It is important to reflect on the role of fathers and to recognize the sacrifices they make for their children. The love of our Heavenly Father is apparent in the story of the prodigal son. Though the son had the wrong attitude when he left the father, when he came to his sense and turned back to him, the father received him with joy. Micah paints a gloomy picture of the society in his day: the rulers demanded gifts, the judges accepted bribes, and the powerful dictated what they desired. On top of that he observed a blatant disrespect for God, the family unity, and for the dignity of life and living. He warned the people of their terrible fate and yet, right in the middle of gloom and doom he spoke a word of encouragement: God will not abandon His people. Although God did turn His back, He never completely abandoned the people in Micah's day. How much more us if we continue to trust Him and keep our eyes fixed on Him?! Through the prophet Micah, God proclaimed the judgment that would come upon the people because they had departed from Him and His ways. They were corrupt, engaging in acts of greed and false worship. In Micah 6, God brings His grievance against the people almost as if He is making a legal case. He reminds them of His past deliverances and His goodness to them, but they responded with the wrong attitude. Micah paints a prophetic portrait of Christ as eternal, everlasting, God incarnate, and ruler, both when He came in the flesh, and when He returns to rule over the whole earth in last days, at the end of time. Although the picture that Micah paints is one of doom and calamity, we should take comfort in the knowledge that God has a plan for the future, and heed Micah's warning by putting away our false worship and turning back to God while we're still living in a dispensation of God's forgiveness, mercy and grace. Micah juxtaposes the leaders during his time with the Lord of Hosts during the time God establishes His kingdom on earth. While there will be people that will resist the rule of Jesus Christ in His 1000-year reign, there will be people from many nations who will learn from Him and walk in His paths, regardless of their religious background. During Christ's reign, there will be universal peace, universal religion, and universal prosperity. We can trust God. He will help us, and He will not forget us nor abandon His promises. In Micah 3, the prophet focuses on the sins of the nation's leadership. The leaders oppressed the people and allowed lawlessness to run rampant. Though they had the power to turn back to righteousness and law, the leaders loved evil and abhorred judgment. In this, we see a reflection of the state of our own country today. The prophecies of Micah were addressed to a nation consumed with idolatry and false worship. This is not just a problem of the past, it's been a problem since the beginning of time, and it's reflective of the moral, social, and spiritual decline we're seeing in America today. However, it's not all gloom and doom. We're at a turning point, and the prophecies of Micah give us tremendous hope for the future if we turn back to our Judeo-Christian moorings. Do not take your salvation for granted and get complacent lest you engage in spiritual pride. It takes vigilance to stay by the stuff. In the Old Testament the children of Israel drifted away repeatedly and much of the church in America today has departed from the ways of God, but there is still time to return to Him. He promises a new covenant in which He will put His law in our hearts and forgive our iniquity. To those who take Him at His word and trust Him, He will be merciful. A lesson from the Apostle Paul, as someone who once rejected Christ, shows us that we should not get puffed up in our calling as gentiles. God's not done with the Jewish people, and we should not make the mistake of thinking we know who He's going to save. The picture of election by grace shows us that it's God's prerogative to choose. The prophet Isaiah foretold of Christ, but he also prophesied that there would be people who would not be able to hear and receive the message. The rejection of Christ by the Jews was part of that prophecy, as well as the grace extended to the gentiles who can hear His word. God chooses who He will save, but those chosen should not be boastful or have a sense of entitlement. We cannot know who God choses; our job is to keep trusting and looking to Him. A lot of churches today present the message of "special sinners" or a "special way of salvation" and neither one of those is biblical. None of us are born to desire God, and none of us have "special sins." We're all born with a dark heart. We're all sinners in need of salvation. We cannot save ourselves, and we must recognize that salvation doesn't come by doing good deeds, or hearing words from a minister that make us "feel good." It comes by hearing the words of faith. In the book of Romans, Paul looks to the prophet Isaiah's declaration about the children of Israel and proclaims that a remnant shall be saved, but not all. He addresses Jews that thought their salvation was automatic. They could not accept that Christ was the end of the law and that the gentiles could be saved without it. God wants trust, not perfection and for that trust there is eternal salvation through Him. Many of Abraham's seed believed they didn't need salvation because they had the covenants, the promises, and the law. Although they were anticipating a Messiah, they rejected Christ and everything He had to say. Paul makes it clear as to "why" in the book of Romans: not all Israel is of Israel. Some of them had the capacity to respond; many did not. The same is true today, and until God gives the capacity, no one can receive. Not all the Jews rejected Christ, but many of the spiritual leaders were against Him because they had no spiritual discernment and they perceived Him as a threat to their position. There were also many people who only followed Jesus for self-serving reasons. The rejection of Christ was foretold by God and there are still many people today who will not hear. The Apostle Paul is an example of one called by God, who rejected Christ until God turned