Learn what it means to be free, the four steps to break free from sin, and how to break free from lies that don't serve you well in Episode 156. Through this last chapter of Jonah, we'll see that only grace holds the power to set you free. God's heart for us is not to be trapped by anger or sin or worry but to be free. God created us to be free from sin and wounds and lies, so we could be free to be loved by Him, to be healed by Him, to obey Him, to worship Him, to delight in Him and feel His delight for us, to serve others, to know His friendship, and to experience community with our brothers and sisters in Christ. When we are held captive by sin, wounds, false narratives, inaccurate understanding of God's character, and lies, we do not live in freedom. In today's episode, you'll learn how grace leads to freedom as we unpack: What it means to be free, The tools God gives you to break us free, Four steps to break free from sin, And how to break free from lies that don't serve you well. When we really love our people, we go above and beyond to show them we care. But sometimes, loving and serving others isn't easy, especially when it seems like we are the one putting the majority of the effort into the relationship. But ... are we really understanding or appreciating the way others might be loving or serving us back, in their own unique way? Today on the Proverbs 31 Ministries Podcast, our friend Amanda Bacon shares the three problems we face when our expectations aren't met, and how to love and live freely out of an overflow of Christ's sacrificial love for us. It's so important to study how Jesus makes His presence known in every part of Scripture because this will help us experience more of His presence in our day-to-day lives right now. What was supposed to be a chill episode about Amanda's new magical cookbook that everyone should own, very quickly turned into a therapy session, as per usual. Amanda is a special one. Moon Juice started very organically, no pun intended, as a means to just feel good. After years of doctors throwing prescriptions her way, she figured it out on her own, using fresh juices, foods and tons of healing adaptogens to put an autoimmune condition into remission. She educated myself on diet, lifestyle, spirit, and traditional wisdom, and saw radical changes in her blood and hormone panels. On paper, she started to read biologically younger, and it was through simple daily practices that big changes were made. Her products are my favorite, especially the supplements - they are bio-available dreams that solve problems like mood, hair health, energy... I take Ting first thing in the am, Magnesi-om at night and will NOT go a day without Super You. Now her new book, the Moon Juice Manual, has compiled all that knowledge. With exerts from incredible doctors, to adaptogenic waffles with chocolate dipping sauce, this book is as healing as Amanda herself. Enjoy! We’re wrapping up our series on parenting and family culture today. I’m joined by Amanda Bacon. Amanda lives in North Carolina with her husband, Jeremy, and their eight children. She’s on staff at Proverbs 31 Ministries on Lysa TerKeurst’s team and loves encouraging women with biblical truth and authenticity. Amanda is the co-host of All the Mom Things podcast, host of At Night podcast, and the co-author of Shiny Things: Mothering on Purpose in a World of Distractions. In order to know what’s distracting us, we need to know what our priorities are. Amanda and I talk about how naming what’s important to us isn’t the hard part. It’s keeping what’s most important to us first. Amanda points us to the perfect example. She says, “[Jesus] displays priorities and how to live our top priority with it at the top, all through scripture.” Amanda and I chat about some of the distractions in our lives and how a lot of times we use distractions as an escape when things are hard. To combat this, a question Amanda will ask is, “is right now the right time?” And because our brains are full managing all of the things for our families, we might need timers and reminders to keep us on track. As much as we love our children, sometimes they are the distraction. Amanda says communication with our kids is really big when we need to get work done, but we also have to make sure we aren’t squandering our time. Since summer is upon us and mothering on purpose is Amanda’s heart, we wrap up by talking about things we can do to have a successful summer with our most important people. What’s really going on when we want to put on our comfy pants and not engage with people? We are all tired of adulting and over-analyzing, and being hyper-vigilant about All The Things. We just want a break because this has been one crazy year, so, in this episode, we break down: What we mean by “comfy pants” Why we all want to put on our comfy pants And a choose-your-own grace-filled next step. So if you just want to put on your comfy pants, not be bothered, and escape, listen in. Key Quotes You do not have to live from a place of fear or striving or worry that you’re not doing enough or that God is disappointed in you. God is crazy about you, where you are, as you are. Relax knowing God holds all things together, including you. You’re a human, with limited capacity and finite time, doing the best job you can in extreme circumstances. God doesn’t expect anything of you; He only invites you into His presence. Put on your comfy pants and talk to Jesus. They are the authors of the book “Shiny Things: Mothering on Purpose in a World Full of Distractions.” They also have a podcast together called “All the Mom Things Podcast” and they run a blog called “The Masterpiece Mom”.These ladies are so full of wisdom and I especially loved their heart behind writing their book. The world is not slowing down. The number of shiny things stealing our attention and distracting us from the mission of motherhood continues to increase. As women we know the magnetic pull to steer away from what's important and choose what feels irresistible in the moment. Honoring God and loving our families are our highest priority, but sometimes we need help keeping them there. Anne-Renee and Amanda have co-authored Shiny Things: Mothering on Purpose in a World of Distractions. Join us to learn practical tips to resist the pull to be interrupted by non-essentials and focus on God and our priority people.
As mamas, we all want to be intentional in how we parent, in the way we show up to our work, as well as in all our relationships, right? We have every desire to bring our best self to all these areas of our lives, but one of the biggest hurdles we face is the threat of distraction. It's more real for our generation than any generation that came before us. Don't worry, this isn't one of those conversations that gets all down on social media. In our conversation with Amanda Bacon & Anne Renee we really zoomed out and looked at distraction as a whole in our lives. They had so many refreshing insights on how we can stay focused on the LASTING things more than the lesser, shiny things that pull at our attention all day. This conversation is so positive and helpful for any of you mamas out there feeling pulled in a million directions!

