In this week's episode of the Chasing Clarity Health & Fitness Podcast, I sit down with my client and former Division 1 athlete, fitness professional, and tech sales leader Nikki Zahka to unpack her journey from chronic under-fueling and hypothalamic amenorrhea to restoring her health, rebuilding her physiology, and achieving her best physique yet.We cover:NIKKI'S ATHLETIC HISTORYNIKKI'S PROFESSIONAL ENDEAVORSHigh performers often burn the candle at both ends not realizing that stress adds up across life domains.WHERE NIKKI WAS AT THE START OF COACHING (JANUARY 2023)Physique looked great externally but internally her health was compromised.Chronic under-eating (1200–1350 kcal/day) with high-output training.Showing signs of suppressed physiology, poor digestion, and hormonal dysfunction.WHAT NIKKI WAS EXPERIENCING WHEN WE STARTED WORKING TOGETHEROver 3 years without a menstrual cycle.Classic RED-S biofeedback: fatigue, hormone suppression, stress overload.Chronic under-fueling led to poor quality of life despite looking “fit.”HYPOTHALAMIC AMENORRHEA (HA)Causes: low energy availability + high stress suppressing hypothalamic signaling.Effects: reduced thyroid, elevated cortisol, reduced estrogen/progesterone.RELATIVE ENERGY DEFICIENCY & LOW ENERGY AVAILABILITY (LEA)Adaptable LEA: short-term, strategic, recoverable.Problematic LEA: chronic, damaging, with systemic consequences.Nikki had been in problematic LEA for years due to mismatch of intake/output.CONSEQUENCES OF RED-SHORMONAL: ↓ thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, IGF-1, leptin; ↑ cortisol.METABOLIC: suppressed RMR, reduced MPS.BONE HEALTH: ↓ bone mineral density, ↑ fracture risk.GI: constipation, digestive distress.PERFORMANCE: ↓ strength, endurance, glycogen storage, recovery; ↑ injury risk.HEMATOLOGICAL: iron deficiency → worsened thyroid function.THE PRIMER PHASEFoundation-building stage where we focused on restoring physiology, habits, and metabolic health.Pulled back from high-intensity, exhaustive training.Focused on fueling, recovery, sleep, stress management.INTENTION OF THE PRIMER PHASEReverse chronic low energy availability.NUTRIENT TIMING & WITHIN-DAY ENERGY AVAILABILITYImportance of distribution, not just daily totals.Even fueling throughout the day → reduces stress, improves recovery, supports hormones.Avoid large gaps without eating & fasted high-intensity training.OUTCOMES OF THE PRIMER PHASEAfter 6 months: improved training performance, recovery, and body recomposition.Fueling at >2000 kcal on training days at ~110 lbs.Biofeedback improved across the board.Proof that correcting EA + structured resistance training = muscle gain & better hormone function.LEAN BUILDING PHASESNext step after Primer: structured lean muscle gain phase RESTORED MENSTRUAL CYCLE after 3+ years.Focused on performance, fueling, and health markers.Out of 55 weeks, only 6 spent dieting; most time spent building.Mindset shift: from chasing leanness to fueling abundance.LESSONS & TAKEAWAYSNikki's story is a powerful reminder that A HEALTHY BODY IS A RESPONSIVE BODY and when you prioritize physiology, the physiqueresults follow.WHERE TO CONNECT WITH ME:Follow Brandon on IG: https://www.instagram.com/brandondacruz_/For Info on Brandon's Coaching Services: https://form.jotform.com/bdacruzfitness/coachinginquiryEmail: Bdacruzfitness@gmail.comBrandon's Website: https://www.brandondacruzfit.com
If all it took was a basic understanding of food to get lean and healthy, all men would have visible abs and never need the scale. The reality, however, is that most men don't have the abs and, although they may have the scale, they're not really willing to get on it. It turns out that the science of food and how it reacts with our body goes so much deeper, including the mental and emotional realm. My guest today, author of Eat Smarter, Shawn Stevenson, has spent decades of his life understanding the basics and nuances of the fuel we call food and our relationship with it. We cover why not all calories are the same, how culture impacts our eating decision making process, how placebos are more effective than you'd think in curing illness and disease, why the diversity of what you eat is just as important as how much you eat, and why you are what you eat. Dabei sind dem Biofeedbackexperten Ulrich Bauer-Staeb gewisse psychisch-emotionale Muster aufgefallen, die auch meiner eigenen Erfahrung aus Seminaren zum Thema entsprechen. You can find all the new resources and ways to connect with me in the show notes. I hope you are having the best summer! Enjoy! Let's dive in and revisit the best of the best! It isn't that it's too hard. You can trust the process. And it definitely isn't your lack of willpower. The things holding you back from food freedom may not be what you expect. In today's episode, I'm unpacking six fear-based blockers that can quietly sabotage your path to empowered eating—and how to move past them with compassion and clarity. Here's what we're covering: 1. Fast (but not good) results If I had a dollar for every person who lost weight fast and regained it (plus more)... I'd be opening a restaurant and serving you all dinner. Don't be distracted by someone else's temporary success. Real change takes balance and time. 2. Resistance to natural changes Bodies change—because life changes. You're not meant to look like you did in high school. Postpartum bellies, aging skin, and new phases are part of being human. It's time we rewrite the narrative. 