Learn to accept yourself and celebrate others in their wins. Don't get caught up in the societal comparison trap.Growing Up: Suffering is a part of growth. It's completely normal to suffer and experience hardships in your teenage years. For Pat, being small and immature was a major struggle. Also, he suffered from severe OCD as a child. Recently, I have been thinking a lot about the fact that I live in a grieving home, and I am continuing to raise my children in a grieving home and that there is nothing that I can do to change that. It is just not the same place that it was two years ago. Don't get me wrong - we still laugh have fun together, but the grief is always there. The tears are just around the corner, and I feel like my children especially don't talk to me as they once did, fearing that they might 'get me upset.'  My oldest daughter is moving to college in two short weeks and seems so anxious to get out of this house. I find myself wondering if she would be feeling the same way if her brother was alive and we were not so broken. Perhaps it would have made no difference, but I cannot help but wonder. Today's guest, Pat, grew up in a grieving home as well, although it took her over 50 years to realize this fact. She never knew her brother, Greg, who was born 6 years before her own birth and died at 4 months of age. She found out that he existed only by accident as a young girl. He was never talked about in the family by anyone. She found his gravestone in the cemetery by herself and would even visit and talk with him without the knowledge of her parents or siblings. An interesting thing happened in 2012, however - the year that Greg would have turned 60. Pat's mother, who was now in her mid-80's, began to really open up and talk to Pat about Greg. She talked about what it was like for her to suddenly lose her previously healthy baby. She talked about her guilt, her anger, the lack of support from others and all of those other pent up emotions. With the sharing of her heart, Pat saw years of stress and tension just fall away. She witnessed her mom really begin the process of healing that had not really even begun despite the passing of 60 years. Pat began to realize why her home was always just a little more sad and a little more quiet than it should be with four kids in the home. Someone had always been missing, and no one in her family had ever acknowledged it. A major turning point in her mother's grief journey came during a trip to the bank where the bank teller innocently asked her how many children she had. For the very first time ever, she proclaimed, "Five." Ever since Pat had been born 54 years ago, the answer to that question had been inaccurate. What a relief that must have been! For sixty years, that question must have pained her as it does me, knowing that the number that she was sharing was not really true. These months of talking with her mom and grief changed Pat as well. She had always known that she was a good listener and had been transitioning her career to become a life coach. She soon realized, however, that she did not simply want to be a life coach. She needed to become a grief coach. She needed to help grieving people face their grief and learn to live with it, in order to help as many grieving homes as possible. Recently, she even published a book, How Do I Survive: 7 Steps to Living After Child Loss, which can be found free on her website, HealingFamilyGrief.com. Yes, I am living in a grieving home and raising children in a grieving home, but isn't everyone doing that to a certain extent? Grief is a part of life and love, and no one can truly escape it forever. Certainly, I would have liked to protect my family from having to live this way, but I could not. This experience will mold and shape them, but that molding and shaping is not exclusively bad. As I feel that I am a more compassionate person, the rest of my family will be as well. For Pat, growing up in a grieving home eventually helped her find her true purpose in life. Perhaps, it will do the same for my family.

