"It's what kept me going. It also drove me crazy at times, but I think it is what kept me in the sport, kept me pushing " - Eva Goodisson, Professional Triathlete. Eva represents New Zealand in Triathlon, currently gearing up for the Rome World Cup this Saturday Oct 5th. Starting out as a competitive swimmer and seeing success as a teen, Eva took an opportunity to run D1 Track at UC Davis in California USA, and is now is bringing all her skills together as an elite triathlete. Graduating in 2021, she went full throttle into her pro-athlete pursuit. It paid off when she got a spot as Reserve for the Commonwealth Games that same year, was introduced to the Elite Team, and propelled into competing on the world circuit. When a neural back injury came out of no where during a routine gym session just after her best placing, Eva began a tough two-year recovery journey which saw her strengthen her mind in ways never before anticipated. 2024 has seen her truly excel in her competitions already, and it is a gift to learn how she managed to navigate that time. Some wisdom Eva took away from her time in California, was that a diverse life full with multiple areas of focus away from sport, made her a better athlete. Balance is key. Youri Keulen is a 25 year old professional triathlete from The Netherlands. The eldest of triplets, he has been paving a path in sport from a young age, first as a footballer, then as a runner, where he claimed victory as a three-time national 800m champion in his teens. Picked up by a triathlon talent ID programme in the Netherlands on the back of his running and biking ability, his dream of becoming an Olympian never materialised and shortly after Tokyo 2020 he parted ways with the Dutch National team. Switching distances to take on his first middle distance race at IM 70.3 Maastricht in 2021 he was the fastest overall age grouper on the day, a few weeks later he made his pro debut at Challenge Peguera Mallorca and came fifth. Since then he has gone from strength to strength with some stand out performances including; Winning IM 70.3 Rapperswil -Jona in 2022. He finished in 6th place at last year's IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship and followed that up with a win at Challenge Peguera Mallorca and Challenge Barcelona. Earlier this year he came fourth at the T100 in Miami before a stellar performance saw him break the tape to win the Singapore T100 which changed the game for the young athlete and catapulted him into the triathlon spotlight globally. Youri shares insight into his life as a professional athlete, the importance of surrounding yourself with people who have the same vision and drive for you as you have for yourself, and also what his plans and aspirations are not only to the end of 2024, but beyond the next few months. A wise mind on young shoulders, Youri is excited about his future in the sport and is committed to being not only the best athlete he can be, but also the best triathlete in the world, whilst also hoping that his sporting endeavours will inspire future generations of young athletes at home and abroad. With a special connection to Ireland, through his girlfriend, former professional cyclist Imogen Cotter, Youri loves coming to Ireland and indeed loves the game of hurling, especially when Clare win.

Regan Hollioake, Professional Triathlete from Australia, talks to us about her journey from competitive open water swimming to triathlon. Regan discovered cycling as a strength after a standout performance at Busselton where she set the fastest ever age group female time. Living in a small town three hours north of Melbourne, she often trained alone but has more recently benefited from joining a training squad in Ballarat. We discuss her progression in running, from a 3:15 marathon to a 3:03 at IRONMAN Australia, despite not having a formal running background, and how she maintains a mindful approach to training volume to avoid injuries. Regan's debut as a professional athlete was at IRONMAN New Zealand, where she raced against notable competitors like Chelsea Sodaro and Els Visser. Despite initial doubts, she excelled and secured a fourth-place finish, validating her decision to go pro. We discuss her challenging lead-up to IRONMAN Australia, where she competed and won the race despite suffering a broken rib from an accident in the pool and an ulcerated cornea. Most recently Regan raced and won the full distance at Challenge Gunsan in Korea. Her next stop? Lake Placid and then the IRONMAN World Champs in Nice. She'll definitely be one to watch out for. The first triathlon in the UK was 1983. I did my first event in 1987 and while the sport continued to grow for the next 15 years it didn't really take off until the start of the Brownlee era from 2008. Having said that, there are a significant number of folks who I consider the legends - the Triathletes, coaches, and administrators who were instrumental in building the foundations of British triathlon. Since I started the podcast in 2017 I have spoken with many of these legends. Great coaches like Steve Trew and some of the top athletes from the 90's and 2000's like Jodie Swallow, Sarah Springman, Robin Brew, and Richard Hobson to name a few. Today's guest is another Legend of British Triathlon, Annie Emmerson, whose name you might recognise from her work with the BBC at triathlon events. We recently worked at Blenheim Triathlon and we started talking about her career