In the pantheon of intellectual giants of modernconservatism, standing first among equals is the late professor Harry Jaffa. Jaffa, who influenced generations of students from his academic perch at Claremont Graduate University, might have been the 20th century's greatest scholar on the thought of Abraham Lincoln. Jaffa, who along with JWI Founder & Co-Director Hadley Arkes was a student of the great Leo Strauss, produced two seminal books on Lincoln. First, in 1958, he gave us Crisis of the House Divided, a close analysis of the Lincoln Douglas debates, andthen forty two years later, A New Birth of Freedom, which was devoted to the larger project of the causes of the Civil War, the Election of 1860, and the secession thereafter. A former student of Jaffa, and close confidant, Edward Erler, has now come forth with a new book Prophetic Statesmanshipfrom Encounter Books that Jaffa himself entrusted Erler to write as a follow-on to A New Birth of Freedom after Jaffa died about a decade ago. We are deeply pleased then to be joined by Prof. Erler for a wide ranging discussion of this important new work on Lincoln, with a relevance to theissues at the heart of our present way of life that is quite striking. Erler is Professor of Political Science emeritus fromCalifornia State University, San Bernardino, where he taught Political Philosophy and Constitutional Law, and served as Department Chairman from 1984-1991. He is the Author of numerous books and law reviews and professionaljournals, among the most recent, are “From Subjects to Citizens: the Social Contract Origins of American Citizenship”; “Marbury v. Madison and the Progressive Transformation of Judicial Power”;. He received a B.A. in Political Science from San Jose State University, on a grant from the G.I. Bill for services rendered, a M.A. and Ph.D. from the Claremont Graduate School. He has been a fellow at the National Humanities Center and served as Director of theBicentennial for the National Endowment for the Humanities.Purchase Prophetic StatesmanRead more of Prof. Erlier at The American Mind

I fought the law... and the law won. Some fight against the law - the moral law, the Law of God; some fight their own nature to keep the law. And in the end, they sing the same, sad song: "The law won." On Friday we kicked off a new study in the book of Romans with a look at Chapter 7, and our abject inability to meet God's requirements. The problem is, I need a new me! Paul will show us that we have that, in the New Birth. This divine revelation is essential, because it's only by knowing who Jesus is that we can be transformed to be like Him—holy. Holiness cannot be achieved through personal righteousness alone, as in nominal churches; it comes through the New Birth experience, which includes being baptized in the Holy Ghost. For more lessons and sermons, follow our YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@GBT

Rev. Ruth Miller explores the possibility that our life, today, is in a different kind of womb--and we are about to be born.
Two things are absolutely essential in order to salvation: deliverance from the guilt and penalty of sin; and deliverance from the power and presence of sin. The one is secured by the mediatorial work of Christ, the other is accomplished by the effectual operations of the Holy Spirit. The one is the blessed result of what the Lord Jesus did for God's people, the other is the glorious consequence of what the Holy Spirit does in God's people.

In this message from Pastor Tom, we dive into James 1:13-21, focusing on the theme of spiritual rebirth. Pastor Tom highlights how God, through the word of truth, gives us new life, transforming us from death to life, offering cleansing, and making us new creations. He emphasizes that this new birth is rooted in God's loving choice and is a promise of future redemption for all of creation. As believers, we are called to live as a praise and promise of God's work, sharing this message of hope and restoration with others.
Why is Christianity based on the Death and Resurrection of Christ? Man cannot save himself. Everything of the Old Creation is only worthy of being consigned to judgment and death (Isaiah 53:6). Only then can God bring forth a new creation, a rebirth by resurrection (1Peter 1:3). In His death as the last Adam He took all the sin and curse of the original creation and brought it to judgment thru His death. Then as the 2nd Adam in His resurrection, He became the head of a new creation, the firstborn and first-fruits from the dead, the first of a new breed of redeemed humanity, recreated through their union with Christ (John 14:19, Romans 6:1-11, Colossians 2:12-13, 3:1,10-15, 2Corinthians 5:17, Ephesians 2:1-10, 4:24).

Have you ever wondered why Jesus insisted on the necessity of being born again? Greg Mohr uncovers the deep significance of the new birth for personal transformation and its ripple effect on others.
It's become a common worry in America: why can't we listen to each other? Well, 60 years ago, the great American writer Studs Terkel showed us all what happens when we do listen to the stories and perspectives of others, when he wrote his landmark book, Division Street, and Ash Carter tells us why the book is more relevant than ever. Then Simon Mills joins us from London with his investigation into how and why Aperol has, like a bubbly orange tsunami, overtaken cocktail lounges from Naples to New York—and why Italians fear it's keeping down birth rates. And finally, Jennifer Gould reports from New York City on how Trump is rolling out the red carpet for kleptocrats and anyone looking to bribe U.S. government officials.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This message explores Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus in John 3, where He offers the invitation of new birth—both as a first-time decision and a call to deeper life in the Spirit. Nicodemus, a respected religious leader, wrestles with surrendering his status and control, much like we do today. Jesus makes it clear that seeing God's Kingdom requires more than belief—it requires fully embracing the Spirit-filled life.
Why do some believe in Christ's message while others do not? In this sermon titled on the new birth, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones answers this by appealing to the biblical doctrine of the new birth. This new birth is an act of God by which He regenerates the hearts and minds of fallen people. From this act of regeneration comes the new life with new desires and dispositions. This new person lives a Spirit-empowered life that evidences the supernatural work of Christ. In this it is seen that regeneration does not merely change one's standing with God, but it transforms their very hearts and minds. Because this new life is brought about by the work of the Spirit, it is kept by the work of the Spirit so that once a person has been born again they cannot lose this new nature. The new person cannot become old again, for it is the Spirit that forms and keeps them. Once the Spirit transforms the believer, they will seek a life that honors Christ. This seeking of Christ and His kingdom do not make a person new, but it is the result of the Spirit regenerating them and making them a new creation in Christ Jesus the Savior.
