In 2020, Emily Mendenhall drove from Washington, DC to Okoboji, Iowa, a town of 800 that swells to 200,000 every summer, and walked into a pandemic that looked nothing like the one dominating national headlines. Inside gas stations and bars, masks marked you as an outsider. In one stop, a man told her family they would not be served if they kept theirs on. Her 6 year old daughter cried, confused. Mendenhall, a medical anthropologist at Georgetown University, did what she always does. She started asking questions. Over months, she interviewed neighbors, former classmates, and local officials, including her own brother in law who helped lead the local COVID response. The result became Unmasked, a case study in how community identity, economics, and politics shaped public health decisions in real time. That work led directly into her latest book, Invisible Illness: A History, from Hysteria to Long COVID, where she tracks a much older problem. Patients with chronic illness, especially women, often fail to meet medicine's demand for proof. Without a clear diagnosis, they lose access to care, insurance coverage, and legitimacy. Mendenhall argues that long COVID did not create this failure. It exposed it.This conversation centers on how healthcare systems reward certainty and punish complexity. Long COVID clinics send patients to 17 specialists without resolution. Insurance structures require diagnoses that many conditions cannot provide. Medical training still struggles to integrate trauma, mental health, and chronic disease into a coherent model of care.Mendenhall brings lived experience into the conversation. After COVID, she dealt with months of fatigue and escalating anxiety that altered her baseline health. She does not claim the label of long COVID, but she understands how quickly the system becomes harder to navigate once symptoms stop fitting clean categories. The stakes are not theoretical. In the United States, access to healthcare, disability benefits, and treatment still depends on whether a condition can be measured, coded, and reimbursed. For millions living with invisible illness, the burden of proof becomes the illness itself.RELATED LINKSEmily MendenhallInvisible Illness: A History, from Hysteria to Long COVIDScience PoliticsGeorgetown UniversityFEEDBACKLike this episode? If you've ever been dismissed by a doctor, told your symptoms were stress or anxiety, or felt like the medical system wasn't built for people like you — this episode traces exactly how we got here. The history of "hysteria" didn't end; it evolved, and understanding that history might be one of the most validating things you do for yourself today. In this episode, you'll hear from Emily Mendenhall, medical anthropologist, Guggenheim Fellow, and author of Invisible Illness: A History from Hysteria to Long COVID. Her concept of structural silencing reframes medical dismissal not as individual doctors failing patients, but as a system operating exactly as it was designed.Connect with Destiny: Instagram / Facebook / Website______________________________

Corporate America didn’t “go woke” overnight—it was pushed there through ESG and DEI mandates driven by powerful asset managers, proxy advisors, and activist investors. In this episode of Main Street Matters, Elaine Parker of the Job Creators Network is joined by Allen Mendenhall, Senior Advisor for the Free Enterprise Initiative at the Heritage Foundation. Mendenhall breaks down what ESG and DEI really mean, how the shift from shareholder capitalism to stakeholder governance reshaped corporate decision-making, and why non-financial political standards began overriding profit, performance, and fiduciary duty. The conversation explores how large asset managers and proxy firms exert massive influence over corporate boards—often pushing companies into cultural battles that alienate customers and hurt long-term value. The episode also dives into Heritage’s groundbreaking strategy to flip the script—using the same shareholder tools once weaponized by ESG activists to restore corporate neutrality, protect investors, and refocus companies on profitability and lawful governance. Mendenhall explains how shareholder engagement, proposal withdrawals, and behind-the-scenes negotiations are already changing corporate behavior across major brands.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Inspired by her work with long COVID patients, in Invisible Illness: A History, from Hysteria to Long COVID (U California Press, 2026) medical anthropologist Dr. Emily Mendenhall traces the story of complex chronic conditions to show why both research and practice fail so many. Mendenhall points out disconnects between the reality of chronic disease—which typically involves multiple intersecting problems resulting in unique, individualized illness—and the assumptions of medical providers, who behave as though chronic diseases have uniform effects for everyone. And while invisible illnesses have historically been associated with white middle-class women, being believed that you are sick is even more difficult for patients whose social identities and lived experiences may not align with dominant medical thought. Weaving together cultural history with intimate interviews, Invisible Illness upholds the experiences of those living with complex illness to expose the failures of the American healthcare system—and how we can do better. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. “Divine Intervention: The Truck Stop Serial Killer” In this gripping episode of Off The Record: On The Air, retired Nashville cold case detective Pat Postiglione recounts one of the most chilling cases of his storied career — the capture and conviction of a long-haul truck driver whose highway routes concealed a cross-country trail of murder. Postiglione takes listeners back to July 2007, when what began as a routine homicide investigation at a Nashville truck stop unraveled into the shocking discovery of a serial killer hiding in plain sight. Through tense, moment-by-moment storytelling, he describes the crucial decision to revisit the crime scene, the eerie encounter with the suspect's yellow cab, and the discovery that would stop the killer's spree for good. Listeners will hear how meticulous detective work, instinct, and perhaps a stroke of divine intervention led to the arrest of a man whose truck held the DNA of multiple victims. Pistiglian reveals never-before-heard details of the investigation — from the suspect's disturbing confessions and chilling methods to his later convictions across multiple states. This episode dives deep into the psychology of evil, the evolution of forensic technology, and the human cost of uncovering the truth. It's a raw, haunting, and unforgettable look at justice on the open road — and the detective who refused to let a killer slip away.

As corporate influence grows, Kate outlines how OFA is working to ensure the organic label still reflects its original values and that farmer voices are always at the forefront.https://realorganicproject.org/kate-mendenhall-defending-organic-integrity-nationwide-227Kate Mendenhall is the Executive Director of the Organic Farmers Association, whose aim is to "provide a strong and unified national voice for domestic certified organic producers." An Iowa native, Kate has returned to her home state to pursue this work, while also operating a small, diversified farm alongside her family. Kate was formerly the ED of NOFA-NY and as she describes in this interview, has traveled extensively around the globe to learn the craft of organic farming. The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/directoryWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/
America Out Loud PULSE with Dr. Mary Talley Bowden – The stakes are immense. Mendenhall estimates the vaccine may have caused approximately 3 million disabilities and 500,000–600,000 deaths in the U.S. The trial's data integrity is further questioned, as only 170 participants' data, out of an initial 43,000, were used for approval, suggesting possible manipulation...
