Not very often does a new brewery knock it out of the park with their third batch of beer and their first IPA but Sam and the team at Ketch Brewing did! Celestial Navigation is a crushable San Diego Style IPA that is well balanced with tropical fruit aroma, and a light piney bitterness. Trust me there is a reason this beer has won A LOT of awards.

Join us in this enlightening episode as we dive into the creative mind of renowned conductor and composer Fouad Fakhouri of the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra in Michigan and the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra in Texas. During our conversation we explore the fascinating similarities and contrasts between the worlds of visual arts and music and discover how the principles of art and design transcend these creative disciplines. Fouad Fakhouri was born in Lebanon and comes from four generations of musicians. His childhood in war-torn Lebanon played a significant role in shaping his musical compositions. The tumultuous civil war deeply influenced his artistic expression. At age seventeen, he traveled to the United States to begin his college studies at University of North Texas where he obtained a Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition from the University of North Texas, and a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting, as well as a Master of Music in Composition/Theory from Pennsylvania State University. Currently the influence of living in New York City inspires Fouad. His work often reflects the city's traffic, chaos, and conflict, creating an expressively percussive quality to his music. On Friday evening, October 25 Fouad will be leading the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra in a program curated by him as the musical director and conductor of the symphony. The evening is titled Green vs. Blue: The Concert Tailgate Experience. Art Lewis, a local radio personality joins the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra to narrate Copland's Lincoln Portrait. The concert is comprised entirely of music from American composers and featuring Rouse's Symphony No. 1. Valerie will be painting live alongside the orchestra for Michael Torke's pieces Green and Bright Blue Music, and there will be the Michigan Premiere of local pianist Catherine McMichael's Celestial Navigation. Recently, we took a look at GPS and the space science that makes it work. This time, we're going back to an era when navigators had nothing but their equipment and the stars to tell them where they were, even on the open ocean.Celestial navigation combined the sextant, almanac and chronometer to make a reliable navigation system that just needed one other thing, the sun and the stars... This week I am talking about how to become Penny! LOL. I get asked this question A LOT. As in, how did I become an instructor, how do I get to sail offshore, how do I get people to pay me to teach them, etc. So many questions about my sailing path, so here it is! Where it all started... I am one of the lucky ones. I started my sailing journey (apparently) at about a year old when I was tucked under my grandfather's arm and shot off into the St Lawrence River on our laser. There are variations of this story including me being tied off to the mast, but I doubt that! Anyway, I was baptized by the salt water at an early age and moved up the ranks bailing the bilges of the boats I was sailing on. I spent my summers sailing in the Gaspe with our neighbour, Betty Cornell. She had two beautiful wooden boats that needed A LOT of bailing between tides. I soaked up every bit of knowledge from her and my grandfather and eventually began formal sailing lessons with the Canadian Yachting Association at the ripe old age of 5. I absolutely loved dinghy sailing and I worked my way up to Silver Sail V before switching over to coaching. At first my interest in earning money outweighed my interest in actually coaching, but eventually I discovered a love for teaching others. I loved the challenge of trying to explain something to someone in different ways. It kept my skills as a sailor growing. The path to success At the age of 15 I volunteered to coach for a summer because I was too young to officially be hired. I also started exploring keelboat sailing at this age and realized I enjoyed going home dry and unbruised. So, by 17 I completed my Bareboat Skipper certification (Intermediate Cruising), and by 21 I was an Advanced Cruising Instructor living on a 40' CS Merlin (Great Habit) up in Georgian Bay. My summers were spent cruising around Beckwith Island, Giants Tomb Island, Beausoleil Island(s), and so many other beautiful places. I was teaching for Harbour West Sailing Adventures, and in order to get our boats from Hamilton up to Georgian Bay each season, we would offer an Advanced Cruising boat delivery course. We would start off in Hamilton, head out to Lake Ontario, then south through the Welland Canal and down to Lake Erie. Lake Erie was always fun with the shipping. fishing, UXOs and shipwrecks, nevermind if the winds picked up. We would head West along the length of Lake Erie then head north to the Lake St Clair and through the St Clair River. Navigating up that river at night will cause seizures! So many navigational aids all blinking at different intervals. Then we would arrive in Lake Huron and make our way North-East to Georgian Bay. Our home base in Georgian Bay was the Midland City Harbour, so we would go past Tobermory and Flowerpot Island, and we'd give the inmates at the Penetanguishene Correctional Facility. All the extras... I am a lifelong learner. I have always really enjoyed learning new things, so when I jumped into the world of keel boating, naturally I also jumped into navigation. When I was 17 I completed my Coastal Navigation course and 20 when I took Celestial Navigation. Now Coastal Navigation has continued to be used over the years, however Celestial has not, so I'll be redoing that course this winter with a colleague Lars. As I've always been around water, swimming is also a big part of my life. I completed all of my swimming levels and became a swim coach and lifeguard when I was 16. For some of the youth sailing camps I would coach sailing in the morning and then coach swimming in the afternoon! It was a great program to get kids comfortable on the water. I also take a first aid course every two years and I was a ski patroller for a few winters (to help get through the cold months!)

