Over the past 10 months, we've explored each of the Yamas and Niyamas: the ten ethical practices that form the foundation of yoga philosophy. In doing so, we discovered that these ancient teachings have as much to say about modern life as they did thousands of years ago.In this episode, we're bringing it all together.Using Deborah Adele's The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice as our guide, we reflect on the wisdom woven through all ten practices and revisit the lessons that challenged, encouraged, and inspired us the most. While each principle offers a unique pathway to greater freedom and peace, the final niyama of surrender might be the most transformative. What does it mean to stop gripping so tightly to outcomes? How do we trust when life doesn't unfold according to our plans? And why is surrender not a sign of weakness, but perhaps the deepest expression of courage and faith?Whether you've followed this entire series or are joining us for the first time, this conversation offers a powerful reminder that the goal isn't perfection. It's awareness. Its presence. And sometimes, it's having the wisdom to loosen our grip and trust the process.Join us as we conclude our journey through the Yamas and Niyamas and explore how surrender may be the practice that changes everything.
Yoga is often portrayed as a series of poses performed on a mat, perhaps accompanied by incense, calming music, and the promise of becoming more flexible. But for millions of people around the world, yoga is far more than exercise. It's a philosophy, a spiritual practice, a community, a way of life, and a framework for navigating life's inevitable ups and downs. In this special episode of The Happier Life Project, Gabby Sanderson sits down in person with Zoe Taylor, founder of Ministry of Yoga in Lisbon, to look beyond the clichés and explore what yoga can really offer us. Tying into International Day of Yoga on 21 June and this year's theme of Yoga for Healthy Ageing, the conversation examines how yoga can help us not just live longer, but live well for longer; mentally, emotionally, and physically. Fresh from her own yoga teacher training with Zoe, Gabby brings a personal perspective to a discussion exploring yoga's philosophy and spiritual roots, the relevance of the Yamas and Niyamas – yoga's ethical guidelines – in modern life, the connection between yoga and mental wellbeing, and the importance of community, resilience, and finding calm in an increasingly chaotic world. Whether you're a devoted yogi, yoga-curious, sceptical of the stereotypes, or someone who's never stepped foot on a mat, this episode invites you to see yoga through a different lens - not as a performance of flexibility, but as a lifelong companion for wellbeing, helping us move through life with greater awareness, intention, and compassion. About Zoe Taylor: Originally from Tasmania, Australia, Zoe discovered yoga in 2010 and has since completed more than 700 hours of teacher training across Europe and Asia. She founded Ministry of Yoga in Lisbon in 2016 and has led over 5,000 classes, retreats, and workshops, blending movement, philosophy, and meditation to support wellbeing both on and off the mat. Yoga is an inquiry into the nature of the mind, body, and consciousness. It provides a ritual that fosters belonging, meaning, and purpose, creating a sense of community and support. Through asana, yoga helps focus the mind on the breath, entering a state of stillness and awareness. A balanced practice is grounded in ethics and personal discipline, guided by the 8 Limbs of Yoga, particularly the Yamas (ethical guidelines) and Niyamas (observances). Key principles include non-violence (Ahimsa), truthfulness (Satya), and self-study (Svadhyaya).Asana practice emphasises steadiness (Sthira) and ease (Sukham), with focus on breath, sensation, and internal light (prana). This leads to overcoming duality and attaining a state of yoga. Obstacles such as dullness and self-doubt arise, but cultivating awareness, friendliness, joy, and compassion can help overcome them. Using tools like R.A.I.N. (Recognise, Allow, Investigate, Nurture), we learn to self-regulate and move toward lasting fulfilment and freedom from suffering. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. What if the most important thing in your life is the one you can't see? This milestone episode introduces two ancient Balinese concepts that are now the beating heart of the studio itself — Sekala (the seen) and Niskala (the unseen). Through an unscripted, thoughtful conversation, the episode explores what runs our lives beneath the surface: thoughts, intuition, gut feelings, spiritual energy, and the invisible forces shaping every decision we make. From ignoring your gut to the discomfort of saying yes when you mean no, from the breath inside a yoga pose to the love inside a home-cooked meal — the seen and the unseen are always working together. The Balinese don't treat one as more real than the other. Most of the modern world does. This episode is an invitation to tend to both — and to ask yourself honestly which one you've been neglecting.