We have more podcasts for your ear holes this week. Liz decided she needs to get more comfy with managing her cash, so she's recommending She's On The Money. Nick gets his comic book nerd on with Marvel's foray into the podcast universe, Wolverine. And Zane takes a look at all the times people buggered things up in the past with The Constant: A History of Getting Things Wrong. Then it's review time, featuring our recommendations from last week.Liz Recommends - She’s on the Moneyhttps://www.shesonthemoney.com.au/Note there are two She’s on the Money podcasts, we are talking about the Australian podcast featuring Victoria Devine, financial advisor and co-host Georgia King. They have an AMAZING FB community which is great to join for advice and group consensus. They usually reference the group on the pod to chat about their money wins and tips for saving etc.“We empower women to make smart money decisions.Millennial women are smart, savvy and independent. We grew up listening to Destiny’s Child, so it’s only natural, right? Yet, when it comes to money stuff, we can feel overwhelmed, unsure where to invest or stuck in a relentless cycle of “money in and money out”, never making ground or reaching our goals. She’s on the Money is here to help solve those problems. We believe that being good with money doesn’t mean you have to hibernate and live on a diet of two minute noodles and cheap wine. We believe you can have it all; the house deposit, the Pilates membership, the share portfolio, the Santorini trip and, of course, the brunch dates. We’re here to change your relationship with money through relatable finance and money hacks you can implement today.”For both: whatever topic takes your fancy.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/shes-on-the-money/id1468033698Nick Recommends - Marvel's WolverineINJECT that adamantium into your veins! They soon find there’s more going on than meets the eyeFor both: From the starthttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/marvels-wolverine/id1343499710Zane Recommends - The Constant: A History of Getting Things Wronghttps://www.constantpodcast.com/Back to the status quo for Zane this week as he recommends and SCIENCE & HISTORY podcast. The Constant is a science and history podcast about getting things wrong. From ancient science to contemporary blunders, we take you on journeys of misadventure and misapprehension, filling your brain with juicy nuggets of the sometimes comical, sometimes tragical and always fascinating ways people mess things up.Each season of The Constant runs 8 episodes, released weekly on Tuesdays.Episodes vary in length, with the shortest running 10 minutes and the longest nearly 1 hour, but on average most stories tend to range between 20-25 minutes. The Constant is currently on hiatus, with plans to return for a special abbreviated kickstarter season in October. For Both: Pick one that appealshttps://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-constant/id1321926387?mt=2Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.Become a Patron of That’s Not Canon Productions at Patreon!
Castology acknowledges the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first inhabitants of the nation and the traditional custodians of the lands where we live, learn, and work.In light of the growing movement around the world against racism and bigotry we Castologists wanted to do what we can to raise the profile of some great titles, made by, for, and about people of colour in Australia and around the world. We welcome any further input of titles we should be listening to and hope you can enjoy the eight great podcasts we recommend in the (no-so) mini-sode!Now is the time to make your voice heard! Each week host Laci Mosley (aka Scam Goddess) keeps listeners up to date on current rackets, digs deep into the latest scams, and breaks down historic hoodwinks alongside some of your favorite comedians! True fun crime!https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/scam-goddess/id1479455008Pretty for an AboriginalActor Miranda Tapsell (Love Child, The Sapphires) and writer/actor Nakkiah Lui (Black Comedy, Kiki and Kitty) join forces to present Pretty for an Aboriginal, a BuzzFeed Australia podcast featuring wide-ranging conversation and critique of society, politics and culture.Drawing on Australian and international guests – season one includes writer and commentator Roxane Gay, rapper, comedian and writer Briggs and Orange is the New Black’s Yael Stone – Miranda and Nakkiah discuss topics such as relationships, the importance of representation and how to be a good ally, all while challenging perceptions of Indigenous Australia and the nature of success. The conversation is friendly and sharp, and you’ll hear much-needed perspectives at the intersection of politics and culture. Frontier War Stories - a podcast dedicated to truth-telling about a side of Australian that has been left out of the history books. Each episode Boe will speak with different Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people about research, books and oral histories which document the first 140 years of conflict and resistance. These times are the Frontier Wars and these are our War Stories.https://boespearim.podbean.com/Sibling RivalryMonét X Change and Bob the Drag Queen discuss literally everything. Bob, winner of season 8 of RuPaul's Drag Race & Monét, winner of Miss Congeniality on Season 10 and winner of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 4 are not actually related to each other but you'd never know when you hear their hilarious sister-like banter on Sibling Rivalry Podcast.