This is a very important topic and one in which you can make a difference. Our environment is sickening the population. Parkinson's disease is one example of a condition that likely was caused by pesticides and other toxic chemicals in our water, food, air and soil. All of us can contribute to preventing future generations from getting Parkinson's and other diseases. Those already diagnosed may benefit as well. If we avoid these chemicals now, we may slow the progression of the disease just as exercise has been proven to do so. Bottom line: we need to work together to get these destructive chemicals banned forever. I spoke with Dr. Ray Dorsey on this topic. He and his colleagues have been sounding the alarm on all the ways certain chemicals are causing the increase in PD cases all over the world. Their first book, “Ending Parkinson's”, started the conversation on preventing and treating the disease. In their new book, “The Parkinson's Plan”, there is specific plan for each person or community to follow in order to live a healthier life and advocate for change to help prevent future generations from suffering due to exposure to these toxic substances. Listen on to hear Dr. Dorsey's passion and efforts to ban harmful chemicals still being used in our communities. Let's make our voices heard and advocate to ban pesticides and harmful chemicals. https://pdplan.org/ https://www.michaeljfox.org/news/national-plan-end-parkinsons-act-makes-progress-congress https://www.atria.org/ info@pdplan.org (Dr. Dorsey's email address) https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member https://www.dbsandme.com/en.html

In this episode of "Your Health Matters," host Karl Sterling discusses Parkinson's disease, offering insights into its definition, symptoms, and management strategies. With extensive experience and works like "Parkinson's Regeneration Training" and "Parkinson's Empowerment Training," Sterling provides practical advice for improving the lives of those affected by the disease. What is Parkinson's Disease? Parkinson's is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that primarily affects the substantia nigra, a brain region responsible for producing dopamine, which is vital for movement and coordination. As brain cells die, dopamine production drops, causing motor and non-motor symptoms. Key Points: - Dopamine's Role: Dopamine is essential for smooth movement, and its deficiency leads to typical Parkinson's symptoms. - Substantia Nigra: The brain region most impacted by Parkinson's, responsible for dopamine production. Early Intervention By the time symptoms appear, significant damage to the substantia nigra has often occurred, making early detection critical. Who is Affected by Parkinson's Disease? Dr. Ray Dorsey estimates that only 5-10% of Parkinson's cases are hereditary, indicating that environmental factors play a key role. Sterling highlights potential contributors like diet and toxin exposure. Environmental Factors: - Processed Foods: Around 70% of the food supply is processed, contributing to inflammation and potentially increasing Parkinson's risk. - Toxins: Pesticides like paraquat and chemicals used in dry cleaning have been linked to the disease. Case Study: Sterling recounts a study involving identical twins, where one twin developed Parkinson's after long-term exposure to environmental toxins, emphasizing how environmental factors may trigger the disease. Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease Parkinson's includes both motor and non-motor symptoms, which can vary in severity. Sterling outlines the five major motor symptoms: Motor Symptoms: 1. Resting Tremors: Involuntary shaking, usually in the hands. 2. Rigidity: Muscle stiffness. 3. Bradykinesia: Slowness of movement. 4. Akinesia: Difficulty starting movement. 5. Postural Instability: Balance problems that increase fall risk. Non-Motor Symptoms: - Depression and Anxiety: Common in both patients and caregivers. - Constipation: Due to slow digestion. - Cognitive Decline: Memory and thinking difficulties. - Visual Changes: Problems with vision. Management Strategies Sterling stresses the importance of personalized treatment, combining exercise, cognitive training, and community support. Exercise: - Strength and Cardiovascular Training: 20-30 minutes of moderate exercise daily boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a hormone that promotes brain health. - Start Slow: Gradually increase workout intensity. - Combine Physical and Cognitive Training: Incorporating cognitive tasks with exercise enhances multitasking abilities and lowers fall risk. Community Programs: - Lebanon Dojo's Neuro-Motor Training Program: This program, designed for seniors, including Parkinson's patients, offers a supportive environment for physical and cognitive exercises. Conclusion Karl Sterling's discussion on Parkinson's disease provides vital insights into the condition's symptoms, causes, and management. By sharing his expertise, Sterling encourages individuals to take control of their health. Combining exercise, cognitive training, and community support can help those with Parkinson's