----------Episode Chapters:00:00:29 Introduction00:01:31 What's Invisible in Your Life Right Now?00:02:41 Thoughts, Feelings, and the Ethereal Plane00:04:31 How Much Energy Do You Spend on How You Look vs. How You Feel?00:07:00 When Did You Ignore Your Gut — and What Did It Cost?00:13:45 Saying Yes When You Mean No — Intuition and Boundaries00:18:43 Revealing the Topic: Sekala and Niskala Explained00:20:00 Balinese Culture and Why It Draws People to Bali00:22:11 The Two Studio Shalas — Niskala Upstairs, Sekala Downstairs00:23:44 How Much Do You Tend the Seen vs. the Unseen?00:25:08 The Unseen in Yoga Poses, Mastery, and Creativity00:31:34 The Unseen in Other People — Compassion and Empathy00:33:03 When Someone Called Self-Reflection a Waste of Time00:34:36 What Western Society Gets Wrong — and What Bali Gets Right----------Mentions & Resources:Michael Henri's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelyoga.pt/Byron de Marsé's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/byronyoga/The IN Movement Instagram: https://www.instagram/com/the_in_movement/Balinese concepts explored:Sekala — the seen, physical, tangible worldNiskala — the unseen, spiritual, energetic realmYoga concepts referenced:Prana Vayus (winds of energy within the body)Yamas and Niyamas (ethical guidelines, not rules)Frameworks mentioned:Human Design — sacral authority and splenic authorityManifestation (101 level overview)Cultural references:Andrew Tate — referenced briefly as an example of extreme seen-world thinkingThe Beatles — referenced as an example of unseen creative masteryStudio context:Niskala Shala — upstairs daily practice roomSekala Shala — downstairs training/learning spaceStudio naming informed by Kimberly (half-Balinese teacher)----------Tags: Sekala, Niskala, Balinese culture, seen and unseen, intuition, yoga philosophy, spirituality, mindfulness, self-reflection, inner world, human design, manifestation, prana, yoga studio, Bali, grounding, consciousness, empathy, compassion, personal growth, inner work, yoga, energy, milestone episode
If you've been feeling overwhelmed or stuck trying to control everything, this episode invites you into a different way of living: one rooted in surrender, self-awareness, and faith. After a year of exploring the Yamas and Niyamas, we've arrived at the final practice: Ishvara Pranidhana (surrender). But what does it really mean to let go of control and trust God, especially in real, everyday life?In this episode of The Problem with Perfect, we explore: How to stop trying to control everything What it looks like to let go and let God How to manage triggers and emotional reactions Why spiritual growth and healing require surrender Together, we discuss how surrender isn't passive. Instead, it's choosing to fully engage in your life while releasing the outcome and learning to trust God in uncertainty. If you've ever wondered how to let go of control, grow in your faith, or find peace in the unknown, this conversation will meet you right where you are. Because maybe peace isn't found in control, maybe it's found in surrender.Show Notes: The Yamas and Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice by Deborah AdeleMan's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
Join me this week for a short, guided meditation on the first three Yamas.
Send us Fan MailThis episode is one I've been sitting with for a while — a synthesis of two things that have shaped my whole path: Ayurveda and yoga philosophy. In this episode, I bring those two threads together and look at the yamas and niyamas — yoga's ethical and personal observances — through the lens of kapha season. What we cover:Kapha dosha is made up of earth and water. It's heavy, slow, stable, cool, and moist — and late winter into spring is kapha season. When kapha goes out of balance, we might notice lethargy, mental fog, resistance to change, a tendency to oversleep or overeat, or that feeling of comfortable-but-stuck stagnation. The medicine for kapha is warmth, stimulation, movement, and letting go — and the yamas and niyamas offer a beautiful map for exactly that.I give a brief grounding in the eight limbs of yoga and what the yamas and niyamas actually are — not as a rulebook, but as living, breathing invitations to notice and redirect with curiosity rather than criticism. Then we explore six practices through the lens of kapha season:The Yamas — how we relate to the world:Aparigraha (non-grasping) — where are you clinging, and what wants to be released as spring arrives?Satya (truthfulness) — using honest, clear seeing to notice where we've gotten comfortable in stagnation — without judgmentBrahmacharya (right use of energy) — not about deprivation, but about noticing where energy is leaking and asking: is this giving me life or pulling me deeper into heaviness? The Niyamas — how we relate to ourselves:Tapas (inner fire) — the gentle, consistent showing up; kindling the fire rather than forcing itSaucha (purity/cleanliness) — clearing physical clutter, mental tabs, and anything that's accumulating and pulling on your energySvadhyaya (self-study) — observing your own kapha patterns without judgment and seeking what genuinely inspires youI also talk about my own evolving relationship with tapas — how it looked very different in my pitta-dominant twenties than it does now in midlife, and why the middle path is the one I keep returning to.My invitation for you this week: pick one of these six practices, sit with the questions it offers, and let it be a gentle lens for seeing your life more clearly — without judgment, without pressure, just with curiosity.Free download: Grab the one-page guide to all six practices — with reflection questions for each — in the link below. In this episode, we dive deep into the concept of Satya, or truthfulness, again. Join me for a few minutes to explore the delicate balance between the need to belong and the need to grow, which is another of Deborah Adele's insights from The Yamas and Niyamas. In this episode, I talk about the difficulty of living authentically, the psychological research on belonging, and how we often sabotage our own truth to fit in. Drawing on wisdom from various traditions—including yoga, Buddhism, and modern therapy—let's discuss practical strategies to connect with our true selves without sacrificing our relationships.
