In this episode, host Rick Prince chat with professional triathlete and coach, Matt Hanson. Matt is a six-time Ironman champion, and also a six-time Half Ironman champion. In 2024, Matt finished 5th overall in the Ironman Pro Series. As both an accomplished triathlete and triathlon coach… as well as a former professor of exercise physiology, there is perhaps no one better to discuss the evolution of triathlon training than Matt. In this podcast, Rick and Matt discuss many topics including how training has evolved over the years, how technology has played a role in this evolution and some common mistakes that triathletes make in their training. Questions covered in this podcast include:1. Could you tell us about your background, both academically and as a professional triathlete?2. Could you give an overview of how triathlon training has evolved over the years?3. Of the three sport disciplines, is there one that has evolved the most with respect to being triathlon-focused vs. training as a stand-alone sport discipline?4. You are also a coach, have you found that any athletes push back against a modern triathlon-focused program versus a more old-school triathlon program?5. What are some of the biggest changes in the sport with respect to training and racing from the days of Dave Scott to today?6. How has technology played a role in the modernization of triathlon training?7. There is a saying in bike racing “Train your weakness, race your strength.” Does this also hold true for triathlon? Meaning, do you overly focus on your weakest sport discipline, or do you focus on your strength?8. What are some of the biggest training mistakes that you see triathletes make with respect to their training?9. If you could give one piece of advice to our listeners with respect to triathlon training, what would it be?

As a kid, I hated sport, so I certainly don't come from a traditional background like some folks do, but I took up running at university and then, after injuring myself training for a marathon in 2022, I got back on my bike because I knew my mental health needed it.I'm a journalist by profession and have been fortunate to travel the world, but it's taken its toll, and now I work with newsrooms and other organisations to normalise conversations around wellbeing. I had a podcast myself for a while where we spoke with famous journalists about their mental health and the stories that had impacted them. In any case, if you are open to more guests speaking about their stories and mental health, I'd love to be on your podcast at some stage. It's my dream to inspire others to speak openly and also be a role model for women who may reach middle age and think they have lost sense of their own identity, and a role model to my kids too."You Can Follow us onYouTube - AMP GBInstagram @amp_1967Facebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Send us a textI realized that I have had many different motivations to train over the years. What keeps you sitting on the bike in sweaty discomfort? Send us a textWelcome along to another episode of AMP, on this episode we speak to Grant Paling, a triathlete of 11 years but relatively new to agegroup. Grant says"When I was a kid I had big dreams, like most kids do.Astronaut, actor, race car driver - the kind of dreams only an uninhibited child can conjure up, free to think of what might be.One of those dreams was to represent my country. Football, maybe athletics? I was inspired through watching my sporting heroes on tv. And thanks to my dad's love of sport, we watched a lot of it!Those days are now long gone, and I thought those dreams were left behind. When I started triathlon in 2013 I never dreamed of reaching any kind of heights, I just knew I loved it from day one.I played football for 26 years (much of which I spent chasing my first touch) and whilst I achieved some success, triathlon was different. Still part of a team, the amazing Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club, my other “family”, but now ultimately competing on my own - no team around to do it for me if I didn't perform. But I persevered, inspired by those around me doing incredible things and in 2024, at 41 years old, I travelled to Coimbra in Portugal donning the Great Britain tri suit for the very first time and achieving one of those lifelong dreams by racing in the Middle Distance team for British Triathlon in the European Age Group Championships.I followed that up by competing again for GB in the Standard distance at the European Champs in Vichy in September and despite a bike crash, finished 17th overall.I'm known for my epic race reports within Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club - I'd love to come on and share some of those experiences over the years and also to talk about how I reached new levels using an AI coaching app to prepare for stepping up to Age Group level, especially being time limited with 2 relatively young kids aged 5 and 7. Game changer!"we had a