3. Unrealistic expectations Are you setting goals that your current season of life can't support? Let's talk about tuning into God's vision for you—so you can focus on what really matters and feel successful doing it. 4. Not living in the present You can't connect to your body if you're constantly in your head. Biofeedback only works when you're here—not planning the next diet, not reliving last weekend's food choices. Just here. 5. Lack of gratitude We've been trained to pick apart our bodies. But when you shift your focus to what your body can do and how it's serving you, your mindset (and choices) start to change. 6. Inability to find satisfaction in food Legalizing all foods can feel scary—but it's also the gateway to freedom. True satisfaction changes your cravings, your choices, and your relationship with food for the long haul. A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health
Does it feel like no matter what you try—therapy, medication, behavior plans, or new routines—your child still can't calm down, stay focused, or manage big emotions? You're not alone—and you're certainly not failing as a parent. So many families come to me after trying everything, only to watch their child continue to spiral. That's when we stop chasing symptoms and start addressing the root cause: a dysregulated nervous system. In this episode, I'm walking you through what actually works to create lasting change. From calming the brain and building emotional safety to using science-backed, sensory-based tools, you'll learn how to help your child regulate from the inside out.Why Doesn't Traditional Therapy Work for a Dysregulated Child? It's heartbreaking when therapy doesn't help, but the problem isn't the therapist—it's the timing. A dysregulated brain simply can't process insight.Talk therapy assumes the brain is ready to reason. But when kids are in chronic fight, flight, or freeze, that thinking part of the brain is offline. What Works Instead:Start with nervous system regulation—then therapy becomes effective.Use play, movement, and sensory input for younger or highly dysregulated kids.Don't expect meds to teach skills. They may reduce symptoms but don't build regulation.Regulation is a skill, not a switch. It develops with practice, connection, and safety—not punishment or over-verbalizing.Want to stay calm when your child pushes every button?Become a Dysregulation Insider VIP and get the FREE Regulation Rescue Kit—your step-by-step guide to stop oppositional behaviors without yelling or giving in.Go to www.drroseann.com/newsletter and grab your kit today. What Brain-Based Tools Can Help Regulate Emotional Reactivity? You don't need a complicated treatment plan filled with charts, timers, or new rewards every week. What your child really needs is simple, brain-friendly tools used consistently—tools that calm the nervous system and support regulation from the inside out.The key is working with your child's biology, not against it. When the nervous system feels safe and supported, the brain becomes more flexible, and emotional reactivity begins to settle. That's when your child can finally start to pause, think, and respond—not just react. One powerful option is neurofeedback or PEMF therapy, which helps the brain learn how to shift into more regulated patterns over time. These tools gently retrain the brain for calm and focus, creating lasting changes without side effects.Daily breathwork and grounding exercises are another game-changer. Long, slow exhales activate the vagus nerve, signaling to the body that it's safe. Even just a few minutes a day can make a big impact. Here are a few simple grounding strategies to try:Lying flat on the floor to reconnect with the bodyTapping each arm gently in a slow, calming rhythmDoing a body scan before bed to release tension and improve sleepSensory integration activities are incredibly effective for resetting a dysregulated brain. These movements strengthen the communication between both sides of the brain and support mood, focus, and behavior.Try incorporating:Cross-body movements (like cross crawls or opposite elbow-to-knee taps)Rhythm games (clapping, drumming, or patterned jumping)Deep pressure input (weighted blankets, bear hugs, or joint compressions)Biofeedback is another helpful tool. It teaches kids how to control automatic...