improve their quality of life and maintain independence. Neurologist Dr Ray Dorsey author of Ending parkinsons disease returns to the podcast. Clearly theres a huge interest in all forms of dementia, in Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers disease and Lewy body dementia which is the disease to which Robin Williams sadly succumbed only a few years ago. So in this episode we talk about Parkinsons disease, how it was discovered, its symptoms but crucially why Dr Dorsey and other experts believe it is preventable. We hear of the environmental factors that Dr Dorsey believes are causing Parkinsons and other forms of dementia, including dry cleaning chemicals, emissions from cars and toxins contaminating our food. We learn that only in a very small number of cases of Parkinsons are genetics implicated, which further points to factors outside the body that are driving this and other forms of cognitive decline. It is also Dr Dorsey's belief that contamination by toxins is what is driving the huge spike in cases of autism in recent years. Trichloroethylene (TCE). You cannot see it or smell it. It could be in the air you breath, the water you drink, and the food you eat. In Journal of Parkinson's Disease, Dr. Ray Dorsey at the University of Rochester and eleven colleagues have published a research article asking the question “Is Trichlorethylene an invisible cause of Parkinson's?” The authors go on to make a convincing case. Dr. Dorsey joins the podcast to explain the dangers of TCE, how it seeps into ground water, your home, schools, and office buildings, how to protect yourself, and where you can look to see if a TCE Superfund site is near where you live.  KEY LINKS BOOK: ENDING PARKINSON'S DISEASE; A PRESCRIPTION FOR ACTION JOURNAL OF PARKINSON'S DISEASE (SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL)  Trichloroethylene: An Invisible Cause of Parkinson's Disease? They will break down step-by-step what PACT is composed of: P - Prevent the disease, A - Advocate for protective policies, C - Care for patients, and T - Treat the condition with innovative therapies, and how even average citizens can play a part in ending the disease by making the commitment to carry out the steps of PACT themselves. With a bold vision on how to eventually prevent the disease altogether, Drs. Dorsey and Okun explain to the audience what it would take to get there - medically, financially, politically and socially. Whether you are a patient, relative of someone living with the disease, clinician, politician or activist, this hour has imperative and life changing information in store for you.

April is Donate Life Month, and we examine many challenges facing organ transplant recipients. Amidst the physical and emotional toll of surgery, many patients also have to juggle apartment searching, moving, and financing a second home or apartment while they recover. And insurance companies refuse to cover these expenses.Denise Redeker, Founder and CEO of Heartfelt Help Foundation, shares her experience undergoing a heart transplant, her move to Silicon Valley for the procedure, and how her organization helps other organ recipients find affordable housing.Plus, field correspondent Kate Pecora interviews Richard Sperry on his misdiagnosis of ALS and how it led him to patient advocacy. And neurologist Dr. Ray Dorsey outlines action items for helping the Parkinson’s community. Guest:Denise RedekerFounder and CEO, Heartfelt Help FoundationDenise Redeker is a heart transplant recipient, patient advocate, organ donation advocate and founder of Heartfelt Help Foundation.  Founded in 2020,  Heartfelt Help Foundation  helps Bay Area transplant recipients both afford and source the medically required post transplant housing that, for most transplant recipients, necessitates relocating temporarily to within a short distance of their hospital.  Such expenses are rarely covered by insurance, often extremely expensive, and sufficiently critical to transplant recovery that an inability to afford them can delay a patient’s life-saving transplant surgery. In her free time, Denise loves long walks on the beach and discovering new hiking trails with her husband, Jim and son Matthew.  Links:Denise RedekerHeartfelt Help FoundationWhite House Proclamation on National Donate Life MonthPatients Rising Statement on H.R. 3LISTEN: What’s in H.R. 3? Investment in biomedical research in the United States is declining at a time when other countries have been increasing their spending. While this is raising concerns about the threats this poses to the nation's economic competitiveness, a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests new strategies will be necessary to fund research and development if the clinical value of past investments and opportunities to improve care are to be fully realized. We spoke to study co-author Ray Dorsey, Professor of Neurology and Co-Director of the Center for Human Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Rochester Medical Center, about the findings, what strategies can be employed to reverse the trends, and why new investment alone is not the answer.
