he won $100,000 topping a highly competitive field including Magnus Ditlev and Sam Long. Training alongside two-time Ironman world championship runner-up Lionel Sanders, the victory came three weeks after his first full-distance Ironman victory in Mont-Tremblant. Chartier then had a disappointing debut in Hawaii in the Ironman World Championship in October when he finished 35th. Prior to those results, Chartier's highest competitive finish was a win at Challenge Salou in October 2021 and a third-place finish at 70.3 Boulder in August of the same year. Fellow pros posting in response to Chartier's Instagram message gave mixed comments, with 2014 Ironman world champion Sebastian Kienle saying: “Let me guess, you bought it on the internet and also learned how to use it – all from the internet. Nobody helped you, nobody knew.” Former triathlete-turned-elite-runner Lauren Goss commented: “Dude brave of you . No one sees the mental health side. Walk through the fire.” Despite being PTO-ranked No 14 and an automatic qualifier, Chartier was not on the start-list for May's big money PTO European Open in Ibiza. He had originally planned to race Saturday's Ironman Texas and had been training at altitude in California, Ecuador, and Girona in Spain. The International Testing Agency (ITA), the testing body who administered and discovered the adverse finding is a Switzerland-based, not-for-profit that claims no connection to “sporting or political powers” on its website. The ITA conducts testing for the Ironman organization from a pool of 46 professional athletes currently registered in the Ironman Registered Testing Pool (RTP) as of this writing—which includes Chartier. Coincidentally, Ironman said that 2023 is the first year the brand has delegated results management and prosecution of doping cases to the ITA. “Testing plans are based on a variety of factors and differ from individual athlete to individual athlete, with review of specific performances, intelligence, and the testing plans of National Anti-Doping agencies to maximize resources,” Ironman said in a statement. “Ironman does acknowledge the significance of the decision made by Collin in promptly accepting responsibility for his actions.” What's New in the 303: Team Kona 2023 TriDot Women's Team Mark - give your competitor the food that doesn't have nutrition; no racing 6 weeks from kona; start at 300 calories per hour Michellie - Climatize but don't spend a season in sun, humidity and heat. In two years of this podcast, today's guest's name has come up so often when I ask them which Chief of Village they liked working with, that I had to reach out and ask if he would like to come on. He has done 39 seasons in Club Med and 14 years in the Miami office where he currently holds the position of Senior Director UDT (University des Talents). In Club Med, he is known by only one name and in fact, he is the only Club Med employee around the world that has a nickname in their Outlook address. I can only be talking about one man, from Vancouver, it's the one and only, the legend himself, Chris Keeley, AKA "Hammer"!! Hammer first learned about Club Med from his friend and EXGO, Sparrow, who had visited Club Med with his parents. Hammer actually had two first seasons, one short-team season in Moorea and one full season in 1989 in Club Med Turks and Caicos. He held many different G.O. positions over the years such as Waterski, Beach, Golf, Animator, Sports & Animation Coordinator, Chief of Sports and of course, Chief of Village. This interview covers his career from his first season as a Sports G.O. up until his last season as Chief of Sports. Hopefully, he will return at a later date for another interview, and there we will cover his first season as a Chief of Village. Before he became one of the most respected Chief of Villages ever, Hammer worked in villages such as Turks and Caicos, Playa Blanca, Cancun, Martinique, Sonora Bay, Phuket and Lindeman Island. In this interview, Hammer mentions a lot of names from the past you will recognize, people that mentored and inspired him. We also get into the origins of his famous nickname, and I'll bet that you didn't know it was given to him by a former NFL player! Not only does Hammer have a ton of great Club Med stories, but I also asked him about competing in Iron Man competitions and what that was like (he did his first one in 2015 in Mont Tremblant!). We also talk a little about what he is currently doing in Miami and how Club Med established itself as a premium brand and now offers a luxury range with the Exclusive Collection. We end the interview with the three things he misses the most about working in the villages. Please enjoy this interview with an amazing person!! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. It is one of the biggest races in the world and this year we will see two of the greatest long course athletes go head-to-head in Roth with Jan Frodeno coming up against Patrick Lange. They won't have it easy though with young guns, Sam Long and Magnus Ditlev there to cause an upset! We discuss all the action from WTCS Montreal, IronMan Frankfurt, Elsinore 70.3, Mont Tremblant 70.3 and IronMan Nice and why IronMan should give Flora Duffy a wild card entry to 70.3 Worlds this year.
