If you’ve ever found yourself wide awake at 3am with a racing mind or drenched from a night sweat, you’re not alone. Up to half of women in perimenopause and menopause experience disrupted sleep – and it can affect everything from your mood and memory to your relationships and quality of life. In this episode of Thriving in Menopause, we talk to Dr Giselle Withers, a clinical psychologist and founder of A Mindful Way. Giselle specialises in helping people reclaim restful nights through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and mindfulness – both proven, evidence-based treatments that work without relying on medication. She explains why hormonal shifts, stress and “busy-brain syndrome” create the perfect storm for poor sleep, and how CBT-I – particularly when combined with mindfulness practices – can retrain your mind and body to sleep soundly again. This listener Q&A episode tackles the most common fasting challenges with evidence-based solutions, addressing Monica's self-sabotage pattern after reaching new low weights by explaining the body's three-pronged defense system (defend phase preventing further loss, restore phase increasing regain rate, and prevent phase reducing future weight loss probability) that creates powerful physiological resistance requiring equally comprehensive counter-strategies. The hosts reveal how metabolic adaptation activates during weight loss like a toddler throwing a tantrum, making the body fight harder at new weight thresholds, while providing practical "when-then planning" to manage the slippery slope of increased hunger and reduced willpower that emerges from dopamine deficits caused by sleep disruption and stress. They address Emily's two-week plateau after losing seven pounds initially with 20:4 fasting, explaining the critical distinction between water weight loss from glycogen depletion versus true fat loss, recommending the Blueprint to Fasting for Fat Loss resource and strategic window timing adjustments to restart momentum. Patty's wine consumption question during OMAD receives honest analysis of alcohol's metabolic priority over fat burning, sleep disruption effects reducing next-day metabolic efficiency, and dose-dependent impact on hormones especially for postmenopausal women, with recommendations to shift from daily to occasional consumption strategically timed for better recovery. The episode covers supplement timing during fasting windows (berberine, creatine recommended daily for consistency despite potential stomach sensitivity), addresses sleep disturbances from excessive 48-hour fasting during maintenance (recommending 24-36 hour alternatives to protect sleep quality over marginal metabolic gains), and explains post-meal walking benefits for glucose management through skeletal muscle uptake and improved insulin sensitivity, even when continuous glucose monitors show delayed rather than reduced spikes. Throughout, Scott and Tommy emphasize viewing fat loss and maintenance as a continuum rather than separate phases, building sustainable habits during weight loss that seamlessly transition to lifelong maintenance, positioning their upcoming pre-Thanksgiving seven-day challenge as strategically timed to establish momentum before the holiday season while reinforcing that successful fasting integration requires addressing foundational lifestyle factors of stress, sleep, food relationships, and mindset alongside fasting schedules. Take the NEW FASTING PERSONA QUIZ! - The Key to Unlocking Sustainable Weight Loss With Fasting! Resources and Downloads: SIGN UP FOR THE DROP OF THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL GRAB THE OPTIMAL RANGES FOR LAB WORK HERE! - NEW RESOURCE! FREE RESOURCE - DOWNLOAD THE NEW BLUEPRINT TO FASTING FOR FAT LOSS! SLEEP GUIDE DIRECT DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD THE FASTING TRANSFORMATION JOURNAL HERE! Partner Links: Get your FREE BOX OF LMNT hydration support for the perfect electrolyte balance for your fasting lifestyle with your first purchase here! Get 25% off a Keto-Mojo blood glucose and ketone monitor (discount shown at checkout)! Click here! Our Community: Let's continue the conversation. Solving sleep issues may have just gotten easier with today's guest sharing her personal experience with CBD to help with Perimenopause Symptoms.  My guest today is a Flipping 50 community member who listened to a podcast and decided herself to try CBD when nothing she had been doing was working.    My Guest: Laura Scott is a former banker and corporate trainer who left the business world and dedicated her time raising her children. Over the past four years she cared for her parents as they rapidly declined at the same time perimenopause came knocking at her door. As her symptoms increased, she was deeply saddened and angered by the hopeless messaging around here that aging is a curse.  Laura researched, overhauled her diet and healed many of her symptoms through nutrition. This week's podcast episode is an insightful interview with Lisa Li, the founder of The Qi, a company dedicated to flower teas. Conducted in a serene New York City space, the discussion explores Lisa's personal health journey—from a challenging thyroid disease that was healed through Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to her subsequent decision to create naturally caffeine-free herbal teas due to her sensitivity to caffeine.  She highlights the medicinal properties and energetic balance of various flower teas, such as goji berries, chrysanthemum, and rose, explaining their roles as anti-inflammatory, detoxing, and nourishing agents. The interview delves into the philosophies of Eastern culinary traditions, emphasizing "light and gentle" flavors that support digestive health, contrasting them with Western preferences for "extra" flavors. A significant part of the conversation focuses on the importance of self-care and evening rituals for better sleep, advocating for herbal teas as a healthy alternative to addictive sleeping aids. Lisa also introduces several of The Qi's specific tea blends, explaining their benefits, ingredients, and the careful formulation process guided by TCM principles.  Check out the show notes at https://thisismodernaging.com/podcast/ ABOUT LISA As a child who grew up Northeast of Beijing, I drank a lot of teas with my grandma. And those moments were some of the most nourishing and healing times of my life. Holistic wellness for me as a child was much like brunch… it was simply a way of a joyful life. After feeling stressed, anxious, and burnt out from working in the notoriously grueling fashion industry for 10+ years I desperately wanted to go back to a time and place where taking care of myself was simple and wonderful. In the beginning of 2018 I took a transformative trip with my mom to Shangri-la, Yunnan where I discovered the Rose tea the locals enjoy. It was so unique and special - it was like nothing I've ever had, it transported me to a whole new floral paradise universe.  After tasting and testing over 100 flowering herbs and tens of thousands miles more traveled to source the finest ones The Qi was born. To bring you the most beautiful sensory tea ritual for a daily dose of Zen, beauty, and nourishment.