What do biofeedback, brewery manners, and doggy backpacks have in common? Amber Quann, CEO and Head Trainer at Summit Dog Training, weaves them together beautifully in this episode of Enrichment for the Real World. Host Emily Strong and guest, Amber Quann dig into the nuances of dog relaxation, not just as a one-size-fits-all goal, but as a spectrum that requires thoughtful practice and an understanding of what each individual dog needs to get there.Whether you're curious about how to help your dog unwind after a zoomie-fueled afternoon or you're wondering if your tiny pup can really enjoy a big hike, Amber brings science, heart, and a whole lot of actionable wisdom. Plus, you'll hear all about her Drink With Your Dog program that's making breweries more dog-friendly across the country.Meet Amber: Summit Dog Training CEO and Head Trainer, Amber Quann, has been in the dog training world since her childhood days in a 4-H club. With credentials from Karen Pryor Academy, CCPDT, and TAGteach, Amber is passionate about helping people and their dogs adventure together in a way that's safe, fun, and behaviorally sound. She's the creator of Drink With Your Dog®, a program designed to create more brewery-friendly dogs, and dog-friendly breweries. When she's not teaching, podcasting, or presenting at ClickerExpo, she's out hiking and hanging with her Papillon sidekick, Jameson.TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 1️⃣ Relaxation Is a Skill, Not a Switch – Helping dogs relax isn't just about asking them to lie down—it's about meeting their physical, mental, and emotional needs before asking for stillness.2️⃣ Trial-and-Eval Is the Name of the Game – Whether it's sniffaris, chew sessions, zoomies, or training games, each dog has unique needs to prep for rest. Find your pet's recharge formula.3️⃣ Small Dogs, Big Adventures – Don't let short legs stop the journey. With the right gear and prep, little dogs can hike, explore, and thrive alongside their big dog buddies (and humans).Links & Resources from the Episode
Neurofeedback from the Posterior Cingulate Cortex as a Mental Mirror for MeditationIn this episode, Dr. Jud Brewer and Dr. Remko van Lutterveld explore how real-time neurofeedback from the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) can serve as a "mental mirror" to enhance meditation practice. Meditation is known for its benefits, but learning how to meditate effectively can be challenging due to the lack of immediate feedback. This study demonstrates how fMRI-based neurofeedback helps meditators recognize when their minds wander and when they are fully immersed in meditation. By providing real-time insights into brain activity, this innovative approach may accelerate meditation learning and deepen self-awareness. Tune in to discover how neurofeedback is bridging the gap between brain science and contemplative practice.Full Reference:van Lutterveld, R., & Brewer, J. A. (2015). About this show: Many years ago I realized that i had built my identity around being "confused" and "broken," and I often compensated for it with humor and other things. Now I see those compensations as tools to use vs them using me. I went through deep personal development work, a divorce, and periods of depression. Eventually, I realized that if I wanted a different life, I had to change my identity. I created a mission for myself: to become a catalyst who helps people live meaningful lives.Along the way, I used various strategies to shift my mindset. I learned to associate more with acknowledgments than with failures, and I committed to creating and living from a new identity. I also had to confront challenges like dealing with ADD, feeling disconnected from my body, and learning the importance of being fully present in the moment. Biofeedback training, participating in men's groups, and developing what I call a "compassionate observer" were all critical parts of my journey.I've come to believe that the challenges I faced in childhood, though painful, were actually gifts. They helped me become a more intuitive and effective coach. I place a strong emphasis on understanding people's "model of the world" and focus my coaching on creating minimum change for maximum return on investment over time. In the end, I've found that living from a mission naturally fuels my own ongoing personal development. My Success Coaching website is https://Coachingsupport.com .
