This week, we are taking a ride down the river Nile as we eat Mediterranean food, possibly with bugs, and discuss The Mummy (1999). We are in love with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as much as Imhotep is in love with Anck Su Namun. This film is full of entertainment if you can get over the ability to teleport to and from locations with ease and silly effects that may be as cool as a face in a sandstorm but are ill-used when it comes to plot and the rules of magic. Who wouldn't wait dead for years in the desert, after being buried alive, to be resurrected and practically immortal with the intention of reuniting with the love of your life? Wait, is this a love story or an action movie?

Do you love adventure films? Sexy guys and gals on camelback your thing? Do you pine for the golden age of Brendan Fraser’s film career? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, listener Ryan G commissioned just the movie for you- 1999’s “The Mummy.” In this episode, Big D walks us through how to avoid death by quicksand. Gene swoons over Anck-Su-Namun’s golden painted body. And Ashley pines for Ardeth, face tattoos and all. Also, the crew talks about the movie’s missed opportunities to weaponize cats (catpacks, anyone?), the benefits of camels over horses, the sketchy motivations of the Pharaoh’s priests, and whether Imhotep is the victim, not the bad guy. In the end, we ask, “Is ‘The Mummy’ a great movie?” Maybe not. But it sure is one heck of a fun ride on this week’s Shat the Movies. More Frasuary! For Ryan's pick The Mummy Returns (2001), the star of our theme month takes a back seat as we examine the eternal love of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) and Anck-Su-Namun (Patricia Velasquez). Unfortunately, the movie suffers from symptoms of why Polina hates sequels. Treat yourself to our sponsor Frankie & Myrrh's selection of aroma therapy products and at the same time support our show. Then it’s a race to the Scorpion King’s resting place that will determine the fate of the O’Connells’ son, the world, and our two star-crossed villains. Stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Arnold Vosloo, Patricia Velasquez, John Hannah, Oded Fehr, Freddie Boath, Alun Armstrong, Dwayne Johnson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Shaun Parkes. The Mummy is set in Egypt, where over 3,000 years ago the high priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) was given the all-important assignment of preparing the recently dead for their journey into the afterlife. However, Imhotep made one terrible mistake - he became smitten with Anck-Su-Namun, the mistress of the Pharaoh himself. Driven mad by jealousy and love, Imhotep murdered the Pharaoh, and his punishment was to be buried alive and suffer the torment of an eternal life in his wretched tomb. In 1925, a band of adventurers seeking fame and fortune - led by Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser), an American expatriate who has joined the foreign legion, and Evelyn Carnarvon (Rachel Weisz), an amateur archeologist - find a previously unknown burial site in Egypt. The team starts to dig, hoping to find lost riches, but instead they disturb the tomb of Imhotep, and soon the cursed priest rises from his grave to wreak vengeance on humanity. Guest: Holly Twospoons.
