After that, we discuss the 1972 proto-slasher West Coast weirdo movie, "Private Parts" from 1972. It's not the Howard Stern, it was Paul Bartel's (Eating Raoul, Death Race 2000) first movie! Paul Bartel directs this black comedy that's "not Lubitsch—but it's not quite John Waters either", according to Criterion essayist David Ehrenstein. Eating Raoul (1982), is a story of America, of the normally hidden and unpunished violence of wealth accumulation. Or it's a story of America, of two prudish weirdos punishing the people they don't like. Or it's a story of America. the dream of revenge against the managerial class. Or it's none of these things completely, as we get into a discussion this week about just how strong the metaphor in Eating Raoul is. But hey, it's still a pretty fun movie.
While everyone is stuffing their face during the holiday, we will be discussing cannibal comedies from the 1980s. Bon Appetite! A black comedy about a sexually-repressed couple who fund their dream of opening a restaurant by posing as sex workers and robbing and murdering Los Angeles swingers. When a local thief worms his way into the scheme, everything goes haywire, jeopardizing their chance at the American Dream. Starring Paul Bartel, Mary Waronov, Robert Beltran, Susan Saiger, Buck Henry, Ed Begley Jr., John Paragon, and Edie McClurg. Written by Paul Bartel and Richard Blackburn. Directed by Paul Bartel.
I am joined by the bane of my podcasting existence John Hudson and the much nicer Bobby Hazzard to heap praise upon EATING RAOUL (1982). This is the film I've always though of as ground zero for Paul Bartel appreciation and more than forty years later I think it still holds up as the perfect introduction to his comedic sensibilities. If you laugh your way through this film, chances are good that you will love his other movies as well. Even the ones that don't involves running over little old ladies to win a cross-country race or cannibalism. We jump into the discussion by detailing our history with Bartel's work and what each of us find so appealing about his screen persona. All three of us bring some tales of the production history to the table with the start and stop nature of the filming process leading to information about locations and casting. We do eventually get to a synopsis of the plot and spoil most of the funnier moments so be aware that you should probably watch the movie before listening to us giggle our way though the many deaths by frying pan. Our peanut gallery has returned for this episode taking the time to laugh with and at us during the show. Long time podcast fans will recognize Beth and Steph from previous episodes but we also get some very funny contributions from Laura as well. Luckily, she keeps John in line and I will take any help I can get corralling the monkey-mad Mr. Hudson. Strap in for this one, folks and stay out of the hot tub! The show can be reached at thebloodypit@gmail.com where we'll be thrilled to hear from you. You can also find the show on our Facebook page and wherever odder podcasts are downloaded. Thank you for listening.

On today's episode, we're heading back in time in our decked out phone booth to "borrow" some historical figures from the past, so we don't fail our final history project, while we revisit the beautiful buddy comedy classic, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989). This movie was co-written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon and directed by Stephen Herek. This movie stars Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, My Own Private Idaho), Alex Winter (The Lost Boys, Freaked), George Carlin (The Prince of Tides, Outrageous Fortune), and Robert V. Barron (Night Court, Eating Raoul). We also have a bunch of other appearances from folks like Al Leong (Lethal Weapon, Die Hard), Jane Wieldlin (Clue, Mission Hill), Dan Shor (Tron, Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College), and Tony Steedman (Scrooged, The Golden Girls). This movie is absolutely a gem, and if you haven't seen it already, you should change that!!! This is a silly buddy comedy on the