The MacRumors Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2025 40:13

On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the long-awaited roll out of Apple CarPlay Ultra and Samsung's all-new S25 Edge, which is positioned to rival the iPhone 17 Air later this year. Apple this week announced CarPlay Ultra, its next-generation ‌CarPlay‌ experience. ‌CarPlay‌ Ultra fully extends across all of the vehicle's display, including the instrument cluster. It provides access to real-time vehicle data, supports iPhonewidgets, theme options, instrument cluster display customizations, and introduces integrations for vehicle functions. ‌CarPlay‌ Ultra is available first in new Aston Martin models in North America. Existing Aston Martin vehicles will also support ‌CarPlay‌ Ultra through forthcoming software updates. Looking ahead, Apple says it has secured commitments from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to bring ‌CarPlay‌ Ultra to their vehicles in the coming year. Other automakers are expected to follow. In other news, Samsung this week announced the Galaxy S25 Edge — a device clearly designed to undercut the ‌iPhone 17 Air‌'s expected appeal, with both smartphones aiming to be the thinnest in their respective ecosystems. The Galaxy S25 Edge sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, a titanium frame, and a remarkably slim 5.8mm profile, weighing in at just 163 grams. It features a dual-lens camera system, including a 200MP wide-angle sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, supported by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Samsung is also pushing its AI credentials with features like Drawing Assist and Audio Eraser. In contrast, the ‌iPhone 17 Air‌ is rumored to be even thinner at just 5.5mm, making it Apple's slimmest ‌iPhone‌ ever. It is expected to feature a 6.6-inch OLED display with ProMotion. Apple is said to be removing the ultra-wide camera entirely and opting for a single 48MP wide camera, removing the SIM card tray, and the secondary stereo speaker to save internal space. Other expected specifications include a 24MP front-facing camera, 12GB of RAM, and the A19 chip. While the ‌iPhone 17 Air‌ may win the title of thinnest flagship, it could come with a major compromise: battery life. According to internal testing leaks, only 60–70% of users are expected to get through a full day on a single charge — a notable drop from the 80–90% seen with other recent ‌iPhone‌ models. Apple is reportedly using a higher-density battery and its custom C1 modem to squeeze as much efficiency as possible into the super-thin design.  To address this, Apple is reportedly developing a new USB-C battery case, designed to extend the ‌iPhone 17 Air‌'s runtime. The accessory could launch alongside the device to help mitigate negative perceptions around longevity

Vamos a descubrirlo.

Deciding to choose and stay at Cambrex post-acquisition, and having the freedom to use Snapdragon as a catalyst for growth Matt began his career in chemistry more than 30 years ago developing continuous processes for the manufacture and purification of acrylates at the former Rohm & Haas company. Matthew then moved to Columbia University and earned a PhD in Chemistry. Upon graduating, Matthew returned to industry as a process development chemist at Merck Research Laboratories.  In 2006, Matthew moved to Amgen where he worked on the development of both batch and continuous manufacturing solutions for synthetic drug substances. He also worked on the development of new manufacturing technologies for synthetic – biologic hybrid molecules. In 2015, Matthew was a founding member Snapdragon Chemistry, Inc., a contract development firm specialized in continuous manufacturing technology. He is author or inventor on more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and patents, and numerous regulatory filings. Matthew is driven by a passion for the development of new chemical technologies. We talk with Diane Blazek, the executive director of All-America Selections (AAS), exploring the newly announced 2025 winners of top-performing garden plant varieties. Each year,  AAS winners undergo rigorous trials, evaluated by expert judges, to ensure they will thrive in diverse U.S. and Canadian climates. Diane highlights standout varieties like the high-yielding tomato variety, “Tonatico”, the sweet and crunchy “Pick-N-Pop” pepper, and the visually striking “Murasaki Fioretto” cauliflower. We also cover herbs and flowers, including the resistant “Piedmont” basil and the vibrant Zinnia, “Zydeco Fire”. This episode is rich with advice for both novice and experienced gardeners seeking the latest quality varieties for their gardens.Previous episodes, show notes, links, product information, and transcripts at the home site for Garden Basics with Farmer Fred, GardenBasics.net. We heard you missed us. We're back. Windows Microsoft declares 2025 the "year of the Windows 11 PC refresh." As likely as "year of the Linux desktop" The theory: Windows 10 EOL, AI PCs, lingering security fears from CrowdStrike The issue: Windows 10 has 63 usage share right now. At this point in time, Windows 7 had only 25 percent usage share (and was in second place, not first) Intel joins in on this fever dream but we've stopped listening More interesting: AMD is kicking ass and taking names. And we thought the existing chips were good (they are). Related to this, PC makers are embracing AMD like never before. Check out HP's workstations (including laptops) Microsoft is blocking the 24H2 update on PCs with Auto HDR enabled New Canary and Beta builds ring in the New Year Not that it matters, but Windows 11 almost had Vista Ultimate Extras-like dynamic wallpapers Dell kills XPS and all its other PC brands because Dell is stupid and doesn't know what it had Arm & PCs Qualcomm defeated Arm Holdings in licensing dispute court case. And, yes, it won big time, contrary to Arm's nonsense Qualcomm announces an even lower-end Snapdragon X chip for $600 PCs, so ASUS announces an $1100 laptop that uses it Snapdragon Dev Kit update Part 2 of Paul's history of Windows on Arm is up New Arm PCs announced, including desktops. Ahead of CES, Geekom jumped the gun and said it was coming out with a Snapdragon X-based NUC. Lenovo has a NUC/SFF NVIDIA and MediaTek confirm partnership on Arm chips for PCs Microsoft 365 First, GitHub Copilot, but now Microsoft 365 Copilot will allegedly stop using OpenAI exclusively Microsoft reveals (confirms) it will spend $80 billion on AI infrastructure in FY 2025 as it suckles up to Trump like the rest of the tech industry Microsoft and OpenAI allegedly tied AGI milestone to profits, not intelligence Xbox & Gaming Microsoft discusses a console-like experience for Windows handheld gaming. Tied to that, a new generation of handheld gaming PCs is on the way Xbox Game Pass says Happy New Year with a full slate of Activision Blizzard titles. Just kidding NVIDIA announces new graphics cards for PCs No one wants this, but Xbox is coming to LG smart TVs Xbox Rewards shuffles the deck chairs, hopes no one notices it's worse now Tips & Picks Tip of the week: Spend a little, upgrade to Windows 11 App pick of the week: Microsoft PowerToys RunAs Radio this week: Least Privilege in 2025 with Bailey Bercik Brown liquor pick of the week: Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey Hosts: Leo Laporte, Paul Thurrott, and Richard Campbell Download or subscribe to Windows Weekly at https://twit.tv/shows/windows-weekly Get episodes ad-free with Club TWiT at https://twit.tv/clubtwit Check out Paul's blog at thurrott.com The Windows Weekly theme music is courtesy of Carl Franklin.
