It could be said of this week's guest that she, like the title of this week's show, is fascinating and daunting. And that this is a pull toward the things we're interested in, that we want to dive more deeply into, is the subject of this week's show. Edwidge Danticat is a powerhouse in the literary world who's written about immigration and poverty, exile and political upheaval, and so much more. There's much to learn from the wisdom of a writer like Danticat who has been well and widely published for three decades, and who offers up insights across form—from memoir, to fiction, to essay. Today's Battle Drill Devotional: Be the Same Person in Private as You Are in Public This week, following Mothers' Day, we are considering the character of the Woman of Valour described in Proverbs 31. Her values are ones we should all cultivate in our lives, with God's help. Read Proverbs 31:10-31. Whether you are a mother or even a woman or not, how do you feel when you read these words? Daunted? As if you have been confronted by an overwhelming ideal? Who on earth can live up to that job description? you might be thinking. Who makes their own clothes, gets up in the middle of the night to ensure everyone else is ready for the day, takes care of family business, works into the night, gives to those in need, is always strong and dignified, is always ready with a wise word, but can also relax and laugh a little, without taking yourself too seriously, only to collapse on to the sofa each day to be appreciated by your husband and children (or wife, family or friends)? You would be forgiven for giving a nervous laugh and thinking, no way! But these words are a poem. They are not meant to be taken literally. This is a complete picture of what wisdom looks like, a culmination of the preceding thirty chapters on that subject. What it tells us is how we should do the things we do, not what we should do. It is about our character, not about our deeds. If we are wise, we will do the things we do with integrity. There will be no difference between what we do in public and what we do in private. Then, people will be able to trust us. This is most proven in how we handle other people's stuff – their money, their possessions, even their ministry. If we're honest with other people's money, if we look after their possessions well and if we work diligently under the authority of others, then we will show integrity and people will trust us. THINK IT OVER Think about the following: How does God test your integrity? Do people trust you?
Daunted by starting your first podcast? Trust me, it's much easier than when I entered the scene. The world of podcasting used to be super bro-ey and technical. So-called “gurus” made you feel like you had to build an entire studio in your basement and buy special mixers just to get your message out. All of that changed with She Podcasts, the now 21,000-member strong online community and live event supporting podcasters from all walks of life on their journey. Meet my dear friends and the founders — Jessica Kupferman & Elsie Escobar — in this week's episode. In this episode of the podcast, we talk about: Elsie and Jessica's entrepreneurial journey from Facebook group to 21,000-member community and live event One of the biggest factors behind their Facebook group's 60% leap in growth since 2018 Jessica and Elsie's secret to building iron-clad trust with their Facebook group and fans The magnetic power of "doing the right thing" Factors to consider before monetizing your thriving online community What you can learn from them about maintaining a healthy business partnership Making people feel seen and heard vs taking your podcast to the "next level" Finding connection with fellow podcasters with completely different lifestyles, interests, and areas of expertise Where the women behind She Podcasts see social media going in the next couple years The pressure to constantly "be on" with social media and how Elsie protects her peace …and more! Someone invited her on a podcast and instantly she was hooked. She wanted to be a guest on more, but when she took a look at business shows, she found that they were a lot of “young, white dudes interviewing other young, white dudes.” Exasperated, she started her first podcast and instantly gravitated to other women who were also podcasting then. After attending a conference, she started a Facebook group called “Women Who Podcast” and added the other amazing women podcasters she spent time with, including Elsie Escobar. Little did she know that Elsie was a podcasting veteran who knew TONS of women who wanted to join the group, and she had been thinking about starting a women's podcasting group. To make a long story short, Elsie had some amazing ideas, Jess was great at helping them come to life. Together they are dedicated to helping women overcome whatever obstacles stand in their way in order to be able to express themselves, specifically through the medium of podcasting. Now her passion for food and architecture works together to create amazing ice cream novelties and empower fellow women to follow their dreams. Hello to you listening in Athens, Greece!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey. The other day I was talking with my friend and coaching colleague Jeffrey Tan in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He's my December 2021 guest on Stories From (mostly) Women Who Walk.I mentioned a project I have on Whidbey that feels daunting to me. Jeffrey suggested acclimating like he acclimated to thinner air when trekking the high altitude mountains on the Annapurna Circuit within central Nepal. [To acclimate (or acclimatize) means that one adjusts physiologically or behaviorally to a change in environment in order to remain well and healthy in the new conditions.]As he and his group reached higher elevations the sherpas led them a short distance farther to stop, rest, breathe, and then return to camp. This up-and-back routine was repeated over a few days until the hikers adjusted to the decreased oxygen levels.Practical Tip: When you feel daunted, anxious, maybe even short of breath contemplating the project ahead of you, take time to acclimate. Slow down, approach your project with small steps, take breaks when necessary. You will find you have what it takes to go the distance. Guaranteed! 60 Seconds is your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, including Android, and join us next time! Enjoy this webinar replay for a helpful introduction, then read along with #100daysofdante: http://100daysofdante.org/ One of the greatest literary works of the Medieval era (if not the greatest), Dante's Comedy can be intimidating for beginners. The imagery is often bizarre and at times disturbing. The allusions and themes are often difficult for modern readers to grasp the first time through. Those few brave souls who attempt Inferno sometimes grow weary and don't attempt to complete the full poem, thus abandoning themselves in a hellish unfinished story! But do not “abandon all hope, ye who enter here!” In this webinar we discuss: Who is Dante, when did he live, and why did he write the Comedy? What is the Comedy's place in literary history? Why is Dante worth reading today? What in the world is going on here? What themes should we be looking for as we read Dante's Comedy? (hint: LOVE) How can we avoid getting burned out in hell (Inferno), persevere through Purgatorio, and enjoy the full radiance of Paradiso? and MORE! Let this be the year you begin your journey with Dante. You don't have to read alone. Join Kristen Rudd and read the entire Comedy 1 canto at a time beginning September 1: https://www.facebook.com/groups/100daysofdante/ Join Wes Callihan for a year-long course on Dante: https://www.circeinstitute.org/atrium More homeschool encouragement with Amy Sloan: https://humilityanddoxology.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/humilityanddoxology/message