In the early days of sailing and navigation, sailors had to stay close to the coast. They looked to the shore for landmarks to guide them. Hills, cliffs, churches, and windmills could all give a navigator key clues to his location. As local knowledge grew, and more people navigated coastal waters, books showcasing the horizon and specific landmarks regarding your route became available for purchase. A sailor knew as long as he could see land, he wasn't truly lost. By keeping an eye on the coast, you had that rough idea of your location. Today's ID the Future spotlights the new book Animal Algorithms: Evolution and the Mysterious Origin of Ingenious Instincts. The author, Eric Cassell, joins host and Baylor computer engineering professor Robert J. Marks to discuss the groundbreaking book and, in particular, the chapters on some of the animal kingdom's most stunning navigators—the arctic tern, homing pigeons, the monarch butterfly, and the desert ant, among others. Cassell has degrees in biology and engineering, and he draws on these and his decades of professional expertise in aircraft navigation systems to show that these creatures instinctively employ navigational technologies that humans have only recently mastered. According to Cassell, their skills are driven by sophisticated algorithms embedded in their brains. But what created these algorithms Read More › Source

The West Wing was enormously popular in the world and in our home growing up. Both Emma and Harry have watched it a few times...okay maybe more than a few times. The advent of streaming introduced this show to a whole new generation and for a significant part of the population it has been a cathartic response to recent political events. Both those factors have triggered multiple West Wing watch-along podcasts. This week Emma and Harry watched Season 1 Episode 15 of the West Wing, titled Celestial Navigation, and then listened to 3 podcasts all breaking down that episode.Podcasts listened to this week:The West Wing WeeklyThe West Wing ThingWinging It: The West Wing Podcast

And a round of applause for our friends in Switzerland, who put the BSA podcast on the charts there. Hooray! . 03:20 – Settle in for a mini-lesson on the houses of initiative and leadership, AKA the angular houses (the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th). These houses fix us in place on the map of time and correspond to the Sun’s location just before sunrise and sunset, and just before midnight and midday. (Interested in a tutoring session with April? Yes, please!) . 04:36 – The 1st house: your personality, physical body, and personal defense. . 06:53 – Think of the houses as polarities, not simply one unit. Opposite the 1st house is the 7th – they go together like pie and ice cream! The 1st house corresponds with sunrise, and the 7th with sunset. The 7th house is also about joining forces with others, and how we compete (which includes your rivals and “open enemies”). . 09:13 – The 4th house corresponds with midnight and is located at the bottom of the chart (the IC). The 10th house corresponds with noon and is located at the top of the chart (the MC). Here’s a handy cheatsheet to give you a visual! . 10:05 – The 4th house is where you are rooted in the world: your family, security, and nourishment, as well as the defense of these things. . 10:25 – The 10th house: your social status, pursuing your calling or career, defending your reputation. . 11:25 – Do you have planets in the angular houses? Do most people have a planet in an angular house? What if your angular houses are empty? Here’s what all that means! . 13:18 – April’s book The Essential Guide to Practical Astrology has a whole chapter (Chapter 9: Celestial Navigation) on angular houses! Pick up a copy if you don’t have one, won’t you? Oprah recommends it! . 13:43 – Venus, at 15.11 Pisces, squares the Lunar Nodes on the Sabian symbol, “The flow of inspiration” (March 9). The North Node in Gemini is on, “A woman suffragist orating.” And the South Node is on, “Seagulls watching a ship.” Perhaps the path forward is in speaking out – especially as it relates to relationships, money, and values. . 