Show aired on NEWS RADIO 570 WSYR / 106.9 FM on February 4, 2024 Dr. Dale Bredesen's latest work continues to focus on groundbreaking approaches to Alzheimer's disease, emphasizing the reversibility and treatability of cognitive decline through a precision medicine approach. His work, particularly through the Bredesen Protocol®, has been showcased in various platforms and resources. Dr. Bredesen's approach is holistic, focusing on seven distinct strategies that include nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, brain stimulation, detoxification, and supplements. These strategies aim to create neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural connections, thereby promoting healing and cognitive improvement. This multifaceted approach is designed to optimize conditions for brain health, potentially reversing the symptoms of Alzheimer's and other forms of cognitive decline. His research and methodology challenge the traditional view of Alzheimer's as an unpreventable and irreversible disease. Instead, Dr. Bredesen's work offers hope for those affected, suggesting that early intervention and a comprehensive approach to lifestyle and health can lead to significant improvements in cognitive function. Moreover, Dr. Bredesen delves into the science behind Alzheimer's, discussing the crucial role of protein folding and autophagy in brain health. Misfolded proteins and impaired autophagy processes are common in neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting the importance of cellular maintenance mechanisms in preventing cognitive decline. Strategies such as cyclical fasting and enhancing mitochondrial function are among the interventions recommended to improve autophagy and energy metabolism in the brain. For more detailed insights into Dr. Bredesen's latest findings and the principles of the Bredesen Protocol®, you might find his books, including "The First Survivors of Alzheimer's," to be valuable resources. These publications not only provide scientific background on his approach to treating Alzheimer's but also share transformative stories from individuals who have successfully reversed their cognitive decline using his protocol. Dr. Bredesen's work represents a significant shift in the understanding and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, offering a beacon of hope for millions of individuals and families affected by this condition.

Dr. Lisa Broyles - Love Up Your Liver

Keeping your liver clean is yet another way to boost your cognitive longevity and enhance the likelihood that your brain stays sharp as long as possible. Though many people pay little attention to the liver and have scant knowledge of what it does, this vital organ performs many critical roles in enabling the body to continue functioning. Most significantly, it rids the bloodstream of harmful toxins.   “Your liver is vitally important,” explains Dr. Lisa Broyles. “It removes toxins and chemicals that are dangerous for us from our blood and gets rid of them.” Dr. Broyles, a certified functional medicine doctor who is specially trained in preventing and reversing cognitive decline, says that people should pay attention to the liver and take steps to detoxify the organ if it is struggling to perform its many functions. Among those functions, besides detoxifying the blood stream, are producing and regulating the level of cholesterol, regulating sex hormones, storing sugar when the body needs it, tending to the body's immune health, and guarding against blood clotting.   When the liver is having difficulty in its effort to remove bodily toxins, it can lead to such problems as migraine headaches, autoimmune disease, cancer, lupus, and arthritis. The liver must be clean, Dr. Broyles says, if it is to effectively do its job. “I do think that every six months, ideally, everyone should do a liver and gallbladder flush, and followed by some colon hydrotherapy, both before and after,” she recommends. Dr. Broyles says that a number of companies offer liver cleansing approaches and kits. She talks about three phases of liver detoxification - oxidation, conjugation (making toxins more water soluble so they excrete into the intestines and leave the body), and transportation where toxins are broken down (to assure a healthy gallbladder).   The food you eat and the medicines and vitamins you take can all enhance — or in some cases hinder — the the way the three phases clean the liver of its toxins. For instance, Tylenol can shut down the process of liver conjugation, according to Dr. Broyles. She points out that genetic make-up also plays a role in liver detoxification; each person is different and testing can help determine the right steps to take in cleaning the liver.    ***** Dr. Lisa Broyles, MD, is trained in the Bredesen Protocol, a personalized program to prevent and reverse cognitive decline. It is estimated that nearly 50 million currently living Americans will die of Alzheimer's disease if effective prevention and reversal are not implemented–almost 100 times more than have died of COVID-19. Mainstream medicine would have you believe that it can't be prevented, is untreatable, and progressive, with most patients not surviving beyond three to eleven years post-diagnosis.   