In this episode, we continue our book study of The Spirit-Filled Home with Chapter Three: Parenting Challenges. Whether you are reflecting on your childhood, working on your own personal maturity, or parenting your children, this episode is for you. This episode is all about the relationship between personal maturity and effective parenting. In it, we give a brief overview of the five stages of maturity development according to The Life Model and how God designed us to grow and relate to one another. Infants need smiles, security, and synchronization to develop emotional stability. Children need to cultivate discernment and discipline to carry into adulthood. With hope and grace for you, we're covering these thoughts and more. Thank you for joining us - father-daughter duo Marcus Warner and Stephanie Warner - on the trail to a deeper walk with God!
“Then God went up from him in the place where he had spoken with him. And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.” - Genesis 35:13-15 ESV
The road to self-acceptance requires some effort, as well as an understanding of the truth, but it is worth it. Self-acceptance makes it possible to live in peace with ourselves and experience the best life possible, the life we were created to live.
“God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. And God said to him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.” - Genesis 35:9-11 ESV

This week we reframed Hebrews 4:11, showing that “strive” doesn’t mean working harder, but being attentive and intentional so we don’t drift from the rest already ours in Christ. We also talked about why returning to rest or our awareness of union with God, can feel difficult. Our nervous system can default into threat mode, emotions may be surfacing, or we’re trying to “perform” rest. Through breath, grounding touch, and gentle awareness, we signal safety and allow the soul to soften. Rest isn’t something we earn; it’s something we remember. When we quiet ourselves like a child resting with its mother, we rediscover our true home in God’s love. The third part of our chat on Human Identity!
Romans 7:13-25 — Having unpacked numerous New Testament passages in the first part of this series, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones moves to an in-depth look at three possible identities of the wretched man: the regenerate, the unregenerate, or the immature Christian. In this sermon on Romans 7:13-25 titled “The Wretched Man Identity (2),” Dr. Lloyd-Jones shows that the identity of this wretched man in Romans 7 is not the regenerate man as this is incompatible with other scriptural teaching. But neither is it describing an unregenerate man, as the man is experiencing genuine conviction of sin. He shows an awareness of his own weakness and failure, but there is no mention of the Holy Spirit and indwelling Christ in the text, thus it cannot be an unregenerate man. Having shown he is neither a regenerate or unregenerate man, Dr. Lloyd-Jones turns to the question of whether this can be a description of an immature believer. He emphatically denies this possibility because no matter the situation, it is impossible for a Christian to utter the cry of verse 24. The Christian does not despair. No, he fights sin and uses restraint and care to mortify his flesh. So then how do we identify this man? How are we to understand the meaning of Paul's words? Dr. Lloyd-Jones directs our attention to Paul's intent in writing this passage. The intent is to show that the law is not salvific. This is the point Paul is trying to highlight in dramatic fashion. When man tries to keep the law, he falls under conviction, but has no hope. He doesn't know or understand the truth of the gospel. This, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones is the central meaning of this difficult passage of Scripture. In Dr Lloyd-Jones's own words, the man described in Romans 7 is “a man who is experiencing an intense conviction of sin, a man who has been given to see, by the Spirit, the holiness of the Law; and he feels utterly condemned. He is aware of his weakness for the first time, and his complete failure” ( D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Exposition of Chapter 7:1-8:4 The Law: Its Functions and Limits, Edinburgh, Banner of Truth, 1973, p.255). Paul is showing us that there is one great and glorious hope for us. What the law could not do, thanks be to God, the grace of God provides.

Romans 7:25 — Is the apostle Paul's exclamation of wretchedness in Romans 7:24-25 a description of the regenerate man at his very best in this life? Who exactly is speaking? Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones explores the exact meaning of this well-known and difficult passage in this sermon on Romans 7:25 titled “The Wretched Man Identity.” As the first sermon in a two-part sermon series, Dr. Lloyd-Jones walks us through seeming parallel passages of Scripture to shed light on the question of the identity of this man — is this a regenerate or unregenerate man? Or perhaps an immature Christian? At first glance, these passages seem to describe the same groaning and state of misery as the man in Romans 7:24-25. But after examining 1 Corinthians 9:27, Ephesians 6, and Galatians 5 closely, Dr. Lloyd-Jones shows that the these passages, while appearing similar on the surface, are different, indeed opposite, of the man we find in Romans 7. These texts are referring to a certainty of triumph and victory because of the role of the Holy Spirit. It is the success of a regenerate man who is sanctifying himself by the Spirit and is thereby able to crucify sin. By laying the hermeneutical foundation of examining other passages, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones prepares his listeners for the second part to this series by teaching that Romans 7:24-25, in spite of every resolution of the man, is a declaration of captivity. The law of sin in his members is too strong and he is sold under sin. Listen as Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones carefully exegetes this passage, contrasts it with other New Testament passages, and lays the groundwork to discuss in-depth the identity of this man.

