The randomiser takes us back to 1964 and only Doctor Who's seventh story, but in an episode recorded in person, will we be able to dredge up some Christmas spirit for The Sensorites? Presented by J.R. Southall, with Dylan Rees
Well, this has been rather rewarding: a lesser known story has proved to have all sorts of interesting elements. And there's been some Patreon feedback too, so before embarking on the final desperate venture the listeners provide some interesting insights. This final episode has it all - new characters, some interesting plot developments, and a bit of philsophy Who-style. But thanks to guest Steve Lyons (Doctor Who audio and book writer extraordonaire) there's even room for, ahem, a sting in the tale...
Matt's Missive continues to ruminate on the Doctor Who episode 'Rogue' starring Ncuti Gatwa, with a slight diversion into the sash-based racism of the William Hartnell story, 'The Sensorites.' Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Oh, a rare thing - where the episode title is the cliffhanger (yes, the Second Elder is kidnapped too but that really happened last week). There's a vitally iomportant moment in this humble story, as noticed by special guest Steve Lyons. Toby however, disappears down too many actor related rabbit holes to notice because he is an idiot. Still, there's plenty to say about the story even at this late stage, which just goes to show that even the less celebrated adventures are well worth visiting every now and then. #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. Well, the crew are in hot water (because Ian has been drinking poisoned water) and so they need to call upon a montage to help them to save the day. There's confusion afoot in Sensorites-ville, with one of them planning murder in the First Degree - or is that Second Degree? Hmm, not sure, we will have to look at what kind of sash the murder is wearing. Anyway, Steve and Toby give the episode the Third Degree (also known as the City Administrator's degree) but will they agree about this episode's strongest point? In a rare turn of events, Toby is currently in the lead. Can he hang onto it...? PS: There was a slightly loose cable to there is the odd crackle and dropout at the beginning but it settles thereafter - apologies. So... we move (very slowly, it is The Sensorites after all) from the space ship to the Sense Sphere but all is not what it seems on the peaceful planet. Some resent the travellers, and there's a danger so hidden that nobody - bar perhaps everyone watching the episode - will ever guess what it is. This under-celebrated Hartnell tale has charms all of its own, but also gives your host Toby Hadoke the opportunity to discuss an important moment in his life, when he discovered that you shouldn't believe everything you read. Especially if it is about Doctor Who... They may be Unwilling Warriors but they're still a terrifyung prospect - silent if not deadly, the Sensorites have to walk very slowly round the spaceship lest they run out of corridor. This story has a bad reputation and yet there's much to recommend about this : so will Steve Lyons (Doctor Who writer of note and wit) choose the same thing to celebrate as your host? And can you guess what gets chosen (maybe you can read their minds?). And this commentary comes on the heels of some sad news about one of the episode's stars... who still twinkles - and will forever. It's time for us to discuss what was unexpectedly the season finale of Season 17. The last contributions to the show of Graham Williams, Douglas Adams, Dudley Simpson, and Anthony Read. It also has the reputation of being one of the worst Doctor Who stories of all time. It's The Horns of Nimon. But will the Watchers find it to be as absolutely terrible as fandom would have it? Join us as we discuss the weakness of the kids (are they actually WEAKLING SCUM!?), the OTT portrayal of Soldeed, whether or not the Nimon were effective, where all the women are, and whether the Production Team were simply taking the piss with this story. Also, don't miss out on Anthony's outstanding Soldeed impression! Oh no. It's the story that everyone doing a Doctor Who marathon experiences their first stumble during. Indeed, it's the point where a number of people bail. Poor old The Sensorites. Even its advocate for this podcast, top Doctor Who writer Steve Lyons, confesses that it his least favourite story of the season. So join Steve as he guides your host very slowly around Captain Maitland's ship in search of something - anything - positive to say about this unsung early entry into the canon. He wouldn't have gotten away with it, too! If it wasn't for those meddling kids and their crotchety old Time Lord! Yes, this week we watched The Sensorites! Honestly, a pretty good six-parter that wasn't exactly fast-paced and full of action, but also didn't really have pacing problems either. What it did have was one really crazy Sensorite who did not want humans (or their Time Lord) anywhere near their planet and he did some pretty Scooby villain stuff to stop them. Well, try and stop them at least. Anyway! Grab some Scooby Snacks and let's dive in!