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sibling-rivalry/id1359664915?mt=2Zane Recommends -People's History of Australia, http://www.peopleshistory.com.au/Christian is a librarian and a union delegate and Tim is an academic. So much of the history that we’re taught focuses on the deeds of the great and powerful. We want to turn this upside down, and look at Australian history from the perspective of workers striking for their rights, Aboriginal people campaigning for justice and self-determination, the unemployed uniting to demand housing and food, people of colour, women and LGBTQ people struggling for liberation, and ordinary people across Australia, in all their diversity, fighting together for something better. These moments show us that our history is more than just a small group of politicians and powerful people making all the decisions. They show us that time and time again, working people across Australia have stood up and made history themselves.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/peoples-history-of-australia/id1499241310Black Magic Woman, https://open.spotify.com/show/5h2qtieWI35T0H2ZkkeSDLHosted by Mundanara Bayles who was born and raised in Redfern (Sydney) Australia and currently lives in Queensland. Ooh boy do we have a show for you today. Zane gets into the big issues this week and we mean big... free speech and how it’s in massive anyone? His recommendation is Clear and Present Danger. Liz has found an immersive podcast the thinks could be even better than 2019’s beloved Carrier: The Left Right Game. And Nick finally delves into the listener submission pile with Chronosphere Fiction. Then it’s REVIEW TIME!Liz Recommends - The Left Right Gamehttps://www.qcodemedia.com/theleftrightgameOriginally written on a Reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/7asz8x/has_anyone_heard_of_the_leftright_game_part_1/), The Left Right Game is Liz’s new obsession. AND it’s about to be made into a TV series (https://www.slashfilm.com/the-left-right-game/) on Amazon.“Tessa Thompson stars as an idealistic young journalist trying to make a name for herself by following a group of paranormal explorers, obsessed with a seemingly harmless pastime known as the Left/Right Game. The journey takes her into a supernatural world that she and the other members of the expedition can neither handle nor survive.”Starring and co-produced by Tessa Thompson.Written and created by Jack Anderson.Directed by Emma Tammi.Presented by Sonos, QCode Media.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-left-right-game/id1498806952For both: Make sure you listen with headphones OR in a car if you’re a careful driver, especially for episode two.Nick Recommends - Chronosphere FictionChronosphere Fiction is a story telling anthology podcast where writers’ creations come to life with sound effects and music.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/chronosphere-fiction/id1294436798Zane Recommends - Clear and Present Dangerhttp://www.freespeechhistory.com/From 1989 and until the early noughties free speech went viral across the globe as new democracies tore down the walls of censorship. But for more than a decade the global respect for free speech has been in decline. In 2003 41% of the world’s countries had a free press. In 2017 that figure had dropped to 31%. Or put differently: Only 13% of the world’s 7,4 billion people enjoy free speech. 45% live in countries where censorship is the norm. Still, more than half the world’s population across cultures and continents think free speech is very important. But why is that? Where does the principle of free speech come from? How has it been developed over time? Why have kings, emperors, and governments killed and imprisoned people to shut them up? And why have countless people risked death and imprisonment to express their beliefs? And what can people in the digital age learn from past conflicts over where to draw the line? Jacob Mchangama guides you through the history of free speech from the trial of Socrates to the Great Firewall.Jacob Mchangama is the founder and executive director of Justitia a think tank focusing on human rights and a Visiting Scholar at Columbia’s Global Freedom of Expression Center. He has commented extensively on free speech and human rights in outlets including the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy. It's podcast time, your favourite time of the week. Zane is still hungry for podsnacks so he recommends 60-Second Science (Space/Mind/Tech/Earth/Health). Liz dives into the listener recommendation pile to solve the worlds trivial problems with What Shall We Do About...? and Nick shows his love for music and sound engineering with Song Exploder. Then, it's on to the reviews from last week. Whose podsnack will reign supreme?Liz Recommends - What Shall We Do About?"The world is full of problems, though most of them don't make the