This message introduces the series “God Among the Ruins” through the book of Nehemiah, reminding us that God is present and at work even when life feels broken. Israel's ruin came from doing what was right in their own eyes, showing that sin always leads to destruction, but Nehemiah's response—grief, prayer, confession, and dependence on God—became the starting point for renewal. His broken heart aligned with God's heart and led to a clear call to action: rebuilding begins when God's people allow themselves to feel the weight of brokenness and step into God's work with compassion and obedience. Today, God no longer dwells in buildings but in His people, calling the church to move beyond numbness and judgment and instead carry His presence into the ruins through prayer, repentance, and faithful action. Reflection Questions:·        What breaks my heart that also breaks God's heart?·        Have I become numb to sin and brokenness, or does it still move me to compassion and prayer?·        Am I living according to God's ways, or simply doing what seems right in my own eyes?·        When I see brokenness, do I respond with judgment and distance, or compassion and action?·        What step of rebuilding or obedience might God be calling me to take right now?

In the modern Western world, monotheism is the rule, rather than the exception. Not so in the ancient past, where many cultures worshipped whole pantheons of gods, each one responsible for specific areas of the mortal experience. How does the one god of Israel compare to this myriad of deities, and can an understanding of how ancient mediterranean cultures thought about and interacted with the divine help us to understand the god presented to us in the Bible?

Oceans of faith: facing fears and finding God among coral reefs | with Rachel Jordan

