April 24, 2022What teachings are we filling the city with? Do our witness and work in the world bring any cause for concern among the enemies of God? April 17. 2022 Easter SundayA lot can happen in a week! Last Sunday, the crowds were asking Christ to save them, and before the week was over, those cries changed to crucify him. It begs the question: are we dependable disciples or a wavering witnesses? Despite the ways we sometimes show up in the world – Christ still trusts us to share the Good News that he lived for us, died for us and rose again on the third day. If Christ sent you, as he sent Mary, to go and tell the world that you had seen him – what would you say about the third day?"What Do You Have to Say About the Third Day?" - Rev. 4/10/2022Palm & Passion SundayPoint of view matters. If you watch a parade from street level vs. a balcony above -- you see things differently. If you watch a parade from the sidelines vs. the moving procession -- you see things differently. If you watch from home, you can enjoy the music, but you miss out on the community and camaraderie of the crowd -- not to mention the prizes. Our Gospel text today tells the story of a parade with the most fantabulous prize ever -- salvation. The Holy Week celebration has begun! Where are you in the crowd? "A Palm's Perspective" - Rev. 3/13/2022More often than not, a confession is associated with something not-so-good. But, theologians describe Psalm 27 as a “confession of trust.” In the midst of attacks and persecution …. David confesses what is true about God to get him through the hard times. The Lord is my light and my salvation. The Lord is my stronghold – who holds me close in hard times. 3/6/2022In today's Gospel, Jesus stands right where most of us are – somewhere between our baptism and boldly living out our baptismal vows. After his baptism, Christ is driven by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tested. Today, we begin our Lenten journey – submitting to a season of examination, so that we might be fit to serve. The text reminds us, that the enemy never gives up on distracting the children of God. Instead, he returns at an opportune time … And so, it's always the opportune time to stay focused on God's will and word."The Opportune Time" - Rev. 2/27/2022We have had quite a soundtrack this month -- as we explored the theme: This Is How We Know What Love Is. Last, but not least, Jesus says: Let's Stay Together -- in times of chaos, from coronavirus to corrupt leadership. No – we're not called to love the harmful actions of others, but we are called to continue to operate in God's love. Or, as Jesus taught: remain in my love, abide in me and I will abide in you. 2/20/2022As Believers, it is imperative that we carry the presence of the Lord with us at all times, in all situations (good and bad). We are to be mindful that as adverse situations come our way, the battle is not ours, it's the Lord's. Therefore, we are to be encouraged as well. The God we serve is a provider, as well as a restorer. 2/13/2022Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. That is one of the most popular love letters of all time -- written by the Apostle Paul to the church at Corinth. And, if we checked our spiritual mail today – we might find that God is writing us a love letter. Moreover, we might find that is sending us as love letters to the world. After all, Jesus taught that the world will recognize us as disciples because of how we love. 1/9/2022When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, it is a lifetime commitment, not a seasonal thing. As we commit ourselves to the Lord, we must embrace the 'total package' of God; that is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. In our lifetime, we will face many changes in our society; yet, the Word Of God ALWAYS remains the same. We should ALWAYS remember that accepting the Lord in our lives provides us with TRUE 'life insurance'."Remember the Day..." - Vernon MooreLuke 3: 21-22 and Acts 8: 14-21Bulletin flipbook: View https://pubhtml5.com/homepage/ymvqSubscribe to Worship 1st Podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite player. 1/2/2022As we celebrate Epiphany of the Lord Sunday, which marks the 12th day of Christmas, we might recall the song full of gifts none of us want – turtle doves and partridges in pear trees. But the 12th day of Christmas is really about the one who was born to set us free. Epiphany marks the day when the Wise Men finally laid eyes on the Savior – and opened their hearts in worship and opened their treasured gifts before him. This Epiphany and beyond, let's consider how our encounter with the Light of the World will open our hearts and re-arrange our plans and priorities this year. Because, once we've seen the light, we are changed and called to be world changers. "2022: The Year of Open Eyes and Open Hearts" - Rev. 12/12/2021Today's scriptures are like a spoon full of medicine – it might seem bitter, but, it will make us better. The prophet Zephaniah and the Apostle John offer the same sermon: Repent! Esther is one of only 2 books of the Bible that never mentions God. The Jewish people were facing oppression