headlines. Sam Robinson sits down with some prominent personalities to try to improve and perhaps even solve some of the world's less pressing issues. Nothing too trivial will be left unturned."Host Sam Robinson sits down with Aussie personalities like Marc Fennel, Ash London and Dan Illic to discuss how to solve the world's issues that are smaller than, say, a fucking pandemic.Like What shall we do about kindness? Which is all about how to find the good in among all this shit. Or what shall we do about children's television, where Sam chat's to kids TV royalty James Sherry about what will happen with aussie kids TV quotas being reduced. True crime lovers of the world unite, it's CRIME TIME on Castology this week. It's conmen, liars, and shysters with Zane's recommendation Pretend Radio. Liz took a break from murder (listening to it, not doing it) to recommend The Score: The Bank Robber Diaries. And then Nick does a deep dive into some pretty sobering systemic breakdowns with Dig. Then, it's review time for last week's recommendations.Liz Recommends - The Score: The Bank Robber Diarieshttps://play.acast.com/s/thescore"14 months. 30 Banks. An all-access pass into the mind of one of Southern California’s most prolific bank robbers. On the show, Joe Loya - the so-called “Beirut Bandit” - reveals his story of transformation from abusive childhood to prolific bank robber, violent convict, ex-con, writer and ultimately, a reconciled son.Produced by Peabody-Award winning podcaster Ben Adair (The Sterling Affairs, Dr. Death, Reveal) at Western Sound in partnership with Acast Studios."This podcast runs through the life cycle of a bank robber, from how he got into robbing banks, how it escalated, how he got caught, how he fared in prison… has he really reformed? For both: Start at the very beginning.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-score-bank-robber-diaries/id1483260185Nick Recommends - DigA woman told Louisville police she was raped in January 2018. She expected them to quickly try to arrest the suspect. But an officer on the scene that night didn't seem to believe her. The detectives weren't convinced that a crime occurred. And a prosecutor rejected the case well before an arrest was even under consideration. In the first season of Dig, a new podcast from the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, we bring you the results of a yearlong look at how rape cases are investigated in Louisville. What we've learned: here, the police defer to prosecutors on rape cases — and prosecutors reject the vast majority of cases presented to them. Due to this unusual relationship, most people accused of rape here will never face consequences. Most won't be arrested or convicted. And the case will be closed anyway. For both: From the start!https://www.npr.org/podcasts/782223781/digZane Recommends - Pretend Radiohttp://pretendradio.org/No blood and gore here! This week Zane has a secret... well, many secret in fact. His recommendation is The Secret Room and looks at the stories no one ever tells. Nick takes a look at the media taking a look at politics through a comedic lens with The Press Box. And then Liz brings a podcast not because she loves it but because she's not sure. Does she actually like Monster Presents: Insomniac or does she just really want to like it?Liz Recommends - Monster Presents: Insomniac (or does she?)https://insomniacpodcast.com/For the first time ever, Liz is bringing a podcast she isn't actually sure if she likes or not. I mean, she wants to like it because it's an interesting twist on the true crime podcast but... she just isn't sure. GROUP CONSENSUS TIME!“This podcast began with a simple, scary premise: to research the disturbing and horrific routines of lesser known serial killers. Host Scott Benjamin wanted to learn more about what made them tick, and why they did these terrible things. But, slowly, Benjamin’s research started to affect him, consuming him day and night. It followed him home at night and into his bed. The work turned him into an insomniac.”See, Liz’s instinct would be to, um, STOP RESEARCHING KILLERS if her sleep was affected. But no, Scott has decided he needs to work through it to be able to put it to bed, so to speak. Is he actually becoming derranged himself? Listen to find out.For both: Pick any one except the Genosee River Killer because goddamn that's a hard listen.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/monster-presents-insomniac/id1454411295Nick Recommends - The Press BoxThe Ringer’s Bryan Curtis and David Shoemaker catch you up on the biggest media stories, from sports to politics and everything in between. For either: Take ya pick!https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-press-box/id1058911614Zane Recommends - The Secret Roomhttp://www.thesecretroompodcast.com/What’s the one thing you’ve never told anybody? Ben Hamm explores the stories no one ever tells in The Secret Room. This is an interview podcast where the host, Ben Hamm, talks to people from all over the world about the secrets they have kept hidden away. For Nick: Nindaddy's SecretFor Liz: Revengehttps://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-secret-room-true-stories/id1082252585?mt=2Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.
