Comics, movies, television, games, and other assorted nerdery, dissected by two old people and a god-damned Millennial
That Podcast Productions mainline a bunch of Spider-man comics that are technically Marvel and definitely not your standard spider-men.
Friday the 13th woohoo! Finally another property that people actually know! I know it's a horror movie that exists both as a kind of rip-off of an older thing and the cornerstone for a bunch of new tropes and twists, but knowing that a movie you have to watch is actually going to be good is such a breath of fresh air. Sorry lil' Jason.
It's not often that a British sci-fi tv show project has an impressive effects budget that shines through carried by unique stories and captivating performances. Like I said, it doesn't happen often and it didn't really happen here either. Kinda fun though.
This one was just bad. The movie was so terrible. It's worth it to listen to the episode because we did some really good sketches in this one, but other than that I don't even want to bother leading you in under the pretense of, ugh, "Bikini Beach Race".
The gang gets real French and anthology-hungry in this episode as they cover sci-fi classics from the legacy magazine Heavy Metal, originally known as Metal Hurlant and collected in many different formats over many years and we only had a small bit of timeline to work with and even worse technology to record it on. Break out the silver bikinis, or WWII outfits I guess.
The gang really put on some fancy airs this week as we welcomed special guest Greg Smith to talk about one of his favorite movies; Critters! It's definitely NOT a Gremlins rip off. Greg Smith is one of the co-creators of comic series Junior Braves of the Apocalypse, and we even get a sneak peak and some of his upcoming projects. But this episode isn't about just Greg Smith, it's about how Critters is definitely not a Gremlins rip off! Guess you'll just have to listen to decide for yourselves!
Come watch the lads dismantle the oppressive quiz show system and have engaging discussions over who is hotter; young Ralph Fiennes or characters that don’t have everything handed to them on a silver platter. We watched the film Quiz Show directed by Robert Redford following the autobiographical comics we read last week for That Podcast We’ll Never Do.
Here's one you're really going to feel like taking a shower afterwards, it's Hardbodies on That Podcast Stays Up! All Night. Recording while the boys were staying Up! All Night they ponder and reflect on how badly this movie will offend sensible women with agency, since it doesn't seem to affect any of the women surrounding these couple'a preverts for main characters.
Let's get quizzical! This week the gang somehow managed to find two very different comics about the same niche subject; autobiographical comics about quiz shows. To be fair, it's more about the lives surrounding people involved in quiz shows. Or is it? Or is one of them? Guess you'll have to listen if you want to know about All the Answers by Michael Kupperman and Form of A Question by Andrew ROstan and Kate Kasenow. In the meantime I'll take Genius Podcast Editors for $1000, please.
Wish I had a believable alibi to skip some of these movies, but this one wasn't too bad if you didn't focus on it or pay any attention to the twist ending. It's Murder 101 this week as the boys stay Up All Night! Episode 37 now also debuts the brand new theme music for That Podcast Stays Up! All Night.
It was a dark and stormy night, and I wish I would have been killed by lightning only to be spared having to watch Frank Miller's version of the Spirit. Our tying thread of fate this week was content being created by people outside of their craft. Last time it was comic books, this time it was so much worse. At least the comics were harmless at best, I definitely wouldn't say that for this movie.
Holy Criterion! The boys actually get to watch a GOOD movie this week! Praise be to the Movie Makers! After weeks and weeks of fun but terrible movies we get to watch a bona-fide cult classic, Eating Raoul. This movie has it all; swingers, Thai sticks, debt, wine theft, point blank face shooting, mass electrocution, and Nazi throw pillows! You don't want to miss this episode, and you definitely don't want to miss checking out Eating Raoul.
A very interesting concept this week that, like everything else we do, turned out to be pretty bad. We took a look this week at creators going outside their normal comfort zone and trying to make something new. Specifically; comics. All sorts of pseduo celebrities have writing credits on comics, and this week we looked at Freshmen co-created by Seth Green and Cryptozoic Man from the crew of the cancelled AMC TV Show Comic Book Men. There's nothing wrong with admitting your mistakes guys, it's always the first step.
No, this isn't an episode about textile worshippers, it's about Satan! Well, less about Satan and more about his schlubby right hand minions and followers. Like most Up All Night movies it has an amazing title and box art with a movie that barely seems to fit along with it! Listen to the several-week-delayed exciting conclusion to the sketch bit about our bumbling hosts in a wormhole! Also since this was the lost episode, the timeline of upcoming shows might be different than the one at the end of this episode. Double check our facebook page or the Ketchup Special episode for the real order of next shows.
Oh my god, we're back again! Brothers, sisters, everybody sing! Recording equipment was lost, and then also casual day-to-day life as we knew it ended! Like, for real. But the lost equipment was recovered (from someone's dirty car trunk) and like Darwin's turtles we have evolved to continue bringing you engaging and riveting work as always. This week we catch our listeners up with what we've been up to as well as adjusting and updating the release schedule of the next few That Podcast Productions shows!