Rev. Dr. Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati continues his series of discourses on the Principles of Bhakti Yoga, followed by arati and kirtan. Swamiji expands on the pillars of dharma discussed in last week's class, and expands on tapasya (austerity/self-discipline); the Yamas & Niyamas; austerities of the body, speech, and mind; and truthfulness.
Wendy and I keep an eye on current events through the lens of the Yoga Sutras. Using the Four Keys, sutra 1.33 and the Yamas and Niyamas from the second pada/chapter, we talk about the opportunity for practice vs. the inclination to judge others for their shortcomings and bad actions. What if contentment isn't something we chase, but something we practice? In this episode, Robin and Denise continue their journey through the Yamas and Niyamas, arriving at the second Niyama: Santosha, which is the practice of deep, inner contentment. Together, they explore what it means to find peace in the present moment, regardless of external circumstances, and why our constant striving for “what's next” may be keeping us from fully living now.Through personal stories, practical reflections, breathwork, gratitude, and both biblical and scientific insight, this conversation invites you to pause, let joy linger, and consider the paradox of non-seeking. If you're tired of waiting for life to finally feel good, or realizing you might be wishing it away, this episode offers a gentle, grounding reminder: contentment begins within.Show Notes:The Yamas and Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice by Deborah Adele

Six months into our journey through the Yamas and Niyamas, we pause to reflect on what it really means to let go. Not just of our stuff, but of expectations, busyness, self-judgment, and the heaviness we carry inside. In this episode, we finish our exploration of Aparigraha (nonpossessiveness) and begin our inward turn into the Niyamas, starting with Saucha, the practice of purity. But purity here isn't about perfection, appearances, or having it all together. It's about lightening our load, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, so we can meet each moment with clarity, compassion, and presence.Join us as we talk about what it might look like to stop “planning ourselves” and instead love ourselves as we are. This is an invitation to slow down, to be present, and to become a safer place for ourselves and for others. If you're feeling weighed down, scattered, or quietly exhausted by trying to do it all right, this conversation offers a gentler way forward - one rooted in presence, peace, and learning to let joy linger.Show Notes:The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice by Deborah Adele

Sasha and Erin offer a little comic relief from the seriousness of the Yamas and Niyamas series. Ironically, the Niyamas this week are Tapas, or discipline, as well as Santosha, or contentment. I am taking another pause to talk about Deborah Adele's The Yamas and Niyamas. My purpose is two-fold: 1. It is a book with concepts I am really trying to incorporate into my life, and this is a helpful way for me to accomplish that; 2. I need another week to do some more research on the Fourth Face of Mara.I highly recommend this book. It is simple, short, and easy to read. However, it is packed with deeply important topics that should resonate with everyone.

I am taking a break from the Four Faces of Mara. Enjoy this short podcast about nonviolence and courage. The foundational principle of Ahimsa (do no harm) from The Yamas and Niyamas is a wonderful foundation for building a resilient, satisfying life.
