Sanctification is not an emotional response or an outward imitation of what we think holiness is; it is an operation of the Holy Spirit transforming us from the inside, which then out rays His nature. When Christlikeness shines forth on the outside, it is because it is radiating out from the changes God has made on the inside. As we yield ourselves to Him in dedication, He renews our minds and equips us for service. We will always face trench warfare and go through pressure as we continue in our faith walk because we are still a work in progress. Moving into the New Testament, we learn that we cannot apply a singular definition to holiness and sanctification. In Jesus' high priestly prayer, we see that sanctification is not something we endeavor to do, but rather a passive act on our part; something that is initiated by God to conform us to the image and likeness of Christ as we are faithing in Him. When you are doing something for God, the way you do it is more important than getting the job done. You do it His way because the instruction of the Lord is holy. When David first tried to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, it was not according to God's instruction and resulted in the death of Uzza for touching the Ark. When David put God first and followed His instructions and preparations and offered sacrifices, fear was replaced by joy, and the Ark was brought into Jerusalem. In the midst of laying out God's instructions to His people, there is the story of an incident God used to make an example. The son of an Israelitish woman was condemned to death for cursing the name of God. God made it clear that He would not tolerate blasphemy; He demands respect. Failing to recognize that God is who He says He is, especially when we have His presence with us, is like a knife piercing His heart. God reveals His names in the Bible through His actions and by declaring His name. When He spoke to Moses, God names Himself the LORD that sanctifies. God deigns to bend down and speak to earthy people and to save them. As we go in faith, our relationship with God changes, and He reveals Himself in our needs; when God sets you apart, He begins a work in you, and He will finish it. In the two events of God providing water from the rock, Moses obeyed God's instructions the first time, but disobeyed the second time and wrested God's word with severe consequences. This obedience and disobedience illustrates a dimension of understanding holiness and sanctification. God doesn't want us to treat His words casually; His word is holy. Looking at holiness and sanctification, our running to the voice of the Sayer is a stepping stone in God's direction. If our ears are tuned to the holy, we will be running to His word. To shed more light on "holiness" and "sanctification", this message takes us into the book of Leviticus. Rather than reading it as a set of rules in legalism, the bird's eye view approach allows us to see what God is calling "holy": that which is of Him, pleasing to Him, and set apart for the purpose of worship to Him versus that which God is calling "common," profane, pagan, and not of Him. The subject of holiness and sanctification cannot be treated apart from God and His presence. The ground around the burning bush and Mount Sinai was hallowed because of His presence. In the Old Testament there are degrees of holiness, but in the New Testament and today, God's Spirit is in us making us holy. Sanctification is not the act or process of justification; it is the activity of the presence of God to change us into His image and likeness. Studying grammar, particularly antonyms like "common" and "profane", helps us better understand the original meanings of the Hebrew words related to holiness and sanctification. We have a language problem, where holiness is made synonymous with perfection; it cannot mean perfection or sinlessness except when speaking of God and His attributes. When God declares people holy, they are set apart and dedicated, not perfect. What the Bible means by the word "sanctification" is difficult to understand in English because different streams of words were used simultaneously to translate these concepts. It is faulty understanding and bad theology that equate holiness with morality or perfection; the meaning in the original languages was to be set apart by God for His purposes. Rightly understood, it is not something we can do to ourselves but rather something done to us by the Holy Spirit. To understand the importance of the Resurrection and why it is worth following the proofs, there must first be an acknowledgement of our fallen condition, in need of divine pardon, and a recognition of our immortality. If Christ is not risen, our preaching, first, is vain. Our faith and hope of forgiveness and resurrection are also in vain. No "logical explanations" can explain away the transformation of Paul or the eyewitnesses, the exact timing and details of fulfilled prophecy, or the growth of the church. 1 Corinthians 15:14 VF-2076 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. When doing a study on the Resurrection and trying to get information, there are a few things we must do as historians. First, use a method that has been tried and proven, that we know has the ability to unearth. Next, detach from bias. Finally, account for what we know as certain history. Many critics apply different criteria for looking at Scripture than they would for looking at any other field of study, leading to biased conclusions. An honest historian's approach to the evidence available indicates the scriptural records are valid history. Our faith is not vain: He is risen, and with the presence of Christ in our lives, we can order our lives accordingly. It is a mistake to assume the disciples were the only witness of the risen Christ. Such an assumption leaves a big gap in explaining the vast spread of Christianity in such a short period of time. How did the Apostle Paul go from being an enemy of Christians to defender of the faith? There would be no benefit for an enemy of the church to lie about his conversion to the faith, to preach openly and establish churches or to give them correction. After