The third installment in the Yoga Ethics For Modern Living series, this episode explores the third Yama, Asteya, non stealing, through the lens of Kendrick's beef with Drake, colonization, and conducting oneself with a bit of damn dignity for once. Mentioned in the episode:The Yamas & Niyamas by Deborah Adele
Since having my boy the majority of my yoga practice has been introspective and I've focused on the limbs outside of asana in more depth. This week Saucha (cleanliness or purity) came front and centre in my mind and I got to pondering how I can embody it into my business to make my life easier and become more productive. Today's episode is all about the Niyama Saucha and how it may apply to your business. In this episode, my special guest Jenny Rhodes of Aligned Yoga and I discuss the spiritual aspects of a yoga practice and its importance and benefits. She shares the story of her personal awakening through yoga as well as tips and suggestions to help the listener establish their own sacred practice. *Correction: Jenny would like to correct the record, that when speaking about the fear around speaking her TRUTH (SATYA) she referred to it mistakenly as ASTEYA (non-stealing) which in retrospect is so telling, as her story refers to being the thief of her own joy & self-honesty . The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
The concluding note to readers that author, yoga and meditation instructor Deborah Adele shares in her book Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice includes the wish that they become more skilled participants in the living of their lives. And with the wisdom she shares in her book, she provides them with the tools to do just that. Having shared various insights here on the blog gained from her book, specifically in this post about the simple conscious everyday choice that leads to true fulfillment, and as we conclude the two month-long series of 'new year, new life' as you continued along the way to making the change you set to bring to be as the new year began, I wanted to explore two simple, yet powerfully crucial habits that will make the difference you seek inevitable. A skilled participant. In order to be 'skilled' we must know the skills that would be beneficial to acquire. And in order to embody being a participant in our lives, we must be engaged, we must act, we must take part. While we have covered multiple skills throughout this podcast, here on the blog and in TSLL's books (and will compile and detail them all in a linear approach to cultivating contentment in TSLL's upcoming Contentment Master Class video course), the two skills, I want to talk about today are simple to adopt and when we do, the quality of our life and everydays is amplified for the better: Choose to live instead of wait. In other words, Living vs. Waiting - choose the former. Choose to savor rather than to rush. In other words, Savoring vs. Rushing - again, choose the former. Let's dive into each of these in more detail . . . Check out the Show Notes for this epsiode on TSLL blog - https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast375

Love, today's episode is a fiery one. I'm currently going through my yoga teacher training program & a piece of this is reading The Yamas & Niyamas by Deborah Adele. I'm obsessed. There's a whole section on why being "nice" does not serve us, our relationships, or others... This is something I've explored deeply in my relationships. Releasing the sugar coating. Releasing the timid, avoidant communication. All in effort to move toward being more true to myself, more expessive & open in my communication, and more authenticity in my relationships. And it's freaking uncomfortable. There's risk that comes with being honest. There's risk that comes along with not striving to be the "nice, accommodating girl." However, there's also SO much risk that comes in being the nice girl and not being honest, expressing yourself, expressing your needs, and being real and open with people. Our minds tend to ignore this risk. So in today's episode, I'm sharing with you 3 reasons why being NICE is not the biz and should not be what we're striving for. I'll share with you what I've been practicing & striving for on my own journey of this as I burned my "nice girl masks." I hope you enjoy & that this supports you along your journey. All my love, Dev COACHING //