and discrimination – quite similar to what some ethnic groups are facing today. Some ask: where is God when folks longing for freedom are welcomed with whips to the land of the free and home of the brave? Months after the Olympics have ended, you may still be able to remember the name of the first-place medalist in your favorite sport. But, it's not likely that you remember who came in last. “Mirror, mirror on the wall — who is the fairest of them all?” Today's scripture might paraphrase the question from the old fairy tale and ask: “mirror, mirror on the wall — who is the most Christlike after all?” James reminds us that those who hear the word of God, but don't do it, are like those who look in a mirror and forget their own image. Our work as disciples is simply to reflect God in this world. So, ask yourself: Mirror, mirror on the wall, am I reflecting God above all?"Mirror, Mirror: Reflecting God's Goodness" - Rev. With so many things competing for our time and attention — it's easy to see why some struggle to worship as we should. The Psalmist said that he longed to be in the house of God. Is that our testimony? Better is one day in God's house than 1,000 elsewhere — Psalm 84 declares. We all have our “elsewheres” ... that rob us of time with God. What would life be like if we abandoned our elsewheres and spent the day with God? For better is One Day...."One Day" - Rev. When adding to the Soundtrack of Our Faith, not every song has to be a classic hymn. Sometimes, a classic soul track like “Love Train” has the perfect message in the music. After all, God so loved the world that he sent His son (and each of us) into the world to bless and restore it. Let's get on board! In the midst of negative news stories, rising COVID rates and your own personal crises — on what do you hang your hope. What is your go-to song to get motivated? What do you love about it -- the music, the lyrics or simply the mood it evokes? We all have songs that help us get the job done! But, I wonder, does the song change if "the job" is kingdom work? What music helps you do what God has called you to do? What music would you share as part of your testimony or to explain your theology? Let's contemplate the Soundtrack of Our Faith. "The Soundtrack of our Faith" - Rev. America was built on the idea of Manifest Destiny — the notion of expanding one's territory. But I wonder, what are the things of God that God would have us to desire more of? What does God want us to pursue with faithfulness and fidelity? Just imagine a world where manifest destiny meant acquiring -- not land or money, but more wisdom, more compassion, more faithfulness. Enlarge our territory Lord -- according to the destiny you would have us to manifest for our selves and the world. "Manifest Destiny" - Rev. Scripture tells us that all things work together for good for those who love the Lord. One way that happens, is that those who love God choose to live in ways that show love to others. Not just when we're in the mood to love or when we feel others deserve love. Instead, we are called to follow Christ's example of sharing agape love -- that changes lives and the world. A good coach can take a team from mediocre to magnificent — especially if the players are committed to learning the playbook. In 1 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul is coaching the church at Corinth to become the best disciples — best team players for Christ — they can be. What is the first thing you notice when you look in the mirror? A new gray hair? A pimple? Laugh lines? I wonder if you see what God sees? Have you ever wanted something that was not necessarily what God wanted for you? In this graduation season, I wonder if you can recall your favorite teacher of all time. Surely, they went the extra mile, and worked hard on their lesson plans — maybe even late into the night. Nicodemus was a Pharisee — teacher of the law — who went to Jesus late one night for answers that no one else could give. Jesus' reply: no one will see the kingdom of God, unless they are born again. Even now, Jesus — the greatest teacher to ever live — offers us new life and calls us to lead others to new life. “New Birth and New Blessings!” - Rev. This week we celebrated the birth of the church -- known as Pentecost. It's important to remember Pentecost isn’t just a day – it’s a way of life! Each and every day, the Spirit of the Living God is falling fresh -- teaching us, guiding us, comforting us, and empowering us to be the church. Will you allow the fire of Pentecost to light your way and ignite a passion for God’s purposes in you? Will you allow the wind of the Spirit to move you to make a difference in this world? “Spirit Fall Fresh” - Rev. In his final encounter with the disciples before Ascending to heaven, Jesus reminded us one last time of our calling and commission. As usual, the disciples’ attention was on their own questions, curiosities and desires. So, Jesus told them to focus! And get to work! Love is the key! Sure, there are plenty dos and don’t dos in the Bible. But Jesus makes it plain: love others like I’ve loved you; remain in my love, as I have remained in the Father’s love.