Abi's story stopped me in my tracks when she reached out and shared it with me. I had never heard someone healing quite like her son.He was covered in strange bumps, couldn't sleep, and was the pickiest eater. She spent thousands of dollars on appointments and herbs from a naturopath, hoping something would finally work. But nothing brought true healing. She eventually couldn't afford to keep working with this naturopath and that's when she found ōNLē on Instagram. She immediately said yes to the Rebalance Kit before she even finished scrolling the page, and never looked back. What happened next is something every mama deserves to witness. Her son began to eat again. Sleep through the night. The rage and overwhelm she had quietly been carrying melted away. ANTRA GETZOFF & MARIA ENSEBELLA discuss the healing power of cryotherapy and their new book, “Reinventing Cool: How to Make COLD Your Best Ally Against Inflammation, Pain and Aging,” in which they  explain the science behind why modern-day whole-body cryotherapy is not like ‘an ice bath on steroids' and just why it really is the best option for your health.   Antra Getzoff, born and schooled in Latvia, has been a cryotherapy & wellness entrepreneur for more than 13 years of her diverse career in business.   Like most cryotherapy aficionados, she first discovered the power of cold on her own body, finding stress relief, energy boost and sleep improvement in the difficult times of running a 250-people company through the 2008 financial crisis.   In 2018, Antra founded the International Alliance for Cryotherapy Professionals (CryoProsUnited) – an industry-unifying resource and training platform and community that soon grew to several thousand members worldwide. Reborn into GetResultsCo, her company keeps educating cryotherapy providers and promoting the best practices in the industry. She is also a Vice-Chair of the Global Wellness Institute Cryotherapy Initiative.   Maria Ensabella had always had a keen eye for health and fitness; actually, more aesthetics and fitness than health. Weight training, marathons, yoga, boxing etc.   At the heart of her journey was the amazing concept of Cryotherapy, the centerpiece of her life, and the backbone of her health optimisation and wealth accumulation.   While visiting New York City, Maria was introduced to Whole Body Cryotherapy and decided to research it and try out a session; it felt amazing, like a million bucks. The positive experience with Cryotherapy led to trying further sessions in Melbourne and Sydney, again resulting in amazing results, Maria felt like she was walking on air. So, upon her return to London, she was disappointed to discover that this renewing therapy was simply not accessible. She immediately quit her job and decided to establish a clinic where others could enjoy the numerous benefits of this rejuvenating therapy. It was a huge risk, but one worth taking and so, LondonCryo was born.   In their book they also describes unique client case studies and little-known scientific research.

NeuroNoodle Neurofeedback and Neuropsychology

Join Jay Gunkelman, QEEGD (the man who has analyzed over 500,000 brain scans), and host Pete Jansons for another brainy, candid, and insight-filled episode of the NeuroNoodle Neurofeedback Podcast. This week, they unpack the wild world of sleep—from why squeak matters in EEGs to what your Ambien prescription might be doing to your brain.✅ Sleep Issues & EEG Clarity: Jay shares how poor sleep and vigilance regulation can cloud EEG readings—and why knowing someone's sleep state is critical before diving into neurofeedback.✅ Should Everyone Get a Sleep Study First? Jay explains what full sleep lab testing shows (versus home screeners), and when tracking devices like Fitbits or Actigraphs are worth the investment.✅ Ambien & Benzos Breakdown: Learn why these meds may give you unconsciousness—not real rest—and how withdrawal from long-term use can cause intense overarousal and even seizures.✅ Brain "Squeak" & Creativity Surges: Ever feel sharper right after a nap? Jay breaks down why bursts of creativity happen when waking up and the real neuroscience behind your “aha!” moments.✅ Nap vs Full Night Sleep Debate: Is Edison-style power napping a myth or a strategy? Jay and Pete explore whether multiple naps can replace a full night's rest.✅ Memory Tricks While You Sleep: From punching pillows to playing audiobooks, Jay dives into the science (and some of the myths) behind learning during sleep.✅Key Moments:0:00:24 Show Start0:32 Neurofeedback Q/A Show https://youtube.com/live/IfkxWR6jq0s0:55 Sleep Issues4:22 Should everyone get a sleep study done before they do EEG or Neurofeedback?8:30 Can you tell on the EEG that the person is too sleepy to get good raw data?9:42 Disposable sleep tests vs sleep clinic tests12:57 Actigraphy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actigraphy13:30 Ambien's role in sleep issues14:48 Benzodiazepine20:40 Sleeping and brain as a washing machine or toilet?21:36 Bursts of creativity when you wake up.