16:14 – A two-fer: The Sun joins up with Neptune on March 10, and a few days later Venus does the same on March 13. All of this action happens on the same Sabian symbol: 21 Pisces, “A little white lamb, a child, and a Chinese servant.” April sees this symbol as one that highlights relationships based on caring and oversight; it’s a reset for creative and relationship cycles to attune to the oneness of all things. Jen wonders if the Sun will pass along a dreamy message – perhaps something about imagination, compassion, healing, or spirituality. Neptune then whispers to Venus, “Here’s the dream: Care for each other, help each other! And oh hey, maybe save the taxes ‘til next week!” (Review Episode 23, Talkin’ Taurus and the Void (Of Course!) Moon to hear our first conversation about this symbol.) . 21:53 – Speaking of angular houses… this week’s Moonwatch segment is brought to you by our non-imaginary sponsor: Tenth House Creative! You can also find them on IG: @tenthhousecreative . 24:45 – **MOONWATCH ** This week brings a New Moon at 23.03 Pisces (March 13) on the Sabian symbol, “An inhabited island,” which speaks to the ways in which we are both together and apart from others. Pisces, in general, is a sign that needs time away; it soaks up all the surrounding vibes and then needs a rest. Maybe watch the movie Cast Away while you are on your retreat? . 26:30 – New Moons are a good time to plant something fresh: They start new 28-day,6-month, and 2.5-year cycles. This New Moon also features four planets – the Sun, Moon, Venus, and Neptune - close together in Pisces, all making a helpful sextile to Pluto, lending some spine and grounding. The four-planet pile-up is also square the Nodes, because we are at the midpoint of eclipse season! (April’s eclipse report, “Followed by a Moonshadow,” will help you get ready!) . 28:36 – The green light we’ve been waiting for: This New Moon also features Mars in Gemini trine Saturn in Aquarius, a get-it-done aspect. Anima is the Orion Spacecraft Simulations Lab Manager & xEMU Spacesuit Engineer at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Anima recently moved to Texas after 20 years in California to pursue her dream to become a NASA astronaut. Her journey has been a long one, but always determined, driven, sometimes sacrificing, and never wavering. Her steadfast and unyielding approach has finally come to fruition with a formal astronaut application when NASA opened the applications and invited candidates to apply for a 30 day window in March. Since she was a young child, Anima wanted to be an astronaut. Growing up in India, a clear path toward achieving her dream was just not available. So she moved, and made her own path towards the stars… Anima came to the US as a software engineer in 2000. Becoming a U.S. Citizen was a 12 year endeavor. She just finished her 3rd Masters Degree. Anima explains her MANY NASA adventures and endeavors, including looking for life on other planets (exoplanets), how Kepler worked, and Anima believes there is life in the universe and we are capable of finding it. “I don’t want to die thinking, ‘what if I tried?’ I want to die with the satisfaction knowing I tried!. If I get selected (to be a NASA astronaut), I would be the happiest person on this Earth. It will be like my life has come full circle. All my life I’ve worked towards this goal, and it would be all worth it!”-Anima from Casual Space Podcast Advice for young students and want-to-be astronauts: “I don’t know how far I will get, but I am enjoying the journey! Have a career you see yourself doing every day and enjoy it!” About Anima: Anima Patil-Sabale is an Aerospace, Software and Human Factors Engineer, currently working at NASA’s Johnson Space Center for Jacobs as Orion Spacecraft Simulations Lab Manager and xEMU Spacesuit Engineer. Prior to this she has worked on NASA’s Kepler Mission and in NASA’s Intelligence Systems Division at NASA’s Ames Research Center. She worked in the software industry for 14 years before coming to work for NASA. Anima has a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering, Master’s in Space Studies - Human Factors, Master’s in Computer Applications and a BS in Physics. While Anima aspires to be a NASA Astronaut and is preparing herself for the same, she is also a Scientist-Astronaut Candidate for commercial spaceflight research projects during her off-work hours. After selection and training, Anima has been participating in upper-atmospheric and bioastronautics research as a Scientist-Astronaut Candidate for Project PoSSUM. She has trained in the topics of Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere Environment, Fundamentals of Remote Sensing, Remote Sensing and Aerospace Cinematography, Spaceflight Simulation and Operations, Hypoxia Awareness and Mitigation, Spacesuit Operations, High-G Analog and Mitigation Methods, Introduction to Aerospace Physiology and Life Support Systems, and