For marine biologist, writer, and lay theologian Rachel Jordan, the ocean has never just been a backdrop—it's been a living metaphor for her relationship with God. Raised in a Christian household, Rachel's wonder at tide pools and the mysteries of the deep developed alongside her budding faith. She explains how the intrigue of peering into tiny, brimming tide pools mirrored her fascination with glimpses of God's character: “There was something vast and impressive that laid beyond, that I wanted to explore.” Just as the tide pools hinted at whole worlds awaiting discovery, Rachel found that both faith and science propelled her deeper: “Being a Christian has propelled me further into a desire to understand science ... and being a scientist has, I believe, made me a better Christian.” Rachel may study the ocean's wonders, but her path has been anything but fearless. “I've had this recurring nightmare ... of getting eaten by sharks ... I was just terrified of it,” she confesses. And yet, her marine biology career meant close encounters with those notorious creatures were not just possible, but sometimes necessary. What's remarkable is how God met her in those moments of dread—not by removing the fear, but by transforming it. As she recounts, “The beauty is that God took this thing that I was afraid of and converted it to open-mouthed wonder.” Rachel's transparency normalizes fear as a companion to growth, whether learning to dive or facing daunting new callings. Her encouragement? “It's okay to feel [fear]; it might be something that God uses in your story to do something really big and to show you more of who he is.” Lessons of Grief and Hope from the Coral Reefs Perhaps nowhere does Rachel blend her scientific vocation and spiritual conviction more poignantly than in her stewardship of endangered corals. She describes the “magic castles” of Dry Tortugas National Park—towering, endangered pillar corals—where she devoted herself to preservation efforts. Witnessing the corals' decline from disease was, for Rachel and her fellow scientists, “tragic and deeply impactful.” Yet, as a follower of Christ, Rachel finds hope in the heartbreak. Not only does she grieve in community, but she sees loss through the lens of biblical resurrection. She connects the “white skeleton bony structures” of dead corals to Ezekiel's vision of dry bones: if God can bring those bones to life, can't he also restore coral reefs one day? For Rachel, loss becomes an invitation to hope: “All of creation is eventually going to be restored, remade ... I just wonder what he's going to do next.” Divine Lessons from Buddy Dives and Seahorses Diving, for all its wonder, is fraught with risk, which is why marine biologists always practice “buddy diving”—entrusting their lives to a partner in the depths. For Rachel, this is a living parable: “God is our ultimate dive buddy ... he's not only capable of rescuing us in danger, but he promises to never leave or forsake us.” Other creatures—even a seahorse named Mr. Snuggles—have revealed to her the joy of relationship, not just provision. “I want to, like Mr. Snuggles, draw close to him and just sort of curl up with him and hang out together.” Scripture: A Dive Site Brimming with Life What better metaphor for the Bible, Rachel muses, than a vibrant dive site—unchanging in position but always full of surprise, beauty, and life? “When I read God's word ... there's always something new to discover.” It's a place to keep returning with fresh awe and an explorer's heart. The Deep Calls to Deep Whether or not you'll ever strap on a snorkel, Rachel's conversation is an invitation: to see the world as shot through with the beauty and presence of its Maker, to find him not only in safe harbor but also in the open, sometimes scary waters of life, and to trust that every loss and fear can be met—and even redeemed—by the God who made oceans and corals... and calls each of us out into the deep. MEET RACHEL JORDAN Rachel G. Jordan is a professional marine biologist and lay theologian. A self-professed Jesus-loving coral nerd, she was raised in Idaho and has since traveled the globe chasing her passion for faith and science. She has an MS in marine biology and ecology from James Cook University (Australia), a BS in ecology from Seattle Pacific University (USA), and a certification in biblical studies from Bodenseehof Bible School (Germany). In addition to working as a coral biologist for the US National Park Service, Rachel has worked in marine aquaculture research, organic chemistry laboratories, veterinary research facilities, the pet industry, and a museum. When not diving or writing, she can be found reading C.S. Lewis, growing wildflowers, and exploring creation with her husband. More at https://rachelgjordan.com/  MORE ABOUT “IF THE OCEAN HAS A SOUL” The ocean is filled with scientific discoveries―and God's presence. For marine biologist Rachel Jordan, both science and Scripture are means of knowing creation and Creator. In If the Ocean Has a Soul, Rachel considers the natural world through a spiritual lens, meshing marine biology with biblical truths in a keen and current take on faith and science. With engaging storytelling and deep knowledge of the Bible, she asks and answers questions like: How can Christians reconcile religion and science when the two seem opposed? What do suffering and death teach us about the character of Jesus? How do we care for the environment when there seems to be little hope for repair? What do the ocean and its sea creatures, specifically, reveal about God? In these pages, Rachel recounts fascinating aquatic phenomena alongside the sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic stories of animals she has known. You'll lose yourself in the shadows of an underwater labyrinth; hear spiritual wisdom from a great-grandmother coral the size of a Volkswagen Beetle; and fall in love with Porky, the pudgy porcupinefish greeting visitors at the Windjammer shipwreck. And along the way, you'll see how the promise of restoration unfolds in both physical and spiritual ways. Rachel's thoughtful scientific and theological insights encourage us to know the Creator of the sea and everything in it. God spoke to Craig about healing for a lame Sikh priest. Then the police came... Jesus said it was for our good that he left the earth (John 16:7). That seems hard to believe. What could be better than sitting down and having a coffee with Jesus?  Jesus is described as the living "word of God" (John 1:14) - that meant everything he said was God's voice as well as everything he did. The early disciples could hear God's voice as they were walking down the streets of Jerusalem, as they were sharing a meal with Jesus over bread and olives, as they were listening to Jesus preach on the temple steps. How could anything be better than that? The answer of course is that Jesus' departure signalled the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It was better not only because the Holy Spirit would remind us of everything Jesus said and did, he would also speak about things to come - that is, the issues that Jesus didn't cover while he was on earth! It's better because unlike Jesus who was limited to a physical body and the language and customs the first century Jews in the Greco-Roman world, the Holy Spirit speaks to apply those truths to new times, places and cultures! In this episode you'll see the truth of Jesus' words. Our guest, Craig Stephens is an officer of the Salvation Army and has heard God speak in places like India, China, Pakistan and communities in his own hometown. Craig ministers as an evangelist across Australia and beyond and trains others to share the good news. He also works with global missions movement, Impact Nations, and loves to take teams across the world to train them in preaching the gospel and healing the sick.  In this episode, you'll hear about: Craig's God story, growing up in church but then leaving as he didn't feel like he could behave well enough to meet the church's standards. It was a few years later that Craig re-entered the church after a miraculous encounter with the Holy Spirit that changed his heart and gave him boldness to share his faith with others. The Holy Spirit lit a fuse that wouldn't go out! Craig's God-conversation that led him into ministry and in particular, working among the marginalised and broken in Sydney. Craig tells how the Holy Spirit showed him a vision of his middle-class church being mobilised to serve the poor with details about the actual building they could use. Later Craig shares how a visit to the local police and an offer to serve in the most difficult area of the town led them to the exact building! Then they watched as God brought transformation… I could see the people in our church carrying the grace they had in the community… the schoolteachers sitting alongside bedraggled, roughed up kids and coaching them in their schoolwork… the physiotherapists doing therapy in a particular room… the ladies who serve the morning tea hosting the community in a cafe. I couldn't stop seeing it. The incredible God-conversation that led Craig and his team to pray a Sikh priest who had been lame since birth and the God-conversation that subsequently led to a last minute escape from arrest by the Sikh police. A God conversation that led Craig and his team to reach people by the side of the road at the Athens Olympics. Subscribe to God Conversations with Tania Harris and never miss an episode! About Craig Stephens Craig is a Salvation Army Officer with a deep hunger for encounters of God. As the Australian Eastern Territorial Evangelist, he trains and equips people in evangelism and is responsible for “New Expressions” of The Salvation Army. Craig also oversees the Central Coast Regional Prayer Room (an interdenominational regional prayer space), a small network of house churches called “community tables”, a company of people gifted in evangelism across nearly 30 churches. Craig further serves on the board of Impact Nations (a global missions movement) (impactnations.com) and loves to take teams across the world to train them in ...

