In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jake Chapman (@jakechapwoman)Working together with his older brother, Dinos Chapman, Young British Artist Jake Chapman has been producing installations, sculptures, paintings, and works on paper since the early 1990s that appall, anger, seduce, and thrill—often simultaneously. An iconoclast to his core, Chapman describes himself as a collection of “traitorous little traits that add up to make the big deplorable trait that is me, me, me.” Such tongue-in-cheek humor underpins all of his work, through which he confronts the horrors and excesses of history, culture, politics, and religion with an unforgiving aesthetic. He does not shy away from representations of sex, violence, and mutilation. In Fucking Hell (2008), for example, he and his brother created an immense tabletop tableau representing the 20th century as a grotesque, apocalyptic warscape.Bio c/o www.artsy.netFor more information on the work of Jake Chapman go tohttps://heimlich.co.uk/To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: ministryofartsorg@gmail.comSocial Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. Season 14 continues with VERY special episode with one of our all-time ART WORLD ICONS!!!! We meet the legendary gallerist MAUREEN PALEY. Inspiration to many of today's international contemporary galleries, Maureen was in fact the reason our co-host Robert Diament became inspired to change careers to work full-time in a gallery! We discover how she began her gallery programme in 1984 in a Victorian terraced house in London's East End. Initially named Interim Art, the gallery changed its name to Maureen Paley in 2004 as a celebration of its 20th anniversary. Since September 1999 the gallery has been situated in Bethnal Green, and in September 2020 relocated to Three Colts Lane. In July 2017 Maureen Paley opened a second space in Hove called Morena di Luna. In October 2020 a third space was opened in Shoreditch, London called Studio M. From its inception, the gallery's aim has remained consistent: to promote great and innovative artists in all media.-Maureen Paley was one of the first to present contemporary art in London's East End and has been a pioneer of the current scene, promoting and showing a diverse range of international artists. Gallery artists include Turner Prize winners Lawrence Abu Hamdan, 2019; Wolfgang Tillmans, 2000 and Gillian Wearing, 1997 as well as Turner Prize nominees Rebecca Warren, 2006; Liam Gillick, 2002; Jane and Louise Wilson, 1999 and Hannah Collins, 1993. Represented artists also include AA Bronson, Felipe Baeza, Tom Burr, Michaela Eichwald, Morgan Fisher, General Idea, Anne Hardy, Peter Hujar, Michael Krebber, Paulo Nimer Pjota, Olivia Plender, Stephen Prina, Maaike Schoorel, Hannah Starkey, Chioma Ebinama, Oscar Tuazon, and James Welling.Maureen Paley, the gallery's founder and director, was born in New York, studied at Sarah Lawrence College, and graduated from Brown University before coming to the UK in 1977 where she completed her Masters at The Royal College of Art from 1978–80.Together with running the gallery, Maureen Paley has also curated a number of large-scale public exhibitions. In 1994 she organised an exhibition of works by Felix Gonzales Torres, Joseph Kosuth and Ad Reinhardt at the Camden Arts Centre. In 1995 Wall to Wall was presented for the Arts Council GB National Touring Exhibitions and appeared at the Serpentine Gallery, London, Southampton City Art Gallery and Leeds City Art Gallery showing wall drawings by international artists including Daniel Buren, Michael Craig-Martin, Douglas Gordon, Barbara Kruger, Sol Lewitt, and Lawrence Weiner. Maureen Paley also selected an exhibition of work by young British artists in 1996 called The Cauldron featuring Christine Borland, Angela Bulloch, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Steven Pippin, Georgina Starr and Gillian Wearing for the Henry Moore Sculpture Trust which was installed in their Studio space in Dean Clough, Halifax.Follow @MaureenPaley on Instagram. Art Seeker Stories: A postcard from London UK : My artist journey and travels as an art seeker, a culture vulture, a 20 something trolly dolly. My diary edit, nostalgically looking back, 22 years to the day - today. I take a trip to London to the Royal Acadamy and catch the crest of the wave as it begins to fall. This is Saatchi decade's follow up show to ‘Sensation', Apocolypse, Beauty and Horror in Contemporary Art, ironically before much of it disappears for good, up in smoke. 