It is a mistake to assume the disciples were the only witness of the risen Christ. Such an assumption leaves a big gap in explaining the vast spread of Christianity in such a short period of time. A careful reading of the book of Acts shows us that there were many more witnesses whose preaching was consistently focused on one thing: the risen Christ and the power of His Resurrection. How did the Apostle Paul go from being an enemy of Christians to defender of the faith? There would be no benefit for an enemy of the church to lie about his conversion to the faith, to preach openly and establish churches or to give them correction. After the Resurrection Jesus appeared to Paul and chose him to herald the gospel. Paul's deep knowledge of the word lays out the basis for our hope in the Resurrection, the promise of eternal life. 1 Corinthians 15 VF-2182 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. In a day when a majority of professing Christians have been lulled into an ignorance of the content of God's Word and fail to recognize the resurrection of Christ as a reality and fact of history, it is necessary to examine the evidence and reach a verdict: either the Resurrection is a reality and Christ is risen, or our faith is in vain. Many have sought to disprove the resurrection of Jesus Christ and were overwhelmed after examining the evidence within the biblical records. At the core of Christianity is the resurrected Christ. This message focuses on the resurrection of Christ as told in the Gospel of Mark and it's curiously short ending. Women in that day were not considered adequate witnesses and yet Mary Magdalene and other women were the first eyewitnesses to the empty tomb. Their report does not suggest a conspiracy to lie but an honest telling of what they saw. The beginning of a series for the sake of two people who are dear friends but far from the knowledge of God. Bad experiences with the church at large or a "brand" of Christianity cause many to be turned off on the church. There is corruption in all of humanity, so we should not ignore God because of that. A look at the church history surrounding Easter and at the traditions of men becoming dogma show why we should not simply trust the institution, but we can still trust God. If the Resurrection of Christ really happened, it is the most important event in history. Those who are skeptical and think there are too many discrepancies in the accounts should take a closer look. There are common denominators to all of the accounts and many witnesses in the gospel records. The evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ cannot be ignored and if you look at it honestly it is life-changing. The earliest teachings of the Resurrection were from eyewitnesses of a factual event, not emotive feelings. Some of the most convincing evidence comes from the Apostle Paul, who had no reason to tell this story if it was not true. The disciples were changed by the Resurrection, and they were willing to die for preaching it. In seeking the truth that is revealed in Jesus Christ, God creates famine to give us opportunities of faith and opportunities of failure. Just like Abram, we often choose to leave the place that God has called us to because we focus on the seen circumstance of famine rather than trusting God and relying upon His word of promise. Instead of chastising us for getting off track, God uses our mistakes and missteps to lead us back to where we started: the place of sacrifice. After 21 years of ministry, Pastor Scott reflects on her calling and the lessons that have left an imprint on her soul. One of which is the blessing of being called by God and being struck by a famine: the famine of feeling completely inadequate to answer God's call, and the challenges that He gives for ever-increasing faith. The book of Isaiah has ample archaeological evidence to support its authenticity and history corroborates many of its prophecies. Isaiah was a different type of prophet. God told him to prophesy against Judah and other nations for their sins, but He also told him they would not listen. Isaiah's prophecies were fulfilled in his lifetime, after his death and some are still yet to come. Most importantly, the book contains many Messianic prophecies, all of which point to Christ. God sent Jonah to a foreign kingdom with this message, "Turn back to God now! Judgment is coming." Miraculously, they listened and did just that. The prophet Amos speaks of God's judgment against the northern kingdom of Israel. God spelled out their sins in great detail and warned them that their punishment was coming quickly. History shows us that God kept His word. While there is very little hope in the book of Amos, there is a promise that in a future time, the scattered people of Israel will be brought back and Christ will dwell in their midst. God told the prophet Hosea to marry a whore to symbolize the spiritual infidelity of Israel. In their prosperity, the people had failed to give God thanks and had worshiped idols. The prophecy of Joel describes a famine and devastation sent by God to wake the people up and bring them to repentance. It affected every aspect of life, from the livestock to the crops that made the offerings and worship practices possible. While Joel's prophecy speaks to the people in his day, it also speaks to us in the present who are living in a very evil time. It also speaks of the future when divine retribution will be meted out on "the day of the Lord." The book of Obadiah is a small book with only 21 verses, but it has a much larger message. Through the prophet, God tells what will be done to the Edomites, who scoffed at His people and did not value the things of God. God revealed Himself in the Old Testament through prophecy and miracles. He put His power, His presence, and His will on display to show people He was God, so they might turn to Him. The miracles that Elisha performed often centered on water, oil, food, or life and death. They reflected what was lacking in the people, and they were designed to turn the people back to Him. The life and ministry of Elisha can shed light on our walk as believers if we make applications to ourselves. The prophet Elisha shows us that God doesn't ask us to be perfect, but He does expect us to respond willingly to His call. Elijah was a messenger of God and the story of his own life of faith is a message for us today. During the evil rule of King Ahab and Jezebel, Elijah had great victories like defeating the priests of Baal and despite that victory he ran away in fear wanting