Birth order studies are fascinating. Older brothers, younger sisters, only children… there's a good bit of consistency in the characteristics ascribed to each category. So, what is the spiritual equivalent to the sibling that gets blamed for everything, run over, or just plain ignored? We'll look at spiritual family parallels in today's study. Paul writes a letter to a young man that he pointed to Jesus and after accepting him as his Lord and Savior, Timothy joins Paul in his travels as he starts churches and visits the ones he had already established. The point of Paul writing this letter is because there are issues beginning to crop up with the Gentile church in Ephesus and Paul is going to leave Timothy in Ephesus to confront the issues. The transformation that Jesus makes in people when they dedicate their lives to him is amazing! Just look at the one who is writing this letter—Paul! He was so full of himself and who he thought he was until he met Jesus on the road to Damascus. Paul was completely changed from the inside out. He was given a new identity in Jesus and Jesus will do the same for you!

In Genesis 1:26-27, God declares, "Let us make mankind in our image, according to our likeness." In part eight of "Your True Identity," Brother Duane explains that humanity's creation in God's image and likeness defines our true identity. This divine distinction separates humans from angels, animals, and all other forms of creation. Key features of God's image include dominion and authority, the distinction between male and female, sovereignty, creativity, and the concept of work. Two aspects that spark debate are judgment and justice. The ability to judge is a fundamental aspect of God's image in humanity. Jesus instructed in John 7:24 to "judge with righteous judgment" instead of judging based on outward appearance.Sin can damage and distort God's image in humans but it cannot eliminate it. We can either celebrate this image through righteousness in Christ or pervert it through sin. Today, many social movements that seek justice often commit injustices themselves, which distorts the image of God. Embrace "Your True Identity" and reflect God's restored image through Christ's righteousness.
In part seven of "Your True Identity," Brother Duane teaches that we were created in God's image and likeness and that this image is our true identity. Our real identity doesn't come from our feelings or personal views, but from our Creator God. Being made in God's image is what makes us human and gives us our true worth. The attributes of God's image in people encompass several key traits: the ability to rule and have dominion, being created as male and female, having sovereignty and free will, creativity, the power of words, and the capacity to judge. He stresses that while sin can distort and damage God's image in us, it cannot change or eradicate it. The image of Jesus is a perfect example of God manifesting His image in us.
Do you feel like you are crawling through life like a worm when God has created you to soar like a butterfly? Brother Duane teaches the importance of renewing our minds as Christians. The "Spirit of Our Mind" refers to our attitude or mindset, which influences not only what we think but also how we think. This message emphasizes the need to adopt a biblical worldview rather than a secular perspective. Exploring the metaphor of metamorphosis, we discover that transformation works from the inside out, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly or a tadpole becoming a bullfrog. By aligning our thoughts with God's truth, a metamorphosis occurs within us. This change is not the result of an external effort, but rather through God's Spirit working within us. This inner transformation renews our minds through His Word, leading to true freedom and spiritual growth.
In part five of "Your True Identity," Brother Duane teaches how to discover your true identity through God's Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus discovered He was God's Son by studying Scripture at age 12, we can explore God's Word to learn who we are in Christ.Today, too many people allow their parents, friends, society, or past mistakes to define them. But God wants to reveal your real identity through His promises. When you read the truth in Scripture, like being "more than a conqueror" or an "overcomer," the Holy Spirit can speak directly to your heart and affirm, "That's who you are."Your confidence and purpose come from knowing your identity in Christ, not from your struggles or failures. Search God's Word and discover who God says you are through His Word. Your confidence, purpose, and destiny all flow from understanding your true identity in Christ Jesus.
Every day, we face a battle whether to walk in the flesh or follow the Holy Spirit. In part four of "Your True Identity," Brother Duane teaches that your old life in Adam is gone. We have been transformed into a new creation and have a new identity in Christ. Our past sins no longer define us. We're no longer a slave to sin, darkness, and death. God has washed us clean, made us holy, and declared us righteous through Jesus Christ. However, our flesh—our physical body and unrenewed mind—still tries to pull us back into old habits. Learn how to set your mind on spiritual things and resist Satan's attacks on your identity. Having a spiritual mindset is key to overcoming the desires of the flesh and experiencing the freedom Christ died to give us.
What if everything you think you know about yourself is wrong? In "Your True Identity," Brother Duane reveals the truth about your identity in Christ. Every person starts with an old identity "in Adam" - born with a sinful nature leading to bad choices and separation from God. But when you become a Christian, God completely kills that old identity and gives you a brand new one "in Christ."As Christians, we receive a new spiritual identity, but our minds and bodies still need renewal through God's Word and the Holy Spirit. We are God's workmanship, created for good works—not saved by works, but saved FOR good works. True freedom comes from understanding your new identity in Christ rather than identifying with past sins or current struggles. Discover who God says you are!

Leslie continues the He Is series with important Scriptural keys to finding our identity in Christ. We often have humanly-contrived ideas about "godly womanhood" and they can seem dour and oppressive. But God's vision and purpose for our lives is the opposite - it's amazing, life-giving and beautiful. In this episode, Leslie points us toward refreshing Biblical truths about Christ-centered, godly womanhood, and equips us to find strength and confidence in Christ and not ourselves. While the world says that self-esteem is the answer for our insecurity, in reality we will only gain lasting security when we look away from ourselves and toward Jesus Christ. The question “who am I?” is not nearly as important as the question, “who is He?"For more resources from Leslie, visit https://setapart.org/.
