Hope is what can keep us going through hard times in life. But what kind of hope do we have as Christians? Is it something only for the future? Are there promises we can look to now? And how do we know God will keep them?⛪CHURCH WITH UTBThis sermon is part of a weekly service which is accessed online - check it out.
We can see from the first two chapters of Thessalonians that the church was going through a difficult and turbulent time: persecution and false teaching had an effect. In this final chapter, Paul encourages the church to focus on what's most important, how God wants the church to be. ⛪CHURCH WITH UTB This sermon is part of a weekly service which is accessed online - check it out.

It can be very easy in the Christian life to get stuck in a rut - to turn up to church and do the same things that we always do, but just 'go through the motions'. In this passage Jesus explains that we need to do things differently with him. ⛪CHURCH WITH UTB Because church doesn't need to be complicated - check it out.

A popular Christian song speaks of Jesus "fighting our battles." We'd like that to be true - but is it? In this passage, God was teaching the Israelites something important about what it means to fight for him. Matthew's gospel was written primarily to a Jewish audience, so he is careful in how he uses the name of God. He focuses on the kingdom of heaven, emphasizing who the king is, what His kingdom is about, and who will enter the kingdom. We are told to seek His kingdom and His righteousness first. One of the biggest and most common questions in the Christian life is "Why?" Why did this happen to me or us; or why does someone not listen to God? The Bible often doesn't answer the 'why' question specifically, but in this passage we have a rare glimpse into the reason why God acted as he did with Pharaoh. ⛪CHURCH WITH UTB Because church doesn't need to be complicated - check it out.
Are there any consequences of ignoring God? If you look round at the world, you might think there aren't - people seem to ignore God with impunity. However, we need to heed the warning of Exodus and guard against the attitude of disbelief and hard-heartedness. ⛪CHURCH WITH UTB Because church doesn't need to be complicated - check it out.
Have you ever looked at the opposition Christians are facing in the world - or maybe even your own life - and thought "what chance do I have?" The beginning of a series for the sake of two people who are dear friends but far from the knowledge of God. Bad experiences with the church at large or a "brand" of Christianity cause many to be turned off on the church. There is corruption in all of humanity, so we should not ignore God because of that. A look at the church history surrounding Easter and at the traditions of men becoming dogma show why we should not simply trust the institution, but we can still trust God. In these final chapters of Romans, Paul is explaining how the gospel should make a difference to our lives. In this passage, we think about how we should be as a church: we should love one another sincerely. This is especially important when we are dealing with people who have done us wrong. ⛪CHURCH WITH UTB Because church doesn't need to be complicated - check it out.