him around. In the end, God will have those He desires to have whether Jew or Gentile. Every Jew that you encounter today will say that the mother must be Jewish in order for her child to be Jewish, yet there is no scriptural validation for this doctrine. What will become of the children of God if the church is not instructing them in the Bible? A minister is supposed to teach and correct the people in meekness. That is not weak or as a pushover, but in full strength and paradoxically gentle. By chastening those who resist and are opposed to the gospel, proper teaching can bring about repentance and free them from the snare of the devil to the knowledge of the truth rooted in Christ. Jesus is the door, the only way in. The starting point of our relationship with Him is repentance, a changing of the mind from our way towards Him. We have all sinned, but some of us have become desensitized to sin and its consequences. The remedy is repentance, a changing of the mind from our way to God's way. We cannot truly change our mind and feel godly sorrow unless we come under the conviction of the Holy Spirit. It is a change that can only come from the inside. With the kings of Judah and Israel, the pattern has always been that when the leadership is corrupt, it trickles down. Focusing on the period of 930-900 B.C., we see how God used prophets to rebuke kings in an effort to get them back on track. It took courage and faith for these prophets to communicate a hard message from God. Not every leader received His correction, but the record shows that those who did, He was merciful to help and deliver. In this day and age, God is still looking for people who will receive His correction, no matter how unpleasant, knowing that it is for our good. Incidents in the lives of David and Jeroboam show that God sometimes uses prophets to bring our sins to light. It takes courage and loyalty for a prophet to speak an unpopular truth. Both kings had tried to cover up their sins, but it is impossible to hide our sins from God. God wants us to come to Him and be honest. The caricature of prophets has hurt the entire church. To get a clearer picture of what a true prophet of God looks like, we turn to the early prophets of the Old Testament: specifically, Miriam, Deborah, Samuel, and an unknown prophet in the book of Judges. Their character and function varied, but they all had one thing in common: they got their messages and directives from God. To discern between a true prophet and a false one, you must know God's word. The false prophets are always in large numbers, telling the people what they want to hear rather than the truth of God's word. When we look at the prophets of old, there's no question that much of our understanding about modern-day prophets is erroneous. Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of Old Testament prophets did not look into a crystal ball to divine the future. They were men who were used as mouthpieces to utter God's message in words or in actions that held symbolic meaning. In this message, Pastor Scott dives into the Hebrew words for "prophet" and the Old Testament examples that reveal the definition and function of a true biblical prophet. Christ's work at the cross is not just one-dimensional. We are not able to reconcile ourselves to God. He completely reconciled all things, including us, to Himself by the work of Christ, resulting in peace. He makes us new creatures on the inside while we are still in the same decaying sinful bodies. Sin is a universal disease for mankind, and we are in an ongoing process of coming short of the glory of God. It is only because of Christ's obedience to pay the price for us in His work at the cross that we are able to be in right standing before God. The law had to be there so we would know that there are consequences for sin – the wrath of God – but our salvation does not come through the law. We must trust God and have faith that we are justified once and for all in His work at the cross. Paul is addressing two groups of people, their reaction to the cross and what that reaction produces. Although both products sound static in the English, the Greek reveals both are processes. To those who have rejected Christ, the cross is moronic and has produced the process of perishing. To those who have trusted Christ, the cross is the reality of life eternal that human ability cannot obtain. While the message of the cross creates division, it is also the unifying force of the church, who has become a community of people heralding its message; it is the prototype of what we will become and the solution to all of the problems we face today. 1 Corinthians 1:18 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. The cross cannot remain an event of the past; without the cross, there would be no resurrection. We can either flee from the cross or embrace it as the means of a slow death of our old nature. Christ's death on His cross brought an end to the jurisdiction of the Law. We have union with Christ in death, resurrection, and ascension when we take up our own cross. Just as eyewitnesses may see any event from different perspectives and recall different details, each of the Gospel writers has a slightly different focus in the information he presents. Though it may not be as clear in the King James English, the text of Psalm 22 in the Hebrew clearly depicts the suffering of Christ. Although the psalm was written by David, the details cannot possibly refer to his own suffering: it is a prophetic picture of Christ written a thousand years before it became history. There is no way anyone could fake these things; they would have to somehow control the reactions of the mocking enemies. In the Old Testament, in order to be made right with God, there was a temporary way into God's presence once a year on the day of atonement. This set time was reoccurring and something that God laid out as a shadow that pointed to the shed blood of Christ sufficient to cover us once and for all. His shed blood, unlike any other blood sacrifice, had and still has the power to wash and cleanse us, to forgive, to restore, to reconcile and to bring us back into communion and fellowship with God.
