Norwegian superstar Astrid S has blown the world of pop music away with a staggering 5 billion streams of hit songs such as "Hurts so Good", "Think Before I Talk" and "It's OK If You Forget Me". Her second album, the newly-released 'Joyride', reflects her growth as an artist, inspired by car journeys with her Dad. They listened to bands like The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, Coldplay, and HAIM - early musical impulses that are reflected throughout the new album. Astrid S is a global pop artist with sold-out world tours and several awards in the luggage, including Spellemann (Norwegian Grammy) and MTV award. She has previously collaborated with talents such as JP Cooper, Shawn Mendes, NOTD, and previous Léim Thart guest Dagny. 2020's debut album 'Leave It Beautiful', became a bible of Scandipop, crafted mostly with Swedish production duo Jack & Coke. Astrid compares the process of making the new album to speed dating. She has stepped out of her comfort zone and jumped into sessions with many different producers, including JT Daly (K. Flay, Benson Boone, PVRIS), Oliver Lundström (Carly Rae Jepsen, Dagny) and Matias Téllez (girl in red, Sondre Lerche, Maisie Peters). Norwegian pop star Sondre Lerche has been making music and releasing albums since he was a teenager, songs that ache with yearning and that are underpinned by swooning strings,  bossa nova rhythms, and jazz stylings. It was always clear that Lerche was a romantic, but a romantic with a sometimes aching, melancholy heart. If you needed evidence of that, look no further than the two books he's chosen for this episode of shelf life - Marguerite Duras's The Lover, and Geir Gulliksen's The Story of a Marriage. Though very different, both novels are interested in the power dynamics of relationships, and the alchemy of love.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Sondre Lerche over Zoom video!Sondre Lerche released Avatars of Love, his most ambitious work to date, via PLZ / InGrooves. The 14 song double album features contributions from AURORA, CHAI, Felicia Douglass (Dirty Projectors), Mary Lattimore, Rodrigo Alarcon, and Ana Müller. On April 30, Lerche will embark on his first US tour in more than 5 years. The tour will make stops in Seattle Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and more. Find a full list of tour dates below or at sondrelerche.com. Avatars of Love is now available for purchase on special edition double vinyl and double CD with a 20 page booklet.Lerche explains: “‘Alone In The Night' was the first recording I did for the Avatars of Love album. It put everything in motion, and surprised me greatly. I heard AURORA's voice singing it in my mind one day when I was out running in the sun. So I asked her if she'd sing it with me. It felt extra special, because I had just returned home to Bergen after 15 years of living in the US. And she was one of the first to greet me there. It's a song about what happens to our bodies and souls when we fall in love, and then again through the passage of time, when we age and die. It's ultimately about our memories and dementia. How frail we really are, and how heartless the process of aging can be to lovers."From March 31 through April 24, Lerche and Norwegian artist Nikolai Torgersen, who drew all of the visuals for Avatars of Love, presented an art exhibit at Kulturhuset i Bergen. The exhibit featured 40+ pieces of artwork tied to the album that were auctioned off, with proceeds being donated to families who struggle with poverty and children who are the victims of substance abuse, charities near and dear to Nikolai, as well as to victims of the war in Ukraine. This year, Lerche's incredibly successful collaboration with the longtime biodynamic, family-run wine producer Castell D'Age finally became available at select retailers and wine-forward restaurants in the US.We want to hear from you! On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of Norwegian friends who both have excellent new records out this year: Sondre Lerche and AURORA.  Lerche started writing gorgeous pop songs while he was still a teen in the suburbs of Bergen, Norway. It wasn't too long before his music started finding its way out into the world, and he's released a bunch of albums since the early 2000s. Though clearly starting from a pop background—his songs are incredibly catchy—Lerche has nimbly moved through various permutations over the years, flirting with jazzy sounds, more intimate acoustic numbers, touches of Brazilian sounds, and the occasional out-and-out new wavey rock. Not long before the pandemic, Lerche recorded Patience, which he intended to tour behind, but instead he ended up moving back to Norway from Los Angeles and recording another excellent album, called Avatars of Love. For this one, his tenth, Lerche recruited a bunch of friends to help out, including another Norwegian star from a younger generation, AURORA. Here's a bit of the sensual duet they performed together for the album, it's called “Alone in the Night.” As you can hear, AURORA has a kind of otherworldly quality to her voice, though on her own records it's more often set against a more electronic backdrop: You may have heard her killer single “Cure for Me,” which came out last year and appears on her latest album, which came out earlier this year. It's called The Gods We Can Touch, and she's once again—like Lerche—supremely interested in lyrics, this time around going heavy on love and relationships.  You'll hear the two of them chat about the importance of love in this podcast, as well as their native Norway, earlobe hair, and more. One minute they're deep into how music can help us overcome grief, and the next they're talking about how religion and music are both like penises, in that they are beautiful and lovely, but you shouldn't shove any of them in someone's face. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to AURORA and Sondre Lerche for letting us listen in on their fun. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse wherever you get your podcasts. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range.