Remember when Nick recommended the super-niche podcast Containers? You know, the one about containers of the shipping variety? Well Liz decided it was time for a niche podcast war and here we are with The Podcast For Laundry. Zane has a rather theatrical listener submission with The Irrationally Exuberant, and Nick goes to Hollywood with Scriptnotes. Then it's time to let you all know what we thought of last week's recommendations.Liz Recommends - The Podcast For Laundry with Brett Davishttps://foreverdogpodcasts.com/podcasts/the-podcast-for-laundry/When Nick decided to bring the super-niche podcast Containers (about, you guessed it, fucking shipping containers), Liz knew she had to out-niche him as payback. And here we are with The Podcast For Laundry.“When we brought comedian and laundry enthusiast Brett Davis to “talk suds with his buds” on our network, we could never have expected the seemingly affable host and innocuous topic (laundry) to result in this. Regrettably, we are contractually obligated to present The Podcast For Laundry, and apologize to the many guests dragged into Brett’s endless downward spiral. Listener discretion is advised.”In every episode, Mr. Davis, or an obnoxious, inept version of himself, talks to a friend in a laundromat about washing clothes. Segments include “What’s Your Terge?” where guests discuss their preferred detergent, and “Bleach, Please,” where they talk about something that bothers them about laundry. Each episode is filled with banter gone horribly wrong. For both: any Tom Scharpling ep, or the hilarious ep with Allie Goertz where Brett pitches his laundry-themed musical.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-laundry-podcast-with-radley-carolla/id1254592653Nick Recommends - ScriptnotesScreenwriters John August and Craig Mazin discuss screenwriting and related topics in the film and television industry, everything from getting stuff written to the vagaries of copyright and work-for-hire law.For either: Take ya pick!https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/scriptnotes-podcast/id462495496Zane Recommends - The Irrationally Exuberanthttps://theirrationallyexuberant.com/Back with another listener submission, Zane has brought in The Irrationally Exuberant. Reid Messerschmidt delivers this podcast (which is also art) this constists of a stream-of-conciousness, scripted, absurdist take on history, pop culture, animals, religion, conspiracies, music, books, language, the paranormal, insects, Johnny Appleseed, The Harlem Globetrotters, McDonald's, Satan, God, humanity, crows, Reptilians, alternative medicine, bees, Eddie Vedder... and the list goes on. You really need to listen to this one to understand what it, in fact, is.For Nick & Liz: Pick one that appeals!https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-irrationally-exuberant/id1289105880?ls=1&mt=2Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.

It’s November so we’re going for a Fiction theme for NaNoWriMo. Zane goes back to one of the originals in podcast fiction land with Rabbits, Liz looks at an audio drama designed to create awareness of homelessness through storytelling with Baby It’s Cold Outside and Patrick gets down with his inner and outer nerd with The Glass Cannon Podcast. Then it’s on to last week’s reviews!Liz Recommends - Baby it’s Cold Outsidehttps://www.crisis.org.uk/get-involved/podcastChris O’Dowd and Anne-Marie Duff star in this three act radio drama that delves into the difficulties faced by those who find themselves homeless, especially around the holidays. Liz was particularly tickled with this one because not only was it a good dramatic production, but it was created with crisis.org.uk to raise funds for the homeless. Liz thinks using theatre and drama for social good is very good indeed.“Written by award winning screenwriter Regina Moriarty and directed by Virginia Gilbert, the show is a thought-provoking journey, finding humour in the darkness whilst hitting home the impact of homelessness in the UK.“Baby, It's Cold Outside was developed by Duck Soup Films, in association with Crisis. It marks the launch of Fremantle's scripted podcast label, Storyglass, which will commission and develop original scripted ideas from storytellers around the world.”For Both: listen to the whole thing from the start. It’s short.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/baby-its-cold-outside/id1445734509Pat Recommends - The Glass Cannon Podcasthttps://glasscannonpodcast.com/Fictional you say? I don't ordinarily deal in fiction when it comes to podcasts but I suppose I'll make an exception considering the circumstances. As you may well know I'm a huge fan of D&D, and this podcast is D&D adjacent. These guys are playing Pathfinder, which is D&D for nerds, it has more nitty gritty rules. They're hilarious and terribly entertaining and there's a plethora of episodes so please enjoy. For Zane and Lizne: Start from the beginninghttps://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/the-glass-cannon-podcast/id1007021910Zane Recommends - Rabbitshttps://www.rabbitspodcast.com/For our Fiction special Zane thought that he would recommend the frist audiodrama serial he ever listened to - Rabbits. Rabbits is a documentary/docudrama that follows one womans investigation of her friends disappearance and her possible involvement in a shadowy secret society that orchestrates a decades-long life and death game. For Pat & Liz: From the start.https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/rabbits/id1209601557?mt=2Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.

