Bob has not sensed or heard about any friction in the locker room between Aaron Rodgers and his teammates. Bob, who calls college football games, explains the difference he sees between the games and why NFL teams need to be more patient before playing their young QBs. Pat returns for his final update of the show and begins with the football losses before playing audio from another Rangers loss. Jerry wondered about how arenas transition from ice to hardwood and vice-versa. Thankfully, Zoo used to do that at the Garden so he explains the process. The Moment of The Day: Pat Boyle just learned the lyrics of “Baby It's Cold Outside” are creepy. Hour 1 Jerry and CLo are here today and we had breaking news overnight with Sean Manaea and the Mets agreeing to a new three-year contract. Jerry and CLo both expect Pete Alonso to end up back with the Mets as well. It is a football Monday and Jerry begins with the Giants mess. They don't have a QB, are in position for the number one overall pick and are losing badly. Jerry points out that Joe Schoen's first two first-round picks have been big misses. Overall, Jerry is tired of only blaming GMs and coaches when players get paid to perform. Jerry and CLo agree that a rookie QB taken first overall will bring some energy into the building but they'll have to start winning to keep it up. Pat Boyle is here for his first update of the day and begins with Drew Lock's first pick-6 in the Giants' loss to the Falcons. Brian Daboll said “not good enough” many times after the game. Jerry and CLo think he looks like a beaten man. In the final segment of the hour, callers explain why they want the Giants to clean house. Anya in Maryland loves Jerry, CLo and Willie Colon so it's a good week for her. Hour 2 Jerry is more open to the Jets bringing Aaron Rodgers back next year than CLo is. CLo doesn't believe Rodgers is well-liked by teammates. Pat returns for an update and tries to tell the guys about the lyrics of “Baby, It's Cold Outside” before being told everyone knows. The Commanders came from behind to beat the Eagles and clinch a playoff spot. Jalen Hurts left the game with a concussion. Sam Darnold was excellent again in another Vikings win. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry and CLo agree that no matter what the Giants decide, it's fair to say Joe Schoen has not done a good job through his first three years. Hour 3 CLo wants to know how Jerry and others are sure the objects they are seeing in the sky are drones and not planes. Jerry asks CLo how many wins the Chiefs would have without Patrick Mahomes. The guys discuss Mahomes as an example of getting a great QB without having the first pick. Jerry and CLo ponder the value of a QB vs the importance of having a good team around them. Pat returns for an update but first, he did Jerry's assignment and watched a comedian compare the lyrics of “Baby, It's Cold Outside” to “WAP”. The Raiders blew their tank so the Giants now have the inside track for the number one pick. Garrett Wilson sounded frustrated about not getting enough targets early in the game. Jerry points out that the Jets offense was humming in the first half and that Garrett Wilson should not worry about targets on successful drives. In the final segment of the hour, the guys remember Rickey Henderson. Then, they discuss Charlie Woods', son of Tiger, hole-in-one and similarities to his father. Hour 4 Jerry's “best friend of all-time at WFAN” calls in to the show. He's also known as Bob Wischusen, the radio voice of the Jets for 23 years. Jerry wants to know what this Jets team is. Bob says a team with enough talent to pique the interest of Bill Belichick. He says they are frustrating and have the talent to win more games than they have. Send Mary and Kelsey a Message! In this episode, Mary and Kelsey deconstruct "Over The Influence: A Memoir" by Joanna “Jojo” Levesque. Many of us know Jojo as a tween sensation who made it big at age 13 with her hit singles, Leave (Get Out), Baby It's You, and Too Little, Too Late. After reaching the kind of success most artists strive their entire lives for at such a young age, Jojo seemingly disappeared from the airwaves and the public eye. Her memoir peels back the curtain, showing how she was held hostage by a bad contract, and her personal experiences with addiction, toxic relationships, difficult family dynamics, and learning to trust herself in her pursuit of creative freedom. Instagram: @whentheypoppedpodTikTok: @whentheypoppedEmail: whentheypoppedy2k@gmail.comWebsite: linktree.com/whentheypopped

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Edna O'Brien (1930-2024) The great Irish novelist and playwright Edna O'Brien died at the age of 93 on July 27, 2024 after a long illness. A controversial figure from the start, her first novel from 1960, The Country Girls, which dealt with sexual and social issues in Ireland following World War II, was banned in Ireland and denounced on the pulpit, and while she moved to London with her husband before publication, she never moved back to her native land. This interview was conducted in the KPFA studios on April 28, 2000 while she was on tour for her novel, “Wild Decembers,” third in a thematic trilogy of novels set in the recent past in Ireland. It was later adapted for television in 2008.. Of Edna O'Brien, from Wikipedia, the novelist Andrew O'Hagan wrote, “She changed the nature of Irish fiction, she brought the woman's experience and sex and internal lives of those people on to the page, and she did it with style, and she made those concerns international.” In her lifetime, Edna O'Brien wrote seventeen novels, several plays, eight short story collections, eight works of non-fiction, four children's books and a collection of poems. Edna O'Brien continued to write novels and plays well into her nineties. Her final novel, Girl, was published in 2019. This interview was digitized, remastered and edited in August 2024 and is heard for the first time in its entirety. A second interview, recorded in 2003 while in San Francisco working on her play “Triptych” at the Magic Theatre will be posted on a later date.     