B2B SaaS Marketing Snacks
52 - Make your sales forecasts more predictable

B2B SaaS Marketing Snacks

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 27, 2024 25:47

Many sales forecasts are inaccurate. Let's make yours more predictable:1. Ground your projections in actual data instead of feelings. Many forecasts are based on opinion rather than actual data. If you've been in business for 3 or more months, you likely have access to data you can use. Let's say you had 20 demos and 2 closed-won deals in the past three months—with this information, you can start to build a picture of your conversion rates. Roughly 10% of your demos convert to closed-won deals. And you can use that number as a starting point to calculate pipeline stage probabilities and weighted pipeline metrics based on actual historical data.2. Maintain good deal stage hygiene.Data hygiene always suffers when changes are made to pipeline stage names, conversion rate assumptions, or entry/exit criteria. This typically happens when sales or marketing leadership changes. If a stage is added or removed, it can have many downstream effects on reporting and conversion rate assumptions. The best way to avoid this is by being thoughtful and deliberate when building your deal stages—and sticking to them. Here are some best practices for deal stage setup: Only keep the necessary stages. 3–7 stages should cover most B2B scenarios. Too many stages can make upkeep harder for your sales team.Don't allow for "parking lot" stages. Don't create stages that collect stalled deals. A typical example of this is “Discovery call no-show.” Instead of a unique deal stage, that should be converted to a property with a Yes/No value.Make stage entry/exit criteria discrete. Binary (yes/no) criteria should determine deal entry into each stage. For example, “Stage 1: Demo call scheduled” is clear, well-defined, and verifiable. A deal can only enter this stage if a prospect has a scheduled demo call calendar event with your sales rep. This is much more concrete than Stage 1: “Demoing,” which leaves room for ambiguity and subjective interpretation.Deals should only travel in one direction. Deals should never move backward in your funnel—you can't ‘un-present' a demo or proposal. Install rules to close out stalled deals (which inflate your pipeline), but never move deals backward.Percentage closure forecasts from stage to stage should be meaningful. For example, if a deal moves from Stage 1 to Stage 2, the change in the forecasted close rate should be significant—15% or more. If the forecast difference between two different stages is small (5%–10%), consider combining them into a single stage.Hold salespeople accountable for accurate data. What often seems like unimportant data entry has important implications for analyzing your marketing efforts, funnel dynamics, and ICP strategies.____Links shared in this episode:Stijn Hendrikse - A guide to sales strategy & performance management Stijn Hendrikse - How to coach B2B sales teamsMike Northfield - How to define an MQL for B2B SaaSTemplate - Define your marketing and sales lifecycle stagesT2D3 CMO MasterclassSubmit and vote on our podcast topics

In this episode of The Procuretech Podcast, host James Meads features Dominique Kindt, CEO and founder of consultancy With and Birdseye. Kindt developed a contract lifecycle management platform in response to the lack of effective solutions in the market. He believes that many companies focus too much on the pre-contract signing phase and neglect the post-signature phase, which is where 80% of contract lifecycle management occurs. Contract Lifecycle Management: A Deep Dive with Dominique Kindt, CEO and Founder of With and BirdsEye In this episode, the "holy triangle" concept for successful software implementation is discussed, emphasising a well-defined process, proper training, and optimal software utilisation. Merely purchasing licenses is insufficient; correct software usage within a clear process and training for employees are essential. A well-defined process involves configuration, installation, and adoption, preventing underutilisation of the software. Proper training ensures user awareness and maximises the benefits of the process and visibility tools. Optimal software use provides visibility and must be facilitated for effective process execution. Organisations should prioritise the holy triangle of process, software, and people rather than focusing solely on license acquisition. This holistic approach aims for visibility and effectiveness through process, software, and people alignment. Timestamps: [00:02:00] Introducing Dominique Kindt CEO of With and Birdseye. It's a brand that resonates with Katie and her personal values, whether that's celebration and fun, if it's empowerment, if it's wellness, but that it also stands on its own because at the end of the day, it is De Soi."— Scout Brisson 16:02Could Alcohol Disappear Forever?: "Our consumers have they've gone to almond milk and then to oat milk and then back. Aalyria just emerged from stealth mode, announcing an acquisition of a trove of connectivity technology from Google. The search juggernaut's parent company Alphabet has been developing high-altitude networking technology and apparently a space laser for years, if not decades. Aalyria is setting out to commercialize a lot of this technology, including much of the IP that ran in production with Alphabet's high-flying Loon connectivity balloons. The startup is promising the world, and then some, with two products to its name: Spacetime & Tightbeam. We bring Aalyria CTO Brian Barritt on the show this week to dig into the startup's vision. In this demo, I use my Zoom Podtrak P4 with the Audio Technica BPHS1 broadcasting head set which combines both a head set with an XLR boom microphone. I compare it to my current desktop mic/stand, the Samson 29 Q2U podcasting kit. Note - to use with the P4, I used a 6.3mm to 3.5mm female to male adapter to plug it in in to the head phone jack on the P4. The cable coming off the head set splits in to an XLR mic jack and the 6.3mm head phone jack. Certainly does the job, and great for portability, no need to carry around a XLR mic, stand, and head phones: just the head set plus the P4.