Over the next few years, his small personal training business grew to a network of successful businesses ranging from franchises and certification companies to info-marketing and real estate. Then it’s on to last week’s reviews!Liz Recommends - Baby it’s Cold Outsidehttps://www.crisis.org.uk/get-involved/podcastChris O’Dowd and Anne-Marie Duff star in this three act radio drama that delves into the difficulties faced by those who find themselves homeless, especially around the holidays. Liz was particularly tickled with this one because not only was it a good dramatic production, but it was created with crisis.org.uk to raise funds for the homeless. Liz thinks using theatre and drama for social good is very good indeed.“Written by award winning screenwriter Regina Moriarty and directed by Virginia Gilbert, the show is a thought-provoking journey, finding humour in the darkness whilst hitting home the impact of homelessness in the UK.“Baby, It's Cold Outside was developed by Duck Soup Films, in association with Crisis. I don't ordinarily deal in fiction when it comes to podcasts but I suppose I'll make an exception considering the circumstances. Liz has a new interest in dating podcasts thanks to her new podcast Ghosts of Boyfriends Past so she's grabbed Frank and Beans from the listener submissions list. And then Patrick looks at a super approachable hard science offering with Sean Carroll's Mindscape (while being very hungover). Spoooooooky Halloween everybody! This week's episode is all about the creepy, kooky and downright spooky so we've found podcasts to recommend that are (hopefully) guaranteed to make your skin crawl. Liz recommends an immersive drama featuring some star power with Cynthia Erivo, Carrier; Zane looks to this mortal coil with real-life supernatural encounters in Spooked WNYC; and Patrick takes a look the frightening history behind common folklore with the podcast that spawned an Amazon Prime TV series, Lore.Liz Recommends - Carrierhttps://www.qcodemedia.com/carrierThe main reason Liz got so, erm, carried away with Carrier was the immersive experience factor. Thanks to excellent soundscapes and use of surround sound, you really feel like you're in the episode and experiencing every eerie thing the protagonist is experiencing."What happens when a truck driver picks up a loaded trailer, but has no idea what’s really inside? Tony, Grammy, and Emmy award winner Cynthia Erivo journeys down a dark and lonely highway in this original scripted thriller from Qcode and creator Dan Blank. With immersive audio techniques that create a dimensional listening experience, the audience is strongly advised to use caution, wear headphones if possible, and listen... carefully."For both: It's a serial so start from the start and listen with headphones for a full experience.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/carrier/id1468956772Pat Recommends - Lorehttps://www.lorepodcast.com/Hosted by Aaron Mahnke, Lore is an award-winning, podcast about true life scary stories. It's Mental Health week at Castology, as the team recommend podcasts to do with all things self-care and psychology. (Also if you need it, this is your weekly reminder to look after yourself!) Liz recommends (possibly the longest titled podcast ever) The Savvy Psychologist's Quick And Dirty Tips For Better Mental Health; Patrick gets zen with a bit of guided meditation thanks to Meditation Oasis; and Zane goes completely left of field and recommends a fictional podcast that takes a peek into the therapy sessions of superpowered people with The Bright Sessions. Then, it's review time for last week's submissions.Liz Recommends - The Savvy Psychologist's Quick And Dirty Tips For Better Mental Healthhttps://www.quickanddirtytips.com/savvy-psychologistThis is one of Liz's favourite podcasts to recommend to friends struggling with the various issues of, you know, living in the world. Got anxiety? Dealing with stress? Wondering if negative thoughts are really that bad? Having weird dreams and wondering if they mean anything? The Savvy Psychologist aka clinical psychologist Dr Jade Wu probably has an episode for you. At only 10-15 mins per episode, this podcast is a legit easy-to-digest snack to help you snap back to reality and regain control of some aspects of your life that may have gotten messy. It's really handy beginner's guide to understanding how we work as emotional human beings. It's like mini on-the-go therapy real talk. For both: Pick a topic you struggle with or want more information on and go go go!https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/savvy-psychologists-quick-dirty-tips-for-better-mental/id803978236Pat Recommends - Meditation Oasishttps://www.meditationoasis.com/Meditation for me is one of those things that I always tell myself I'll start doing on a regular basis. A couple of times a week isn't terribly regular, is it? This podcast helps tremendously though. It's especially good if you've never meditated before or find yourself getting frustrated with your solo attempts. Mary and Richard Maddox bring 40 years of mediation teaching and practice between them, so you can trust you're in good hands. I chose this podcast over others because it seemed to me the most pure, a little bit of preamble and then straight into the mediation, often with a soothing musical accompaniment. There's 60 episodes and they range form 10 - 30 minutes. Stay healthy people, mentally healthy.Zane & Liz: Whatever you do, don't pick the wrong one.