A few weeks ago we celebrated the exciting news of “Traditional Sake Brewing with Koji” being listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (if you missed it you can find out more here) and in this episode, we decided to dive deeper into the world of koji as we had the immense pleasure of interviewing Higuchi Koichi, owner of Higuchi Matsunosuke Shoten Co., Ltd. and one of the experts in koji starter manufacturing in Japan! So join us as our regular hosts Rebekah Wilson-Lye, John Gauntner, and Arline Lyons sit down at our base, the Japan Sake and Shochu Information Center with Higuchi Koichi to dive into the fascinating world of koji—the mold at the heart of Japanese fermentation culture. Learn more about what koji is, as Higuchi breaks down the different types of koji (yellow, white, black) and their unique roles in sake brewing, miso, shoyu, and other fermented foods. He also shares his journey into the koji industry and a behind-the-scenes look at the production process, the types of koji his company produces, and some of his ongoing projects in the world of fermentation. Although many of them are rather secret, he was able to share some details about a recent collaboration with Kewpie (possibly the best-selling Japanese brand of mayonnaise in Japan) and how he is creating “egg koji” for them on a quest to bring more umami to their products… For anyone curious about Koichi Higuchi and his company Higuchi Matsunosuke Shoten Co., Ltd., you can find more information here and if you would love to learn more about Koji and how it is used in Sake brewing check out our “Episode-23: Koji Basics” to get started. How does this 2023 film, which is set in post-WWII Japan, explore the complex emotions of its main character, Koichi, as he deals with survivor's guilt? How does he compound the shame he has for having been too afraid to undertake his kamikaze mission in the late days of the war? When he and his unit are attacked by Godzilla why does he fail to carry out his part of the counterattack? How does the film portray post war Tokyo, and Koichi's relationship with survivor Noriko and the orphaned child, Akiko, who she cares for? How does her action to save Koichi's life during Godzilla's attack on her home town compound his survivor's guilt? Do elements of the film amount to a critique of Imperial Japanese attitudes toward life and death? How does the film portray comradery between Koichi and the men he works with as they clear mines, and later, confront the mutated Godzilla? What is symbolized when Koichi flies a modified jet aircraft into Godzilla's mouth, and ejects before the explosion? What does Sosaku's provision of an ejection seat symbolize? Is the film a conservative political statement of some sort? Why does the film have the Americans stepping back from confronting Godzilla? Do Godzilla movies symbolize Japanese feelings about the country's Imperial past, along with the more obvious inspiration derived from Allied use of atomic weapons?

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 31, 2024 is: expiate EK-spee-ayt verb Expiate is a formal word that typically means “to atone or make amends for something, such as a sin or offense.” // Although the editorial had characterized the mayor's failure to disclose the details of the meeting as a lapse that could not be expiated, many of the city's citizens seemed ready to forgive all. See the entry > Examples: “Godzilla has long been seen as a symbolic representation of the nuclear devastation that Japan suffered, and that theme is evident here as well. But Godzilla Minus One adds a more personal dimension in the form of Koichi's lingering trauma; the only way he thinks he'll be able to expiate his guilt is by destroying the monster.” — Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter, 1 Dec. 2023 Did you know? If you need to expiate something—that is, to atone for it—it's sure to be something you recognize you shouldn't have done. People expiate crimes, sins, transgressions, and the like in various ways, such as by apologizing or trying to undo damage they've caused. The word comes from the Latin verb expiare (“to atone for”), a combination of ex- and piare, which itself means “to atone for” as well as “to appease.” (Piare comes from pius, meaning “faithful, pious.”) The current use of expiate dates to the early 1600s, and in the early 1500s expiate could mean something else entirely: “to put an end to.” Shakespeare used it this way in Sonnet 22: “But when in thee time's furrows I behold, / Then look I death my days should expiate.” Later, expiate was a synonym of avert, as in this biblical prophecy: “Disaster shall fall upon you, which you will not be able to expiate” (Isaiah 47:11, RSV). Vestiges of these literary uses still cling to the word, which is most often found in formal, quasi-literary contexts.