Celestial Navigation and Atmospheric Scattering. She has flown several parabolas aboard a Falcon 20 aircraft while participating in the testing of a commercial spacesuit in zero-G. She has also flown a high-altitude mission in a Mooney aircraft to study noctilucent clouds. She has been in a 6-inch head-down tilt position for a NASA Simulated Microgravity Fluid Loading study. She has spun in a centrifuge and experienced up to 6-G's as she contributed to a Federal Aviation Administration study. Anima has been a Commander for NASA’s HERA VII in 2015, an analog mission to an asteroid. In April 2018 she has been a Commander for a Martian Analog Mission at the Mars Desert Research Station. She has also been a First Tier Support Engineer for the Hi-SEAS Analog and Simulation missions since 2014. She has been participating and contributing towards the research required for long-duration space missions. She is a certified scuba diver, and a student pilot (105 hours logged). She has also completed the following trainings: Land and Sea Survival, Spacecraft Emergency Egress, Hypoxia Awareness and Mitigation, Spacesuit Operations, High-G Analog and Mitigation Method in addition to several others. Anima loves working with the younger generation the most, to provide them the guidance she missed out on growing up. She is an Assistant Scout Master and a STEM-NOVA mentor for the BoyScouts of America. She is a NASA Girls Mentor and a NASA Speakers Bureau member. She’s also been a First Lego Robotics team coach. She has delivered several talks in the US and in India including a TEDx talk while she pursues her motto to Inspire, Guide and Motivate the younger generation. Her work has been recognized and appreciated by people everywhere. She has received the Silicon Valley Business Journal’s Women of Influence 2017 award and is a “Forty Woman Over Forty To Watch Out For” honoree. I touched his face, his hair. His body. Cold. Hard. His face had no lines. It’s been said, the worry lines leave you instantly upon death. Will I lose my creased brow, I thought.Redemption by Lyn Mitchell Reflections in old age can grab your mind and transport you in fractions of time. Moments in our unique journeys are like flag posts in a desert of inconsequential living. A word, a smell, a piece of music. Redemption was always waiting to be written, to be purged. Dad’s death mask was always in my mind’s eye. It never left me. I tried to paint out the memory but it was in a tute at Uni, a trigger was set up and I could expel what had been festering inside. Understanding, without forgiving, never forgetting, but finally being able to accept being born was to be regaled, and thankful that the sins of the father are not visited upon the sons or daughters. We can learn from before, and we can set a different path. Lyn never felt educated. She left school in 1961 at year 10 level and fleeing from an abusive home life enlisted in the WRAAF. But the need to write never left her. At 72 she has almost completed her BA in Professional Writing and Editing. The obsession to write about her Dad’s story, a Barnardo’s boy, has led her on a journey of education. Along the way she studied an Advanced Diploma of Information Technology (aged 47), Diploma of Professional Writing & Editing (aged 68), and she has been published in Morning Bell, Dame Quentin Bryce’s, 'Dear Quentin Letters of a Governor-General', and The Age. Redemption is read by Petra Glieson. Acknowledgements: Memoria is written, produced, edited and presented by Nat V. Lyn Mitchell's short story, Redemption, is written by Lyn and read by Petra Glieson. The story is sound designed by Natalie Vella. Music in this episode is by Blue Dot Sessions, "Celestial Navigation" and "Plaque". Illustrations by Peta Manning. Her book, See Me Doodle, is out now. Support the show.

Set to brand new music by Ian Cooke Band, this sci-fi ballet follows a daring heroine as she travels the galaxy in an odyssey-esque adventure to rescue her kidnapped love.“I'm thrilled Wonderbound is opening its 2017-2018 season in collaboration with Ian Cooke Band,” said Wonderbound Artistic Director Garrett Ammon. “Ian's new album, THE FLIGHT I FLEW, is adventurous, heartfelt and quixotic and has provided the soundtrack to a new production that continues our tradition of creating accessible and surprising new dance for the Denver community.I was raised on Star Wars, Star Trek and Planet of the Apes, so creating a sci-fi ballet is a fantastic adventure that has captured my imagination. I hope it does the same for audiences.”