If you did not already see -I posted the next two coffee chats. The last two of the summer. The first one will be Aug 9th back at Kismet Coffee and then after that, it will be a Henleys Aug 21st. Henleys is graciously offering the space for me to come in a host the coffee chat- so it won't be dependent on the weather which Kismet is. For the next coffee chat, I recommend my last episode and interview with Jacqui Deflorio. I have also created a journal guide with key takeaways from the episode to help get you thinking about the episode so when you come to share you are all set! Hope to see you there. Meditation ( discern the inner voice ) know your own instincts and intuition. Which ultimately allows you to know what you like, and what your passions are and therefore guide you towards your purpose. I recently heard an interview with Light Watkins @lightwatkins. Light Watkins is an expert meditation and spiritual teacher who speaks of “following your curiosity” that whisper that may direct you in a way that is true to yourself. Internal nudges/hunches- we struggle to hear them because as we get older curiosity feels extracurricular to what's important, job, marriage, kids, etc. But that just may be the voice that guides us towards our passions and or purpose. The other voices are there too, and the only one that gets the loudest is the one you listen to the most and act on the most. How do we get to listen to the Inner Voice, we create opportunities for stillness. And we listen and we take the small hops and see how it goes as Light suggests. I also loved what Jacqui said about seeing your own path in front of you. If you can see the path it's not yours. Yours in the path right under your feet. So when you think of taking the next step -Instead of a leap of faith it's a hop of faith. Deborah Adele also compares this to trapeze artists when she explains the Yama of Aparigraha * non-possessiveness Like a trapeze artist you must let go of the first bar to be completely suspended in the air to then catch the hands of the next. You can't hold on to what you think you know. We want so desperately to know what the right steps are and how they will lead us to the happiness or fulfillment we seek but the reality is we can't know. We see this now. Especially with young adults. You said if I got good grades, went to a good school, got a great job- 2.5 kids and a dog I'd be happy. Why aren't I?!! Also explains why The Yale happiness class, formally known as Psyc 157: Psychology and the Good Life, is one of the most popular classes to be offered in the university's 320-year history. But if we listen and take a chance on curiosity, not focusing on the outcome not overanalyzing the situation simply letting it be, we don't know where it may take us. We can't be future goal-setters with yesterday's expectations. So the week we take this small practice into our days as suggested by Deborah Adele Practice with the breath. Practice the art of letting go with the breath. Be aware of the inhales and exhales. Breathing in life without the need to hold on to it. Journal how you feel after this practice, and maybe then— try something you are curious about. Until next time be well.

With this episode, we begin a new journey together. We will spend the next 5 weeks exploring the Ethics of Meditation.I find it profoundly poignant that the ethical foundation of meditation is always taught first in Eastern practices and yet is so often saved for 'later' in Western teachings. I confess that I usually assume the ethical teachings are inherent within the practice and have not explicitly taught them in a class setting. Until now. This is a mistake on my part, and one I look forward to rectifying immediately! My hope is that this will be an insightful series that prompts reflection and curiosity about how these ethical teachings play out in your own life. The very first ethical foundation is non-violence. I believe there is no more immediate crisis in our lives than the crisis of violence. It is one that requires our unwavering attention and intention. As author Deborah Adele writes, “Non-violence asks us to step lightly, do no harm, and honor the relationship we have with the earth, with each other, and with ourselves.”The teachings of non-violence might seem easily understood on the surface but the subtle implications only continue to deepen as your meditation practice progresses.Join me for today's episode of The Mindful Minute as we explore the tenet of non-violence and share in a 20-minute guided meditation.Sign up for my newsletter at http://eepurl.com/dBYEUL to receive free mini meditations each month, creative musings, and more.Make a donation or learn more about my free offerings and live classes by visiting merylarnett.com.IG: @merylarnett #meditatewithmeryl
Within the philosophy of yoga, we speak of Satya's ‘truthfulness'. Are you living truly the life you want? Are you being honest with yourself? ‘Living the life that cries to be lived from the depth of our being frees up our energy and vitality. We benefit and everyone around us benefits.' ~ Deborah Adele it starts within and knowing when we say ‘no' to set our boundaries and listen to this inner voice, not deny it but live in our own truth and non-violence. Self sabotage is simply the way/ways we go against our own self. I truly believe that overcoming it is always an on-going process where you have to choose and decide to not fall victim to it. This episode talks on what it is and practical ways to choose to win the war against ourself. 'All self-sabotage, lack of belief in ourselves, low self-esteem, judgments, criticisms, and demands for perfection are forms of self-abuse in which we destroy the very essence of our vitality." - Deborah Adele .