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/meditation-oasis/id204570355Zane Recommends - The Bright Sessionshttp://www.thebrightsessions.com/On this theme week, Zane is presenting to you, The Bright Sessions. OMG we did it again, and accidentally have a theme. It's LISTENER SUBMISSION week! That's right, we are bringing you YOUR recommendations (for three of you, anyway). And it just so happens to also have a slighly fail-centric theme. Liz brings the relationship drama with UR Gonna Die Alone, Patrick is all about stuffing up with style with The Art of Failure, and Zane gets on his social justice high horse with In Sickness and In Health.Liz Recommends - UR Gonna Die Alonehttps://urgonnadiealone.libsyn.com/Yes that is the correct spelling for the title and yes it made journo Liz shudder. This podcast is hosted by the super sarcastic team of Christyn Chandler and Jordan Jacobo and is all about trainwreck relationships. That's right, famous relationships that have crashed and burned. Each episode looks at a different couple and tells their story of romantic implosion. If you, like Liz, are a complete dating cynic then this podcast is most certainly for you. Sit back and enjoy the sordid details and schadenfreude. For both: I particularly liked Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, the Tom Cruise series, and Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.Link https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ur-gonna-die-alone/id1412835724Pat Recommends - The Art of Failurehttps://www.artoffailurepodcast.com/A listener submission you say? Hello, welcome, pull up a chair and settle in for podcast reviews to help you choose. Zane brings the movie lover goods to the table with another listener recommendation: Miscast Commentary. And Liz listens to her psychologist mama like always and recommends a clinical psychology podcast with an almost voyeuristic twist with Where Should We Begin? Here we learn, explore, and experience alongside the couples who have been gracious enough to let us in." This podcast takes the listener into the normally private world of therapy, with audiences able to sit in on a session conducted by world famous psychologist and couples therapy expert Esther Perel. Vulnerabilities are laid bare as we listen to situations unfold on the therapists couch in what essentially amounts to single session case studies of those involved. YES the participants applied to be a part of this so they are aware they are being recorded, and yes sometimes listening in can be a confronting experience but interjections by Esther explaining what can be gleaned from each episode is a rich well from which to draw emotional sustenance and learning. For both: Pick an episode title that appeals to you. That's what it says on the website anyway. I'm inclined to agree. Maybe 'candid conversations that make you cry' could work. I cried in one of the episodes. Renowned journalist Mia Freedman sits down with a vast array of people for roughly an hour and gets into the nitty gritty. There doesn't theem to be a theme other than unabashedness and honesty, and honestly, that's enough for me.For Zane & Liz: Gabbie Stroud & Dr Naomihttps://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/no-filter/id995159486Zane Recommends - Miscast Commentary Reviewhttp://www.miscastcommentary.com/Miscast Commentary is about a pair of friends providing full length commentary for the movies (or the types of movies) that they watched growing up together. Then as always we all take turns reviewing what was recommended last week.Liz Recommends - 36 Questions: The Musical Podcasthttps://www.twoupproductions.com/36-questions"In this three-part podcast musical starring Jonathan Groff and Jessie Shelton, a couple attempts to bring their marriage back from the brink of divorce using 36 revealing questions designed to make strangers fall in love." Liz is so bloody happy this podcast exists and thinks more people trying to get their work seen and heard by the wider public should turn to the wonderful medium of podcasts rather than expecting to get Broadway money straight away. Here we are, just for you. We do the hard work of finding new podcasts for your aural pleasure so you don't have to. This week Zane is recommending Dragon Friends, Liz is putting forward Deadly Manners and Patrick is all about them Tiny Desk concerts. And stick around after the recommendations for the reviews of last week's podcast offerings.Liz Recommends - Deadly Mannershttps://deadlymanners.libsyn.com/Do you like theatre? Radio plays? Camp murder mystery drama and noirish intrigue? Then this is right up your alley. A short radio play series featuring Kristen Bell, RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Ross Matthews and more, Deadly Manners is a schlocky whodunnit in the style of And Then There Were None/Cluedo etc. Will you guess who the killer is? And why? Who knows! But you'll have fun listening to the over-the-top yet simultaneously realistic (yes, somehow both) performances, and all the Agatha Christie-style melodrama you can handle. For both: You guessed it, it's another serial so start from the start and listen to as many as you wish.