Much has been said about the 1964 Doctor Who serial The Sensorites. Not all of it positive. We at Doctor Who Literature are here to reverse that trend. The Sensorites is awesome. Except when it isn't, but when it lands, it really lands. This week's guest is Black Archives writer Jon Arnold. Here is one of Jon's many recent appearances on Strangers in Space. It's time for Benton's awfully big adventure in 'The Sensorites', previously starring William Hartnell, but now upgraded for Jon Pertwee! So that'll be 'The Thenthoriteth', then. In the process, we get all grown up and find out about sunk cost fallacies, the value of pointed sticks and what's so great about molybdenum. Although we also do an acapella season 8 soundtrack. We don't always live up to our own ideals. Doctor Who's main character is no exception: The Doctor's mantra is "never be cruel or cowardly" — created by writer Terrance Dicks as an off-screen guideline during the classic series until it became official in the new series, with Peter Capaldi's Doctor going so far as to remind Jodie Whittaker's of the catchphrase in his dying moments. But there have been numerous times in the Doctor's adventures that he's acted in ways that contravene this philosophy — sometimes coldly unattentive to his companions' feelings or even committing what could (and possibly should) be considered serious crimes. While all that is arguably good for the show — complicated heroes are better for drama, after all — it's worth calling out the character on his (or her) occasional hypocrisy, if only to point out the exceptions that prove the rule. And boy are there a lot of exceptions. Here are 10 times the Doctor was cruel or cowardly (or both!): 10. Calling Danny Pink "PE" 08:06 9. Shouting at the Sensorites 12:37 8. Not saying goodbye 16:01 7. Crushing Yaz 20:40 6. Ditching Clara in Kill the Moon 23:11 5. Letting others "take the hit" 28:25 4. Torturing a helpless Dalek 31:13 3. Imprisoning the Family of Blood 34:09 2. Murdering a Time Lord 38:38 Honorable mentions 41:14 1. Not killing the Master 46:28 Rate and review Pull To Open on Apple Podcasts! This week, Pete Lambert and Hannah Cooper join us for a particularly embarrassing Coal Hill School parents' evening, which goes horribly wrong when a Mechanoid is found roaming the premises. It's The Caretaker. Notes and links Pete has a dim memory of something similar happening during his childhood, but mere months before Series 8 aired, the Troops to Teachers programme was introduced, giving veterans the change to fast-track their teacher training so that they could work in schools. The Guardian reports on the scheme here. Vasquez Rocks is a park not far from Hollywood, and was famously used in the original Star Trek episode Arena (the one with the lizard man in a skimpy cocktail dress). A particular famous rock formation, nicknamed Kirk's rock is recreated in the opening shot of this episode. Nathan alludes to the fact that Barbara is absent from Episodes 4 and 5 of The Sensorites because Jacqueline Hill was on holiday, and that she returns from her time on the Sensorite spaceship with a spectacular tan in Episode 6. In the Press Gang episode UnXpected, Mmoloki Chrystie's character Frazer Davis encounters the fictional Colonel X, who was the main character in a cheesy spy-fi show he watched as a child. Michael Jayston is magnificent as Colonel X. (You might be able to find it on YouTube if you look hard enough. It's worth the effort.) A world of Monoids, Menoptra, Sensorites and Visians, where only the Meddling Monk can save us! As we move from Easy Yellow to Moderate Red Alert, open heart surgery begins to look simple. This can't be Time Ram... This must be Time Disease.