… Do not forget to subscribe, drop your reviews, comments and share around. In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Ishvara Pranidhana + Surrender. We had to surrender to this episode because we had already recorded it 2 other times and each time technology kicked us in the booty! So, we talk about how life presents us many opportunities to surrender. Ishvara Pranidhana translates to surrendering to God. When we surrender, we find ease and get in the flow, making it easier for us to be present and to experience the Divine. Why don't we surrender more? Because it is NOT easy and this is why this is the last Niyama. It's a practice that's for sure and we are always working on surrendering to life. What about you? In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Svadhyaya + Self-Study. Welcome to the Sh!t Show ha! It was a wild conversation with lots of hiccups, but hey- we learned something about ourSelves right?! Svadhyaya is self study, the chance to look at the labels on our boxes of ourSelves and maybe unpack them. See what works for us and what no longer serves us. It's a journey to the gold and we are in it for the long run. Or are we running? It all depends on your perspective (and the day). So sit back and join us for this comical journey of ourSelves hehe! In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Tapas + Transformation. Tapas, literally meaning heat, and how the heat of the fire can create that transformation that we need. The catalyst for change and clarity. We talk about the importance of controlled burns and the beauty that comes afterwards. Sometimes we have to be patient (ewww), but that patience allows us to fully blossom. We also discuss ways in which we can center ourSelves so we can sit with Tapas and transform. Like the Rising Phoenix from the ashes. If you are interested in learning more about the Yamas + Niyamas, Deborah Adele's book has changed our lives. In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Santosha + Finding Contentment. How can we find contentment in our physical body, our mental mind, and our energetic Self or Spirit Self. We talk about living in a place of lack and how the opposite of that is truly contentment rather than abundance. Living in a place where we may be content in the emotional work of trying to get someone to meet us at our level, BUT what does that truly do, keep us out of true contentment because we are trying to change someone. How we tend to move towards the things we like, perhaps too often. When we do this we can forget about the things we dislike, which we may need, and in turn fall out of alignment with our true Self. Our goal in yoga, and in life, is to try and find that place of sattva- or neutral. As Ram Dass says the "ah so." "When it rains, I let it." If you are interested in learning more about the Yamas + Niyamas, Deborah Adele's book has changed our lives. In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Saucha + Purifying. In what ways do we weigh ourSelves down with things that really aren't for our highest good. We talk about how the lovely C taught us a lot about what was no longer serving us. We also talk about how important it is to purify our thoughts, mind, and spirit. In the West we get so caught up on the physical and outward appearance, but when we clean up the inside- it permeates to the outside. When we clear ourSelves of these things that don't serve us, we open up more space for healing, health, joy, peace, and overall love. THIS is what brings us closer to the Divine and that Divine lives right there within us all. If you are interested in learning more about the Yamas + Niyamas, Deborah Adele's book has changed our lives. In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Aparigraha (non-attachment) + Clinging. In what ways do we cling to thoughts, ideas, people, items, situations, money, youth, etc? We talk about it all! When we spend all of our energy clinging to something, we miss out on the other beautiful moments of life- we are constricting ourSelves rather than living in expansion. We don't know about you, but we would rather live in expansion. So join us on this journey of what we are attached to, how we notice it, work with it, and perhaps even shift it into creating space and freedom for ourSelves. If you are interested in learning more about the Yamas + Niyamas, Deborah Adele's book has changed our lives. In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Brahmacharya (non-excess) + Overdoing. Brahmacharya is defined as non-excess. It literally translates to "walking with God". We discuss many different ways we can live in excess physically, mentally, and energetically- and one of those is overdoing. We also talk about overeating, overspending, overworking out, and more. We also talk about how we have pulled it in and where we have seen where we have missed out on the little bliss moments of life- walking with God. Brahmacharya invites us to look inward and to try and find balance, sattva (neutral). And whewwww in this episode you will hear how it is an ON GOING practice in our own lives. If you are interested in learning more about the Yamas + Niyamas, Deborah