You better not add a "the" to the title of this movie, cause there ain't one! This week Josh, Ora, and Cody follow up the seedy noir comics of That Podcast We'll Never Do with a movie that also doesn't have color. Well, I guess Criminal was in color, but Stray Bullets did not. Either way, if you're stuck inside like most of the world is now (CV-19) then enjoy this extra long but not longer than we normally go over episode! Is that man in the window a robot, or a man? He's a witness!
There's a whole lot to unpack here. Like, a ton. Surprisingly this episode isn't two hours long! This week we threw ourselves on the proverbial pike for all of you by watching a really terrible movie so you won't have to. It's Caveman starring one of the worst Beatles and a former Bond girl. If you take away anything from this episode I promise it's DO NOT WATCH CAVEMAN. NOT A JOKE. DO. NOT. WATCH. CAVEMAN.
If it feels like it's been a long time since the boys covered a subject that they all universally enjoyed, that's because it HAS been forever! This week Ora, Josh, and Cody dive into the subject of neo-noir, noir, and crime thriller and what in the hell those words even mean in reference to comics. Stray Bullets is by David Lapham and Criminal is by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, both fantastic examples of the journey that modern comics can take you on. We actually did research on this one! That's part of why it's so long! Both series have much more content than what we read/re-read for the show so we did some deep diving on the creators as well as the genre. This was a fun one, hope you enjoy too!
Make sure you have your mind-altering substance of choice to abuse if you ever plan on watching the movie we reviewed this week; it's Cemetery High! This is the original cut of the film that was SUPPOSED to be called Assault of the Killer Bimbos, but was so bad they renamed this one and created a completely different movie to not completely waste an amazing title. No cemeteries in this movie, barely a high school, and little to no care in the editing or sound department for this one. Our sketches on this podcast have more time and effort put into them than this piece of crap. Fortunately the worse the movie, the better the episode!
Cody got sick this week, Ora listened to NPR in his car instead of sharing with friends, and Josh assuredly did devious things on the internet. This week we follow up the last episode where we decided that we'd watch Ready to Rumble and the very end of the episode. Cody loves this movie! Ora and Josh point out repeatedly to Cody just how much poop and butt stuff really is in this movie, and spoilers; it's a pretty good amount.
This week on That Podcast; Josh, Cody, and Ora learn that you can judge a book by it's cover. Or rather, you don't need a good movie, just a great title and poster. And that's all that this movie brought to the table this week! But don't you worry listeners, the worse the movie is the longer we'll find stuff to pick it apart and goof on. We've got it all! Sexy fruit strip teases, surfer chads, Eddie Deezen car flip!
Cody, Ora, and Josh bring the masks and lyrca suits out once again, but this time with an actual purpose; Wrestling Comics! We talk about wrestling, comics, wrestling comics, and what makes infographic comics work. Listen to this extended episode since we had so much extra source material to talk about and plenty of side stories to divulge!
This week on That Podcast Stays Up! All Night Ora, Josh, and Cody learn the wise old addage; trust no hoe. Or something like that. It's another sexy psychological thriller with Snapdragon! The career starting film for Pamela Anderson. Wait, it wasn't--- you think it's the... oh well I guess that makes sense too. Come on you perverts, in this movie she's only a girl who was sold into Chinese slavery and now maybe is killing men in her sleep. Maaaaybe? You'll have to find out!
Ora, Josh, and Cody watch a movie with the scariest subject of all: sex! Joking aside, if you do have questions about coming into adulthood you should definitely not ask any of these three guys. You should listen if you want our hilarious banter and joking about the movie, but if you need real answers to questions for your sexual education you could probably do better than us.
For our first-ever classic episode posting, we bring you this Graphic Novelty era outing where Josh, Ora, and Archie's expert Shane delve into the frightening depths of the Brian Wood/Becky Cloonan collaboration Demo and the Gerard Way/Gabriel Ba comic Umbrella Academy. What do we find there? Cultural Marxism, apparently. Sorry, Adam Baldwin. IN MEMORIAM OF ARCHIE'S EXPERT SHANE. We miss you, buddy.
Staying up late for Up All Night this week is easy since we have that bright red comet-y glow everywhere! Pop quiz; are you dust, a zombie, or saved by a paper thin alibi? Ora, Josh, and Cody bask directly in the effervescent glow of what the valley girls of the 80s hath wrought in Night of the Comet. A movie not without it's fun 80s cliches but still more rooted in an 80s reality than littered with empty cans of Tab everywhere. It's just not as good as Mr. Pibb people, and we all know it.
Getting back on track for the new year Josh, Ora, and Cody read some comics about STIs and deadly consequences. Black Hole by Charles Burns and The Beauty by Jeremy Haun and Jason Hurley. Listen to them agree and disagree, imagine as they attempt to describe pictures on an audio format; it's That Podcast We'll Never Do!
A lot of the movies we watch for this show are movies from a long time ago set in a perception of the future. As a reflection of the year 2019 Ora and Cody watched all of the movies set in 2019! Well, not the movies that came out in 2019, and really just the sci-fi movies set forward in the year 2019. Malkovich 2019 malkovich malkovich 2019 2019.