surface, but I also think has some good messages tucked in there, as well. Alan also regales us with stories of his early work with New World Pictures, the guerilla filmmaking that went into Eating Raoul's production, and his transition to becoming an editor of film trailers and featurettes. In 2001, a production was staged Off-Broadway at the Kraine Theater on East 4th Street in New York. Lee and Leah are back to cover the Paul Bartel written and directed "Eating Raoul" (1982). Many asides come up this week when the hosts are not gushing over the amazing chemistry of Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov. Some things brought up include the depictions of rape in the film; comparing this film's style to John Waters' style, and how Waters' would have done this differently even though the subject matter is very similar to his films; the twisted moral values of the Blands; the lack of a strong counterparts to our protagonists in a political sense; the depictions of sex work in the film; how sexy Mary Woronov was; some of the funny gags; proper use of a dildo in one's asshole, and much more. Also: what the hosts have watched recently and they play a round of the IMDB Ratings game. "Eating Raoul" IMDB Check out Leah's inspirational father, Robert Hardy The Walker-Runner. Lee and Leah are joined by friend and fellow podcaster Gary Hill, and their other friend Kerry to talk about the movie that is the source from which all other movies spring: Jim Wynorski's classic b-movie "Chopping Mall" (1986). How much chopping actually happens? What's a better title for it? Does anything in this film make any bloody sense, and does that actually matter? Other talk revolves around Dick Miller; A fun cameo by the Blands from "Eating Raoul"; women turning down oral sex; and if you would care about your friends and loved ones as little as the characters in this movie do, if you were in a slasher movie in real life. Also: a ton of listener comments and what the hosts have watched as of late. If you decide to listen, thank you, and have a nice day. "Chopping Mall" IMDB Listen to Gary's podcasts here. Devin & James are serving up a treat in the DEN OF CIN. It's an unlikely and weird double feature of CANNIBAL FILMS! First we get into Paul Bartel's 1982 cult comedy EATING RAOUL, starring Bartel, his longtime collaborator Mary Woronov, and Robert Beltran in the title dish... er, we mean role. Then we dive into a very recent film for a change, the 2022 Hulu "meat cute", FRESH. Directed by Mimi Cave, starring the excellent Daisy Edgar-Jones, as well as Sebastian Stan in a role sure to make your skin crawl (and braise, broil, or roast). Amanda and Sarah are calling up phone terror, doubles, and more. Amanda covers the case of L'Enfant, an especially egregious case of harassing phone calls that terrorized a Washington, DC restaurant for over a decade. Sarah dips into her fearscination again with a look at the Irish fetch, the Finnish Etiäinen, and other doppelganger-like figures from folklore. Other topics covered include a Reddit horror story, a Skyrim misunderstanding, and a new sexy term of endearment. Recommendations: Amanda recommends the 1982 cult comedy Eating Raoul. Sarah recommends the 2013 experimental horror film Enemy. It's Christmas! And nothing says Christmas quite like kidnap, Satanic Ritual, setting fire to the homeless and infanticide. Yes, to celebrate we're watching Spanish Occult Caper “The Day of the Beast” (aka “El Día de la Bestia”). A film in which we learn the correct way to spell “AC/DC”; that you don't need to actually carve a pentagram (particularly if you have expensive flooring); and that you never, ever, wanna fuck with the landlady. Along the way we discuss “Come To Daddy”, “The Guyver”, “Eating Raoul”, Ghost Stories for Christmas, “Carnival of Souls” and “Zoltan - Hound of Dracula”. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers, and join us. APOLOGIES FOR ANY SOUND/SPEECH QUALITY ISSUES - THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED REMOTELY, THE DAY AFTER THE WTH OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY.

