Having helped mastermind Labour's renewal in the 1980s and 1990s, one of British politics best-known figures has just embarked on his latest role. And, it's a long way from Hartlepool, in the post-industrial North-East of England, where he first became an MP. Born in 1953, Peter Mandelson started on the road to party politics as a researcher at the Trades Union Congress. After a stint as a TV producer, he left to take up the role of Labour's director of communications, but his real ambition was a place in Parliament.Even his sternest critics accept he is a slick political operator and a good networker, but he's a controversial figure – with a big challenge ahead. On today's podcast I chatted with the comedy actor Jon Culshaw who is known to us all for his many roles and TV appearances. From an early age Jon discovered he had the ability to make people laugh with his impersonations of big characters in his life such as his grandmother's housekeeper, Mrs Jump. From hospital radio to Spitting Image, from Deadringers to the Royal Variety Show, Jon has made us laugh for decades. There is also the serious side with the narration of David Bowie in The Final Take for the BBC World Service and playing the role of Boris Johnson in the Channel 4 docudrama, Partygate. Most of all Jon is a super nice man who is a great listener and has a lovely positive outlook on life. Enjoy the show.! review A News Huddlines reunion celebrating the life and comedy of Roy Hudd OBE. The Roy Huddlines was staged on Sunday 14th May 2023 at the Sondheim Theatre in London's West End. The cast, writers and producers of BBC Radio's longest-running audience comedy programme, The News Huddlines, gathered to celebrate the life, love and laughter of Roy Hudd OBE. Roy had a profound effect on all who worked with him - he was a unique combination of comedy genius, wise mentor and cheeky uncle. The cast reunited here for one joyous hurrah in his honour are Huddlines originals Chris Emmett, Alison Steadman, Nichola McAuliffe and announcer Richard Clegg, plus Kate Harbour and the brilliant Jon Culshaw who took Roy's centre microphone with the blessing of Roy's widow, Debbie Hudd. Also assembled for this gala event were the writers who cut their comedy teeth working on The News Huddlines and went on to create some of the finest British comedy from the 1980s to the present day. Not the Nine O'Clock News, Spitting Image, Drop the Dead Donkey and One Foot in the Grave were all created by Huddlines alumni, and the legacy continues. Written by Starring

Jon Culshaw's big break came when convincing the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in a prank phone call that HE was the then Conservative leader William Hague - an infamous moment in his life for which he was called an imposter. Since then, he's built up a repertoire of 350 celebrity voices, starred in 23 series of Dead Ringers and joins us live from the Edinburgh Festival where he's starring in his new show, Imposter Syndrome. Tommy Jessop is an actor, a campaigner and has just had his first book published, 'A Life Worth Living'. In 2007, he became the first actor with Down Syndrome to star in a primetime BBC Drama in the film ‘Coming Down the Mountain' and has gone onto tour theatres as Hamlet and played Terry Boyle in 'Line of Duty'. This year's Great British Sewing Bee champion Asmaa Al-allak spent her formative years growing up in Iraq. Her grandmother was a seamstress who passed her skills on to Asmaa's mother, who in turn taught her and after winning the series, Asmaa said it's fair to say ‘it's in the blood'. After leaving Iraq at the age of 14, having lived through the Iran-Iraq war, Asmaa and her family moved to Durham where her father was working as a scientist. She went on to study medicine and is now a consultant breast surgeon at a cancer centre in Cardiff. Also - the first in our '...In Nature' series where we hear from artists and creatives about how they are inspired by the natural world. Today is the turn of printmaker and wood engraver Molly Lemon.