Welcome to the Spiritually Fit Yoga podcast with Amelia Andaleon! In episode three of my 30-day December mini meditations, we explore Aparigraha, a Sanskrit word meaning "non-possessiveness," "non-attachment," or "non-greed," and is the fifth of the five Yamas (ethical restraints) in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. It involves taking only what you need, letting go of excessive material possessions, and releasing emotional attachments to things, outcomes, and the past. Aparigraha asks us: What are you gripping tightly? What are you trying to control? Who are you having a hard time emotionally letting go of? Are you attached to any outcomes, results or expectations?--------------------------I'd love to hear what you are experiencing practicing these mini meditation episodes. Our fifth and final Yama jewel, Aparigraha, encourages us to embrace non-possessiveness. What do you covet? What do you cling to? Consider what in your life reflects your values and priorities. This month's Yama invites us to examine the physical possessions we surround ourselves with. Do these items make you feel free and light, or do they weigh you down and create a sense of heaviness?Aparigraha serves as a reminder that breathwork is a perfect example of non-possessiveness. The simple act of inhaling and exhaling teaches us about embracing the fullness of life without the need to cling to it. Instead of holding onto our breath, we allow it to flow, experiencing release and relaxation. This time of year often brings many obligations and expectations. Aparigraha urges us to be gentle with ourselves and with others. When we extend unconditional love, we model non-possessiveness and promote acceptance and forgiveness. What a beautiful way to end the year!Show Notes:The Yamas and Niyamas: Exploring The Ethical Practice of Yoga by Deborah Adele

I am taking a break from the deep dive into the internet, the Shimmer, and deep work to briefly talk about an idea from a book I am reading - for the second time in the last couple of months. Ahimsa, or nonviolence, has within its precepts the idea of feeling powerless in our lives. Often, this feeling of powerlessness translates to violence against oneself and violence against others. Listen to this week's podcast to find out more. The Yamas and Niyamas: Exploring Yogas Ethical Practice

“So when you experience that peace, it's because it's your nature. Your real nature is peaceful. It is blissful. It is contented.”Wow, this is an incredible episode from early in September, recorded for the Good Company livestream series with my brilliant friend Katharine from Unchanging Being. She is a longtime meditator and a deeply wise teacher. We talked about the Gita, the Gunas, retraining the mind, meditation, and satsang (and more). This is a conversation that bridges ancient wisdom with modern life. A classic, inspiring and educational talk that everyone will take something from, especially if you have a mind that tends to disturb you - like me!Our dialogue explores the interplay of the essence of true freedom and the vital role of meditation in discovering the unchanging Self.Through personal anecdotes and insights, Katharine illuminates the path of self-discovery and the eternal quest to understand one's true nature. Here are a few of the profound takeaways (there are many):➖ Satsang and good company support genuine spiritual growth ➖ The Bhagavad Gita is a living scripture, fully relevant today ➖ Freedom from the mind is the true aim of meditation ➖ The Gunas are constantly shaping our thoughts and actions ➖ Witness consciousness unlocks a deeper understanding of the Self ➖ Meditation reveals the unchanging nature of Being ➖ Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, enriched through teachings and experienceFind Katharine: unchangingbeing.com Subscribe to Unchanging Being on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@unchangingbeingKatharine's current Bhagavad Gita cohort has already begun, although she offers other in-depth courses on the Upanishads, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the Yamas and Niyamas, regular satsang, a brilliant newsletter, and her new YouTube channel, which features teachings and meditations.I loved spending time with my wise satsang friend and sharing this livestream episode with the Patreon community. I look forward to hearing what you take away from it.In oneness,BobbiThanks for listening!
Have you ever been accused of stealing? Probably not. Yet, most of us engage in various forms of stealing every day, often without realizing it. There are many ways in which we take from others, the Earth, future generations, and even ourselves. The third Yama, Asteya, encourages us to become aware of how our words and actions may rob others of their time, joy, or sense of self-worth. It reminds us that the Earth deserves our attention and appreciation now so that future generations can also experience its wonders. Lastly, we are prompted to consider how we steal from ourselves. We often forget that “comparison is the thief of joy,” yet we regularly diminish our own happiness by comparing or criticizing ourselves. As Oprah wisely said, “When we know better, we do better.” This embodies the essence of Asteya.Show notes:The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice by Deborah Adele

In this episode, we continue their journey through the Yamas and Niyamas, diving into the second jewel: Satya, or truthfulness.Join us as we reflect on what we've learned so far about courage, balance, boundaries, and self-love—and how those lessons prepare us to live authentically in truth. Together, we wrestle with what it means to be real instead of just nice, how to express ourselves without slipping into self-indulgence, and why truth has both a fierce weight and a freeing power. From the challenge of setting healthy boundaries to the courage of self-expression, this conversation encourages us to ask if ourselves some tough questions. Join us as we explore Satya together and discover how living truthfully can bring both freedom and deeper connection.Show Notes:Discussion based on The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice by Deborah AdeleThis month, if you'd like to join us, we will dig deeper into Satya each week.Week 1: Observe the differences between times when you are "nice" versus "real." What were the circumstances? How did they make you feel and what were the results?Week 2: Focus on self-expression by expressing your hopes and dreams into the external world. Act on life-giving opportunities.Week 3: Slow it down this week and "do it right the first time" so that there are no apologies or do overs needed.Week 4: Look at ideas and beliefs that once served you but no longer do. Are you holding onto any of these beliefs that you need to release? Free yourself of them and watch how it energizes your quest for authentic realness. Closing Meditation:“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”― Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles"
