Welcome back to our “Beasts” Double Bill! Last time, we watched "The Dummy" from the infamous anthology series by General Witchfinders hero Nigel Kneale. We now leave the smashed-up movie set of "The Dummy" with its snarling Y-fronts-wearing jilted actor and join Angie and Roger Truscott in their secluded Hampshire home for "During Barty's Party." This episode features the only actual 'beasts' as the main threat: in this case, large, super-evolved, intelligent rats. Elizabeth Sellars plays Angie Truscott, known for "The Mummy's Shroud," and Anthony Bate plays Roger Truscott, heavily channeling Michael Bryant's Peter Brock character from "The Stone Tape." Bate was cast as Doctor Fendehman in "Image of the Fendahl" but dropped out, with Denis Lill taking the role. Colin Bell plays Barty Wills, the local DJ hosting the titular "Barty's Party," his regular rock and roll radio show. Like the rest of the cast, Bell is only heard, not seen. He is seen, however, in "The Sea Devils" and "Invasion of the Dinosaurs," both Jon Pertwee stories. Norman Mitchell plays the Police Sergeant. Supposedly, at 18, Mitchell walked from Sheffield to London to become an actor, leading to nearly 200 film appearances, 500 radio broadcasts, and an estimated 2,000 television appearances. He developed a niche of playing policemen, appearing as such in 12 episodes of "Worzel Gummidge," "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (more on this very soon), "And Now the Screaming Starts!", "Oliver!" and the first Doctor Who Christmas episode, "The Feast of Steven." John Rhys-Davies plays Peter Newell. Famous for his parts in Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Rhys-Daviesis a supporter of the British Conservative Party, Rhys-Davies was a radical leftist in the '60s, who tried to heckle a young Tory MP. But the parliamentarian "shot down the first two hecklers in such brilliant fashion that I decided I ought for once to shut up and listen". The MP was Margaret Thatcher. He is a supporter of Brexit. On 25 April 2019, he appeared as a panellist on the BBC's Question Time. His conduct on the programme towards politician Caroline Lucas was later described as "thuggish and sexist" by some viewers. We continue our journey through all of Doctor Who, as we discuss the third serial of Season 15: Image of the Fendahl. Received fan wisdom has this as being one of the better stories of the season… however, we're in our controversial era this season – will we find gothic Who's final story be a worthy last hurrah, or will we find it to be as limp as a salt-covered leech? Listen in to find out!   Join us as we discuss Benedict Cumberbatch's Mum, Big Finish's inevitable “Leaky the Dog” series (featuring Jackie Tyler), the sloppy kitchen sink approach of lazy representations of the occult, Reilly's dislike of squelching, and the Doctor's hypocrisy with Time Lords. We also ask the important questions like “why does Leela look like she's going to Coachella?”   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). In a priory near the village of Fetchborough, four scientists, Adam Colby, Max Stael, Thea Ransome and Dr. Fendelman, are doing tests on a human skull they found in Kenya, apparently twelve million years old. When Dr. Fendelman starts using a sonic time scan, trying to get an image of the owner of the skull, the skull itself seems to react, locking onto Thea and releasing something in the priory grounds that kills a passing hiker, who eventually totally disintegrates. The scan catches the attention of the Fourth Doctor and Leela when they are pulled down to Earth by it. They set off to find it before it creates a continuum implosion and destroys the planet. They separate and Leela finds the cottage of ‘Mother' Tyler, a local modern-day witch gifted with psychic powers. The Doctor ends up narrowly avoiding death at the hands of the creature created by the skull, which then kills the leader of a detachment of guards Fendelman has brought in after the death of the hiker, sealing everyone into the priory. Ma Tyler then encounters the creature but survives and is saved from going into psychic shock by the Doctor, who by this time has worked out that the thing is a Fendahleen, a creature from his planet's mythology, supposedly destroyed when the Fifth Planet broke up. He makes his way into the priory and finds the skull, which tries to kill him. Leela saves him and they go off to the Fifth Planet, only to find that the Time Lords sealed the planet in a Time Loop, making all proper records invisible even to them. Thea, meanwhile, has been gradually converted into the new core of the Fendahl, a creature that feeds off life energy and leaves nothing behind. Stael, leader of the local black magic cult, recognises this and believes he can control the Fendahl and use it to dominate. He and his followers capture Colby, kill Fendelman, who was actually influenced through his genetics by the Fendahl to bring this about, and set up the Sonic Time scanner to power the skull and Thea's final transformation. The Doctor, Leela, Ma Tyler and her grandson Jack head for the priory only to find the Fendahl core has formed and is converting the cult members into Fendahleen, to form the full circle. The Doctor frees Colby and helps Stael shoot himself after killing one of the new Fendahleen, in turn finding out that they are fatally allergic to salt, leaving the Fendahl core two short of the twelve it needs to be complete and form a gestalt. The Doctor rigs the scanner to implode upon itself and grabs the now dormant skull, leaving with the others only just before the priory is destroyed, along with the Fendahl core and the remaining Fendahleen. The Doctor and Leela then leave and plan to dump the skull near a supernova, thus ending the Fendahl race forever.

Among other things, they discuss whether or not Colby is the most annoying character in Classic Who, baby Fendahline plushies, and the plausibility of the Fendahl's plan to take over humanity. It's a good one this month, folks, so get yourself a piece of fruitcake, sit back, relax, and listen!