This week Amanda Bacon is joining the Living With Less podcast as a special guest. She works for Proverbs 31 Ministries, is co-author of Shiny Things, co-host of All The Mom Things podcast, a wife and superwoman to 8 kiddos..yes, you read that correctly I said 8! Today we’re going to be talking all things Jesus, book writing, mothering, and choosing lasting things over lesser things.1) Tell us about the wonderful you! (Family, home, church, job, ministry, etc.)-Hi! My name is Amanda Bacon and I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. I've been married to Jeremy for twenty years and am the mom of eight children ages 7-18. We're relative newbies in the South, having lived here just over three years. My husband and I grew up in Alaska, and all of our children were born there! I serve on staff at Proverbs 31 Ministries on Lysa TerKeurst's team, and write online at themasterpiecemom.com and amandabacon.com. I'm the co-author of Shiny Things: Mothering on Purpose in a World of Distractions, which released in April 2019.2) When did you feel the call to become an author/writer! What started the whole idea of writing the Shiny Things?-I've loved to write since I was in the 4th or 5th grade and continued to love it through my college years. I even enjoyed writing research papers! Shortly after I became a mom, I started to blog in 2006 and have been doing so ever since. What started out as updates for faraway friends and family turned into something different. Through the writing I was doing, I found that I loved to encourage women using biblical truths and examples from my own life. In 2014, Anne-Renee Gumley (my co-author of Shiny Things) and I started an online ministry to moms called The Masterpiece Mom. The writing we do at TMM turned into a blog post that turned into a book idea that a publisher noticed! And now we have a book.3) What was your favorite part in writing the book? I find when I write I learn so many things about myself and The Lord. What do you feel stands out most to you in seasons of intense writing?-My favorite part of writing the book was doing so as a duo with Anne-Renee, and the dependence on the Lord that grew out of that experience. I also found I loved writing for a long time on a single topic!4) I loved the story you shared when you talked about being at that conference looking down at your belly and knew you and your husband were supposed to grow your family again, what was that like? What was it like sensing God so clearly in a moment.?-Yes, in Chapter 11 of the book, I tell the story of being in a hotel shower at a mom conference far from home and seeing the formation of a "bow" formed as the blood came to the surface of the skin on my abdomen in the hot shower! I had been praying in the shower and crying out to God about whether or not we should start trying to conceive a 4th baby. It was an amazingly personal and vivid moment with God. I heard the message He was sending loud and clear: Children are a gift. Our 4th baby was born 18 months later.- Even for the people listening to this episode who aren’t growing their families, don’t have children, or honestly aren’t married! I think we all have moments where we feel God move in this way but some chalk it up to just a thought/feeling. What would you tell someone who experiences this type of moment.-I would say two things: 1) Don't push it away or flippantly disregard it. and 2) Don't run full-fledged after it either! Take it to the Lord in prayer.5) I loved asking Anne-Renee this question! Since your book is all mainly geared towards moms, who has been the best role model in your life when it comes to this season of life.-I'll have to say, I haven't had many mentors in my life. I'm not exactly sure why that is, but it has grieved me many times throughout the years! But I do have one special friend who is near and dear to me and is a stage ahead of me who has helped me so much through my mothering years. And I have always looked up to moms who have raised or are raising four or more children, since that's my life. I love to hear how they do things. My life now mothering eight children is very different than when I was mothering one to three children, so I love hearing from the women who have juggled lots of kids!6) What’s the hardest distraction you deal with when it comes to mothering in our world today?-I'd say I am my biggest distraction. I don't compare myself to other moms or women, but I do get lost in thoughts that might be negative about my life or myself. And those painful thoughts can lead me to want to get lost in the apps on my phone.7) Our sweet boy Cam is actually turning 2 the week this airs! What is your best encouragement for us younger moms in the throws of littles.-I had to come to a point where I realized I won't be perfect and neither would my kids. It sounds simple, but how often do we expect this from ourselves and kids? Let your kids be imperfect and offer lots of love and grace.8) The Living With Less podcast is all about living with less of the things getting in the way of who Christ is calling us to be. If someone asked you something they needed to live with less of in regards to becoming who God is calling them to be what would you tell them?-I love this question! I think we all could live with less swirling thoughts that are left unchecked in the secret spaces of our minds and hearts.2 fun things to wrap us up! Favorite Bible verse and why.-I love the story in 2 Chronicles 20. So that whole chapter is amazing! I've been camping there a lot lately.Best part of having a family blended with adoption!-The best part of having both bio and adopted kids is the compassion I've seen grow in my older kids' lives. It's been beautiful to see!You can find Amanda at themasterpiece mom.com , Amandabacon.com, and @amanda_bacon_
Why is it so enticing to choose lesser things over lasting things? Do you ever pick up your phone or watch a mindless show without thinking anything of it, but end up wondering where the day went when you lay down at night? Sometimes even the things that are entertaining and good can leave us feeling empty, lesser and lacking. So, how do we set healthy boundaries and train our minds to choose what's best over what seems right in the moment? Today on The Proverbs 31 Ministries Podcast, we're tackling distractions head-on with our friends Amanda Bacon and Anne-Renee Gumley of The Masterpiece Mom. Amanda and Anne-Renee will give a teaching based on their latest book, Shiny Things: Mothering on Purpose in a World of Distractions (and we promise it isn't just for moms). In this episode of the podcast, you will… Identify the areas where you're most distracted by “shiny things” and create a priority list that you're determined to live out, not just write out. Stop being distracted by comparing your life to someone else's as you start focusing on the assignment that only you can do. Grow your desire to have a strong relationship with the Lord in order to develop the persistence you need to stick to your “lasting” list instead of the “lesser” things in life.