Let's Celebrate the complicated legacy of Susan Foreman, the Doctor's Granddaughter and First Companion!I'll discuss Susan's (perhaps unfair) reputation as "The Screamer," what makes Susan special as a companion, her unique relationship to the Doctor, Mentor/Mentee relationships generally between the Doctor and Companion, the problematic aspects of Susan's development and departure, the deliberate parallels between her departure and Rose Tyler's, and her overall legacy within the history of the show. One day, she shall come back. Yes, she shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties."Look, if they don't understand, they can't, they can't hurt us at all. I understand these people better than you. Their minds reject things they don't understand." (to the Doctor)"I love your school. I loved England in the twentieth century. The last five months have been the happiest of my life." (to Ian and Barbara)-An Unearthly Child "Oh, look, Grandfather. I understand the Sensorites. They're timid little people. Because their minds and mine can communicate sometimes, they trust me." "Grandfather and I don't come from Earth. It's been ages since we've seen our planet. It's quite like Earth. But at night, the sky is a burnt orange, and leaves on the trees are bright silver."The Sensorites"I never felt there was any time or place that I belonged to. I've never had any real identity.""One day you will. There will come a time when you're forced to stop travelling, and you'll arrive somewhere."-The Dalek Invasion of EarthNEXT TIME: Serial #11 The Rescue (Episodes: "The Powerful Enemy" & "Desperate Measures")Special thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. Commentary and analysis on one of the most overlooked serials of the era.... "The Sensorites."The TARDIS arrives on a ship whose crew is trapped aboard by a telepathic race known as the Sensorites. Soon, however, Susan discovers that the Sensorites are not aggressors but terrified of the humans who might want to exploit their resources. Taken to the Sense-Sphere, the Doctor and company must save the Sensorites from a deadly disease in exchange for the release of the TARDIS and returning the human crew to perfect sanity. But a traitor lurks among the Elders of the Sense-Sphere, and he wants power at all costs--and has no qualms about using the strange visitors to gain it. BARBARA: Sorry, I was thinking. You know, I've never seen the Doctor so angry.IAN: Oh, yes. Susan set him off, didn't she. The Sensorites must have hypnotized her in some way.BARBARA: No, I don't think so. She's just growing up, Ian.______SUSAN: Trust can't be taken for granted. It must be earned. I trust you, but only because I know you.1ST ELDER: But Susan, our whole life is based on trust.SUSAN: Yes, and that might be your downfall. Look you don't trust the ground you walk on until you know it's firm, do you. So why trust your people blindly?1ST ELDER: When I listen to you, you who are so young among your own kind, I realize that we Sensorites have a lot to learn from the people of Earth.SUSAN: Grandfather and I don't come from Earth. Oh, it's ages since we've seen our planet. It's quite like Earth, but at night the sky is a burned orange, and the leaves on the trees are bright silver...________I discuss this episode's parallels to "The Zygon Invasion"/ "The Zyon Inversion," the way in which people perceived powerless are silenced, the ways in which this serial questions power structures, how people exploit others to gain power, the inherent messiness of conflict-resolution, and how trust operates in the serial. NOTE: The Sensorite's planet is called the Sense-Sphere. Not the Senser-Sphere:-)NEXT TIME: Serial #8 The Reign of Terror (Episodes: "The Land of Fear," "The Guests of Madame Guillotine," "A Change of Identity," "The Tyrant of France**," "The Bargain of Necessity**," "Prisoners of Conciergerie")**These two episodes are missing but have been animated.Special thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. This week; it's the beginning of a new journey for Chris, Matt and Cook as they explore the classics, beginning with William Hartnell's First Doctor in 1964's The Sensorites. What's with the subtle racism, and will Cook manage to stay awake for all 6 episodes?
We’re back at the start again, looking at one of the earliest alien races, the Sensorites.
This week we drink a little (a lot) and not only learn a little history about a Texas symbol - but the show seems to turn a corner when the TARDIS lands on our first spaceship.....and Jenn might actually almost sort of like the Doctor?!