great chat about, how he juggles being a parent and triathlon and how he implements AI coaching in his training.please enjoy.you can find Grant on Instagram @GRANTPALINGYou Can Follow us onYouTube - AMP GBInstagram @amp_1967Facebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Send us a textWelcome along to another episode of the Agegroup Multisport Podcast. On this episode, we speak to Andy Holliday, Gb age group triathlete and duathlete.Andy states "Previously had done marathons and other running events and before that had done a lot of time trials and road races and mtb events.I started multisport at the London Duathlon in Richmond in 2018, and got a reasonable result, like I finished mid-pack but it was enough to raise the idea of what was possible. My brother was at this time competing in Ironman events and mentioned the age-group with British Tri. A bit of investigation and it seemed like a possibility. Next event was Oulton Park a qualifier. While I was outside of qual time I was close enough to start to think it was possible. Next up was Stockton Duathlon and on a grim day I bagged a spot on the age-group team. Then COVID hit and my event was repeatedly postponed before finally getting to compete at Aviles. That was a mental journey almost not going 2 weeks before as I believed I wasn't good enough etc. classic imposter stuff. First experience of AG team was amazing, loved the event the race the build up wandering around the town seeing other athletes in GB kit. This year I had qualified for Vichy in Standard Triathlon, got there in the best shape I had been in, super confident of being able to deliver a great performance. Unfortunately my race lasted less than 3 minutes due to a cold shock panic attack in the water. Really interesting about how this impacted me and rather than throwing me off has provided greater motivation to compete.Qualified again last year for Middle Distance and Standard Duathlon for the upcoming Pontevedra, also aiming for the cross duathlon qualification. The big goal is the Zofingen Long Distance in Sept 2025. Also maybe a half and marathon PB as well. Outside of triathlon I am a performance and leadership coach and work a lot with talking about how the mind impacts performance either positively or negatively and how to harness this."Really interesting to chat about his mental issues and how he has worked them through.hope you enjoy his journey.you can follow Andy on Instagram @andyholladay1you can vote for us using this link https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/shortlist-category/You Can Follow us onYouTube - AMP GB Instagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.
Send us a textOn our latest episode features Paul HaslamPaul says "I was born raised in Chesterfield. My sporting background started as a child where I was very keen on football and later in my teens, cricket, tennis & hockey, amongst other sports. I struggled to get in the school football team until I was about 14 when I finally started to grow & bulk up a bit & found myself able to muscle my way about a bit more. After school, I continued with sport at college, mainly squash and then found myself encouraged into joining the Dept water polo team as they were looking for new additions. Now that was an eye opener. My first game I only played the 2 nd half and I was absolutely knackered by the end, so much so, I slipped and slid from top to bottom on the stairs to the changing rooms. I thought squash was tough till I got involved in water polo – the toughest sport I've ever done. After college I ended up working in the coal mining industry. My sporting life was mainly darts around that time. I later joined a Sunday League type football team and also found myself involved in the works cricket team.Between the age of 28 and 58 any remotely sporting connections I had were limited to recreational activities with the kids such as mountain bike rides on trails, not roads.Over the 30 years my weight had gradually risen from below 11 stone and 32” waist to almost 15 stone and a near 40” waist. Then out of the blue in August 2018, Karen announced to me that she was going to do something called “Couch to 5k”. What the hell is that, I thought. Well I soon found out as I was seconded to a support role, which basically meant I was doing it too. My initial response was to say to Karen that I'd probably run about 50 yards and collapse. By May 2019, Id lost about 4.5 stone in weight.9th June 2019 finally arrived & that was the start of my triathlon pursuit. Southport Triathlon was only my 2nd Standard Triathlon and my first-ever qualifier. And so, the GB Age Group experience was about to begin in 2022 eventually named as in a place called Olsztyn in Poland. Having submitted a sprintresult for European and World Triathlon events, I also qualified for Montreal World Sprint Tri a as last gap spot for Munich Europeans Sprint Tri, which I had desperately wanted to do, for the trip to Munich, as city we came to fall in love with. For Olsztyn in May 2022 I managed to finish a totally unexpected 2nd place in the 60-64 Age Group.Since that very first event, I've gone on to do a total of 16 GB starts including mixed team relays, 4 events in 2022, 3 events in 2023 including another silver in the Europeans Standard Tri (converted to standard duathlon) and 9 events in 2024 including a silver in theEuropean Middle Distance Duahtlon in Alsdorf and 2 bronzes in the Europeans in Vichy. As mentioned in the show we have been nominated Finalist in the Sports Podcast Awards 2025 please vote using the link below.https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/shortlist-category/

