In episode #93 in June of 2024 we met Dr. Vamsi Chavakula for a discussion on MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound. Now we're back with part 2. The Kumano Kodo – Victory Over Parkinson's trek number six. The team of 16, five with Parkinson's, arrived in Japan and spent today exploring Tokyo. While wandering some of the parks and gardens of Tokyo we caught up with Tess Lesniewski. Tess was on the Victory Over Parkinson's Machu Picchu trek in 2016 and her mom, Elena Bertron, is on the Japan trek and is one of the participants in the Aspen Neuroscience cell replacement trial for Parkinson's. "Power Over Parkinson's" international trek number six! Nurse Practitioner Sherrie Gould has, over the past 14 years, led people with Parkinson's on fundraising treks to Kilimanjaro, Mt. Everest Base Camp, Machu Picchu, The Camino de Santiago, the Dolomites, and now, coming up in May 2024, the Kumano Kodo in Japan. The 6th World Parkinson's Congress wrapped up a few days ago in Barcelona and as we all return to our lives in San Diego we caught up with Nurse Practitioner Sherrie Gould to get her thoughts on being together with thousands of people all living with Parkinson's or trying to find a way to make living with Parkinson's easier. Meet Matt Soto, the director of the San Diego State University Adaptive Fitness Clinic.Serving those with minor to severe disabilities, the SDSU Adaptive Fitness Clinic is a community outreach program through the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University. Founded in 1983, the Fitness Clinic serves those from the San Diego region with a wide variety of physical disabilities and offers them the opportunity to reach their fitness and exercise goals. A place is provided which allows clients to develop management skills for their disabilities. Clients' ages have ranged from 2 to 98 years.The fitness clinic also serves as an educational experience for SDSU Kinesiology students, including those majoring in prephysical therapy, athletic training, and fitness specialist. The 2022 Power Over Parkinson's Dolomite Mountain Trek in Italy is over, but the hikes and events of that week will stay with all of us for a lifetime. I had the most incredible experience hiking for the week with Alex Trepte, one of the four people on the trek with Parkinson's.Alex has this thing – he runs at the end of every hike. Day 1 of the Power Over Parkinson's Dolomites Trek is in the books. 20 km/about 12.5 miles and 3600 feet of vertical gain, this was a tough hike for anyone regardless of Parkinson's.