If you’ve ever connected with someone on LinkedIn or got a new follower on Twitter and then immediately got a direct message asking you to check out their product/service, set up a call, or any other pitch you’ve experienced a sales fail. [0:35] Todd’s Rant Too often modern salespeople utilize outdated tactics that fall flat in the age of inbound. Time wasting cold calls, unsolicited emails, and cold outreach of all kinds are holdovers from the 90s era of spam and like Smash Mouth’s All-Star, most people in 2018 would rather not. The worst part of pushy sales tactics is that they don’t just annoy people, they make your prospects loath you. Time wasting cold outreach where the salesperson has done zero research is less likely to land you in a spam folder and more likely to result in a prospect that will never work with you and is more than happy to tell anyone who will listen how awful you are. Cold calling is high-risk behavior. And your prospects can tell when you haven’t done your research beforehand and are doing your qualifying on the phone. If you don’t know who you’re talking to, what they do, what they need, and how to help them, then you’re not ready to pick up the phone. All of this isn’t to say that you can’t reach out to someone you don’t have a personal relationship with, but how you approach cold outreach and set the stage makes all the difference. If you know your prospect and can speak immediately to their problems may be, they’ll listen. For instance, don’t start talking about your product. No one cares! Everyone cares about their problems, and if you want to succeed you need to explain how you will address/help with their problems. If you know who they are, what they are doing, and you have connected with them in a personal way then it’s much more powerful and more likely they will be receptive to your outreach. The goal is to build trust. Doing your research, listening to your prospects, and respecting their time are key. If you can’t check off all three of those boxes, then you’re deploying an outdated tactic that is more likely than not going to fail. Your tactics should show that you respect your prospects, their time, and their needs. In short, your tactics need to be inbound.  [17:45] Dan’s Rant Dan’s top 3 sales fails: Talking not listening! Demoing, not discovering Calling everyone – The riches are in the niches. Don’t call everyone it’s a waste of time [20:29] Todd’s Truth Help early. Help often. Focus on your customers. “Inbound selling is a modern, buyer-centric form of sales where the seller prioritizes the buyer’s needs ahead of their own. Inbound salespeople focus on the buyer’s problem and context above all else. The inbound salesperson customizes their sales process and solution, should one exist. Smart leaders will take the time to learn about it, teach your sales reps how to become inbound sellers, and start using this method as a competitive advantage for your company in the age of the empowered buyer.” Brian Signorelli [21:15] 3 Takeaways It’s so important there is only one takeaway this week: Senior leaders need to shop themselves – experience your sales and marketing experience for the point of view of the customer Links Take the Inbound Organization Assessment (https://www.inboundorganization.com/inbound-organization-assessment) We’re extending the MSPOT contest!