Welcome to the Purple Patch podcast. In this week's episode, we'll be discussing the traits that deliver high performance. Our inspiration for this episode came from two sources. Firstly, the incredible achievement in the recent Tour de France, where Mark Cavendish clinched his 35th stage victory. His story embodies passion, joy, and perseverance despite facing numerous obstacles and setbacks. Following a serious injury last year, he made a remarkable comeback and secured a long-awaited win. The second catalyst was a question received by Matt from an athlete he coaches. This question stemmed from the athlete's observation of the Olympic swimming trials, with the Olympics right around the corner. Watching the returning athletes, many of whom were making their second or third Olympic appearance, left the athlete in awe and sparked thoughts about the mindset of a winner. These seasoned athletes seemed to possess remarkable toughness and composure. Given the stories of comebacks during this year's trials, the athlete wondered if there were lessons that everyday individuals could apply to their own lives. As it turns out, there are valuable insights to be gained. You don't have to be an elite athlete to draw inspiration from their mindset and the traits that contribute to their success. In this episode, we'll explore the mindset of high-performance individuals like Mark and discuss the traits that underpin their achievements. Drawing from over 20 years of experience working with elite athletes and organizational leaders, Matt has identified these traits and believes they can be cultivated and developed to enhance our performance in any area of focus. Welcome to the Purple Patch podcast. This week, our show focuses on performance. Purple Patch is a performance coaching organization, and IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon is well-known for coaching successful Ironman athletes and inspiring strong individual performances. Surprisingly, the backbone of his success has been the use of a team approach. Ironman is an extremely individual sport, but team and community have been essential to Purple Patch's sustained success over the last two decades. In this week's episode, Matt discusses the power and importance of a team approach for individual performance success. He uses a recent Purple Patch training camp in South Carolina as proof of concept. Despite the attendees being vastly different athletically and having individual goals, they came together in just a few short days, created a shared purpose, and emerged as a high-performing team. Matt shares his key takeaways from the training camp and his years of coaching experience to highlight the elements of teamwork that lead to improved individual performance. We believe you can extract lessons from this story for your journey, whether you aim to improve individual performance in sports, organizational leadership, or any other focus. Balancing family life and rigorous training is no easy feat, but racing close to home offers unique flexibility and greater involvement with loved ones. Reflecting on the Chattanooga 70.3, we share how family commitments, like my daughter's dance recital, influenced our choices and how a home training setup kept us on track. The journey wasn't just about physical preparation but also navigating the planning and personal growth that came with it. Facing a significant setback with a bike accident in 2022, I had to rethink my training strategy for Ironman Chattanooga. We turned the focus to volume targets and resumed swimming after a lengthy hiatus. Our conversation highlights the combo of midweek intervals, sweet spot sessions, and efficient indoor rides to prepare for race day, demonstrating resilience and strategic adaptation in the face of adversity. Ironman Chattanooga presented its unique set of challenges, from steep climbs to managing resources under hot conditions. We discuss the competitive nature of the event, the importance of course familiarity, and dealing with unexpected race day scenarios. The episode also underscores strategic analysis and mental toughness, transitioning from personal bests to tactical decisions aimed at higher placements, and how various course characteristics demand specific skills and tactics for success.