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/deadly-manners/id1289105780Pat Recommends - Tiny Deskhttps://www.npr.org/series/tiny-desk-concerts/My third NPR podcast is quite a bit different from the other two. Tiny Desk has artists (well known and sometimes often unknown) perform a little concert for those lucky enough to be in the room. The rest of us just have to settle with listening or watching online. That's basically it though, roughly 20 minutes of beautiful music. I've found this to be a great place to discover new music as well as see some of my favourite artists perform at their best. For all of you: St Paul & The Broken Bones, Daniel Caesar, Anderson Paak, Rhye, Noname, Leon Bridgeshttps://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/tiny-desk-concerts-video/id362115318Zane Recommends - Dragon Friendshttps://www.thedragonfriends.com/episodes/podcast/This is a podcast that Zane found doing research into the possibility of a live Dungeons and Dragons show, then got hooked. Dragon Friends is a monthly comedy show and podcast where comedians muddle through their first Dungeons & Dragons adventure campaign. The rules are... lax. The stories are... muddled? But the cast are very funny and definitely do not let up the whole way through the show. It DOES have a tendency to be a bit in-jokey, so go back as far as you can and start the adventure with them. For Pat & Liz: Start with a season break! or go back as far as you can.https://open.spotify.com/show/5oaRbBlvaAkuEE4cILfZdkSubscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.

It's time for more Castology! Are you ready? Are you really? Because we are CHANGING IT UP this week. That's right, from this episode we'll have our recommendations first up, then stick around for our reviews from last week's offerings. This week, Pat recommends one of his favourite ever podcasts, Congressional Dish, Zane brings a listener submission - Dead Ladies Show Podcast - to the table, and Liz looks at another true crime phenomenon in Dr Death.Liz Recommends - Dr DeathLiz should get some sort of award for recommending so many Wondery podcasts. This week it's all about Dr Duntsch aka Dr Death."33 Patients. A Charming Surgeon. A Spineless System. We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. We trust the person at the other end of that scalpel. We trust the hospital. We trust the system. Dr. Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who radiated confidence. He claimed he was the best in Dallas. If you had back pain, and had tried everything else, Dr. Duntsch could give you the spine surgery that would take your pain away. But soon his patients started to experience complications. And all they had to protect them was a system ill equipped to stop the madness. From Wondery, the network behind the hit podcast Dirty John, DR. DEATH is about a medical system that failed to protect these patients at every possible turn. Reported and hosted by Laura Beil."For both: This is a serial podcast so ya gotta start from the start.Link: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/dr-death/id1421573955Pat Recommends - Congressional DishOK. This is my baby. Not really. It's host Jennifer Briney's baby I guess. But I like to think I've been there since the shower. This woman is one of my heroes. Since 2012 she has been reading the bills that pass through the legislative branch of the United States Government. It's a dirty job, but no one was doing it. Not even the members of the branch, really. This is the raw data. Who is taking money from who, how much and what bills are being put forward as a result. If you want to narrow your news streams to escape the madness of the world I would still urge you to keep this one flowing. This podcast has the potential to change the world. For Zane & Liz: Pick a more recent episode, if you like it go back further. See how deep the rabbit hole goes.https://congressionaldish.comZane Recommends - Dead Ladies Show Podcasthttps://deadladiesshow.com/Zane is so excited to recommend this submission! The Dead Ladies Show (and podcast) is all about women who achieved great things against all odds. IMAGINED LIFE takes you there. Each episode guides listeners on an immersive journey through the surprising moments and challenges that shaped someone’s life before they were famous. Happy April Fool's Day! Our Castologists jokingly thought it would be funny to do a Religion theme on this prankiest of days because it seemed like a good idea at the time. And because none of them are remotely religious they've uncovered some podcasts with some sort of spiritual component... Also it's nearly Easter so just go with it OK? Liz found enlightenment