The voices are the same but the podcast is different….. or something! Join Drew, Brent, Michele and James in our annual tradition of reviewing a recently animated "missing" Doctor Who story. This time, it's the turn of The Celestial Toymaker. Who & Company is the wonderful podcast hosted by Brent and Drew that has it's roots firmly in Doctor Who fandom, however the subject matter goes far beyond the confines of the Whoniverse. Once a year however, the parallel worlds of our two shows converge and the focus is on squarely on sixties Who. W&C has a distinctly different tone to that of the DWP. It's an easy listen, more laid back and less rushed. So pull up a lounger, grab a mug of hot chocolate, get comfy and listen to four friends chew the fat about a classic William Hartnell story in Episode 86 of Who & Company, also known as Special 34 of the DWP. Enjoy the show!
Our ninth season begins with our annual animated review with DWP co-hosts James & Michele! This year, it's Hartnell goodness with The Celestial Toymaker. Does the unique style of animation on this release actually make it better? Tune in and find out!
This week, the Pop Culture Historians return to THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER and evaluate the new animation of the four-part story. Does having a visualization improve our experience? Is the 3D animation as bad as people feared? How great is it to be back in the First Doctor era? All this and more will be discussed in this special holiday episode!
Send us a text"Firing a Doctor Who cake up your arse"In their final look at the 60th anniversary specials, Ben and Mark welcome back the Toymaker by pairing up The Giggle with the unmade 1980s serial The Nightmare Fair. While the sense of an ending marks the 60th miniseries out as something special, have subsequent episodes of Doctor Who ruined the party? And after almost 60 years, has anyone got a handle on how to write for the Toymaker? Also: Mark explains why Alex Horne is the true Toymaker, Ben recounts a Rab C Nesbitt locations tour, and we ponder what the Doctor Who equivalent of Spock's helmet might be. Daft podcast reaches 70 episodes! No, we don't know how either. To celebrate, Time Ram takes Hartnell story 'The Celestial Toymaker' and re-jigs it for the 21st century and Matt Smith. In the process we uncover some unlikely guest stars, have a spring fitted and go 'full Scottish'. It'll make sense later. Or not. Crackerjack!!
It's a full house, as we are joined by both Alan Siler and Diana Birney to discuss the recent animation of The Celestial Toymaker. Will it be the best animation yet, or nothing more than psychedelic nightmare fuel? Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of the controversial animation style, whether Dodo is the worst companion of all time, the racist under/overtones of the story, possible other animation styles for future missing episode animations, and whether this story might benefit from a full remake by David Lynch. Of course, we consider whether the animation actually improves the story. On the one hundredth and eigtheenth edition of Reality Bomb, we have our longest episode yet as we catch up on all the news we've missed while we were off (plus a few other things!) First, Graeme Burk talks with Lacy Baugher Milas of Den of Geek about Doctor Who's return to SDCC after five years away. We finish our review of the latest season, and look to the future, as Sage Young and Sanjay Lago discuss Rogue, The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death. And we look to the past, or rather how the past is being re-presented through new blu-ray and streaming releases with Jon Arnold and Max Kaschevsky... which leads nicely into Gallery of the Underrated, where James Cooray Smith (of Graeme's favourite Doctor Who-themed newsletter, The Psychic Paper -- which you should really subscribe!) brings the recently CG animated missing story, The Celestial Toymaker. Plus Hot Take Roulette with KatyBeth Schmid... and Spoiler Cops concludes!

We discuss the recent animation of the William Hartnell story, The Celestial Toymaker. Overall, we think it successfully presented a boring, at times, story that is hard to follow with moving images for episodes 1–3 missing. Ben would like to see the animators push it even further away from the original broadcast visuals. David would have preferred the guest cast's likeness to be better expressed in the animation designs for the clowns, cards, and toys. The opening music is from The Celestial Toymaker, incidental music composed by Dudley Simpson. The closing music is "Push It" by Salt-n-Pepa. We recorded this episode on 22 July 2024.

Hey, Who fans and welcome to Episode 405.It's been a while since we reviewed an animated lost story and what better story to dive into than the recently released, very Marmite offering, The Celestial Toymaker. We've not spoken about it much on the podcast other than covering the release announcements (although our roving reporter Maria did a great round-up of the cinema release at The BFI) so it's time to see what all the fuss is about. As is traditional after we do a season of hot takes on the podcast, we regroup to discuss the season as a whole. Did some episodes go up or down in our estimation, after the initial hot take viewing? What did the rest of fandom think? How do we feel it went overall? Before then, news from the past month including our thoughts - and the BBCs - on Doctor Who ratings, as well as saying goodbye to legend of the show, William Russell. We also catch up with some classic Doctor Who in the form of the Celestial Toymaker animation, and a re-watch of The Ark. And Rob's really selling off his Doctor Who collection in earnest! This was recorded very much in between all sorts of other things but everyone seems to quite enjoy it when it's all a bit shambolic so nopthing has been done to hide that. Let's be honest, The Celestial Toymaker itself is a bit shambolic - and host Toby Hadoke has gone on record before to say that this episode might be the worst instalment of Classic Who in the 60s, if not of all time. So the whole accentuating the positive might be a bit tricky mightn't it? Let's see how he gets on... and maybe guest Kieran Highman can help :) Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. And we're on to the second instalment of The Celestial Toymaker, with doughty advocate Kieran Highman doing his best to eprsuade host Toby hadoke that this is an underappreciated story. It is also, it has to be said, a controversial instalment, and this idsm picked ovr in some (and some qould say excruciating) detail. Ah well - we mean well. Well, as all tongues are a-wagging about the new animation of The Celestial Toymaker, here is a podcast recorded just before the news of its resurrection was announced, which takes us back to the source material. Now then - and here's the catch - this is a happy-clappy podcast about how wondeful Doctor who is, and the last time you host Toby Hadoke watched this story (or at least a recon of it) he absolutely loathed it. So strap yourselves in - there's no way he can win this one, unless he cheats (and as people cheating seems to be the entire plot of this story, he'd be in good company). See, we're moaning already and we're only at the description. Lovely fan Kieran Highman is our special guest. He will, for sure, make a staunch Celestial advocate : and that is what this is all about! Yes, Phil & Scott visited the BFI on London's glittering South Bank to watch the freshly animated The Celestial Toymaker, starring William Hartnell, Peter Purves, Jackie Lane and Michael Gough. In a return to the animation style used for The Web of Fear, fandom was once again up in arms at what was perceived as a step backwards for animating missing episodes. How far will two guys go to learn more about The Toymaker? Will they endure telesnaps and amateur animations? They will! With The Giiggle in our not-to-distant future, it was high time we got to know this immortal craftsman with a penchant for games. So we did our best to watch The Celestial Toymaker (and will likely revisit it when the animated version comes out). We also have a boatload of Who News and the slew of story notes, so grab a drink and get comfortable!