In this deeply reflective solo episode, host Harmony Slater addresses a heated debate currently circling the global Ashtanga yoga community: certifications and their legitimacy. Drawing from her own decades of practice and personal memories of studying with Sharath Jois, Harmony offers her perspective on what certification really means — and what it doesn't. She invites us to step back from the noise of division and instead consider the larger crises happening across our world: climate disasters, hunger, war, and the erosion of human connection. With tenderness, honesty, and wisdom, Harmony explores grief, impermanence, and the essence of yoga as union—not fracture. Through stories, reflections, and quotes from Sharath, she reminds us that yoga is not a piece of paper, nor is it found in hierarchy, but in how we live, love, and treat one another. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why certification has never truly defined a yoga teacher How grief and loss are showing up in the yoga community The role of impermanence in practice and in life Stories and teachings from Sharath Jois that reveal his heart The importance of Yamas and Niyamas—especially Ahimsa—in today's world How division distracts us from the crises that actually need our energy A call to action: turning practice into presence, compassion, and service Check out Harmony's upcoming events: https://harmonyslater.com/events FREE Manifestation Activation: https://harmonyslater.kit.com/manifestation-activation FIND Harmony: https://harmonyslater.com/ JOIN the Finding Harmony Community: https://community-harmonyslater.com/ FOLLOW Harmony on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/harmonyslaterofficial/ FOLLOW the Finding Harmony Podcast on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/findingharmonypodcast/ FREE AUDIO GUIDE - Download your 2 min breathwork practice: https://harmonyslater.com/morning-breathwork-optin JOIN ANCIENT BREATHING 2.0 and Live Classes with Harmony: https://harmonyslater.com/ancient-breathing-2-0 Find your Spiritual Entrepreneur Archetype! We often think about a yoga practice as being about physical movement. Many of us know about child's pose, downward facing dog, and tadasana. However, it may surprise you to know that the basis for all yoga practices is found in the elements of Yamas and Niyamas. The elements of Yamas and Niyamas teach a practical, step-by-step methodology that brings understanding to our life experiences, while at the same time pointing the way to the next experience. They are like a detailed map, telling you where you are and how to look for the next landmark. They facilitate taking ownership of your life and directing it towards the fulfillment that you seek. The five Yamas guidelines, or jewels, are about restraint. We are encouraged to practice non-violence, truthfulness, nonstealing, nonexcess, and nonresponsiveness. These 5 Niyamas, or observances, encourage purity, contentment, self- discipline, self-study, and surrender. These yoga guidelines do not limit us from living life, but rather they begin to open life up to us more and more fully, and they flow easily into one another in ways that are practical and easy to grasp. Brahmacharya is one of the Yamas, ethical guidelines in Yoga philosophy. This includes managing your energy in terms of speech, consumption, activity, and thoughts. The goal is to avoid excess and depletion, fostering a balanced and intentional way of living. Brahmacharya is about self-mastery, not suppression. Be guided using an affirmation to experience inner wholeness. THIS WEEK'S THEME: "The Art of Enough: Finding Peace in Moderation" This 7-day meditation series explores the Yama of Brahmacharya, traditionally interpreted as continence, but more broadly understood as moderation and the responsible use of energy. This series aims to help you cultivate balance in all aspects of your life—physical, mental, and emotional. Each day builds upon the previous one, guiding you to integrate Brahmacharya into your daily experiences. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian and culture editor Jessica Steinberg join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Fabian was in the Gaza Strip last week at the Morag Corridor. He compares this trip to previous IDF embeds and describes what he saw. We learn about the very intense fighting in the Strip and hear about the incidents in which three servicemen recently lost their lives: Master Sgt. (res.) Asaf Cafri, Cpt. Ido Voloch and Sgt. Neta Yitzhak Kahane, of the Border Police’s Yamas covert unit. For only the third time since a ceasefire in Lebanon went into effect in November 2024, the IDF carried out an attack in the Beirut area. We learn what the IDF was targeting and what this means for the ceasefire. Some 12,000 people led by Holocaust survivors and an Israeli delegation of released hostages, hostages’ family members, and bereaved families marched Thursday from Auschwitz to the Birkenau camp for the 2025 March of the Living, with the horrors of the murder of six million Jews mingling with the plight of the captives in Gaza. Steinberg was on the ground with them and reports back. To end the program, we hear about a rally staged Sunday night by the families of the “Beautiful 6,” six hostages murdered by Hamas terrorists in Gaza at the end of August last year. The six hostages killed by their captors in Gaza were Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Almog Sarusi, Or Danino and Alex Lubanov. We hear about an evening of song, prayer and calls for unity. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog for more updates.