in the words of J.K. Rowling with Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, Zane gets down to worshipping false gods with Zealot, and Patrick gets controversial with The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast. Liz Recommends - Harry Potter and the Sacred Text"On this podcast, we ask: What if we read the books we love as if they were sacred texts?"This podcast is all about looking at the Harry Potter book series as if it were a sacred text and finding out what we can learn from each chapter. The hosts pick a central theme through which to explore the characters and context, always grounding themselves in the text. Through this, they unearth some wonderful lessons we humans can take from the famous plight of the Boy Who Lived. The hosts recommend reading along with them to get the most out of the works but it is not mandatory. For both: Whatever book you remember/chapter/theme takes your fancy.Pat Recommends - The Jordan B Peterson PodcastJordan B Peterson is a clinical psychologist at the University of Toronto. He has quickly become one of the most controversial and polarising figures in popular academia. His podcast usually consists of interviews with guests, Q&A's, and recordings of lectures and conferences. Since this is a very special religious episode I have recommended his psychological significance of the bible series For Zane & Liz: The psychological significance of the bible lectures.https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/the-jordan-b-peterson-podcast/id1184022695?mt=2Zane Recommends - ZealotInfringing a little bit on Liz's territory Zealot is a true crime-ish podcast about cults. Pat Rigsby is a dad, husband, business coach, author, and entrepreneur who has built over 25 different businesses, including two Entrepreneur Franchise 500 award-winning franchises. He got his entrepreneurial start by opening a personal training business and health club. With no money to get these businesses off the ground, he was living with his family in the basement of a shared home. Before long, he started to have some real success (including moving out of the basement), and looked to expand his businesses. Over the next few years, his small personal training business grew to a network of successful businesses ranging from franchises and certification companies to info-marketing and real estate. Pat then found his true calling (coaching and consulting) and has inspired entrepreneurs through his coaching program and bestselling book The IDEAL Business Formula. He’s shared his journey onstage in front of thousands, and has been featured in Entrepreneur, Men’s Health, USA Today, and hundreds of other media outlets. For Pat, the best part is that he’s been able to do all this while working from home, coaching his kids’ sports teams, and enjoying a type of entrepreneurial lifestyle he never would have thought possible just a few years ago. Today he coaches entrepreneurs to create their Ideal Business, one that allows them to earn more profits, have a greater impact, and enjoy more freedom to enjoy life.   Connect with Pat: LinkedIn - in/patrigsby Twitter - @patrigsby Facebook - /PatRigsbyHQ Instagram - @patrigsby5   PEAK PERFORMANCE NATION A community dedicated to raising your game to the next level by learning how to Execute at the highest level and eliminating the obstacles that keep you from being the leader you were born to be. Moments to be proud of was a hard episode for both of us to record.  For Pat it was difficult to relive something that caused a lot of raw emotion.  For Glenn it was a high degree of shock to hear the story. This story unfolds around a young boy and his mum that Pat helped train an assistance dog.  Although it sounds simple enough, it came with some heavy baggage for everyone. The story is still far from finished, however there have been some incredible breakthroughs, both via a mothers love and Pats persistence and compassion. Mental illness is a serious issue that has serious implications requiring the right people for treatment.  It also carries a stigma as people don't know how to behave or what to say.  The best thing you can do though is be supportive and not judgemental.  Learn more about it and how you can better help. We have done several episode now on mental health and we will definitely do more in the future for both humans and dogs.  This is why having a contact like Birdy O'Sheedy is so helpful and healthy as she understand both fields. If you don't feel great and the world is getting difficult, speak to someone.  You're not a burden.  You're not invalid.  You have people that love you and people that do want to be supportive. We would love to hear what you moments to be proud of are too. We have several episode as suggested that would be worth listening to, to support the above. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2018/11/24/episode-53-a-birdys-eye-view-on-anxiety/