Considered by many within and outside of the Earhart community as the foremost authority on celestial navigation in the world, Gary LaPook has been interested in Amelia Earhart since the 90's; studying the flight at length from multiple facets using multiple skill sets. Recorded live on location in Gary's living room in Moorpark, California we spoke at length about the world flight, Amelia Earhart's impact and legacy, burden of proof and the inner workings of celestial navigation. We got into the mind of navigator Fred Noonan and the monumental responsibility that he carried during one of the most incredible flights in aviation history. Get out your paper and pencils; celestial navigation 101 is now in session!
Ian Cooke is one of our favorite recurring guests in the CPR Performance Studio. Last month the Denver experimental folk artist made his fifth appearance at CPR's OpenAir to share music from his forthcoming LP "The Flight I Flew." Music from the record will serve as the soundtrack for Celestial Navigation, the new show from Denver dance group Wonderbound opening Oct. 13. Ian Cooke and his band -- featuring Tom Hagerman of DeVotchKa -- played three songs from "The Flight I Flew." Cooke also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about creating an "intimate" vibe on the new LP, writing a narrative that takes place in outer space and what it's like to see his music interpreted through dance.

In this episode, I explore the case of Sheila Von Weise-Mack, a Chicago mother who was murdered while on vacation in Bali with her 19-year-old daughter. After wheeling a suspicious-looking suitcase out into the lobby upon checkout from their resort, Sheila's daughter, Heather Mack, and Heather's boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, flee the scene. Investigators are horrified to find Sheila's body inside the suitcase. Justice in Bali is a lot different than justice in other parts of the world. In Part 1, you'll hear details of the crime, as the court in Bali hears them. Please consider supporting Court Junkie with as little as $3 a month via Patreon.com/CourtJunkie. When Thomas Paine took aim at God, his reputation was destroyed. Even a nation that values religious liberty as much as the United States could not abide even a hint of atheism. In the early morning hours of June 14, 2007, a 32-year-old man is found walking down the side of a frontage road off I-55 in Channahon, Illinois. He's bleeding and seemingly in shock. A passerby calls 911 and investigators arrive at the scene. They find the man's wife and three children, dead in the family's SUV. In this episode, I cover the trial of Christopher Vaughn, a husband and father accused of killing his wife and three children. Americans may never agree on what constitutes a true patriot. But there's one man to whom that title can never be denied - a man whose last thoughts and dying words were tied to the hopes of his country - Nathan Hale. Join Mike and Micki, along with intern Tiny Rick(y) each week for the Weekend Round-up, learn about what happened Today in Geek History, play along with your newest favorite game, "IS IT REAL OR IS IT FAKE?", get the 411 on all your BFFs during the Slumber Party, and finally ending the night with shout-outs. Did you miss Vanfest last weekend? No worries, it's our recap extravaganza and we play several songs and talk about our experiences during the festivities! We're joined in studio by special guests KGRG1 Program Director Andrea and Adanica from The Buzz (and KGRG1 Assistant Program Director), who hung around with Mike all day. Is Metallica's brand new song considered "Today's Rock"? Who cares we play it anyhow! Also, find out who was initiated in the name of the prophet, Papa Roach. Mike closes out the hour talking about Kirby Krackle's live set where they played their album E for Everyone in its entirety live. It's uncanny how many of the things that happened TODAY IN GEEK HISTORY tie back into our conversations about Vanfest! Our guests Andrea and Adanica get to play a special CORE-themed game of "Is it Real or is it Fake? (woo)" Would you bet on Mike scoring any points? We get your "motor runnin'" and talk about two of our favorite Vanfest acts, Future Shock and Celestial Navigation, as well as going over the various stages. This week on the SLUMBER PARTY, we ask "If you were given $1 million, what would you do with it?"...and none of us seem to understand how money works. Cork gets in on the CORE-themed conversation with a song request. We wind down our Vanfest conversation by talking about Big O and Andrea's favorite new band, Blotterz before closing out the night with Shout-Outs! We can hardly handle how adorable Ash Wednesday & MC Lars were during their set and we preach the gospel of KGRG1. Listen LIVE every Monday night from 9-Midnight (PST) on 89.9 KGRG-FM! Check out our ON DEMAND page on KGRG's website for all of your MMAD needs! kgrg.com/Mike-and-Micki-After-Dark/22491384
Former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney (@JayCarney) joins Josh and Hrishi to discuss Josh Lyman's secret plan to fight inflation, and other ways press briefings can go horribly, horribly wrong.