In recent years there have been a handful of new Godzilla movies produced in America. But Godzilla Minus One was made in Japan, where the franchise started, and its story brings audiences back to the genesis of the monster: the aftermath of World War II. Godzilla Minus One focuses on Koichi Shikishima, a kamikaze pilot who, after opting not to fulfill his military responsibility, returns to his home in Tokyo. After learning his parents died in the bombing of Tokyo, Koichi meets Noriko, a young woman who is taking care of an orphan child named Akiko. Together they try to start a new life and leave the life of war behind them. That is, until Godzilla emerges and threatens the lives of the Japanese people. ATMI producers Isaiah Hernandez, Logan Ehrhart, and Ormund Alaois sat down to talk about this new Godzilla film, its unique focus on its human characters, how it compares to other Godzilla movies, and much more. Hosted by Jordan Kehl. Music by Kendrick Whiteman. Many thanks to supporters of our podcast, including the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Listen to us talk about possibly the greatest monster franchise ever, and how it just keeps getting better. Synopsis Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One follows the story of Koichi (played by Kamiki Ryunosuke), a kamikaze pilot at the end of WWII who didn't wanna go full kamikaze so he says that his plane is faulty and lands on Odo Island for repairs. Once there, a baby Godzilla arrives and decimates everyone, except for Koichi and Tachibana, the head repairman. Koichi eventually makes it back to his home in Tokyo to find that his parents are dead and Tokyo has been almost flattened by the war. Koichi encounters a girl named Noriko (played by Minami Hamabe) and she latches onto him for support for her and the baby she is carrying, and they become a happy family. A couple years later, Godzilla comes back, bigger and better than ever. Will Koichi defeat the monster? You'll have to wait and see! Review of Godzilla Minus One This movie has it all. It had me laughing, crying, shocked, upset, and enthralled. To bounce from hard hitting emotional scenes to incredibly jarring and crazy action scenes and have it effortlessly flow is extremely difficult, yet director Yamazaki did it seamlessly. It was a wonderful movie that depicts Japan's ruin and rebuilding after WWII, and how the war never left anyone's minds even for a second. Oh, and Godzilla was absolutely killer. I have never seen another Godzilla movie in full before, but I can tell that they went back to the basics and kept what worked from the original and newer films. From the score, to the visual effects, to the character building, it was absolutely flawless. The Japanese invented Godzilla, it's only right that they are the best at making films about it. Score 10/10
70 years into the Godzilla franchise, it seems improbable the best installment, of which there are 38, would end up being the newest, but stranger things have happened. GODZILLA MINUS ONE sees a post-WWII Japan stumbling towards survival. It's not enough to sustain a thankless war and nuclear fallout, but now, a giant radiation-breathing lizard? If framed this way, it almost reads like a cruel joke, but for people like failed kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), it's all too real, a scene on a spiritual loop bathed in trauma and socially-imposed guilt. You'd then think the movie would follow the MOBY DICK route of having Koichi go through hell and back to kill this creature, to redeem himself in the eyes of his country's leaders and personal shame, but what GODZILLA MINUS ONE avoids is the notion that one is only responsible to their trauma. Sure, he's gonna carry the wounds of the past forever, but life doesn't amount to an endless self-flagellation. There's way more to enjoy under the sun than can ever be numerated or experienced. For a film whose genre's defined by its level of destruction and explosive, monstrous action to firmly plant its flag in the side of hope and revival is a necessary breath of balance and grace. Did the lizard chomp boats like chew toys? Yep. Did I also find myself crying at the end? You bet your ass. It's a great time to be a Godzilla fan. ------------------------------------------------------------------Follow Daniel on - Twitter: TheMovies_Pod Bluesky: themovies.bsky.social Instagram: themoviespod ------------------------------------------------------------------ Music: "Take Me Home" - Sophie Ellis-Bextor (Hi, Resa!) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

Byrd, Matt, Kevin, Lux, Trev, and Tom assemble for a sprawling mega-sized, in depth review of Godzilla Minus One. Toho's latest entry in the franchise is a reboot taking place in the 1940s, as Japan rebuilds after World War 2. It follows Koichi, a former kamikaze pilot with survivor's guilt and PTSD as he struggles to find his lot in life and confront his trauma, as the H-Bomb mutated dinosaur called Godzilla emerges and devastates Japan. Our kaiju-sized crew of hosts discuss their feelings on every aspect of the film, as well as our varied interpretations of the subtext and themes within it. So what did we think? Relax and find out! But first we also give our thoughts on the new trailer for the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire!
