Nick is joined by John Granger and special guest star Guido in their temporary headquarters as they await the move to Granger Towers. We discuss the revelation that J. K. Rowling has an inherited blood clotting disorder, and speculate that this could be von Willebrand Disease, and discuss what this could mean for a Golden Thread that John first explored more than five years ago. Nick surveys the instances of blood in all her published work, and John identifies a theme that Nick has missed - the Eucharist. Could this be the key to understanding the final narrative arch of the Strike series?Links Discussed in this Episode:The revelation of J. K. From a Philadelphia classroom to Malibu boardrooms, trailblazer Dolores Robinson unspools a life of firsts, grit, and sly humor on this episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans and Randy Florence. The first Black female talent manager in film and television recounts launching LaVar Burton after Roots, guiding Martin Sheen post–Apocalypse Now, and negotiating a game-changing million-dollar payday for Michael Clarke Duncan. She shares candid memories of Al Pacino as a surprise “date,” insights on the Will Smith–Chris Rock fallout, and why football isn't as important as baseball, as she cheers the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers for whom her grandson is employed in their clubhouse. Delores reflects on breaking color and gender barriers, building relationships across Hollywood's power circles, and reinventing herself after setbacks, from single motherhood to starting at a receptionist's desk. There are tender turns, too: a cross-country escape, a glass-ceiling award, and a family discovery through ancestry that reshaped her story. We weren't expecting this miniseries on Dwayne Johnson to be so relevant, but as he debuted his “new look” at the Venice Film Festival and began his awards season campaign, Laci and Matt react to the news of the week and unpack his public comments. Johnson reflected on his own career with many of the thoughts we've had as we've gone through his filmography. Is he sincere about it, or just being a good politician trying to win an award? Does he mean it when he says he was ready to pivot to “serious acting” or he was forced to by having so many consecutive box office failures? And is Emily Blunt really his best friend? Does it matter? We take the new information and give our concluding thoughts on the acting career of The Rock, and then rank the nine movies we covered during the summer. And then, we answer some mailbag questions, including: Fuck/Marry/Kill: The duck who shows her tits in Howard the Duck, tiny Dwayne Johnson in Tooth Fairy, and the Thanksgiving turkey from Spider-Man? What relationship from any movie sums up our relationship? Is there a movie that strikes both of us in such a way that we connect over it? What are some underrated movie sequels? What makes us passionate about movies and TV? What movie makes us fight? The Summer of Rock is our summer 2025 miniseries covering the movie career of Dwayne Johnson through nine movies, presented in chronological order. Starting with his attempt at crossing over from the world of wrestling, The Rock's career got off to a bumpy start before finally taking off in the 2010s. But it wasn't long before the bumps returned, and we'll be telling the story for you all summer long! Next week: FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992). Writer and journalist Daniel Nour on the pressures of his vivacious Egyptian-Australian family, and 'inviting people in' instead of 'coming out'.Daniel grew up in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, the only son of Egyptian migrants. He dearly loved his parents, who taught him how to stand up to bullies, drove him to Tournament of the Minds competitions, and helped him buy his first car, but he could never be his whole, true self around them. For most of his life, Daniel was in denial about being gay, despite his raging crushes on handsome film characters like cartoon Aladdin and the Scorpion King, played by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Daniel even very briefly contemplated life as a priest in order to escape the familial pressure to marry a woman and give his parents grandchildren. But after a confidence-boosting trip to Egypt, and then an embarrassing, dishonest appearance on national television, Daniel was finally honest with himself.Further informationHow to Dodge Flying Sandals and Other Advice for Life: An unreliable ethnic memoir is published by Simon and Schuster.Daniel is a member of Sweatshop Literacy Movement, you can keep up to date with his work at his website. This episode of Conversations was produced by Meggie Morris, executive producer is Nicola Harrison. It explores migrant stories, multiculturalism, coming out, Coptic Orthodoxy, protestant church, faith, religion, homosexuality, Arab-Australians, racism, first generation Australians, growing up in Sydney, Cairo, writing, books, family dynamics, body image, male body image, masculinity, gym culture, diet culture, memoir.Find out more about the Conversations Live National Tour on the ABC website.