in multi-sport from racing to broadcasting. In today's show we chat about: How triathlon saved Annie from a life of wine bars and partying Some characters from the good ol' days. Have you ever wondered about the life of a professional triathlete? In this podcast series, we interview current and retired QT2 Systems Professional Triathletes, exploring the path to earning (and maintaining) a pro license, the nuts and bolts of training and racing, and the ups and downs along the way. The guests also share how being a pro triathlete shaped their lives, and what advice they would give to their younger selves. Episode 5 features Vinny Johnson. Coming from a swimming background, Vinny raced his first triathlon in 1995, while still in college. After graduating, he fell out of his fitness routine and shifted to an inactive lifestyle. In 2006, motivated by the passing of his high school swim coach, Vinny returned the pool. Swimming was his therapy. Slowly, he re-found his routine, and soon after, looking for a challenge, he signed up for his first 70.3 triathlon. After several years of "ok" age group finishes, Vinny came to QT2 Systems as a Mission Plan athlete. Following a personalized training plan, together with coaching and nutrition guidance, and a focus on strength training, Vinny's performance steadily improved. In 2012, at IRONMAN Lake Placid, he won his age group and earned his pro card. Vinny immediately accepted his pro card, and went onto race 20 professional 70.3 and 140.6 events over the next three years. He was drawn to the hard races, and pushed himself to find his limits. He made mistakes, and learned from them. He won his final three races, and retired after his win at Beach2Battleship in 2015. Training for IRONMAN taught him that he can accomplish anything. Consistency breads improvement. Improvement breads confidence. Learn more about QT2 Systems at www.qt2systems.com Contact QT2 Systems at https://qt2systems.com/pages/contact

The guests also share how being a pro triathlete shaped their lives, and what advice they would give to their younger selves. Episode 4 features Amy Javens. Through high school and college, Amy raced on the track, specializing in the 100 and 400 hurdles. After taking some time off, she decided to re-find her athletic self, and jumped into endurance sports, with her first marathon in 2003 and her first IRONMAN in 2006. For a few years, she focused on the IRONMAN 70.3 distance, earning several age group podium spots. In July 2012, she came to QT2 Systems as an athlete, with a focus on IRONMAN racing. Eight weeks later, she placed second overall amateur at IRONMAN Louisville, earning the opportunity to apply for her Pro Card. At age 41, Amy raced her first pro race the following year and "everything that could have gone wrong went wrong." But still, she finished the race with a smile, ready to learn from the experience and better herself as an athlete. Amy looks back on her 2015 season as the season with both the most hardship and in which she had her ultimate performances. In that year, she came back from a very serious bike accident to race Beach to Battleship, and earn her first overall pro title and finishing in a time of 9:26! Going into it, Amy knew that she would retire from being a pro at 45 (which gave her 4 years as a pro). Shortly after retiring, she took the overall age group win at IRONMAN Cabo, qualifying for the IRONMAN World Championship. After racing Kona, she officially retired from racing triathlon. When asked if she would do it again, she answered without hesitation "absolutely!" Racing as a pro not only changed her life, but also set an example for her three daughters to try hard things, to work for what you believe in and to not be afraid of failure. We're thrilled to welcome professional triathlete turned professional trail runner Eli Hemming to the show. Jess and BJ followed Eli's career through Olympic distance draft-legal racing on the world stage until he chose to step away from his career as a professional triathlete. Despite being ranked #1 in the U.S. because of his multiple World Cup podiums, Eli's happiness factor was falling, and he could no longer ignore that it was time for a radical change. When he hit the trail running scene in 2021, he immediately found success qualifying for the 2022 Mountain Running Championships, and when he crossed over from sub-ultra to ultra-distance racing with a 2nd at the Way Too Cool. He finished that year with several podiums but did not claim victory at a race until 2023, a year of continued improvements and highlights like placing 2nd at the Marathon Du Mont Blanc. Since the calendar turned to 2024, he's been on a winning streak; it's almost as if the trails have been patiently awaiting his arrival. Jess and BJ caught up with Eli less than a week after he took the win at the Big Alta 50k by over 20 minutes in a cool 3:38:33, an incredible feat considering this race came on the heels of crushing his competition at the Black Canyon 60k just two weeks prior, where he broke the tape by 30 minutes over 2nd place in 4:06:39. Jack Moody, Professional Triathlete, is hosting the podcast with Bevan this week. We catch up on the racing from the weekend plus we talk about the “sellout” for the pros at the upcoming IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside race – will this be a nightmare to officiate? We share Sam Long's review of his race at the T100 in Miami and ask do pro athletes