Adele's book has changed our lives. In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Asteya (non-stealing) + Thievery. Asteya is defined as non-stealing. How many different ways can we steal from others, the Earth, and ourSelves? There's lots. We talk about stealing joy, happiness, anger, sadness, time, energy, ideas, words, concepts, and much more. We also talk about how not embodying what we are teaching is thievery as well as being inauthentic (see how it goes back to Satya- truthfulness and Ahimsa- being kind to ourSelves). If you are interested in learning more about the Yamas + Niyamas, Deborah Adele's book has changed our lives. In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Satya (Yama, of the 8 Limbs of Yoga) + Integrity- oooof! Satya is defined as truthfulness, truth. We talk about how to be truthful with others, ourselves, avoid "shoulding" on ourselves, how we can show up in truth yet still be kind, be real rather than nice, and how to walk in our own truth (integrity) when the going gets rough (practicing ahimsa with ourSelves) by integrating our truth into our reality. Today is the final episode for this month's discussion on "Ahimsa" or non-violence (see episode 50 for the full discussion of all three takeaways). The PURPOSE takeaway that we discuss today is: Regard yourself as whole - notice how much kindness you can experience. This month we have been discussing the first chapter of "The Yamas and Niyamas" by Deborah Adele. This book is available through a free audible trial here or wherever you buy hard copy books (you can find it on Amazon here). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/michelle48/message
Have you felt the glorification of "busy?" (Hand raised right here.) Over-scheduling ourselves and filling every minute is one way we experience tiny acts of violence. Today we are discussing how to guard your balance in everyday life, listening to the messages of our bodies. This is the BODY takeaway for the month as we discuss "Ahimsa" or Non-violence, the first chapter of "The Yamas and Niyamas" by Deborah Adele. Today we begin discussing the first chapter of "The Yamas and Niyamas" by Deborah Adele, all about non-violence. If you're like us, we had no idea this chapter would be so applicable in our daily lives...until we learned about the subtle forms of harm that show up all. the. time. (Who knew? We do it to ourselves.) This months takeaways are: MIND- Practice Courage: Do one thing each day you wouldn't normally do. BODY- Guard your Balance: Act on the messages of your body PURPOSE- Regard yourself as whole: Notice how much kindness you can experience. This month we are beginning to discuss portions of our fave yogi book "The Yamas and Niyamas" by Deborah Adele. NO NEED to be a yogi of any sort to reeeeeally benefit from and love what this book has to offer! In this episode, I share a reading from Deborah Adele's The Yamas and Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice. In Adele's book, she explores the yamas and niyamas as they apply to everyday life. This short reading is the introduction from her chapter on Satya (Truthfulness). The yamas and niymas lay the foundation for living a conscious life.
This is a 5 minute meditation on getting honest with a reading from the book, "The Yamas and Niyamas" by Deborah Adele.
It's been one year since April joined the podcast! Today's episode we talk about areas of growth that we have experienced, and how to be more intentional about living the life you want to live. Takeaways today are in the form of questions: MIND: How am I treating myself, and how does that reflect in how I treat others? “If you are a taskmaster with yourself, others will feel your whip. If you are critical of yourself, others will feel your high expectations of themselves as well. If you are light hearted and forgiving with yourself, others will feel the ease and joy of being with you. If you find laughter and delight in yourself, others will be healed in your presence.” Deborah Adele, Yamas and Niyamas p. 29-30 “We are mugs filled to the brim, and we keep getting bumped. If we are filled with coffee, coffee will spill out. If we are filled with tea, tea will spill out. Getting bumped is inevitable. If we want to change what spills out of us, we have to work to change what’s inside us.” - Glennon Doyle, Untamed BODY: What am I building in my life that is taking longer than I want it to? "Allow yourself to be both a masterpiece and work in progress." PURPOSE: What are you needing permission to pursue that would add to your life? I used to have a fear-based to-do list, and I didn't dare do anything outside of my designated duties and responsibilities for fear of judgement (which was really coming from myself). Learning to add space for creativity and things that nurture my soul was a life-changing shift that serves me and everyone around me. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/michelle48/message

Please join me for this final exploration of Saucha (purity) and let’s walk the path together of seeing how honest and pure we can be with ourselves.