Kaiju monsters (also known as dinosaur sized beasts) have been a staple subgenre in the horror movie filmography all the way back to KING KONG (1933). After World War II, the Japanese giant monster movie GODZILLA (1954) appeared and started a franchise that has lasted for almost seventy years. Toho, the studio that brought us Godzilla, has released their latest in the franchise, GODZILLA MINUS ONE (2023).Kamikaze pilot Koichi (Ryunosuke Kamiki) survives the war only to return to Tokyo and finding it in ruins. Trying to survive like the rest of post war Japan, he befriends a young woman, Noriko (Minami Hamabe), and the two along with an orphaned baby girl create a hodge-podge family. Koichi gets a job clearing sea mines. While working with his crew, Godzilla appears and endangers all of Tokyo. The movie is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki. With a budget of $15M USD, the film has gone on to triple its profit. Some reviewers have stated this may be the best Godzilla movie ever made. Your podcast co-hosts take a look at this latest release in the classic franchise and give their thoughts.
Knowing others is a fundamental part of our human experience... But it is also an impossible task. And while empathy brings us closer to understanding this ‘otherness', it still maintains a quality of difference –that those we empathize with are inherently distinct from ourselves. But perhaps there is a space within our minds where we can understand each other simply as we are, or once were, before we shaped our own journeys – as equals, as solely human. This place, where all humanity is shared, is what Koichi Togashi refers to as 'The Psychoanalytic Zero'. In this episode of The Art of Listening, Koichi recalls his journey into the field of Psychoanalysis. He tells us how he learned to balance Eastern and Western perspectives between Japan, his native country, and New York, his adopted city. Koichi also describes how his own quest for acceptance and understanding fueled his need to create his own theory. Together, we learn how the ‘Psychoanalytic Zero' considers the complexities of division and difference while uncovering the underlying threads that bind us all together in the tapestry of the universe.Chapters1 - Finding balance between Eastern and Western practices (4:07)2 - The relationship between trauma, empathy and the Psychoanalytic Zero (13:35)3 - In practice: the Psychoanalytic Zero as a philosophy (18:30)4 - Difference in practice and approaches to trauma in Japan (22:22)5 - Makoto: the potential of letting go (28:25)LinksKoichi TogashiKoichi's BooksEileen DunnMore from ‘The Art of Listening'

Like most organizations, intellectual property offices (IPOs) have faced significant challenges in recent years. From the pandemic to financial market turmoil, through supply chain issues, to increased cyberthreats, IPOs have had to navigate these hurdles and more, stretching their budget, information technology, and organizational resources in unexpected ways. Yet, IP registrations have been soaring globally, and IPOs generally seem to have been riding those waves with success, often transforming challenges into opportunities to evolve and better meet the needs of creators, businesses, and the market.Beyond their role as processors of IP applications and registrations or an inventory of registered assets, how do IPOs envision their mission in 2023. What sort of initiatives do they carry out to ensure they stay in tune with innovators, businesses big and small, and the market at large? How much of a transformative force can they be for the IP world? Our guest today is Hamano Koichi, the Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO). Appointed in July 2022, he manages JPO operations and oversees Japan's policy on patents, trademarks, and design rights. Prior to chairing JPO, Mr. Hamano has served in a wide range of senior roles at the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), including as Director of the Finance Division, Business Environment Department; Counselor for Energy Policy; Executive Vice President and Advisor of Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC); and Director-General of the Regional Economic and Industrial Policy Group, among others.Brand & New is a production of the International Trademark AssociationHosted by Audrey Dauvet - Contribution of M.
