During that time, she has suffered so many loses that she has changed her name to Me to reflect her loneliness. She wants to ...

From Skaro to Gallifrey, twelve episodes of one of the strangest seasons in Doctor Who's history. What did we think, what did we learn, and what are we most looking forward to? And, as always, who would we snog, marry or avoid? Notes and links Thanks to Bob Gilbey (@bobgilbey), Bryan says… (@bryan1981) and DJ Alpha-T (@DJ_AlphaT) for contributing their questions to this episode. As we well know, an anthology of short stories about the life of Ashildr was indeed published in 2015. It was called Doctor Who: Legends of Ashildr, and it includes stories by Justin Richards and James Goss. In the shownotes for last week's episode we discussed the fact that Heaven Sent was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2016, Doctor Who didn't receive any awards at all for its 2015 season. And, since we properly failed to mention it (or even remember it, you might say with some justification), the Jenny Laird Award goes to a season or era's most puzzling creative choice, and the Bonnie Langford goes to someone or something that is surprisingly and delightfully good. And more Our new podcast, The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire, is your number-one source for our ill-considered opinions on the Second RTD Era. Here's our take on The Star Beast, and here's our take on Wild Blue Yonder. Our take on The Giggle will be out on Monday. There's also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. Two episodes have been released so far: our commentary on the pilot episode Breakaway, and our commentary on the episode Force of Life. We're still planning to release the next episode after Christmas. Maximum Power continues its journey through Series C of Blakes 7. This week, Servalan kills a bunch of people in Children of Auron. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, yhey were joined by Tom Salinsky to watch all-time fan favourite Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
It's been a mere 900 years since last week's episode, and it's time to check in with Ashildr to see if she's still the naive and loving young girl she was back in her Viking village days. Or — like the rest of us — has she simply turned into Peter Capaldi's Doctor? It's The Woman Who Lived. Notes and links Nathan refers to the Blackadder the Third episode Amy and Amiability in which a young woman played by Miranda Richardson disguises herself as a highwayman called the Shadow, who has a serious problem with squirrels. The first scene of this story is very much written by someone who remembers that episode. In his massive best seller Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell proposes the theory that it takes 10,000 hours to become really proficient at something. If you want to hear two of our favourite podcasters rip Gladwell's book apart, they do that in an episode of their podcast If Books Could Kill. Richard mentions the Sydney Theatre Company's 2020 production of The Picture of Dorian Gray, directed by Kip Williams and starring Eryn Jean Norvill as the only cast member, playing no less than 26 characters. Williams is bringing that production to London's West End in 2024, starring Succession's Sarah Snook. The Doctor Who production crew gave Maisie Williams and Rufus Hound video cameras so that they could record things that took place during the production. One of Rufus's videos made it onto the Series 9 blu-ray release; three of them can be found on the BBC's YouTube channel — here, here, and here. Watch them: they're adorable. Picks of the week Todd Todd recommends the Torchwood episodes also written by Catherine Tregenna, particularly the sad and beautiful Captain Jack Harkness, as well as Meat and Adam (and Out of Time, a brilliant episode that we didn't mention). Simon Simon wants you watch The Beast (2023) starring Léa Seydoux, who played James Bond's love interest in the two most recent films. It's a romance set in three different time periods, 1910, 2014 and 2044. It's due for release some time early next year. Richard Richard has headed into Big Finish territory, particularly those stories starring Rufus Hound as the Monk, particularly The Missy Adventures, whose first three box sets also feature Rufus Hound. He also appears with Tim Treloar and Katy Manning in Volume 4 of The Third Doctor Adventures. Nathan Nathan's back on his Star Trek thing again, and this time it's Star Trek: Lower Decks Series 4, which is nearing its end as we release this episode. You can also catch our coverage of Lower Decks on Untitled Star Trek Project. Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Richard is @RichardLStone, Todd is @toddbeilby,and Simon is @simonmoore72. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll forget we ever met you and get cross with you when you turn up on our doorstep with flowers and champagne. And more We are launching a new commentary podcast on Space:1999 next weekend, so keep an eye out for more details during the week. (The title is, for now, still a closely-guarded secret.) A couple of our podcasts are finished or on hiatus right now. Jodie into Terror was our flashcast on every episode of the Whittaker era, recorded just a couple of days after the broadcast of the episode. Bondfinger is our James Bond commentary podcast, which also covers some of our favourite spy-fi TV shows of the sixties and seventies. Maximum Power is back! Our podcast about Blakes 7, co-produced with the Trap One podcast, returns today with a pre-Series C episode based on the Big Finish Blakes 7 story Warship, set between Star One and Aftermath. We'll be back each week to cover each episode of Series C. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week we watched a surprisingly enjoyable episode of Star Trek: Voyager, which gave Janeway and Chatokay some time to pursue a mostly non-cringeworthy romantic relationship.

