Episode #213: Navigating The Startup Journey Join us today as Colleen Interview's Mary Scott on Take the Leap. If you're looking to launch a business or take your existing venture to the next level, this episode is packed with valuable insights! Here are three key takeaways that stood out to me: Understanding Your Customer's Needs: One of the most critical aspects of startup success is knowing your customer. Mary emphasizes the importance of defining who your customer is and understanding the specific problems they face. By articulating how your product or service solves these problems, you can create a compelling pitch that resonates with potential clients and investors. Remember, it's not just about what you do; it's about how you can make your customers' lives better! Utilizing Local Resources: Starting a business can be overwhelming, but you don't have to navigate it alone! Mary highlights the invaluable resources available through organizations like the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and SCORE. These organizations offer free services, including business planning and mentorship, to help you understand local regulations and set up your business legally. Don't hesitate to reach out to these resources—they can be game-changers for your startup journey! Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Mary shared a wealth of knowledge on the common mistakes startups make and how to avoid them. One key point is the importance of having a solid legal foundation for your business. This includes obtaining the necessary licenses and permits, as well as separating your personal and business finances. By being proactive and informed, you can prevent costly setbacks down the road. I like to think of the working cats program as really going beyond that, where every cat has the possibility of a live outcome…” This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund, The Community Cat Clinic, and the Whisker Tracker App. In this episode filled with insight and inspiration, Stacy LeBaron, host of The Community Cats Podcast, sits down with Mary Scott, a dedicated animal advocate with over 15 years in the field of animal welfare. Mary's journey, which started as a veterinary receptionist and shelter volunteer, led her to become the director of the ASAP Cat Shelter's Working Cats Program in Santa Barbara, California. This unique initiative offers non-social, feral, or semi-social cats a second chance by placing them as "working cats" on farms, nurseries, and other properties where they can thrive while providing natural pest control. Throughout the episode, Mary shares her strategies for acclimating cats to new environments and ensuring they feel at home through careful preparation and adopter education. Stacy and Mary discuss the challenges and successes of maintaining a 95% live release rate, the importance of cultural education around spay and neuter, and the broader impact that working cats programs can have on communities. We are in conversation with Troy Ruffels, a photomedia artist drawing on the tradition of painting and drawing, to make works that are both immersive and atmospheric. Troy incorporates the elements of fire and water into his daily routine from pre-dawn ocean swims to evening fire pits, creating a discipline for his art practice. As a country boy growing up in Forth on Tasmania's north-west coast, Troy's career was launched at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Primavera exhibition for emerging artists in 1997. Since then he has continued his exploration of boundaries: through the mediums he uses or the poetic language to evoke the atmosphere of weather. Troy lectures at the University of Tasmania's School of Creative Art, Inveresk and is represented by Bett Gallery in Hobart. You can see Troy's work on our Instagram page @artdestinations.podcast. Troy would like to take a moment to correct an error he made during a recent conversation for Art Destinations. While discussing key individuals involved in the Digital Art Research Facility, he mistakenly referred to Mary Knights. The correct name is Mary Scott who was key participant in this research project. Troy is sorry for the oversight. Mary Scott was an invaluable part of this project, and he would like to ensure their contribution is fully recognised. He sincerely apologises for any confusion caused and appreciate your understanding.

As a former Marine Recon Scout Sniper, the invisible wounds of moral injury in veterans are a subject close to my heart. It's why I'm honored to sit down with Mary Scott from Pivotal Impact Programs, who joins us with over three decades of mental health expertise. Together, we peel back the layers of this complex issue, sharing insights and stories that reveal the emotional struggles veterans and their loved ones endure. This conversation isn't just about the depths of trauma; it's a testament to the human spirit's capacity to overcome and find hope. The bonds we forge with others often bear the weight of our experiences, and when those experiences include combat-related trauma, the impact on personal relationships can be profound. Mary and I delve into the ways veterans carry their past into the present, sometimes with heartbreaking consequences. But we also cast light on the transformative power of love and commitment as key allies on the journey toward healing. Our discussion includes the raw truth of dealing with nightmares, the shame and anger tethered to them, and the cathartic release found within the understanding embrace of retreat programs specifically designed for veterans.Retreats offer a sanctuary for veterans to confront their traumas and rediscover their identities, and in this episode, I recount the life-changing moments these immersive experiences can catalyze. It's not just about the individual either; the group dynamic plays a pivotal role, allowing veterans to build trust and empathy as they share their stories and struggles. From the serene setting of Copper Falls to the guided steps towards healing, we reveal how retreats can pave the way for personal growth and recovery, regardless of one's history. Join us for an unflinchingly honest look at the path to healing moral injury and reclaiming a sense of self after service. Contact Thad - VictoriousVeteranProject@Gmail.comThanks for listening!