Dwayne Johnson followed up his debut lead performance in The Scorpion King with The Rundown. Released as Welcome to the Jungle outside America, The Rundown might be his very best movie. Along with Seann William Scott, Rosario Dawson, and a deliciously hammy Christopher Walken, The Rock is firing on all cylinders as both a physical and emotional actor. He can be funny when called to be, but leaves most of the humor to Scott and Walken, and he really shines as a stoic badass. It's no mistake that Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a cameo at the beginning of this movie, passing by The Rock and telling him to "have fun." It was his world now. As The Scorpion King was The Rock's version of Conan the Barbarian, The Rundown was his version of Commando. Unfortunately, the world had changed since the 1980s, and the public appetite for throwback action-adventure movies was waning. We were robbed of a world where he made a movie of this quality every year. But we're also robbed of a world where dozens of movies like this get made every year. We had it all, we just didn't know it. Bonus video: The Rundown should've had a sequel! The Rock and Seann William Scott have excellent chemistry, and their partnership could easily have fit into all kinds of different sequel scenarios. Really, there should have been 10 Rundowns. The Summer of Rock begins as Laci and Matt dive into the movie career of Dwayne Johnson with his first leading role in The Scorpion King (2002). The Rock first graced the big screen a year earlier in The Mummy Returns, in a brief prologue in which he plays a character who seemingly has nothing to do with the sturdy nice fellow he plays in Scorpion King. And now he gets to lead a picture. And what a picture. An old-fashioned picture, you might say. One refreshingly free of irony, self-awareness, or any of the oppressive trappings of modernity. This movie's kinda great, actually. And so is The Rock. Is it possible his career peaked with his first feature? We shall find out in the weeks and months ahead. Bonus video: Matt explains why all movie studio CEOs are basically the exact same guy and why they all make the exact same decisions. Stephen Sommers returns, ha get it, to give us a sequel to his highly successful film The Mummy with THE MUMMY RETURNS. Here's the thing, it's a sequel that's not well regarded and falls into the category of "movie mostly remembered for one thing". We are joined by Sean O'Rourke, one half of the amazing MovieDumpster , to help us dissect this mostly forgotten sequel, and to help us determine if it should be remembered like its predecessor or lost in the abyss of most sequels. The whole original cast is back and the Rock is there, sort of, so what could go wrong? Let's awaken Imhotep once again and explore the sands of Egypt as we RETURN to THE MUMMY, this week on DISSECT THAT FILM: S2 E28. #MovieReview #DissectThatFilm #themummyreturns #brendanfraser Promo: @THECULTWORTHYCINEMAPODCAST FOLLOW SEAN and MOVIE DUMPSTER: https://moviedumpsterpodcast.com CHECK OUT THE VIDEOS MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO: @CinemaTripReviews Matrix Trilogy Reviews feat. It's time to head back to kingdom of Akkad to witness the birth of a legend! Join “The Invisible Dan” and “Monster Mike” as they discuss young Mathayus in his first straight-to-DVD adventure which takes him deep into the Underworld to retrieve the Sword of Damocles, fight Randy Couture, and become the new Scorpion King. We're back in the theater this week to take another look at Tron, the much maligned but visionary tale from 1982 Disney. The first film to employ computer generated graphics, this innovative movie paved the way for Jar Jar, Green Lantern, and the Scorpion King. Wait, what? The boys also talk about their other favorite horrible CGI moments and 80s wuss rock so there's plenty here for everybody.

Join them as they discuss the first Universal Monster spin-off, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson's debut as a leading man, the terrific practical effects, the horror roots of director Chuck Russell and co-star Kelly Hu, and why, despite leaving the monsters behind, The Scorpion King still succeeds as a pulpy, throwback, Conan the Barbarian rip-off by playing to everyone's strengths and not taking itself too seriously. On this episode of What Happened When, Tony is still basking in all the goodness of Canada, so we are giving our listeners a super special treat with a double dose of WHW Patreon madness! On bonus episode number one from February 2019, Low Key Big Hog Joe Pierce of Palmyra, NJ, suggested the main event cage match from SummerSlam 1990 as the Ultimate Warrior met Rick Rude: "... I still remember the awesome Rude vignettes leading up to this with him working out, etc., the match itself, and the aftermath with Rude leaving the WWF (I think it was because he didn't like his payoff from Vince). Plus, I think that this was the first major WWF pay per view after Tony went back to WCW...." And as a bonus, we will cover Hulk Hogan versus Earthquake from the event as well as we go back and see What Happened When... Our second bonus podcast for September takes us back to SummerSlam 2001 during the "invasion." This was suggested by LKBH Bryan Downs of San Antonio, TX, who wrote: "...To be honest, this one wasn't that hard. I have always wanted you and Conrad to cover Summerslam 2001. The INVASION was in full force by that point. Austin had defected to WCW with the WWF Championship, DDP was in full stalker mode for the wife of the Undertaker, and Booker T, the now 5x WCW champ, was to face off against The Rock for the WCW championship. I would to have you and Conrad discuss the tag-team cage match between Kane/'Taker vs DDP/Kanyon. DDP got so f'ing buried by WWE (WWF at the time) that it was ridiculous. In fact, most of the WCW talent got buried big time. Characters that connected were done away with and the commentary team, namely JR, took every change to run down the WCW talent. If you have time or desire, I would also love you guys to cover the Rock vs Booker T match. On the plus side, yes, Booker gets to have a match with the Rock. On the negative side, Rock JUST came back from doing Scorpion King and Booker was doing his thing every chance he could. In my opinion, just my opinion, the whole angle was done poorly and was a way to say "we tried". Again, just my opinion..." And Bryan, we VALUE your opinion and your patronage as well. So, here we go with the cage match at Bummer-Slam. BLUECHEW - Try BlueChew FREE when you use our promo code WHW at checkout--just pay $5 shipping. Before he was a big Egyptian morally ambiguous magical warrior man in Black Adam, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnsons was a big Egyptian morally ambiguous magical warrior man in The Scorpion King. After his live action movie debut and then being a big CGI scorpion person in The Mummy Returns Mathayus (which is his name?) of Akkad is back in a tale of epic-ish proportions! A tale so epic it got a series of it's own spin-off movies which we will never review.