to die soon after. Elijah was not perfect, but his devotion to God did not waver and when he faltered, God restored him and continued to use him. Elijah learned that God is not only in the incredible and powerful events, but He is in the small things revealed to us along the way. Elijah's experiences teach that despite our failures; God will continue to work with us if we trust in Him. 1 Kings VF-2535 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. Not much has changed from the time of the early church. By 90 A.D. it had been infiltrated with apostasy and heresy. Don't let the charlatans who have put a black stain on the ministry taint your view of giving. God's not a kill-joy begging for your money. He wants you to get to know Him. And once you do He's looking on the heart to see if the general message has been received, which includes the principles of stewardship and giving: recognizing Him in all that you have and all that you do, because it all comes from Him. Giving is a form of worship, and it is intrinsically tied to your faith. You are either a person who would hold something back from God or a person who has been changed by Him and gives without coercion. Don't get puffed up in pride over your giving. Biblical giving begins with the understanding that the earth is the Lord's, and the tithe belongs to Him. We can learn a lot from the Old Testament patterns: God wants people to give with a willing heart, and worshipping Him should be at the epicenter of our faith and our lives. We should be glad that God gives us the opportunity to participate and accrue rewards in heaven. The close of Micah deals with a future time when the nations will be stripped of their power and humbled, and they will recognize they had rejected Christ and will turn to Him. It is important to reflect on the role of fathers and to recognize the sacrifices they make for their children. The love of our Heavenly Father is apparent in the story of the prodigal son. Micah paints a gloomy picture of the society in his day: the rulers demanded gifts, the judges accepted bribes, and the powerful dictated what they desired. On top of that he observed a blatant disrespect for God, the family unity, and for the dignity of life and living. He warned the people of their terrible fate and yet, right in the middle of gloom and doom he spoke a word of encouragement: God will not abandon His people. Although God did turn His back, He never completely abandoned the people in Micah's day. How much more us if we continue to trust Him and keep our eyes fixed on Him?! Through the prophet Micah, God proclaimed the judgment that would come upon the people because they had departed from Him and His ways. They were corrupt, engaging in acts of greed and false worship. Micah paints a prophetic portrait of Christ as eternal, everlasting, God incarnate, and ruler, both when He came in the flesh, and when He returns to rule over the whole earth in last days, at the end of time. Although the picture that Micah paints is one of doom and calamity, we should take comfort in the knowledge that God has a plan for the future, and heed Micah's warning by putting away our false worship and turning back to God while we're still living in a dispensation of God's forgiveness, mercy and grace. Micah juxtaposes the leaders during his time with the Lord of Hosts during the time God establishes His kingdom on earth. While there will be people that will resist the rule of Jesus Christ in His 1000-year reign, there will be people from many nations who will learn from Him and walk in His paths, regardless of their religious background. In Micah 3, the prophet focuses on the sins of the nation's leadership. The leaders oppressed the people and allowed lawlessness to run rampant. The prophecies of Micah were addressed to a nation consumed with idolatry and false worship. This is not just a problem of the past, it's been a problem since the beginning of time, and it's reflective of the moral, social, and spiritual decline we're seeing in America today. However, it's not all gloom and doom. We're at a turning point, and the prophecies of Micah give us tremendous hope for the future if we turn back to our Judeo-Christian moorings. Do not take your salvation for granted and get complacent lest you engage in spiritual pride. It takes vigilance to stay by the stuff. In the Old Testament the children of Israel drifted away repeatedly and much of the church in America today has departed from the ways of God, but there is still time to return to Him. He promises a new covenant in which He will put His law in our hearts and forgive our iniquity. To those who take Him at His word and trust Him, He will be merciful. A lesson from the Apostle Paul, as someone who once rejected Christ, shows us that we should not get puffed up in our calling as gentiles. The prophet Isaiah foretold of Christ, but he also prophesied that there would be people who would not be able to hear and receive the message. The rejection of Christ by the Jews was part of that prophecy, as well as the grace extended to the gentiles who can hear His word. A lot of churches today present the message of "special sinners" or a "special way of salvation" and neither one of those is biblical. None of us are born to desire God, and none of us have "special sins." We're all born with a dark heart. We're all sinners in need of salvation. We cannot save ourselves, and we must recognize that salvation doesn't come by doing good deeds, or hearing words from a minister that make us "feel good." It comes by hearing the words of faith. In the book of Romans, Paul looks to the prophet Isaiah's declaration about the children of Israel and proclaims that a remnant shall be saved, but not all. He addresses Jews that thought their salvation was automatic. They could not accept that Christ was the end of the law and that the gentiles could be saved without it. Many of Abraham's seed believed they didn't need salvation because they had the covenants, the promises, and the law. Although they were anticipating a Messiah, they rejected Christ and everything He had to say. Paul makes it clear as to "why" in the book of Romans: not all Israel is of Israel. Not all the Jews rejected Christ, but many of the spiritual leaders were against Him because they had no spiritual discernment and they perceived Him as a threat to their position. There were also many people who only followed Jesus for self-serving reasons. The rejection of Christ was foretold by God and there are still many people today who will not hear.
