In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Bjørn Jacobsen are joined by sound artist Monica Bolles from Denver, US. Monica Bolles has been working with spatial audio since 2011 when she first gained access to her local planetarium's 15.1 channel surround system. Since then she has been continuously building toolsets in Max MSP to create large textured soundscapes that explore space, movement, and interaction. Tapping into her roots in traditional audio engineering she works with composers and live performers to explore methods of translating their work to spatial environments while exploring the role the audio engineer plays as a performer and musician. As an artist, she has been focusing on building custom instruments that explore data sonification and use gestural control to create improvised spatial audio experiences. As a producer, she puts together teams to build large immersive works that bring together live performance, dance, 360-projections, spatial audio, and other new technologies. She is also a presenter and host of workshops in her field and has performed in this capacity at SXSW (2019) Ableton Loop (2018), IMERSA Summit (2013-2019), and NIME (2017-2018), among others. Currently, she owns and operates her own company, Resonant Interactions, specializing in immersive experience design. In this episode, we dive into the topic of spatial audio for domes and planetariums, and Monica expertly covers multiple aspects of this re-emerging industry. Noah Pred is a Canadian producer, DJ and music educator. We caught up with him just before he was to discuss keeping a creative flow in the studio at Ableton’s now postponed Loop festival. However, his topic seems more relevant than ever to these times of lockdown and quarantine. In the podcast, he talks about his early transition to electronic music, explains how he ended up teaching and offers his tips on how to keep those creative juices flowing.

Roger Linn is a Grammy award winning electronic musical instrument designer, whose instruments have had a major influence on the music industry. He designed the first drum machine with samples. His MPC60 revolutionized the sampling and hip hop community. Today, his LinnStrument is ushering in a new generation of expressive electronic musicianship.  It was an honor to speak with the legendary Roger Linn. Izzy Barreiro is an accomplished DJ, producer, composer, synthesist and teacher. They perform as @stud1nt and are part of the deeply necessary collectives Discwoman and KUNQ. They have taught classes everywhere from Moogfest to Ableton Loop. They are also the director of production at Whimsical Raps, a Brooklyn-based musical instrument company. Zaak Kerstetter is an Ableton Certified Trainer, producer and performer. He makes music as Zenotope, combining elements of glitch, ambient, downtempo, and bass with doses of classical and sci-fi. Zaak has worked at many different music production schools and is currently working and teaching at KMGLife.  I met Zaak at Ableton Loop in November, and we hit it off immediately. Neil “Nail” Alexander is a multi-genre, multi-instrumentalist from the Hudson Valley in New York. Neil’s work spans just about every genre from jazz and classical to modern EDM and ambient. He is an avid live performer who incorporates both acoustic and electronic elements into his performances, and combines jazz sensibilities to electronic composition. Neil runs the Hudson Valley Ableton Live user group. I spoke with Neil about his wide range of work and how he manages to wear multiple musical hats. I went to Ableton Loop in Los Angeles and it was an incredibly valuable experience. There were excellent panels, discussions, meet ups, and performances. But aside from the scheduled events, some of the best moments were the moments between events. I had the chance to meet and talk to so many interesting people. I finally got to meet 3-D, real life versions of tons of people I’ve followed and interacted with through the computer screen. The spirit of the event was welcoming and inspiring. Besides loads of inspiration, I took home some important lessons. In this episode, I share some of those with you. They are lessons from the panels and workshops, as well as wisdom I picked up during the many conversations I had with other attendees. Yesterday's release came together a bit haphazardly, and today's is a bit similar, so I'm breaking my own rules: More than 45 seconds. This is partially because I ran out of time, and partially because I enjoyed this whole impromptu jam, and couldn't figure out where to cut it. The sound generator is called Fugue State. It's an installation piece at Ableton Loop.

I've gotten so many requests to interview Leafcutter John - but it really blew up after his recent work at the Ableton Loop conference. I reached out to him and he was nice enough to say "Yes" to the interview request. What was cool is that it started out like an interview, but quickly turned into a chat about how we do our respective things. This was a great one, and I can't wait to meet John in person. Awesome guy - and someone that has been quite thoughtful about what and how he does his thing. If you know Leafcutter John's work, this won't surprise you.