But ultimately, it's based on the assumption that justice is good, yeah or that there is a thing called justice that is driving us to the heart of the gospel of God, who Himself is justice personified. So don't think that in dealing with this situation, you're losing sight of Scripture. You're not. It is about, again, getting back in the Word and seeing what God says about us. And not just taking you know, Galatians 3:27 and 28. There is neither slave nor free, Jew nor Greek, male nor female. A lot of people use that Scripture to say, therefore we should have the conversation. That Scripture's not doing what we think it's doing. It's not. Have a conversation, look back at Scripture. What is the question behind the question? It is a question of justice, and all of our hearts desire for justice is found. Bless the Lord in the God of the Bible. I take students to the arrangement of the beginning of Genesis, where in the Hebrew Bible, it doesn't end with the domination of humankind over creation, ruling over dominion. It ends with the Sabbath, the chapter one ends with a Sabbath. So, it's gotten humans resting together. So, it's a very different picture from sort of humans now being released to run around with chainsaws and bulldozers or whatever and rule over the thing. It's rather a picture of coming to this place of resting in the creation, resting in the presence of the Creator, this quietness of spirit. And I think that the Scriptures begin there and then from there lay a foundation around what it is to be lovers and keepers of the earth that God has entrusted to us.---In this interview you will hear Mark Buchanan (Associate Professor, Pastoral Theology, Ambrose University, Calgary, Alberta) and Rev. So, the arts are actually far more ancient disciplines of interacting with the Scripture in a way that sometimes actually gets past our mind and into our heart and our soul at a different level. You know, you hear a great story, you watch a great movie, and all of a sudden, it's a tearjerker, and you can't help it, you're just moved emotionally. Well, that does something to you and the stories we find in the Bible are doing that as well, right? You're reading these characters; you're reading what's happening with these stories that are unfolding. You read sometimes terrible stories of things that we don't even want to utter. And sometimes I'm reading the stories and I'm emotionally moved either to anger or to tears and just imagining the heartache that some of these people are experiencing. And that gets truth in us in a way that dissecting it doesn't.---In this episode, Joanna la Fleur interviews Worship Pastor Matt Unruh about how he thoughtfully leads congregations with Scripture and song, and the role of the Bible in musical worship. Art opens us to newness, to unexpected possibilities and the Gospel does the same...opens us to newness, the resurrection, the promise, a new heaven, new Earth. So, it opens us to newness and unexpected possibilities so I think there's this sort of parallel between the Gospel and the arts. One other thing I would want to say is that both the arts and the Gospel invite us to a posture of receptivity. What we like in our culture is control and management. Art says, listen, listen, look, receive and that posture of receptivity I think is essential for us if we're going to flourish as human beings.---Today's guest is John Franklin, interviewed by Rev. Studying grammar, particularly antonyms like "common" and "profane", helps us better understand the original meanings of the Hebrew words related to holiness and sanctification. We have a language problem, where holiness is made synonymous with perfection; it cannot mean perfection or sinlessness except when speaking of God and His attributes. When God declares people holy, they are set apart and dedicated, not perfect. It is not the case that all things work together for good. Rather, to the ones loving and completely trusting God, He enters in to straighten out the mess of our circumstance for a purpose. We are transformed through the crisis into Christ's likeness. It doesn't matter what brought on the circumstance. What matters is that we are amening the fact that He will enter in with all synergy because we love Him. It is necessary to lay a foundation in doctrine, and then make an application in our lives. This is what the apostle Paul is doing in Romans 12. We are to yield ourselves wholly to God as a living sacrifice. From there we can truly worship God and be shaped by His wisdom and His will. This does not mean we will never deviate, bit if we yield our hearts and minds to Him, He transforms us, and there can be a fresh wave of dedication. In counterbalance to those who crept into the church and led people astray, Jude admonishes us to keep ourselves in the love of God, expectantly awaiting God's mercy. In this message we get an incredible insight into what God's mercy looks like, both to us and in the man-to-man relationship. We can see God's mercy in the context that Jude intended and apply it to our own lives by staying focused on what God has done for us. In doing so we accomplish the purpose of keeping ourselves in the love of God and staying the course toward life eternal. Every point that Jude makes in his corrective letter is to counterbalance the apostasy creeping into the church. After telling us why we need to contend for the faith, he tells us how: build on the Architect's plans, praying with the help of the Holy Spirit; keep ourselves in God's love; and look for the mercy of our Lord. We have ups and downs on this spiritual battlefield but being part of the body of Christ means we have a purpose in His body. When it comes to the work we are called to do for God, in frustration some may ask, “What's the point?” Nothing God calls us to do is small in His eyes. It counts to Him. We are to be diligent and faithful in the smallest things for God, like the vigilant gatekeepers, the singers that were the spiritual vitality and the Levites (the minutia men). Despite the quality of his character, Nehemiah was under constant attack by enemies. They used the tricks of the devil: sending emissaries from hell or close by, egregious lies, entrapment, and emotional sabotage, but that did not deter Nehemiah from the work God sent him to do. We face the same tactics of opposition in building God's church today, but if we keep our hands to the plow, God will get the victory.