In THE AGITATORS: Three Friends Who Fought for Abolition and Women's Rights, Dorothy Wickenden--longtime executive editor at The New Yorker--traces the history of women's progressive politics in the US through the lives of Harriet Tubman, Martha Wright, and Frances Seward. Before women could be elected and participate in Congress, they made their impact behind closed doors--and readers get the story of abolition, the Underground Railroad, the early women's rights movement, the Civil War, and much more, told from the letters the women wrote to each other. It extends over 40 years--from the time when Tubman was still enslaved to two decades after the Civil War, in a radically changed United States. Dorothy Wickenden is the author of Nothing Daunted and The Agitators and has been the executive editor of The New Yorker since January 1996. She also writes for the magazine and is the moderator of its weekly podcast The Political Scene. A former Nieman Fellow at Harvard, Wickenden was national affairs editor at Newsweek from 1993-1995, and before that was the longtime executive editor at The New Republic. She lives with her husband in Westchester, New York.

Change happens every year in media across radio, television, newspaper and online. Audiences in short don't like change as they tend to be creatures of habit and enjoy stability. This is more evident when it comes to radio audiences who see their presenters as a member of the family. One such talkback radio station in Perth, 6PR made significant changes to the line-up and is off and running with an all-new look. Gareth Parker is the new breakfast host on 6PR doing it solo. He transitions from the Morning show where media giant Liam Bartlett has moved into. The challenge of hosting the show on your own is big enough despite also taking over from WA's favourite son Steve Mills and departing popular broadcaster and Lord Mayor of Perth Basil Zempilas. Gareth is a journalist and a media professional who is very clear with what he wants to achieve - even though he admits to working it out as he goes this first two weeks on air in the 5am - 9am breakfast show. When first asked if he was interested in taking on breakfast his response was "Daunted but excited… it needed to be for the right reasons. What sort of show do you want? If you want a different style of a show that is a bit newsier then let's explore the opportunity.” Right through the podcast you will get a feel for the man that has been given the keys to this very important shift of radio. He is open with his advice to communicators and PR people. “Media professionals ditch the jargon and tell the story.” He reminds us we do not need to complicate our messages, make it easy to understand at the other end. Where and how he sources his stories is a good reminder to all that they can come from anywhere. There is a quick wit and a rather cheeky yet dry sense of humour behind the crafty journalist. His early critics and the social media bubble of negative nannies claim that fun and lighter side of the broadcaster is beyond him. Gareth does not want to be a Millsy and Baz nor could he be. He just wants to be himself and help wake up Perth each morning in his style. Gareth even gave us a scoop that is worth listening to the podcast to find out what it is.

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.Back in what was the very worst time of my life I was assigned a prayer protector. I’d never had a prayer protector before and I was Erlinda’s first assignment. In the beginning we shared coffee and conversation; but then she decided we needed to run. We took up running together three mornings a week. What I didn’t know at first was that Erlinda was part mountain goat and had run marathons. I could never catch her; but that wasn’t the point. It was all about getting me to put one foot in front of the other. And move on. That first mile or two of hills was always the same - a biatchee. We ran them anyway.Practical tip: Oftentimes the move we want to make feels right but looks daunting, maybe scary, certainly not fun. What I learned is this: take those first steps. The ones in front of you. Get them over with. Now you have open road. Follow that. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. Speaking of magic, would you share a nice rating/review on Apple Podcasts and when you come back bring your friends and rellies. As someone with anxiety, the prospect of attending 'business' events (cue big crowds, new people and foreign venues) has never been an easy thing for me. And whilst 4 years ago I couldn't even get on a train without ending up in a total state, I now find myself turning up to events with a sense of confidence, despite that daunted feeling not going away. But don't be fooled, it's not been an overnight thing. In this episode I share 5 encouragements / tips for anyone who also feels a little nervous about IRL connection, hopefully passing on a little of what's helped me overcome and live alongside my anxiety. _____ Find out more about the SheCanSheDid Midweek Mingle events here. I'll be at London / Bristol and am part of the panel at Manchester! I'd love to see you there.