This week our guest is leading international storyteller Daniel Morden. It's Mental Health week at Castology, as the team recommend podcasts to do with all things self-care and psychology. (Also if you need it, this is your weekly reminder to look after yourself!) Liz recommends (possibly the longest titled podcast ever) The Savvy Psychologist's Quick And Dirty Tips For Better Mental Health; Patrick gets zen with a bit of guided meditation thanks to Meditation Oasis; and Zane goes completely left of field and recommends a fictional podcast that takes a peek into the therapy sessions of superpowered people with The Bright Sessions. Then, it's review time for last week's submissions.Liz Recommends - The Savvy Psychologist's Quick And Dirty Tips For Better Mental Healthhttps://www.quickanddirtytips.com/savvy-psychologistThis is one of Liz's favourite podcasts to recommend to friends struggling with the various issues of, you know, living in the world. Got anxiety? Dealing with stress? Wondering if negative thoughts are really that bad? Having weird dreams and wondering if they mean anything? The Savvy Psychologist aka clinical psychologist Dr Jade Wu probably has an episode for you. At only 10-15 mins per episode, this podcast is a legit easy-to-digest snack to help you snap back to reality and regain control of some aspects of your life that may have gotten messy. It's really handy beginner's guide to understanding how we work as emotional human beings. It's like mini on-the-go therapy real talk. For both: Pick a topic you struggle with or want more information on and go go go!https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/savvy-psychologists-quick-dirty-tips-for-better-mental/id803978236Pat Recommends - Meditation Oasishttps://www.meditationoasis.com/Meditation for me is one of those things that I always tell myself I'll start doing on a regular basis. A couple of times a week isn't terribly regular, is it? This podcast helps tremendously though. It's especially good if you've never meditated before or find yourself getting frustrated with your solo attempts. Mary and Richard Maddox bring 40 years of mediation teaching and practice between them, so you can trust you're in good hands. I chose this podcast over others because it seemed to me the most pure, a little bit of preamble and then straight into the mediation, often with a soothing musical accompaniment. There's 60 episodes and they range form 10 - 30 minutes. Stay healthy people, mentally healthy.Zane & Liz: Whatever you do, don't pick the wrong one.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/meditation-oasis/id204570355Zane Recommends - The Bright Sessionshttp://www.thebrightsessions.com/On this theme week, Zane is presenting to you, The Bright Sessions. The Bright Sessions is a science fiction podcast that follows a group of therapy patients. But these are not your typical patients - each has a unique supernatural ability. The show documents their struggles and discoveries as well as the motivations of their mysterious therapist, Dr. Bright. The show is written and directed by Lauren Shippen and has concluded its main run. However, there is a sequel series planned for release exclusively on Luminary and Lauren Shippen is writing three YA novels in the universe of the show for Tor Teen. The first comes out September 24th, 2019.For Pat & Liz: Start from the beginning but it is easy to jump into.https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-bright-sessions/id1053268058?mt=2Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.
After a brief departure from their usual "type" of podcast, the gang are all back in their wheelhouse with this week's offerings. Zane takes time out to try to empathise with pop culture's worst evildoers with Next Door Villain, Liz looks at crime of the non-murdery variety with Con Artists and Patrick is back to thinky informational self with The Portal With Eric Weinsten. Then as always, it's on to the reviews from last week's submissions.Liz Recommends - Con Artistshttps://www.parcast.com/conartistsThis one is relatively new so Liz wants credit for liking it before it was cool. The format for this one is great: Ep one on the fraudster focuses on the rise of their crimes and ep two is how they got caught. "They seem like a friend. Family, even. You trust them with your life. But behind the promises of fame, success, and riches beyond your wildest dreams... it’s just another guy in a fake Rolex. Con Artists peeks behind the masks of hustlers, swindlers, and fraudsters. We’ll dive into their psychology, and teach listeners how to spot a con. What kind of person runs a scam? And why do we trust them? Con Artists is a Parcast Original. New episodes come out every Wednesday." Because it's kinda nice to find out the sociopathic tendencies of people who don't resort to murder for a change, right? Even if they did cheat hundreds of people and defraud... OK Liz will shut up now.For both: Bernie Madoff parts one and two.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/con-artists/id1471046920Pat Recommends - The Portal with Eric WeinsteinA new podcast from one of my favourite brains! Eric Weinstein is one of them polymaths, one of them clever folks who thinks good. He's a mathematician, an economist, and the managing director of an investment firm. It's difficult to say what the format or content of this podcast is just yet, but so far it's seems to be interviewish and subversive. That works for me. Let's follow along and see what happens next. For Zane & Liz: Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Lawhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-portal/id1469999563Zane Recommends - Next Door Villainhttps://www.nextdoorvillain.com/Welcome to Next Door Villain, a podcast where the hosts try to practice empathy by discussing the humanity behind their favorite fictional villains. Each episode, hosts Joe and Tiana discuss a well-known fictional villain. They attempt to find the humanity behind these characters so that we can learn to love, and respect them. Because if we can learn to connect with characters that were designed to be hated, then we might just have a chance at understanding the villains we face in our everyday lives. For Pat: Pick a fun villainFor Liz: Pick a fun villainhttps://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/next-door-villain/id1358530011?mt=2Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.