Happy New Years from all of us at That Podcast Network to you! We celebrated it by watching Tom Green's feature length film, Freddy Got Fingered. You should probably just listen to the episode now instead of scanning the description for clues.
Josh, Ora, and Cody brave the depths of depravity with holiday sequels this week on That Podcast Stays Up! All Night. Trust us, if you didn't have Clint Howard on the brain before you listened to this episode, you definitely will afterwards. Is it a Christmas horror flick about Santa? No! Does it barely scrape by the qualifications of "Christmas" movie? Yes! Find out now!
Ora, Josh, and Cody hitch a ride to 1983 with DC Cab. You'd think this is a Mr T movie, and you might think it's supposed to be a comedy. But it's only Mr T adjacent and a comedy in the loosest sense of the word. And speaking of words, who the hell let Gary Busey say the N-word?!
It is "the season," as they say, and we're celebrating by talking about a couple of the big ones - Christmas jingle subject Batman and Jesus surrogate Superman. Josh, Ora, and Cody tackle some iconic works on the Big Two by Jeph Loeb, former internet punching bag and current Marvel TV guy.
We are back on track with our second Up All Night cheerleader movie, 1988's Cheerleader Camp, the slasher... what's the opposite of classic? Shitshow. The slasher shitshow Cheerleader Camp. Josh, Ora, and Cody talk about all the mascot heads and homoerotic subtext you could want as we try to find something interesting in this snorefest.
Sorry we're late again; we were planning a heist. A Bitcoin Heist! In this Podcast-first playalong commentary track, Josh, Ora, and Cody talk about the 2017 Vietnamese crime/action thriller Bitcoin Heist, a movie that has about as much to do with cryptocurrency as it has to do with League of Legends.
If you always thought Mad Max could do with a few less Thunderdomes and a few more horny frog chicks, we've got a treat for you. Josh, Ora, and Cody dissect Hell Comes To Frogtown, the grosso Roddy Rowdy Piper sci-fi schlockfest.
Cryptocurrency is a complicated part of the modern financial sphere. But we don't care about that, so we're just going to make a bunch of dick jokes about Shonen Crypto and Bitcoin: The Hunt for Satoshi Nakamoto in our first Kyleless episode of TPWND.
Here at That Podcast Productions, we love Halloween, We also love Oreo cookies. So, this Halloween, we are combining our two great loves by talking horror and eating the spooky Oreo mystery flavor. Also, my apartment is haunted.
This week, we're joined by special guest girl Erin to make it less creepy that we're talking about the teen prostitute thriller Angel. And I do mean less, because it is still creepy.
It's Kyle's last episode as a full host! He leaves us as he arrived - talking about kid's shows and sex farms. In between those topics, Josh, Ora, Kyle, and Cody talk about the old Shazam serials, the 70s live action TV show, Teen Titans Go (again), Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice, and a weird youtube video. Oh yeah, and also a bit about the 2019 movie.
What's in the special sauce? Royhpnol, it turns out. The boys serve up a heaping helping of bad 80s romantic comedy tropes in their review of the Jim Varney/Traci Lords biopic Fast Food.
Did you know that almost all the Shazam memes out there are by nasty people trying to talk shit about the Marvel Captain Marvel and Brie Larson? That amuses me, because that kind of petty, sophmoric fanboyism is exactly what Jeff Smith's Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil has no time for. Then again, Geoff Johns' subpar Shazam New 52 run would probably pout right along with the internet trolls. Josh, Ora, Cody, and lingering guest Kyle talk over these two disparete runs of the Fawcett Captiain Marvel, with just a touch of gazing into the abyss.
it's the first five-Monday month for That Podcast Productions, and since Ora has added another decade to his age this month, we are celebrating by talking about 40(ish) movies! Josh, Ora, and Cody talk about their most influential movies, with guest lists by everyone who has ever appeared on one of our podcasts in any incarnation.
Yes, we know there is a children's show called Monster High, No, we aren't doing that one. We're doing the 1989 movie, withn slightly more boobs and a penis gargoyle. You're wlecome.
Wrestling and giant monsters - two great tastes that taste great together. Josh, Kyle, and Ora talk about the oddball wrestling promotion Kaiju Big Battel's Terebi Sento DVD, where giant minature bananas fight off space bugs and metallic potatoes.
For our pilot episode of That Podcast Stays Up! All Night, we're talking about a big hunk of rancid 70s cheese named Cheerleaders Beach Party. It's like a porno with the porno bits removed. Which kind of makes it the perfect introduction to the USA Up! All Night canon. Theme: "Vaping in LA" by Lee Rosevere, used under creative commons license.
For our triumphant return, Josh, Ora, and alumni Kyle are joined by Erin (a girl) to talk about giant monsters. It's Kaijumax and Godzilla in Hell in a battle for Tokyo! Also, someone advances radical theories about the Transformers.