It was a long time coming! After meeting Denny Tedesco at NAMM two years ago, having seen his unforgettable, moving, stellar film, The Wrecking Crew, I jumped. Scheduled BC (Before COVID), at long last, here we finally were. Denny had completed most of the interviews (Carole King, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Linda Ronstadt to name but a few icons weighing in on The Section (Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkle, Waddy Wachtel, and Danny Kortchmar), for his upcoming doc on thier The Immediate Family (with relative youngin' Steve Postel), as a sort of followup to his doc, The Wrecking Crew, when we met. He was heading to Sundance just before the pandemic hit. Undeterred by the inerminable shut down, Denny's managing to complete the film, getting a masterfully produced iPhone self tape from Keith Richards, remote interviews with Stevie Nicks and Lyle Lovett, and sitting down, with caution and testing with the boys, themselves. How I can't wait to see it! This collective has played on most of the soundtrack of my life. And I kinda love them all as musicans and peoples. Denny discussed at length his father, famed session guitarist Tommy Tedesco, where he came from, and how he came to be perhaps the most recorded guitarist, ever. We did a deep dive into The Wrecking Crew, and why, when Tommy was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Denny quickly started filming his father, and the rest of the Crew. Sweet side bar for me, Tommy was the guitarist with Happy Kyne And The Mirthmakers on Fernwood 2Night, at the top of my must see TV back in the day. Here, a taste of Tommy Tedesco as Tommy Marranuchi https://bit.ly/3GtPt9N ❤️ We talked about Denny starting out not as a musicain, but as a set director on the film Eating Raoul, producing at Comedy Channel and the 2000 Academy Awards with Billy Crystal and his current producing gig, the 2nd season of Hanging With Doctor Z, featuring Dana Gould, as Dr. Z, who interviews Jeff Garlin, Dave Foley, Bobcat Goldthwait, Patton Oswalt, Steven Webber, Will Forte, Penn Jillett, Maria Emily Bamford, Al Yankovic, Paget Brewster, Hank Azaria, to name some. Denny gave a sneak peek into his next doc, something completely different… ponzi scam, anyone? Warm, fun, and easy, with fabulous tales from the front and back, Denny was a total joy after a particulary rough day. This is gonna be my happy revisit for a long to come. Just thinking about it makes me smile. Broadly. In this week's highly problematic, drunken episode of Re-Enacted, Robbie & Crystal discuss the 1982 black comedy "Eating Raoul". You'll likely notice the continuing theme from last year's Re-Enacted Halloween special; this one is sexier. Can Crystal control her thirst? Are Robbie & Crystal destined to become like the Blands? We will be back with a regular episode next time to discuss another episode of Unsolved Mysteries. TW: eating on mic, sexual assault and discussions of cannibalism. An uptight couple lures swingers to their apartment to kill them and steal their money in this sleazy Trashy comedy. It's funny, silly, and definitely for adults.

In this episode, movies that spurred our love of low budget cinema. Previously we looked at William Shatner's The Intruder, the Blaxploitation classic Dolemite and the Paul Bartel / Mary Woronov comedy Eating Raoul. In Episode 14 we discuss everyone's favorite breast fetishist Russ Meyer and the movie Up!, a bizarre murder mystery comedy that has a Greek chorus, a la Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite. "Soft-core shenanigans" and Raven De La Croix cross our radar as well. Also, the Roger Corman production Rock 'n' Roll Highschool. It features PJ Soles, who was in Halloween and the quite awful Alienator (We love Corman, especially his animals run amok flicks like The Nest and Piranha). Finally, we turn to one of our absolute favorites, the Brian De Palma helmed The Phantom of the Paradise, starring the very much alive Paul Williams (oops) which in our mind is far far superior to Rocky Horror.
On this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast: how we got into low budget cinema. On the show, we discuss the following films: -Eating Raoul. This film is about a couple who finances their dream restaurant by luring swingers over to their apartment and whacking them over the head with a frying pan to steal their money. An absolutely can't miss premise that also features a (near) toilet bowl drowning. Also, Satan's Sadists, a bikers run amok movie that actually DOES feature a toilet bowl drowning. -The Intruder, AKA, I Hate Your Guts, This one casts Captain Kirk William Shatner as a cross-burning bigot, one of the few Roger Corman movies that lost money. -Dolemite, A cheap martial arts flick, and a supposed "comedy," featuring the self-proclaimed "Godfather of Rap," Rudy Ray Moore (RIP) who once proclaimed, "When it comes to rappin' I was through with it before they knew what to do with it." [for a more in-depth discussion of Dolemite, check out our Dolemite podcast!]
For Thanksgiving, enjoy the story of Reagan-era morality and economics gone wild: Eating Raoul put "cult filmmaker" Paul Bartel on the map with a surprise mainstream hit about Paul and Mary Bland, two Puritanical folks who kill swingers for cash to fulfill their "American Dream."Learn more about your ad choices. Then, STARLEE KINE swings by to chat about movies she claims are her favorites that she hasn't seen recently enough to remember, whether a big vocabulary can give you new ideas, and what a Cryptogram is. Plus, Kubrick Talk! An upsetting Acu-Massage Encounter! Jimmy Jazz does something really stupid! The Plot of Eating Raoul! And a new Ricky Gervais speculation for 2013 that will cause you to hide your loved ones. A Big Deal 2013 Thing!