It's a 3 stringer in DG and in a style that dates to the 18th cent. The songs are Un Canadien Errant, the wandering Canadian, which was written in 1842 as a lament for rebels exiled from Canada after the failed Lower Canada Rebellion, 1837-8. The 2nd is A La Claire Fontaine, by the clear Spring, which dates back to 1604 and was originally a song of lost love but also become a resistance song after the British takeover following the F&I War. I wanted to learn some French Canadian song for French reenactors at vous and the Battle of PDC Wi. since a unit portraying the one that fought in that siege would come from Canada to participate in the event as it neared the 250th anniversary of the battle. From Ryan Kirk: Mary Scott Hey Jeremy here's a quick run at Oswald's variations on Mary Scott, a tune I learned from your podcast! I [am playing] an Aulos plastic [flute], copy of a 18th century Grenser. Very nice Instrument for the price. Thought about a wood one but humidity control in our old house is not great. From Dave Rowlands: This is 'La Bernardina' by Josquin des Pres (1450-1521). Not known as a composer for bagpipes, but the leading composer of his time. I have chosen this because a) it is a new find for me, b) because if pipers had access to this music and good instruments they would have played it, and c) because we should not be hidebound to 'tradition', just because it does not come from a bagpiping tradition, does not mean we cant play it, and i cite Amazing Grace as just one case. This is played by Three Swayne D pipes, and one Swayne G pipe. I hope you like it and include it. Best wishes, Dave R From Charlie Rutan: Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle is the traditional Italian Christmas carol played by zampognari. Originally called 'Quanno Nascente Ninno', it was written down in 1754 by St Alphonsus Ligouri, with text in the Neapolitan language: and became so popular that it was later translated into Italian and became 'TU SCENDI DALLE STELLE', undergoing several small changes in its melody during that process. The melody probably existed in various forms for several centuries prior to its 1754 transcription, and is still a basis for many improvised PASTORELLES by zampognari today. I'm playing both Ciaramella ( the Italian folk oboe) and Sei Palmi Zampogna on this track. 'Sei palmi' refers to the length of the instrument's longest chanter, measured by the outsretched palm of the pipe maker's hand, much like the 'cubit' of the ancient world. Zampongne have existed in this form since at least the early 1300's; where we have evidence of the instrument being played in frescoes dated to that time. The zampogna is endemic to southern Italy, exists in about 20 different iterations in several sizes, and is a thriving bagpipe tradition to this day. Join Mary Scott and Amanda as they discuss:How to use accountability to create resilienceWhy connecting with existing groups and resources is critical for startupsHow to rebuild resilience when it's fadedResources:Welcome - BusinessRiffCome to our event on January 17th:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/474101469257SUMMARY:Creating your own company from the ground up is not easy by any means. Start-up businesses always have their ins and outs, their do's and don't's, and maybe even their “yes, and's” and “no, but's”. On this resilience episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, we get to meet and speak with advisor, author, and founder of BusinessRiff, Mary Scott. Mary has always considered herself a “connector” and has found Great Work in connecting people of many skills and resources to help their start-up businesses flourish. However, starting a business can have it's drawbacks, and it's important to remember your own value and self-care when the going gets tough. A big fan of getting “off-planet” (a term coined to describe the escape from work life into rejuvenating self-care), Mary gives us the reassurance that if we know what works for us, and more importantly what DOESN'T work for us, we can achieve a conquering mindset of changing the world in what whatever Great Work we have to give.About the Guest:Mary Scott, award-winning filmmaker, founder of BusinessRiff and author of the St. Louis Startup ResourceGuide, wants StartUps to be wildly successful. As an advisor to hundreds of established businesses and startups, she works with inventors, tech & product founders, and solopreneurs to get them organized, and pitch perfect to present to investors and get checks instead of chuckles. This is going to be Fun!About the Host: Dr. Amanda Crowell is a cognitive psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author of Great Work, and the creator of the Great Work Journals. Amanda's TEDx talk: Three Reasons You Aren't Doing What You Say You Will Do has received more than a million views and has been featured on TED's Ideas blog and TED Shorts. Her ideas have also been featured on NPR, Al Jazeera, The Wall Street Journal, Quartz, and Thrive Global. Amanda lives in New Jersey with her husband, two adorable kids, and a remarkable newfiepoo named Ruthie. Reports of an American woman slain in Italy's scenic Lake Como circulated across the globe in the summer of 1910. The murdered woman was Mary Scott: socialite, actress, and woman with a past so scandalous that the press blamed her for her own murder. This episode is about the life and death of Mary Scott. Growing Older Living Younger