#150. is my good friend, sailmaker Chuck O’Malley. I’ve worked with Chuck and his business at Chesapeake Sailmakers since first moving to Annapolis after college in 2006, and he’s been my sailmaker ever since. Back then, I was living on my dad’s boat Sojourner, and Chuck repaired a spinnaker we had onboard. He’d eventually build all three new sails for Arcturus before our Atlantic crossing, build my dad a new mainsail before his first Caribbean 1500 on Sojourner, and is currently finishing up the two new genoas that will complement the new Hydranet mainsail on Isbjorn. In this episode, recorded at the WCC Ocean Sailing Seminar weekend in March, Chuck discusses the technical aspects of building and maintaining ocean-going cruising sails. It’s the second or third time he’s spoken at our events, and his talk is yearly surveyed as a favorite among seminar attendees. Chuck talks about design and construction characteristics; downwind sail choices; three-reef versus storm trysail setups; storm jibs; gennakers and Code 0 sails; and much more. Before we get to this week’s show, a quick little update on Isbjorn. We’ve changed our schedule for the remainder of the summer, and will return to Annapolis from Newfoundland in August, instead of crossing the Atlantic as planned. Mia and I are realizing that delivering the passages to the high-level that we strive towards is a lot more stressful than we’d anticipated. Having to cross the Atlantic twice to get to the Caribbean in time for our 2017 program was just biting off more than we can chew. We’re learning the hard way that with ocean sailing, stuff doesn’t always go to plan, so we’re changing the plan. You can read the full backstory about the changes, why they happened, how the new plans affect our crew, and what’s in the future on our most recent newsletter at 59-north.com/news. With the changes, we’ve got some new opportunities to sail with us. July 25-August 4th we’ll be sailing south from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Chester, Nova Scotia, just outside Halifax. It’ll be a combination of cruising and exploring ashore on the fjords of Newfoundland, with some offshore, overnight sailing down to Nova Scotia. It’s new grounds for us, so will be a real adventure. Then, August 4-11, we’ll depart the Halifax area bound 600 miles nonstop for Annapolis. We’ll also be sailing south again with the Caribbean 1500 in November, and have added 2 Caribbean passages to the calendar in early 2017. Go to 59-north.com/offshore for the updated calendar and to register. Also due in part to our schedule changes, we’ve added a few events to the schedule. We get lots of emails from friends and fans in the places we’ll be sailing - if you’re in the Lunenburg or St. John’s area this summer, give us a shout and we’d love to show you around Isbjorn between trips! If you can make it to Annapolis in the fall, we’re hosting another Open House aboard the boat on the Friday of Boat Show, October 7. Finally, on the weekend of October 21-23, I’m hosting another Celestial Navigation workshop in Annapolis. It’ll be $500 and limited to the first 12 people to register. Go to 59-north.com/seminars to sign up!

Since it's Joe's last big episode as a podcast regular, we let him run the show, which starts with a check-in on Saturday Night Live, focusing on Kerry Washington's guest-hosting gig. We zigzag over to the many charms of The Carrie Diaries, then on to Sarah and Joe sharing some cheers and jeers (mostly the latter) for baseball broadcasting "legend," Tim McCarver. We stop off for a Downton Abbey-related Tiny Triumph, and then Joe takes his last chance (…until he comes back as a guest) at the Canon to make a case for the "Celestial Navigation" episode of The West Wing. After naming the week's Winner and Loser, we wind things up with an extremely special Game Time. Bye, Joe! Until this week's Minis, that is! TOPICS Lead Topic:

AstronomyCast 211: Celestial Navigation
Producer Tom Niemisto weaves between an interview with tall-ship captain Samantha Heyman and an astronomer/poet around a bonfire under a broad star-filled sky. The stars are governed by a perfect order and yet, they create a chaos of mystery. We link astronomy to creation myths in constellations. We search for deeper meaning the night sky or, with rigorous mathematics, we search for our physical location through navigation. This is Tom's first non-narrated audio work and, as with many radio stories, he sat on the great verite tape from the bonfire for two years before deciding to weave it with the tall-ship captains' voice. And... check this out... He scored the the music himself and performed it with his cello, seeking to "evoke the undulating horizon off a ship's deck, and the glint of stars trying to tell you something." We'd say he nailed it. The original version of this piece was commissioned by Julie Sabatier for Destination DIY on Oregon Public Broadcasting. It will be broadcast on December 4th on OPB on a show entitled "DIY: Rituals." Photo by Fmmr via Creative Commons.