But we are learning that the disease is a pathology of multiple causes that is preventable and even reversible in the early stages through the kind of holistic and individualized approach prescribed by the Bredesen Protocol.   A certified functional medicine doctor with an interest in holistic/integrative medicine, Dr. Broyles is transforming medical care in rural North Carolina. Addressing the underlying causes of disease rather than simply treating symptoms, Dr. Broyles uses a systems-oriented, holistic approach that engages both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. The result has been a palpable rise in health IQ and wellness in the community she serves.   “People are hungry for this kind of patient/physician collaborative care. They want to take charge of their well-being. They want to feel empowered. Too often, though, the insurance system in America limits choices for physicians and patients alike. Functional medicine represents a fundamental paradigm shift from symptom suppression to an integrative body/mind approach to optimal health,” said Dr. Broyles.   Hoping to help more people than her limited practice can accommodate, Dr. Broyles is reaching out to her community through the Cutting-Edge Health podcast and other platforms.   Having graduated from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and completed her three-year residency at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Dr. Broyles is currently a family practitioner in Saluda, North Carolina.   For the past several years, she served patients at urgent care and occupational medicine centers in South Carolina and Tennessee. Prior to this, she was medical director for the East Tennessee Spine and Nerve Center in Chattanooga and the Johnson City Tennessee Downtown Clinic. Most women should consider bioidentical hormone replacement therapy at menopause to increase estrogen production and enhance their health and cognitive functions, according to Dr. Lisa Broyles, a functional medicine doctor. “We can prove that it does improve cognition and lessens the risk of you developing Alzheimer's in the future,” she says. Even prior to menopause, those women who experience symptoms like anxiety, forgetfulness and sleep difficulty should contemplate the hormone therapy, Dr. Broyles suggests. “Studies show the sooner that you start it, the better you're going to do as far as your cognition,” she says. “Women that start it right away when they go through menopause and stay on hormone therapy for those first 10 years, between ages 50 to 60, consistently have less risk of developing Alzheimer's dementia than those that aren't on it at all, or that start it after that 10-year period. She strongly cautions, however, that women focus on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, or that which is similar to human-grade progesterone. Research two decades ago by the Women's Health Initiative found that some estrogen replacements — particularly those that contained the synthetic progesterone, medroxyprogesterone — diminished cognition and potentially could lead to heart attacks or breast cancer. Dr. Broyles also recommends avoiding oral replacement therapy and advises that all women first consult doctors since individual risk factors must be taken into account prior to initiating the bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Sections of the brain first impacted by Alzheimer's — including the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the forebrain — all have estrogen receptors, Dr. Broyles points out. Estrogen makes blood vessels more pliable and increases the strength of synaptic signals in the brain that allow for neurons to communicate with one another and reproduce more freely. In 2016, researchers—from the University of California, Buck Institute for Research on Aging, Pacific Medical Center, and Brainreader—followed up on the anecdotal results from the 10 patients in this study. They provided objective results from quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological testing. The researchers authored another paper on results of the MEND protocol, which was published by Aging and entitled, “Reversal of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease.” To date, this paper has generated an Altmetric Attention score of 263. “In each of these cases, obvious subjective improvement, noted by the patient, his/her significant other, and his/her co-workers, was accompanied by clear, quantitated, objective improvement.” The MEND protocol, also known as the Bredesen Protocol (named after the creator of the protocol, Dr. Dale Bredesen), consists of a multifaceted, tailored approach to treating each AD patient for their individual symptoms of cognitive decline—and not only a few symptoms. This strategy uses a combination of diet, lifestyle, and therapeutic interventions. Treatment is based on the hypothesis that AD occurs due to an imbalance in an extensive plasticity network in the brain. The authors note that the MEND protocol is an iterative process and designed to improve with continued patient visits. “The therapeutic