have their feet in both camps, despite having contracts with the PTO? We catch up with Graham Brewster, winner of the free race entry to IRONMAN Cairns. Bevan chats to Justin Ralph of Velo Performance – an organisation set up to help people across the spectrum optimise their on-bike position specifically related to their own cycling goals. Justin Ralph has spent a significant amount of time working with cyclists. In 2017 he transferred to High Performance Sport New Zealand and worked with Cycling New Zealand as a performance physiotherapist and bike fitter. Justin has been to the London and Rio Paralympics, the Tokyo Olympics as well as the 2018 Commonwealth Games and multiple World Championships and World Cups. Justin's journey from physiotherapy to the niche world of bike fitting and aero testing reveals a unique perspective on cycling performance. He shares his experience in working with a diverse range of cyclists—from everyday enthusiasts to para-athletes and national track teams—and how he tailors bike fittings to enhance both comfort and speed. We discuss the intricate process of adapting bikes for athletes with disabilities and the evolution of aero testing from wind tunnels to real-time track assessments. Jess and BJ welcome professional triathlete and flight attendant Svenja Thoes to the show today. Svenja never thought or lived like she would race the best of the best on the big island, but that is precisely what she did a few weeks ago. Today, the three of them unpack her experience, unlikely backstory, and vision of the future. After winning a contest at work, she was given entry into Ironman 70.3 Mallorca. At the time, she didn't swim, she didn't bike, and sometimes she ran with her dog. But when race day showed up, so did Svenja. She claimed 2nd in her age group that day and qualified for the 70.3 World Championship, where she went on to win her age group. Over a decade later and a recent top 20 finish at the big dance on the big island, we can safely assume this woman was meant for triathlon. Let's start this post with massive namastes, and congrats to Jason for claiming the 2nd podium spot at the PTO US Open in Milwaukee, WI, this past weekend and putting down an insane run split over his competitors. Well done. We caught up with Jason at the beginning of his taper for this race, and he admits to feeling top-notch. As of July 31st, Jason is ranked 16th in the world and 3rd in the US according to the Professional Triathletes Organization, and if he keeps racing like he did last weekend, we're sure to see him climbing those ranks steadily. Jason started his triathlon career at sixteen and acquired a high level of mental toughness early on as his training consisted of one-speed, full gas. Jason continued to race through college, where he studied kinesiology and then headed to Boulder to pursue a triathlon career. And that leaves us where we stand now, an ever-emerging star in the sport of triathlon and an absolute threat to all his competitors on the run. We are so grateful to have shared this conversation with Jason and loved his energy and take on mindset. In this episode, we discuss: - Self-coaching with a close network of advisors - Working through nerves and challenging workouts - Having a strong work ethic - Early triathlon training plan - Learning how to mentally cope with suffering - Mindset training - Moving forward from poor race performances - Needing the contrast to strengthen our desire - Loving the process - Making money as a PRO - finding a way - The race that kept him going - Betting on yourself - Working with doubt and negative self-talk - Jason's exciting month of racing ahead Namaste- Jess
Tamara Jewett has become a prominent competitor since turning pro in 2019 and, just this year, threw everything into the basket of triathlon when she left her full-time career as a lawyer and went full-in to training and racing as a pro. Tamara kicked off the year with a win at the iconic Ironman 70.3 Oceanside, a season opener like no other known for its honest course and A-list competition. Competing alongside Paula Findlay and current Ironman world champion Chelsea Sodaro, Tamara was 4th out of the swim, 5th off the bike, and then took the win after throwing down a 1:13:00 half marathon. She placed 6th at the PTO European Open in early May and followed it up with 2nd at 70.3 ex-en-Provence a few weeks later. Tamara has a background in high-performance middle-distance track, and since turning to triathlon, she became the first woman to run under 74 minutes at a 70.3. Triathlete.com launched an article in April claiming that Tamara is becoming the most feared runner in triathlon. We have a feeling she will continue to blow our socks off, and we're so excited to dive into the story of this incredible athlete. In this episode, we discuss: - importance of days off for Tamara - healing around food and nutrition - brutal acceptance of the now - injury is not a pause in life - patience - leaving her career to go all in with professional triathlon - sleep for recovery - sifting through the noise - racing at the competitive edge of the sport - permission to have ups and downs - learning about your emotions to work through them - The dream Namaste- Jess

