When I think of surrendering my life to God, I think of Carrie Underwood's song, “Jesus Take The Wheel”. I imagine myself letting go of the steering wheel of my life, and trusting in Him to steer me through the trials I face. But life isn't a highway, and giving the Lord control over everything is a lot more complicated than just letting go of the steering wheel. In today's message, Pastor Jeff is going to teach us about what it means to truly surrender to the Holy Spirit and let Him control every aspect of our lives.

In 2005, Carrie Underwood's song “Jesus, Take the Wheel” captured a feeling many of us know well. It tells the story of a young mother who, after losing control of her car on an icy road, throws her hands up and surrenders control to Jesus. The song became a massive success because it tapped into a foundational truth of the spiritual life: if you want to truly gain control of your life, you must first relinquish it. It is a powerful call for divine surrender, a recognition that our own efforts often lead us down dangerous roads.This idea of letting go is what Paul describes as living a Spirit-led life. He contrasts walking "in the flesh" with walking "in the Spirit." The flesh represents the parts of us wounded by past pain, while the Spirit is the divine image of God within us. When we let Jesus take the wheel, we stop allowing our hurts and baggage to direct our lives. Instead, we allow the Christ consciousness within us to lead the way, transforming how we see ourselves, treat others, and engage with the world.

Control is our defense mechanism. It's a natural response when life feels out of control. Who or what are you trying to control? What if, instead of returning to your natural response you turned to something supernatural: trust over control? When we learn to trust God instead of leaning on our own understanding we find joy. We see this in the life of Joseph. Full surrender allows us to experience forgiveness, gratitude, and an eternal perspective.

When Jesus takes the wheel of our lives, we shift from allowing the wounded parts of our lives to control and govern how we treat people, handle situations, and make decisions. Instead, we allow the God-image and Christ's consciousness within to lead the way. When we allow our hurts, our wounds, and our baggage to dictate, determine, and direct the course of our lives, things go astray. Instead, as followers of Christ, our goal should be to live a spirit- filled life. But what does that look like? Well, Paul shows us very clearly in today's key passage what happens when we live a spirit- led life.

Rewind about 4 years ago to when my dear friend Ketric Newell told me something I DID NOT want to hear..."Leanne your Self-Imaging curriculum is GREAT, but I don't want you to teach it to the teenage girls at The Teen Dream Center....YET."Ugggh! The nerve of him to tell me it wasn't ready --  or that I wasn't ready! (Or whatever I perceived him to be saying to me.)But now I can see that he had a VERY good reason to say that to me, and it was this: I was still teaching "self-love" and "self-worth" as something that you do (strictly) through your OWN strength. In other words, it was this hyper-independent reliance on SELF to do all the heavy-lifting. And yes I was a little bit "butt hurt" (as the kids say nowadays) when I first heard him say that, but that's only because I didn't yet GET IT!That is...until I DID get it.Because in a world that often encourages self-sufficiency, this concept of letting go and allowing God to take the lead can feel a little daunting (or if you're anything like me....totally FOREIGN!)