22 years later, Art in London still shocks, and doesn't. The messages are still the same. There is space for everyone to be included, no matter who you are or what you believe, it's all about expression, if you desire, you carve your path. For now, London is in mourning for Our Queen Elizabeth II, tomorrow she'll be laid to rest. Jake and Dinos Chapman. These brothers, better known as Les Enfantes Terribles, have reappropriated several of Francisco Goya's etchings. But what was their purpose? Catch up with the llamas this week as they try to understand whether these "terrible children" were truly defiling great works of art or if they were simply following a contemporary art movement. This month Stuart and Guy are joined from sunny California by author, presenter and journalist Andrew Smith. We look at how music has continually inspired Andrew's work, through his time as a music journalist, writing his bestselling Moondust: in Search of the Men Who Fell to Earth, then through to his recent Totally Wired: The Rise and Fall of Josh Harris and the Great Dotcom Swindle. Armed with a list of ten songs that have served to soundtrack his life, we discuss Andrew's career (with some surprising diversions along the way including living down the street from Bob Dylan when he was a toddler, auditioning for the Clash and interviewing Madonna!). Listen to Andrew's specially compiled Spotify playlist here. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0sQq6t0JA7Mm4wot8oZNY8?si=d56abef6592845a0 Find out more about Andrew's work at andrewsmithauthor.com Biog:Andrew Smith was born in Greenwich Village, New York, to English parents. A spell living in San Francisco was followed by relocation to the Hastings in the UK, where school classmates at his comprehensive school included the artist Dinos Chapman and future Spice Girls/Pop Idol svengali Simon Fuller – who managed Smith's sixth form band, but could do nothing to help them. After studying philosophy and politics at the University of York, he moved to London, where he worked as a van driver, in music stores and as a musician (at one point auditioning for The Clash), before finally submitting to his first love, which was writing. Starting at the music paper Melody Maker, he moved rapidly to The Face, Guardian, Sunday Times and Observer as a longform feature writer, but in 2002 left journalism to write his UK #1 and international bestseller Moondust: in Search of the Men Who Fell to Earth, which was nominated for two British Book Awards (including Read of the Year) and chosen by the Times as one of its “100 Best Books of the Decade”. His most recent work, Totally Wired: The Rise and Fall of Josh Harris and the Great Dotcom Swindle, about the mysterious crash of Web 1.0, was Published by Grove Atlantic in 2019 and is currently being developed into a TV series by the actor/director Ben Stiller. His third book, Adventures in Coderland, about the micro-cosmos of computer code and this attempt to get inside it, will appear in 2022. Smith appears often on radio and TV and is the writer and presenter of films including the 60-minute BBC documentaries Being Neil Armstrong and To Kill A Mockingbird at 50. He currently divides his time between the San Francisco Bay Area and London, England.
Former arts editor and founding member of iconic 90's magazine Dazed & Confused, art curator, writer and consultant Mark Sanders played a key role in identifying the artistic revolution that was happening in London at the time and collaborated closely with Jake and Dinos Chapman, Barbara Kruger and Paul McCarthy. Here he takes time out to talk openly and frankly about his experiences with the sacred plant medicine Ayahuasca, fresh from a retreat in the UK this conversation was recorded just a few days after the two night ceremony. Mark has drunk Ayahuasca more than 20 times in Brazil, but this was his first time working with this amazing teacher outside of the jungle. If you're interested in exploring this powerful medicine, hopefully this discussion will inform you and either turn you on... Finishing February on a high, we're back with another art-filled episode. Exhibition highlights include France-Lise McGurn at Simon Lee Gallery, '9th St. Club' at Gazelli Art House, and a sculptural double-billing at Lisson Gallery in the form of Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg. We were saddened to hear of the closure of commercial power-house Blain Southern. Known for representing the likes of Jake and Dinos Chapman, Mat Collishaw, and Sean Scully, the gallery announced its closure of all three spaces this month following the departure of co-founder Graham Southern in late 2019. We dissect what went wrong and what it means for the art world. And from the sad to the ridiculous, we couldn't pass by the story of the disgruntled art critic who accidentally destroyed an artwork she openly disliked at Zona Maco fair in Mexico. Finally, breaking from tradition our Artist Focus is actually a group: the Women Impressionists. We welcome the long-overdue attention given to the female artists who contributed to famous art movements, and this episode we celebrate two key Impressionists: Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt.