the Resurrection Jesus appeared to Paul and chose him to herald the gospel. Paul's deep knowledge of the word lays out the basis for our hope in the Resurrection, the promise of eternal life. 1 Corinthians 15 VF-2182 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. In a day when a majority of professing Christians have been lulled into an ignorance of the content of God's Word and fail to recognize the resurrection of Christ as a reality and fact of history, it is necessary to examine the evidence and reach a verdict: either the Resurrection is a reality and Christ is risen, or our faith is in vain. At the core of Christianity is the resurrected Christ. This message focuses on the resurrection of Christ as told in the Gospel of Mark and it's curiously short ending. The beginning of a series for the sake of two people who are dear friends but far from the knowledge of God. Bad experiences with the church at large or a "brand" of Christianity cause many to be turned off on the church. There is corruption in all of humanity, so we should not ignore God because of that. The evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ cannot be ignored and if you look at it honestly it is life-changing. The earliest teachings of the Resurrection were from eyewitnesses of a factual event, not emotive feelings. Some of the most convincing evidence comes from the Apostle Paul, who had no reason to tell this story if it was not true. Just like Abram, we often choose to leave the place that God has called us to because we focus on the seen circumstance of famine rather than trusting God and relying upon His word of promise. Instead of chastising us for getting off track, God uses our mistakes and missteps to lead us back to where we started: the place of sacrifice. After 21 years of ministry, Pastor Scott reflects on her calling and the lessons that have left an imprint on her soul. One of which is the blessing of being called by God and being struck by a famine: the famine of feeling completely inadequate to answer God's call, and the challenges that He gives for ever-increasing faith. The book of Isaiah has ample archaeological evidence to support its authenticity and history corroborates many of its prophecies. Isaiah was a different type of prophet. God told him to prophesy against Judah and other nations for their sins, but He also told him they would not listen. Isaiah's prophecies were fulfilled in his lifetime, after his death and some are still yet to come. Most importantly, the book contains many Messianic prophecies, all of which point to Christ. God sent Jonah to a foreign kingdom with this message, "Turn back to God now! Judgment is coming." Miraculously, they listened and did just that. The prophet Amos speaks of God's judgment against the northern kingdom of Israel. God spelled out their sins in great detail and warned them that their punishment was coming quickly. History shows us that God kept His word. While there is very little hope in the book of Amos, there is a promise that in a future time, the scattered people of Israel will be brought back and Christ will dwell in their midst. The lesson for us today is this: don't keep pushing the limit with God, because at some point, He can get enough. God told the prophet Hosea to marry a whore to symbolize the spiritual infidelity of Israel. In their prosperity, the people had failed to give God thanks and had worshiped idols. The prophecy of Joel describes a famine and devastation sent by God to wake the people up and bring them to repentance. It affected every aspect of life, from the livestock to the crops that made the offerings and worship practices possible. While Joel's prophecy speaks to the people in his day, it also speaks to us in the present who are living in a very evil time. It also speaks of the future when divine retribution will be meted out on "the day of the Lord." God revealed Himself in the Old Testament through prophecy and miracles. He put His power, His presence, and His will on display to show people He was God, so they might turn to Him. The miracles that Elisha performed often centered on water, oil, food, or life and death. They reflected what was lacking in the people, and they were designed to turn the people back to Him. The life and ministry of Elisha can shed light on our walk as believers if we make applications to ourselves. The prophet Elisha shows us that God doesn't ask us to be perfect, but He does expect us to respond willingly to His call. Elijah was a messenger of God and the story of his own life of faith is a message for us today. During the evil rule of King Ahab and Jezebel, Elijah had great victories like defeating the priests of Baal and despite that victory he ran away in fear wanting to die soon after. Elijah was not perfect, but his devotion to God did not waver and when he faltered, God restored him and continued to use him. Elijah learned that God is not only in the incredible and powerful events, but He is in the small things revealed to us along the way. Elijah's experiences teach that despite our failures; God will continue to work with us if we trust in Him. 1 Kings VF-2535 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. Evil can be blatant but is often very subtle. The bible provides many examples in the Old and New Testaments to help us to recognize evil when we encounter it. Not much has changed from the time of the early church. By 90 A.D. it had been infiltrated with apostasy and heresy. Biblical giving begins with the understanding that the earth is the Lord's, and the tithe belongs to Him. Micah paints a gloomy picture of the society in his day: the rulers demanded gifts, the judges accepted bribes, and the powerful dictated what they desired. On top of that he observed a blatant disrespect for God, the family unity, and for the dignity of life and living. He warned the people of their terrible fate and yet, right in the middle of gloom and doom he spoke a word of encouragement: God will not abandon His people. Although God did turn His back, He never completely abandoned the people in Micah's day. How much more us if we continue to trust Him and keep our eyes fixed on Him?!