We have virtually nothing in common except perhaps the most important thing - believing in the importance of listening and following the Holy Spirit! On this episode Lucky shares his breathtaking story, including: His dissatisfaction with life: As he approached 50, Lucky was outwardly “successful” making big money in crime syndicates, owning a large house and luxury cars. There was a lot of drugs and women - life was a “full time party.” "I had everything, but I had nothing.” Ps. Lucky Te Koha Finding camaraderie in boys' homes and gangs: “they were the only people who wanted me.” After being raised in a home where violence alcoholism and sexual abuse was the norm, here was a brotherhood where everyone was just like him.  Being invited to the local church by the “stalker” pastor who kept showing up unexpectedly when he was in town. Lucky's innate inability to lie meant that he was cornered into accepting the pastor's invitation every time. Lucky tells of his first two visits - how much he hated everything about church - the music, the sermon and all those church people who "kept looking at him and wanting to give him a hug." The day everything changed. After being inadvertently found in church the day after he was arrested, Lucky spotted the very cop who had arrested him! Dave offered to pray for him and Lucky literally felt his old heart being squeezed out and replaced by something new. God said, “I'm giving you a new heart. Your heart was too cold and too hard. Now you will feel empathy for people like you never have before.” Lucky's vision and calling with a new ministry called Kingdom Brotherhood. This is largely a men's ministry that involves helping others deal with their emotional wounds and trauma. In this, Lucky leads the way by sharing from his own story. He tells of how confession, vulnerability and honesty can open up the way for healing. Lucky's vision came directly from God, to “raise up an army” of righteous and fearless leaders. "I thought I'd just be cooking the sausages. Now I run a trauma program with the gangs, because I'm an 'expert on trauma' - I've had every trauma you can think of!” The story of how a whole chapter of the Black Power gang surrendered their life to Jesus and were baptised.  The continued journey of healing and freedom in his own life. Lucky shares how God spoke to him when he prayed for healing for his eyes: “Why would I heal your eyes when you watch so much rubbish?” When Lucky responded to the Holy Spirit and stopped watching violent videos on YouTube, his eyes were healed instantly. At one level, it seems easy to say you find God in nature--we can talk about the beauty of sunsets and butterflies all day long.   But are there limits to what kinds of things we can say about God from the world around us?  And are there signs of God's presence and goodness even among the things we don't think are lovely or useful, too?  In this episode of Crazy Faith Talk, pastors Erica, Sarah, and Steve explore these kinds of questions, from how do I see God in the mud or in creatures I don't particularly "like", to asking how much we are supposed to make of the realities of death and violence in nature.  Does the rule of predators dominating prey also mean that God wills for the strong to dominate the weak?  And what does our hope in a new creation where lambs and wolves lie down together in peace mean for how much we build our theology around what seems "natural" now?  And if God can love and value things in the ecosystem whether or not I appreciate them, can I recognize that God loves the parts of me that I struggle to accept?  Join us for this conversation here on Crazy Faith Talk!

MMA people, what did we just see? Francis Ngannou went over there to Saudi Arabia over the weekend and DID THE DAMN THING against heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Ngannou out-performed even our most generous expectations, knocking Fury down in the third and taking him to a (kinda bullshit?) split decision. It was, without a doubt, one of the greatest underdog performances in the history of professional sports. This week on the Proper, we discuss, among other things: My God, Francis showed out. How to even put this fight in historical perspective? So, what's next? Does Francis become a full-time boxer or does he have some MMA left in him? How bad did the UFC fuck up here? And when will we hear from Noted Boxing Fan Dana White about this fight? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