Today we are so grateful to be sitting in person with professional triathlete, coach, and scientist Isaac Diaz. Isaac's mission within his work in the world is to positively transform lives through sport and help bring humanity to a higher state of consciousness. He is an avid practitioner and teacher of pranayama, or exercises to control the breath. This powerful practice leads to the management of life force, which is the vibrant energy that moves our breath. He uses this discipline to increase vitality in the whole person, ultimately leading to optimal performance in sport and life. And like all authentic teachers, he is practicing what he teaches as he moves closer to his highest expression. Believing that we live in a universe of growth, Isaac is always looking for the next step, and this year he moved from elite age group athlete to the professional ranks. Last month, he placed 11th at Ironman 70.3 St. George in what he called a "nice breakthrough" performance, and only days ago, he announced that he will dial it up to the full distance in a few weeks at Ironman Couer d'Alene. When I got locked up in a two week's quarantine coming back from Argentina in March 2020 at the Aldiana Hotel in Cyprus and wasn't allowed to leave my hotel room, I used to hear someone go outside in the morning and come back after a while. I found out that my room neighbour was Yuliya Oleksandrivna Yelistratova, a Ukrainian professional triathlete, European U23 champion of the year 2009, Number 1 in the ITU ranking (women's standing) of the year 2009 with by far the highest “total number of races” (6), several times national champion in various categories and member of the Ukrainian national team. She competed at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. At this point the Tokyo summer Olympics were not cancelled yet and Yulyia was allowed to go running and swimming in the morning and she had her bicycle on the balcony of the hotel. We started talking and she actually came to me for a hypnotherapy session after we were released.I decided to get back in touch with Yuliya and find out how she and her family are doing and coping with this sad war situation. Tune in and find out.https://olympics.com/en/athletes/yuliya-yelistratova https://www.instagram.com/yuliyayelistratova/?hl=en
Welcome to Episode 58 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast! My guest today is Line Thams, a professional middle distance triathlete from Denmark who also holds a PhD in Sports Science. Line's athletic journey has been far from straightforward. She is a self-proclaimed “nerd” who had an intense fear of water and little interest in sports throughout much of her young life. She eventually forced herself to learn to swim as a teenager, and subsequently became an elite swimmer and triathlete. In her first IRONMAN 70.3 race, she qualified for the IM 70.3 World Championships and finished 19th at the Worlds a month later. She is a 5 time Danish Triathlon champion as well as the 2022 World Duathlon Champs silver medalist, with many other podiums under her belt. Recently, Line has been recovering from a major knee injury, right after finishing her PhD and finally being ready to go all in on her professional athletic career. This isn't her first set back with injury; she suffered a serious bike crash back in 2020 resulting in major facial injuries and not being able to eat solid foods for 8 weeks due to her jaw being wired. Additionally, her Mom suffered from a stroke and was in a coma for sixth months, and not long after that, her partner was diagnosed with cancer. Line has persisted through all of these incredibly difficult situations, and remains committed to discovering her athletic potential. She continues to rehab her running injury, is training hard on the bike and in the pool, and has an exciting career ahead of her. I loved getting to know her and hearing her nutrition story. She offered some great insights into how she fuels her training and competitions, as well as how she handles stress, recovery, and much more.Line - best of luck with your recovery, and thank you for inspiring us with your determination as well as your positive attitude! "Just because you're older doesn't mean you have to be slower." Some people have obvious superpowers. Others — like professional triathlete Dede Griesbauer — keep their superpowers closer to the chest. Dede recently gave a TEDxBoston talk about her own superpowers: persistence and determination. And in this conversation, she explains how receiving a "Persistence & Determination" award as an 8-year-old at summer camp helped her become the successful athlete she is today. Dede is 51 years old, and has been competing as a professional triathlete for the past 20 years. She started competing at a time when many pros are starting to think about transitioning out of the sport. That's never deterred her, though. Dede doesn't care that her competitors are often half her age. Because she is the one with persistence and determination. And she has the trophy case to show for it: Dede is a three-time Ironman champion, a three-time Top 10 finisher at Ironman Kona, and was the top American finisher in Kona twice. Her current favorite event: the Ultraman. Dede completed her first Ultraman event — a three-day, 320-mile event that includes a 10K swim and 91-mile bike ride on the first day, a 171-mile bike ride the second day, and a double marathon on the third day — in 22 hours, 48 minutes, and 31 seconds, smashing the world record by more than an hour. When she's not on the swim, bike, or run, Dede is a commentator for Ironman. She lives in Boulder, CO, with her husband, dogs, and scooter.