system described in this report derives from basic studies of the role of APP signaling and proteolysis in plasticity, and the imbalance in this receptor proteolysis that reproducibly occurs in Alzheimer's disease.” Upon clinical assessment and lab testing, patient physical and cognitive health was evaluated. Based on this assessment, patients were prescribed a lengthy personalized therapeutic system. Among other objectives, the MEND protocol recommends treating diabetes; improving sleep and digestive health; reducing stress, inflammation, and blood sugar; increasing physical exercise, intellectual stimulation, antioxidants, and vitamins; and optimizing hormone balance, synthesis of acetylcholine, nerve growth factors, and mitochondrial function. “In each of these cases, obvious subjective improvement, noted by the patient, his/her significant other, and his/her co-workers, was accompanied by clear, quantitated, objective improvement.” Full blog - https://www.impactjournals.com/journals/blog/aging/reversing-alzheimers-disease-symptoms/ Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://oncotarget.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Foncotarget.100981 DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.100981 Full text - https://www.aging-us.com/article/100981/text Correspondence to: Dale E. In this episode of Functional Medicine Research, I interview dietician Tracey Long in a deep discussion about how to overcome mold and biotoxin illness. Tracey has firsthand experience with mold and biotoxin illness so she brings a unique and valuable perspective to this topic. We discussed Tracey's personal journey with mold and biotoxin illness, how to test your home for mold, lab testing, associated conditions, symptoms, and management strategies to get well. Full transcript on How to Overcome Mold and Biotoxin Illness Dr. Hedberg: Well, welcome, everyone, to "Functional Medicine Research." I'm Dr. Hedberg. Really excited today to have my good friend and colleague, Tracey Long, on the show. Tracey is a registered dietician, with specialty certification training in Integrative and Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy and The Bredesen Protocol to End Alzheimer's. She owns a private practice, Big Picture Health in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she sees clients via video consultations. She specializes in working with clients with neurodegenerative conditions, biotoxin illnesses, gastrointestinal conditions, and nutrigenomics. She is a published author and teaches health coaches for Chris Kresser's Health Coach Training Program. Tracey's education includes a master of public health, an emphasis on nutrition and exercise physiology from the Colorado School of Public Health, where she studied under Dr. Loren Cordain who many of you may know as the author of "The Paleo Diet." And she's also a registered yoga teacher and certified exercise physiologist. Her personal interest include hiking with her husband and dog, urban farming, teaching yoga, foraging for mushrooms in the mountains of Western North Carolina, growing medicinal herbs and produce, paddleboarding, and visiting her three grown daughters in Colorado. Tracey, welcome to the show.   Tracey: Thank you so much, Nik. I'm so happy to be here with you today. Really appreciate the opportunity. Dr. Hedberg: Yes. Yeah. It's gonna be fun. So why don't we begin by talking about your personal journey with mold? And that's gonna be the topic of today, mold and biotoxin illness. So why don't you share your personal journey? Tracey: You bet I'd love to. And really, my personal journey, Nik, really started with a professional journey in that I became very interested in neurodegenerative conditions and I completed Dr. Bredesen's training, as you mentioned, The Bredesen Protocol to End Alzheimer's. And Dr. Bredesen has sub-categorized underlying causes of Alzheimer's, and one of those underlying causes he refers to as type three Alzheimer's that's really related to toxins. And he's identified three categories of primary toxins. The first one is heavy metals and the second one is biotoxins. And in that category, biotoxins, certainly, mold is included and also tick-borne illnesses. And now even recently we've added COVID-19, especially from the standpoint of, you know, people who have had COVID-19 and they haven't recovered. You know, we're referring to them as long haulers. And I bring that up. I'll tie that all in in just a minute. The third type of toxin Dr. Bredesen addresses are organic compounds. So there are things like herbicides and pesticides, things that we can be highly exposed to in the environment. It was interesting in that journey that I had that training and I started working with clients with all the subtypes of Alzheimer's, little did I know that I would end up having my own personal experience. So I was assisting clients who had been exposed to mold, certainly, and then we ended up moving to North Carolina. It's in the South. It's very moist here, as you know, I know you live here too. So, you know, we've had a year of record rainfall here. So I moved from Colorado, which was very hot and dry to the Southeast, which is living like in the tropics, really. We're living in a rental house. And when we found the house,