An ancient evil. Misguided scientists. If you're thinking, "Oh, we simply have to get these guys together," you might be a Doctor Who writer from the '70s. But if you're going to go ahead and mix this pair of volatile ingredients, it's probably best to throw in at least one wisecracking supporting character, a few paper-mâché monsters, and some ambitious ideas about the true nature of human evolution. Put it all into a delightfully sinister horror-movie backdrop on the English countryside, and you've got Image of the Fendahl, the last stab of Tom Baker's "scary" era. A museum? On a planet, you say? Amazingly, that’s just where TARDIS brings Doctor Who and chums in The Space Museum. But the problems here are worse than an expensive gift shop, a blocked urinal or a coach party of feral school kids. For the planet Xeros is occupied by the moaning Morocks, a race only slightly less pathetic than the indigenous teenage beatniks, among whom subjugation raises barely/only an eyebrow. And our plucky travellers have problems of their own, chiefly their future starring roles in the most boring tourist attraction since the financially disastrous Sensorites’ Sexy Sashes exhibition. Our heroes deal with the trauma in their own individual ways though, with the Doctor kipping for an episode, Vicki stirring up the students, Babs having a smoke break and Ian chewing her cardigan. Will the time travellers evade their fate? Would you buy a used glass from Vicki? What day is Nude Day on the TARDIS? And did Jim and Martin find themselves informed and entertained by The Space Museum or is it just a dusty old relic? Listen to find out! Many of you may still be locked up with your family but, with any luck, your house-mates don’t include a glowing alien skull, a gun-toting Teuton and a creepy occultist. Even Benylin Bandersnatch’s mum would be of little comfort, haunted as she is by a noisy, slimy creature (named Adam Colby). The TARDIS team come to the rescue but K9’s lost his voice, Leela’s lost some of her hair and the Doctor’s lost his ability to distinguish Jelly Babies from Liquorice Allsorts. Luckily, the Tylers (not those Tylers!) are on hand to dispense cake, rock salt and Mummerset premonitions. But did Image of the Fendahl give Jim and Martin a burst of primal power or suck out their collective life-force? Listen to find out! With all the best intentions (and the glowing skull of Eustace) we set out to fully enjoy this horror story from Series 15...but there are a few bumps along the way. Performances are enjoyable from both Baker and Jameson, and the supporting cast does a great job of punching up their roles to suit the story's brooding horror. The script from Chris Boucher gives us a buffet-table of entertainment options to pick at. But is the meal satisfying once the dishes are cleared?

First off, quick production note: For whatever reason, I kept calling Malorie Blackman “Marjorie Blackman” in my review. And I have no idea why. I might’ve just been nervous from not having recorded in so long. Or I might’ve been struggling with having less notes in front of me than I usually do. I’m not sure. Either way, I deeply apologize for getting her name wrong. How embarrassing! Anyway, aside from all that, this is honestly a difficult episode for me to publish. As I stated in my ‘State of the Podcast’ blog post, I try my very best to keep things on my show (mostly) positive and try to look for the best in the show. But, at the end of the day, I also have to be honest about my reactions and so, after a lot of soul searching, I made this episode chatting about my feelings in regards to Series 11. And, yes, many of those feelings are negative. So, if that’s something you’re avoiding, being that my intention is to not kill people’s squee, this might possibly be an episode to skip. I do hope you give it a listen, though. I did my best to frame my criticisms as fairly as I could and also tried my best not to devolve into just mindless ranting. Also, on a positive note, I discuss what is on the horizon for my show, with a series where I’m going to be rejuvenating the podcast by indulging in far more positive chats about my favorite show. Anyway, again, I hope you will all join me as I talk about through some pretty hard feelings from this past season of Doctor Who -- along with some bonus Happy Fandom Time squee in there, to temper any angst, of course! With just a week to go until the 2011 Doctor Who Christmas Special, the Three Who Rule cast their eyes back to a simpler time, before River Song was related to the Ponds and when a baby could turn into a puddle of goo and still be broadcast pre-watershed. Yes, "A Good Man Goes to War" was our commentary this week, with all the usual off-topic and off-color discussion you've come to know and somewhat tolerate. Add chatter of our live show at Gallifrey 2012 (two months from now!), news of departing companions, Season 7's structure, and Fendahl action figures, and you've got yourself a podcast!  Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com

With the news light in the wake of Series 5 ending, the Three Who Rule were glad of a commentary to tide them over. Image of the Fendahl was the focal point thanks to the powers of the randomizer, a story that stands out for one of our hosts while merely exists for the other two. Come join the fun of the west country accents, slash writers going crazy, lost plots, a golden Wanda Ventham and just about the darkest Doctor Who story ever! And what could possibly be in store for the next installment of the summer commentary series? Check out the show notes at www.radiofreeskaro.com.

This week's Miniscope saw an appearance by Chris Boucher, best known not only for his scripts for Robots of Death, The Face of Evil and Image of the Fendahl, but also for writing for Blake's 7 (acting as script editor for the show from 1978 to 1981) and Star Cops and....his segment consisted of six minutes. The remaining time was filled with the trademarked digressionary banter known and tolerated by RFS fandom, ranging from a list of Gallifrey 2010's many exciting panels to the strange character known as Itchy Spider-man.