It's been a big week for very shocking (and totally not already been leaked for months) news as Bonnie Langford has been announced as an official returning companion in RTD2 - and Troy and Crispy have 2 big polls to catch up on! To top it all off, it's also time for the monthly series reflection episode, as the focus turns to Peter Capaldi's sophomore series of Doctor Who... from Ashildr and the Mire to Heaven Sent and the Hybrid, it's time to discuss what made Series 9 one of the more underrated series in the show's modern run! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/redcrispypro/message
When a show like Doctor Who starts talking about a hybrid, you can bet it's not talking about the latest Prius. Peter Capaldi's second season cooked up a perplexing mystery around this vaguely defined being with a bifurcated background, which came to a head in the series finale, "Hell Bent." The episode pays off a lot of plotlines — the return of Gallifrey and Clara's journey, primarily — but it also throws in a bunch of extras for… fun, I guess? In any case, it's nice to see Ashildr, Ohlia and the General of the War Council of Gallifrey again, not to mention the classic TARDIS console room. But about that hybrid, uh, we have questions…. We watch "Hell Bent" (Series 9, Episode 12) where the Doctor, now freed from his confession dial after billions of years, chooses to forgive his fellow Time Lords for their part in Clara's death... psych! Instead he choo-choo-chooses to go all out War Doctor Redux against Gallifrey! Whilst the Doctor's Revengering is occurring, he gives the General a total makeover, he brings back Clara as the unliving dead, plus tests Ashildr's recall at the End-Of-The-Universe. Not to be confused with the Restaurant At The End Of The Universe. Try the beef. He'll tell you he's delicious...
We watch "Face The Raven" (Series 9, Episode 10) where the Doctor and Clara meet back up with London street artist Rigsy to see his new neck tattoo. Whilst said 'appreciation' of bad decision making is occurring, the woman now known as Me (previously known as Ashildr) has set a trap for the Doctor, said trap causes the completely avoidable death of Clara, and the Doctor vows to avenge her death. Wow. What an amazing send off for a companion. Let's hope no future episodes undermine this emotional exit. Right? Oh crap...
We watch "The Woman Who Lived" (Series 9, Episode 6) where the Doctor and Clara re-encounter Ashildr from the prior episode some 800 years later (who would have thought that could coincidentally have happened...) whilst now known as Me. So Now-Known-As-Me has lived a bitter long time. N.K.A.Me holds the Doctor responsible for all the crappy bits of her long life. N.K.A.Me has an evil kitty (I know...redundant!) that shows her she should follow the less evil path. Will Me appear again? Me ain't telling. But John is saying yep. Me will.
We watch “The Girl Who Died” (Series 9, Episode 5) where the Whonamic Duo of the Doctor and Clara encounter a Viking ancestor of Steve's named Ashildr. Whilst said family reunion is occurring, Norse god Odin shows up proving Disney is no marvel of history, Ashildr dies after ensuring her peoples will live on, and the Doctor rewards Ashildr's sacrifice with kindly granting her the curse of immortality. Will Ashildr be bitter? She assuredly will. Did I not mention this was a two parter? I assuredly meant to. My bad.

Ben and Mark begin a two part episode all about the price of immortality with a discussion of 'The Girl Who Died' and 'The Woman Who Lived'. Did the Doctor know Ashildr would die? Isn't it fine to just sometimes cast the same actors again in larger roles and never refer to it? Is Maisie Williams any better in 'Game of Thrones'? We've never watched it. Is the Me character nothing more than an obfuscating Hybrid red herring? Also: Gallows humour, living through the violent establishment of European society, comedy and flippancy in Doctor Who and two exciting rounds of Degsey's Where Did it Come? Game. WARNING: MAY CONTAIN STAR TREK
At one point, every Doctor Who fan has asked themselves... What is the hybrid? Half-dalek, half-time lord? Half-human, half-mire? Half-zygon, half-human? Half time-lord, half-human? At the end of the universe, Ashildr concludes that the Hybrid is two beings. Two beings that will stand Lost on Gallifrey and break a billion billion headphones with discussion and laughter.
On the last episode of "The Omega Podcast" Ben shares his opinions on "Sleep No More", Face the Raven, Heaven Sent & Hell Bent and "The Husbands of River Song" and on Chris Chibnall taking over the show runner duties in 2018. Thanks for listening!

In a Nevada diner, the Doctor encounters a waitress physically identical to Clara, and begins to tell her a "story" about Clara; neither appears to recognize the other. In Gallifrey, attempts to have the Doctor imprisoned and executed. The Time Lord military instead pledges its loyalty to the Doctor. The Doctor has the Time Lords use an extraction chamber to retrieve Clara from her timeline at the instant of her death. The Doctor takes Clara and a TARDIS and escapes Gallifrey, attempting to take her far away enough that she will return fully to life. At the end of the universe, the Doctor encounters Ashildr; the two conclude the Hybrid is the Doctor and Clara together. The Doctor decides to remove Clara's memories of him, but Clara alters the device so it will randomly affect one of them, which ends up being the Doctor. In the present, the Doctor concludes his story, who encourages him to keep going. In the back room is Ashildr and the TARDIS console. It departs, leaving the Doctor with his own TARDIS. Clara decides to eventually return to Gallifrey, and instead sets off with Ashildr to explore the universe.