I see people who think the "Holy Grail" of podcasting is sponsorship. Now I have sponsors on my show, but when I listen to The Feed From Podcast Media Host Libsyn.com that less than 10% of podcasters get 5,000 downloads or more (as of May 2018). But, what if you did. An old holdover from the radio is selling advertisements by the download. CPM stands for the price for 10000 downloads. These range from $20-%50. So for this example let's use $35/1000 downloads. One episode a week (four episodes a month). That means (5000 downloads multiplied by 4 weeks) you have 20,000 downloads per month. If you multiply 20,000 by .035 (which is $35/1000 to get the price of a single download) and you end up with $700 for the month ($175/episode). Now, this is great if this is a side hustle, but if you're trying to feed a family making $8,400 a YEAR is an issue. What makes it worse, is that some "Everybody gets a sponsor" companies that use Dynamic Ad Injection are paying $1.50 for 1000 downloads (and no that is not a typo - more on that in a later episode). Let's Look at Two Highly Successful Podcast Income Reports I decided to look at the breakdown of two highly successful podcasters. John Lee Dumas, and Pat Flynn (who both publish their income reports). I used the latest reports available. For John, that was April 2018. For Pat that was December 2017. John Lee Dumas April 2017 Podcast Income Report Pat Flynn December 2017 Podcast Income Report Combine The Two Reports My point is that podcast sponsorship should be one of the ways and not THE way to "break out of the 9 to 5 cubical. Hey this is Dave Negri from Contractors Secret Weapon, and for today’s podcast we will be talking with  Pat Morlando. Pat’s been in the business for over 20 years. He was also a sub constructor. In reality you have to be in your toes because you have 2 customers, everything in your business translates in your business. No one knows the food industry like Pat Morlando. Now the extensive experience he had helps him with his current business. He provides quality experience and service towards his customer and to his staff as well. They have over 450 employees and extends to 5 states. It’s all about the service industry now. In today’s market, in every level, they want to understand the vision but also match the personality of the client. If every one of those pieces, the vision of the client will be gone. In each market you have 2 customers, and each should be treated equally and as important.  Meet or beat the expectations of the clients is a must. For Pat, they hire the attitude and train the skill. Product is the product. If you don’t provide good service it won’t be a good product. It will just be so-so for the customers which may not be good. In the party business, they need someone who is very outgoing. For the most part, they will be trained their way. In most industries, it’s getting harder and harder to find qualified employees. Matching an event personality with staff personality ensures that success. The vision has to become the reality. They have systematically grown every year. As a business owner, no matter what happens you need to have profit. The challenging things as far as the programs they have has been, needing an employee that fits the needs of the target market they have. Finding the individual that fits the needs of the company is going to be tough but with the training program this helped the company earn more. Creating an image, going in prepared just like solving the problem before going there. This is something that they represent towards the market that are targeting and servicing. The whole outcome is to make sure that the company invests on their employees because they are hiring for the future. If the employee is not an asset they are not good for the company. Because if not then they are not valuable to you, to the company and to the customers. The company has the ability to put them to work but if the employee is not able to meet the expectations of the company then they have placed that opportunity to the wrong people. Reaffirm the commitment to make every effort to accelerate the achievement of the company so to be able to match the vision, to develop the goals. This is to also deepen the relationship of the owner to their employees. It’s about the customer’s the bottom line. It reflects on Pat’s company. “Servicing the hospitality industry is not only our Mission, but our Passion!” this is the motto they have and you can also see this in their website. They have franchised their companies, and what they’re looking for was group of business that they love what they want. Enjoying their team. Expand their branch nationwide. A game we previously delved into at PAX, Pat and Jonny got to deep dive and fully experience 'Slime-San", the super gross and tough as nails platformer where you play as an animated ball of slime working your way through a giant worms intestinal tract. For Pat, this brought bad memories of old Ren&Stimpy games that went out of their way to prove they hated children. For Jonny, it carried happier thoughts of playing Super Meat Boy, dying repeatedly and cursing to the heavens. Despite the two points of view on the matter, both really enjoyed the game. What made it stand out? And should YOU spend your money to be grossed out and frustrated, too?
