John is joined by Michael Nosanchuk, an associate in Quinn Emanuel's New York office.  They discuss Michael's unique journey from studying screenwriting, to driving a taxi in New York City, to his time in sustainable farming to ultimately becoming a successful lawyer working in the premier art disputes practice in the world. They also discuss how these experiences prepared him for his career in law, including how driving a cab taught him cultural fluency, farming taught him patience and perseverance, and screenwriting taught him the importance of carefully crafting an emotionally moving story and telling the story in limited time. Jonathan Herbert (b. 1952, New York City) explores the nonverbal relationship between cosmology and consciousness. He creates unique, intuitive formulations of water-based paint using acrylic and urethane media made on the spot, mid-process. He explores the nonverbal nature of creative inspiration via intuition. These works examine the richness of the present moment while simultaneously referring to a concurrent interest in the expression of the past, of his traumatic experiences and resulting emotions. Much of his work has been informed by his extremely abusive childhood and the unsurprisingly drug- and alcohol-ridden years of his life prior to 1986. His experiences as a night shift cab driver in bankrupt New York inspired the years-long body of work, Views from a Yellow Cab. He drove a quarter-million miles over the course of five years. An important and interesting and uncommon view of humankind, as evidenced in the movie Taxi Driver. Herbert received his diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1977. He continued his studies, via an Independent Study Award from the Museum School, for more than a year in Antwerp, Belgium. He began exhibiting in 1978 in Soho and the East Village and has garnered several solo exhibitions. Many of his group shows have been in New York City, including tagging subways and walls in the East Village of the 1970s. In New York in the mid-eighties, shortly after MacPaint had first been released, Herbert was one of the founders of the Digital Art Movement. During his digital years, Silicon Graphics decorated their entire Seybold booth with his work, flew him to San Francisco and asked him to demonstrate his process during the convention. His digital work has been featured internationally. Herbert for years labored lovingly over the creation of digital medical drawings for pharmaceutical books and journals, continuously expanding his education, which fed his fascination with medicine. His work as a digital artist even led to being interviewed on network TV. Herbert's bibliography begins in December 1982, in the regular Cookie Mueller column “Art and About” in Warhol's Details Magazine. There is also a Jonathan Herbert entry in the Cookie Mueller Encyclopedia. He has appeared in and been reviewed in many publications. Portraits of Herbert are in both Nightline by Peter Donahoe and Taxi: The Social History of the New York City Cab Driver. Herbert's work is in the collection of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the Brooklyn Art Library, Pfizer Incorporated, the law firm Kirkland and Ellis, and The Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, Indiana. Herbert currently lives and works in Sarasota, Florida, where, every day, he struggles to live fully in the face of multiple invisible disabilities including lymphoma, PTSD, and cognitive impairment, most of which result from 9/11 survivorship. Uber has decided to team up with its competition.   A new deal signed by the ride-hailing company with Yellow Cab SF and Flywheel Technologies means when customers order a ride from Uber, they could see a yellow cab come to pick them up. Baptiste who shares his journey from working in the yellow cab business in New York to building Sterling Park Properties – his successful real estate development and investment company in Atlanta, Georgia.  Emmanuel was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. At age 15 he moved to New York to live with his father. He became a driver for Yellow Cab then started his own private transportation company. He shares his story on how he transitioned into real estate, the challenges he over came, the people that helped him along and those he gets to help on this side of his journey now. The Day I Almost Died Changed the Way I Think About Business and LifeWhere are you right now, in your career and in your life?Are you where you thought you would be?Does your business enhance your life or detract from it?One cold winter morning ten years ago I was not focused on those three questions.  I was not focused on anything.  I was flat on my back, strapped to a wooden board on a gurney. I stared at the ceiling, counting the tiles that passed by as the paramedics and doctor pushed me faster and faster down a seemingly endless hallway.  Everything below my shoulders was numb.My mind was making up for the lack of motion in my body.  It was racing with blistering speed. I was not thinking about all the things I would not be able to do if the feeling did not return.  I was thinking about my priorities.  I was thinking specifically about all the family things, all the life things I had put off because I thought my work and my life could not coexist.   It is amazing how your life can change in a split second.Earlier that morning I made a choice to drop off a file at a client's office instead of meeting my wife for lunch.  I could have sent a messenger with the file.  I could have emailed the documents.  I could have done several different things, but the client demanded I bring the file personally so he could review the work and give me immediate feedback.I walked at a brisk pace as I stepped off the curb with the rest of the pedestrians crossing with the light, in the crosswalk.  I was not on my mobile phone. I was not distracted.  I was thinking about crossing the street.  When the Yellow Cab hit me time stood still.  I could see the horror on the faces of the other pedestrians as I flew 23 feet 7 inches and hit the ground with a sickening thud.  I remember hearing the commotion as a group of Good Samaritans chased down the cab driver and pulled him out of the cab.  I also remember the kind woman who asked me if she could call someone as they loaded me into the ambulance. Back in the hospital my focus changed when the ceiling tiles gave way to a long metal tube into which I was carefully loaded by six hospital staffers.  The only thing louder than the annoying hum of the equipment was the sound of my thoughts.  Thoughts of things I had yet to do.  Things I had put off.  Quality time I had not spent with people in my life that really mattered. Things worked out for me after that day…in more ways than one. By the grace of God, I suffered no lasting injuries from that accident.  But it served as a wake-up call.  I made the decision that from that day forward my work was going to be something that enabled my life. I was going to be passionate about every aspect of my work and I was going to delegate things I did not enjoy.  I was only going to accept clients who energized me and I was not going to let anyone dictate the terms under which I would operate.  I would take time to do things that were important both for my clients and my family. French producer, filmmaker and writer Benoit Cohen has been living in Brooklyn since 2014. In 2019, we invited him at the Lycée Français de New York to talk about his books. The first one Yellow Cab is about his personal experience: Cohen drove a cab around the five boroughs for a few months, in the perspective of writing a screenplay about a French actress becoming a taxi driver in New York and finally wrote Yellow Cab published in the US by Pointed Leaf Press. His second book Mohammad, Ma Mère, et Moi tells the story of his mother who welcome an Afghan refugee in her home in Paris. In 2021, a graphic novel bande dessinée with drawings by Christophe Chabouté (The Park Bench, Moby Dick) is published in January in France (later on in the US). and Mohammad, Ma Mère, et Moi is soon to be a movie.

Sam's there to help a cabbie win a contest - a coveted NYC taxi medallion is the prize - without getting mugged and shot like in the original history. We dig into an episode that is for all intents and purposes the Liz Torres Hour, and there's nothing wrong with that.