John Sayles discusses his latest novel, “Jamie MacGillivray, The Renegade's Journey,” along with his work as a writer and film-maker, with host Richard Wolinsky. Second of two parts. John Sayles is best known for his work as a director, screenwriter and actor, though this is his sixth novel. Among the films he directed are Lone Star, Sunshine State, Eight Men Out, Matewan, The Brother from Another Planet, Baby It's You and Passion Fish. Jessica Fontana admits that her need to feel like she's in control impacts her journey in balancing her professional and personal life. Her passion for performing arts began with ballet, which eventually set the stage for her career in musical theater. While Jessica's mom highly supported her artistic endeavors, her father initially wasn't. She talks about her college experience at the University of Michigan and its role in shaping her career and changing her dad's mind. Married to fellow actor, Santino Fontana, she recalls how they met at Birdland Jazz Club, recounting how he left before they could get a drink together, only to friend her on Facebook later that night, slipping into her DMs. Jessica explained her shift from performing regularly to creating her album, "Every Day Special" – a transition that allowed her more control over her creative work and schedule, reflecting her desire for creative autonomy and finding joy and fun in whatever she does. Jessica Fontana is an actress, and the writer, host, co-creator, and co-executive producer of “Everyday Special”, an improvised satirical podcast. She has starred on Broadway in the title role of Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Cinderella”, “Baby It's You”, and “Pipe Dream” in New York City Center's Encores! Series. She's been seen in the hit web series “Submissions Only”, and has starred in the world premiere productions at regional theaters, including the Goodspeed Opera House, Paper Mill Playhouse, Signature Theater, and Carnegie Hall. Lots of songwriters point to the idea that the best songs are the ones that tend to find the you, letting the writer be the vessel or medium. Much like "Yesterday" did for Paul, "Across The Universe" seemed to come to John from within a dreamstate, appearing in his subconscious while lying in bed, almost pushing him to get up and go write down the words and find the melody that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. An absolutely gorgeous lyric no doubt influenced by the band's recent immersion into meditation and easter philosophy, the song marks John at perhaps his most cosmic and peaceful. The irony is that from a recording standpoint, John never could figure out what he wanted to do with the song. Unlike "Yesterday," where George Martin seemed to know exactly what the song needed, that directive and inspiration was no where to be found for "Across The Universe." Lennon lead the band through multiple arrangement ideas but never captured what he thought he was hearing in his head, or where he thought the song should go. Which is a shame because I think although it's a really beautiful track (I love all the versions out there) the track ultimately suffers from an almost un-easy performance from John. As released, it never feels totally settled and comfortable in it's own skin. It's almost like it's missing the confidence in the delivery because John never seems sure of where he should be going. But even still, it's a beautiful song, one of John's best written songs, I just think it's a B- minus track of an A+ song. Joining us this week is jazz guitarist Dan Wilson! The Ohio-based virtuoso joins us to chat about making people move, jazz vs rock, coming into jazz from a church and funk background, and his newest album Things Eternal, which features a FANTASTIC version of "Eleanor Rigby." There's a taste here in the episode, but we highly recommend you check out the whole thing. Be sure to follow Dan on Facebook and at his website to hear more music and see when he's playing! It almost seems a shame that the Beatles only ever recorded one Burt Bacharach song. There are arguably no finer melodicists in modern popular music than Bacharach and Lennon/McCartney. But "Baby, It's You" is the only song from his catalogue they ever laid to tape. Recorded for their first album and a product of their well documented love of girl-group R&B, it's a chance for John to show his fantastic, soulful voice. His voice really carries the track with an impassioned delivery, bolstered by always great background vocals from Paul and George, solid foundation, and a charming celeste solo from George Martin. It's a wonderful example of John's potential for being a blue-eyed soul singer if things had been a little different. Joining us this week is Chuck Gunderson, author of "Some Fun Tonight - The Backstage Story of How the Beatles Rocked America: The Historic Tours of 1964-1966." His books are the absolutely definitive look at the Beatles North American tours, the going-ons that made them happen, and the behind the curtain look at what went down. It's a stunning 2 volume set filled with hundreds of unreleased photos, we can't recommend it enough! We talk with Chuck about Beatles tributes, writing the book you want to read, the simplicity of early Beatles tours, girl groups, US albums and more!