Listener alert: Today's podcast is going to be a little different from my usual format of a conversation with a featured guest. First of all, it's not the podcast that I had planned, featuring 3 guest interviews - and there is a story behind this. Instead it's about mindset - my mindset and where the attributes of consistency, spontaneity and resilience come into play. And I 'm recording it spontaneously so my frustration and irritation may become obvious. So here is how this tale unfolds. Last week, I had the fun and pleasure of being a featured podcast host on Podapalooza, which is an action packed virtual event to connect Podcast hosts and podcast speakers. Over the day, I enjoyed conversations with 9 podcast guests. I planned to air 3 separate episodes, each featuring segments from 3 speakers, that would highlight some aspect of Growing Older Living Younger. The first is titled " Release Your Voice , Share Your Wisdom, and features transformation coaches. Allan Carroll, Lynn Himmelman and Robert A. Wilson. In segments from the original interviews, Alan shows me how to find the space between spoken words, Lynn shows how laughter creates confidence and Robert takes me through an induction test for susceptibility to hypnotherapy. This was the episode planned for today. The second, planned to air the following week is called "Technology, Time and Being Productive, with tips and strategies shared by Avital Spivak, an online technology coach, Yvonne McCoy, women's business consultant and strategist, and Sheri Burke, creator of the Reinvention playbook. The third episode "Diverse Ways to Keep Happy and Well " features interviews with Mary Scott, a documentary film maker who founded a resource directory for start businesses, Adrianna Steinwedel, who works with type 2 diabetes and Kate Culver, founder of song to Gaia, and transformational coach. To ensure that I do not miss an episode, I usually have a few pre-scheduled but having been out of town attending two busy conferences, both needing lots of follow up, I planned to schedule the first podapalooza episode today, and be finished in time to go to my Sunday night dance class. And the devils of technology intervened. I have a Mac, for which I have been meticulously keeping the desktop uncluttered and easy to work with. Unfortunately, believing that it was for the preservation of my computer, I had set my system to automatic updates. because I thought this was the way to keep my computer functioning and safe No problem until today when lo and behold, an automatic update occurred and anew operating system, Ventura, installed on my iMac. completely scrambled my computer. Somehow in its wisdom, Apple decided to download all the various folders from my iPhone, my MacBook Air, my old Mac and my current Mac and I was faced with a desktop where I couldn't find anything that I needed. r. When I launched my podcast 76 episodes ago, I made a vow to myself of consistency. Every Monday, without fail, an episode would air. And so far I have not missed a single week. I could not let this week be the first. But I have prided myself that I have featured exciting, interesting and educational guests and clearly this was not going to happen. The demon of perfectionism and fear of spontaneity urged me to miss a week, the disciplinarian of consistency fought back, and finally the humility, the nurturer, humility won out. So dear listeners, I humbly leave you with advance indication of the upcoming podapalooza episodes, and now I need to get to sleep to store up energy for my battle with technology tomorrow.

Bookseller, publisher, Dissenter and dinner-party host, Joseph Johnson was a great enabler in the late 18th-century literary landscape . . . Daisy Hay is the author of Dinner with Joseph Johnson: Books and Friendship in a Revolutionary Age and Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Exeter, and Kathryn Sutherland is the author of Why Modern Manuscript Matters and Senior Research Fellow in English at the University of Oxford. Together they join the Slightly Foxed editors to discuss Joseph Johnson's life and work at St Paul's Churchyard, the heart of England's book trade since medieval times.   We listen to the conversation around Johnson's dining-table as Coleridge and Wordsworth, Joseph Priestley and Benjamin Franklin, Mary Wollstonecraft and William Blake debate the great issues of the day. And we watch as Johnson embarks on a career that will become the foundation stone of modern publishing. We hear how he takes on Olaudah Equiano's memoir of enslavement and champions Anna Barbauld's books for children, how he argues with William Cowper over copyright and how he falls foul of bookshop spies and is sent to prison. From Johnson's St Paul's we then travel to Mayfair, where John Murray II is hosting literary salons with Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott, and taking a chance on Jane Austen. To complete our tour, we glimpse the anatomy experiments in the basement of Benjamin Franklin's house by the Strand. Our round-up of book recommendations includes Konstantin Paustovsky's The Story of a Life which begins in Ukraine, Winifred Holtby's conversations with Wollstonecraft and Woolf, a fresh look at Jane Austen's Emma and an evocation of the Aldeburgh coast as we visit Ronald Blythe for tea. #142 - In November 1969, Mary Scott arrived home to her San Diego apartment after her shift as a cocktail waitress. The next day, her best friend checked on her after she learned that Mary didn't show up to work. When her friend entered the apartment, she found that her friend had assaulted and strangled to death. With little evidence to go on, the case remained unsolved for the next five decades. It wasn't until cold case investigators turned to forensic genetic genealogy that they eventually identified a possible suspect in Mary's murder.Support My WorkIf you love the show, the easiest way to show your support is by leaving us a positive rating with a review. In this episode of News Too Real: Sucess Stories in California homelessness epidemic, producer host, Julia Dudley Najieb, reviews the appalling statistics that are also dismissal nationwide concerning the rate of homelessness in California. As the crisis reveals that over 60,000 people in California do not have homes to go to at night, there is a sliver of good news coming out of Kern County city, Bakersfield, CA, who has achieved a rate of "functional zero" homelessness in its city; this information was revealed during an Ethnic Media Service (EMS) news briefing last week.
