Did you know that almost all the Shazam memes out there are by nasty people trying to talk shit about the Marvel Captain Marvel and Brie Larson? That amuses me, because that kind of petty, sophmoric fanboyism is exactly what Jeff Smith's Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil has no time for. Then again, Geoff Johns' subpar Shazam New 52 run would probably pout right along with the internet trolls. Josh, Ora, Cody, and lingering guest Kyle talk over these two disparete runs of the Fawcett Captiain Marvel, with just a touch of gazing into the abyss.

In this episode, Curt and Kevin wrap up their series on comics' Captains Marvel (and prepare for the April 5 release of Shazam!) with a look at the Big Red Cheese himself, the original Captain Marvel, aka Shazam, in 1940's Whiz Comics #2 and 2007's Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil, written and drawn by Jeff Smith and published by DC Comics! In Bill Parker and C.C. Beck's charming origin story, homeless young orphan Billy Batson boards a crazy train to the subterranean lair of an ancient wizard who grants him magical superpowers seconds before dying a gruesome death! That fateful moment set the stage for one of the most popular comics of its day, a kid's wish-fulfillment epic filled with talking tigers, evil worms, mad scientists, and a whole family of super-powered siblings! Almost 70 years later, Jeff Smith, award-winning creator of Bone, tries his hand at Earth's Mightiest Mortal, adding elements of Arabic folklore and post-9/11 sociopolitical commentary in a four-part story featuring giant robots, talking alligators, and lots and lots of roaches! Can 1940s Billy Batson and his strapping alter ego stop the evil Dr. Sivana from ridding the world of terrestrial radio? Can their 21st-century counterparts stop him and Mr. Mind from destroying all of humanity? And can they make it into that Rock of Eternity known as … The Comics Canon? The former Air Force pilot has come a long way since her first outing as a superhero, which sees her flying into action against the backdrop of the women's liberation movement to … save bigoted magazine publisher J. Jonah Jameson??! Thirty-five years later, writer Kelly Sue DeConnick charts a new course for Carol Danvers: Now an Avenger and one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, she  finally takes the mantel of the late Captain Marvel, just in time to embark on a high-flying adventure featuring time travel, alien technology and some of the toughest woman pilots to ever take to the skies! We had the pleasure of hosting Jeff Smith on the party floor this week. He's the author of indy comic turned kid's lit publishing juggernaut Bone, Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil, RASL, and Tuki: Save The Humans (currently in progress). He's also a co-founder and organizer of the Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (aka CXC) festival.  We get right into his work on TUKI, including the tough decision to pull the book from both online & print serialization when he realized it wasn't quite working the way he wanted it to. Jeff's back hard at work on a revised and refocused version of TUKI, and we talk about the stylistic choices, inspirations, and goals involved along the way. His role as a driving force behind CXC is touched on, and we get the secret origin of the fest itself! Indeed, there's a lot in the way of history lesson this episode, as Jeff talks about the origin of the species, the genesis of BONE, his experiences with Will Eisner, the Billy Ireland Library, and the comics scene of the 1990s. Plus: RASL! Writing! The Importance of improvisation! Editing! Just when is a book "done!" And more!

Happy Valentine's Day, dear listeners, and welcome back to this romantic episode of Just One of the Guys. Okay, maybe it's not so romantic, but today we are covering two issues that I really love. First off, there's Green Lantern #101, where the blast from the past Hal Jordan decides to take a trip to his home town of Coast City to meet up with some friends and family...ummmm, awkward! One would think seeing his home wiped from the face of the Earth would really mess our emerald hero up, but what actually happens is incredibly poignant and surprising. Plus the artwork by Jeff Johnson is gorgeous and completely sells the drama in the book. And as a special treat, the second book is an issue of Power of Shazam (number 41 to be precise) that features our two Lanterns coming to the aid of the Marvel family as they take on the horrible, yet incredibly cute Mr Mind in the final part of "The Monster Society of Evil" story, penned by none other than Jerry "The Extraordinary" Ordway. And the crappy version of the Teen Titans are there as well, for some reason. But don't worry about being confused by jumping into the book in the last chapter, because J. David Weter (Dave's Daredevil Podcast, Starman Observatory, and PADSmash, An Incredible Hulk Podcast) has come aboard to recap and synopsize the story. So if for some reason you haven't got something special for the love of your life, give the gift of Just One of the Guys, the one thing that truly shows how much you love them*. *Just One of the Guys does not officially endorse the idea of giving podcasts as Valentine's Day gifts. Tell Me Something I Don't Know

This is episode 7 of Boing Boing's, Tell Me Something I Don't Know. It's an interview podcast featuring artists, writers, filmmakers, and other creative people discussing their work, ideas, and the reality/business side of how they do what they do. Jeff Smith began writing, drawing, and publishing Bone in 1991, through his company, Cartoon Books. He championed self-publishing in the 1990s with other independent cartoonists known as the Spirits of Independents and continues to self-publish through Cartoon Book. Since 1991, Bone has become a world-wide phenomenon, published in nearly 30 languages. In 2005, Scholastic reissued Bone in color through their Graphix imprint, inspiring an entire generation of young cartoonists who found his work through traditional book stores, comic book shops, schools, and libraries. He followed the Tolkien-esque, Bone, with Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil (DC Comics) and RASL (Cartoon Books) - a sci-fi noir about a dimension-hopping art thief. Smith recently announced his next project, Tüki Save the Humans, about the first human to leave Africa during the Ice Age. Tell Me Something I Don't Know is produced and hosted by three talented cartoonists and illustrators: Jim Rugg, a Pittsburgh-based comic book artist, graphic designer, zinemaker, and writer best known for Afrodisiac, The Plain Janes, and Street Angel. His latest project is SUPERMAG. Jasen Lex is a designer and illustrator from Pittsburgh. He is currently working on a graphic novel called Washington Unbound. All of his art and comics can be found at jasenlex.com. Ed Piskor is the cartoonist who drew the comic, Wizzywig, and draws the Brain Rot/ Hip Hop Family Tree comic strip at this very site, soon to be collected by Fantagraphics Books and available for pre-order now.