We are six months into the year and hopefully in a better position than when we started. Now is the time to look up, find that buoy of progress, take a breath, and realign ourselves before moving forward. This week on the Purple Patch podcast, we REWIND and revisit an important episode about assessing your performance so far and redefining your goals as we enter the second half of the year. At the beginning of the year, we took time to reflect, plan for the future and set Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs). Now, we have reached the halfway point of the year. Most of you hit the ground running with ambitions and lofty goals, but how did they pan out? Are you nailing your goals? Are you thriving in your performance journey? Is it fulfilling? Where can you improve or shift your approach? It is essential to come up for air midway through the season and execute some big-picture thinking about the work you have been putting in, the purpose of it, and where you want it to take you. On this week's episode of The Purple Patch Podcast, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon presents a framework to help you evaluate your progress and performance over the past six months to set yourself up for a strong finish to the year. Matt lays out a process for identifying the areas within your control where you have excelled, the lessons you have learned, and opportunities for improvement, to help you develop a plan of action to enhance future performance. Matt's framework centers on three questions that all athletes should consider asking themselves. Do you only have a destination or do you have a path? Is your current approach or program integrated into life? Am I getting athletically smarter? This episode is an opportunity to pause and reflect on the purpose of your athletic journey and strip down the elements of your process to determine what works, what doesn't, and what you plan to do about it. Welcome to the Purple Patch podcast. This week we continue our series on Purple Patch Case Studies, where we hear first-hand experiences of time-starved athletes on their journey towards improved performance in sports and life. This week, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon welcomes Purple Patch athlete Ben Cooper to the show. Like most Purple Patch athletes, Ben has a lot on his plate. He is a managing director at a major real estate company based in London, and he is also a devoted father of a three-year-old. Despite his busy schedule, he juggles all his responsibilities while dealing with weekly travel obligations. Ben's life is complex and time-starved, but he is determined to make it all work. Two years ago, when Ben was first introduced to Matt and Purple Patch Fitness, he struggled. Ben was dealing with exhaustion, burnout, and mental health challenges stemming from the stress of having a child during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many people at the time, he felt lost and overwhelmed. A former rugby player, Ben had lost his fitness, gained weight, had low energy, had terrible sleep, and had no idea how to break free from the negative cycle he was stuck in. In Ben's own words, he was surviving, not thriving. Ben discusses his challenges in jumpstarting his athletic journey and the strategies he learned through his coaching relationship with Matt to incorporate movement into his daily routine. Ben and Matt discuss the profound impact this had on shifting Ben's mindset, ultimately leading him to happiness, control, improved health, and high performance in all areas of his life. Ben's story is full of inspiration, perspective, and valuable lessons we can all apply to our lives. We hope that Ben's story motivates you to overcome any challenges you may face and take the initial steps toward achieving high performance in your athletic journey. Welcome to the Purple Patch podcast! A few weeks ago, we began a special series on case studies of Purple Patch athletes. In this series, we share their stories and insights to help you learn how they have benefited from the Purple Patch methodology. Our goal is to help you understand how this methodology and mindset can facilitate better performance in your own life. Our first athlete in this series was Mike Kane. Mike initially focused solely on fitness, but with some guidance, shifted his perspective towards health and habits and unlocked effectiveness in his training and how he showed up as a leader. This week, we are excited to welcome two Purple Patch athletes, Jeff Lipschultz and Marcel Lopez. They both have inspiring stories to share about how they used sports to improve their lives, shift their perspectives, and achieve better results. Jeff's story is about his journey from a childhood that didn't include many sports to using sports to enrich his community. He talks about the lessons he learned from other athletes and how the squad mentality and global network of support have amplified all aspects of his life. Marcel's story centers on an evolution of approach and mindset. Obsessed with data, Marcel's misguided approach inspired punishing training sessions and an unequal return on investment for his efforts. He discusses the change of perspective and the simple changes to his training habits that have yielded unexpected results. Jeff and Marcel's stories are compelling and offer valuable lessons to help you enhance your performance in sports or life and achieve better results in any endeavor you pursue.