Not long after, she went on to establish the International Support Fibromyalgia Network, a non-profit patient-led organization created to fulfill the unmet needs of the fibromyalgia community. #SupportFibro believes in collaboration. It is open, participatory and dedicated to educating, advocating and inspiring the fibromyalgia community. Melissa was awarded with the honor for Healthcare Collaborator: Patient. Tune in as Melissa shares… that her chronic pain journey started with a sports injury, when she was an Olympic hopeful for CA in the 800m that she suffered a concussion and couldn’t even walk up stairs when her chronic pain began — and she was eventually in a wheelchair that fibromyalgia had rarely been seen in juveniles when she was first diagnosed as a teen in the ‘90s that fibromyalgia itself is far from rare, and its incidence has increased over the years that she was placed on numerous anti-psychotics and other drugs, which caused terrible side effects that in 2016, still in a state of physical decline (and about to invest in an electric wheelchair), she heard about Dave Asprey and began exploring his approaches, Dr. Terry Wahls’ writing, Dr. Dale Bredesen and his book The End of Alzheimer’s, and functional medicine — and finally began to see a positive change in her health that she gathered past labs, studied her inflammation levels, and began to design and implement a 36-variable protocol that gave her back her life that mental health has been a big component in her healing how she plans to continue the growth of the Support Fibromyalgia Network — through patient education initiatives that empower them to reclaim their health that she combats depression by keeping her mind focused and busy — and learning new skills that fibromyalgia isn’t currently classified as an autoimmune disease

Keeping the brain nourished, free from toxicity and active is one of the keys to epic health and longevity. In this awesome interview Mason dives deep into the neural world with brain health expert Jo Grabyn.    Neurodegenration is a current epidemic in the West and it is getting worse. Modern medicine has yet to get to the root cause of the premature ageing of the brain. One of the amazing distinctions to come out of this interview is how there are 6 general types of Alzheimer's, not just one, and how this tells us that lifestyle and environmental factors play major roles in creating these diseases/symptoms; this means the power is in your hands to make changes.    You will learn:  - The top causes of neurodegernation, including Alzheimer's and dementia - The lifestyle choices you can make now to prevent the onset of premature ageing of the brain - Treatment protocols for degeneration of the brain - The signs to watch out for and act upon early for brain health - How the gut and brain are connected through the vagus nerve  - Ways to become a detective and discover the root cause of your brain symptoms - And heaps, HEAPS more   Jo Grabyn has a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional Medicine), and studied psycho-neuro-immunology (PNI) and psycho-neuro-endocrinology (PNE); basically, how your thinking creates & changes brain chemistry, affecting your hormones, your immune system & your whole body in turn. Jo is qualified in the Bredesen Protocol (also known as the MEND Protocol), making me one of the few in Australia who can use this method to tackle and reverse—or prevent—the onset of early Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. In this week’s podcast we return to our “Success Leaves Clues” series: “Bredesen Protocol in Alabama”, featuring functional neuropsychologist Dr. Kristine Lokken, CEO and founder of Brain Health Institute in Birmingham, AL.  “I’m living a dream I didn’t know I had”―is the quote that defines this podcast. Dr. Lokken didn’t know she wanted to be an entrepreneur or a functional medicine doctor until she came across Dr. Dale Bredesen and Kelly Brogan’s work, discovered the Evolution of Medicine book and enrolled in the Practice Accelerator program. From there, she implemented what she learned to establish Brain Health Institute, and realized entrepreneurship provided the life and freedom she had always dreamed of. Tune in to hear more of Dr. Lokken’s inspiring story and learn: How she started up Brain Health Institute while keeping her positions as medical director at the VA Hospital and professor at University of Alabama How practicing the Bredesen Protocol has provided her with a steady stream of new patients How she’s packaged her programs to maximize patient outcomes and compliance What types of patients are looking for help with cognitive decline and brain health Which aspects of the Practice Accelerator allowed her to realize her new dream Success like this can happen in any city and any state. Thousands of patients have bought Dale Bredesen’s NYT-Best-Selling book: “The End of Alzheimer’s”. Like Dr. Lokken, you can be ahead of the curve to deliver that type of care in your home town, and the Practice Accelerator can help you get there fast.
