Micah paints a gloomy picture of the society in his day: the rulers demanded gifts, the judges accepted bribes, and the powerful dictated what they desired. On top of that he observed a blatant disrespect for God, the family unity, and for the dignity of life and living. He warned the people of their terrible fate and yet, right in the middle of gloom and doom he spoke a word of encouragement: God will not abandon His people. Micah juxtaposes the leaders during his time with the Lord of Hosts during the time God establishes His kingdom on earth. The prophet Isaiah foretold of Christ, but he also prophesied that there would be people who would not be able to hear and receive the message.  The rejection of Christ by the Jews was part of that prophecy, as well as the grace extended to the gentiles who can hear His word.  God chooses who He will save, but those chosen should not be boastful or have a sense of entitlement.  We cannot know who God choses; our job is to keep trusting and looking to Him. In the book of Romans, Paul looks to the prophet Isaiah's declaration about the children of Israel and proclaims that a remnant shall be saved, but not all.  He addresses Jews that thought their salvation was automatic. Many of Abraham's seed believed they didn't need salvation because they had the covenants, the promises, and the law.  Although they were anticipating a Messiah, they rejected Christ and everything He had to say. Not all the Jews rejected Christ, but many of the spiritual leaders were against Him because they had no spiritual discernment and they perceived Him as a threat to their position.  There were also many people who only followed Jesus for self-serving reasons.  The rejection of Christ was foretold by God and there are still many people today who will not hear. Sin is a universal disease for mankind, and we are in an ongoing process of coming short of the glory of God. Though it may not be as clear in the King James English, the text of Psalm 22 in the Hebrew clearly depicts the suffering of Christ. Although the psalm was written by David, the details cannot possibly refer to his own suffering: it is a prophetic picture of Christ written a thousand years before it became history. There is no way anyone could fake these things; they would have to somehow control the reactions of the mocking enemies. Seeing how God brought this to pass, we can have confidence that He will likewise bring to pass what He has prophesied for a future time. In the Old Testament, in order to be made right with God, there was a temporary way into God's presence once a year on the day of atonement. This set time was reoccurring and something that God laid out as a shadow that pointed to the shed blood of Christ sufficient to cover us once and for all.
